    Editors Are Not Proofraeders

Oh how I've fallen trap to this so many times when I typeset manga. I tell myself "Well, I've typed it out and seen the lines with my own eyes, it can't be wrong, I know my spelling", after which I proceed to upload the work without even reading it over once, only to then be met with comments pointing out 2 or 3 typos in different pages and forcing me to OCD and turn my computer back on at 2AM to photoshop those pages again. For shorter things (definitely not applicable to big VNs), when you don't have someone to QC/Proofread (as in, someone qualified for said position), my suggestion is to at the very least read the entire finished product a couple times yourself and show it to one or two people, chances are they'll spot a lot of the basic errors pretty easily. I've found that just having a couple people review my work before I upload it has significantly decreased the amount of typos I make.

  4. If I could give you any two pieces of advice, gentle reader, they would be: don’t eat unopened mussels, and don’t proofread anything you’ve edited. Neither will end well for you. I always scratch my head when I see a visual novel translation project with the same person listed as Editor and Proofreader. Or worse yet, Translator, Editor, and Proofreader. Or (and I know I’ve seen this at least once) Translator, TLC, Editor, and Proofreader. I’m all for DIY, but that's a disaster waiting to happen. Here’s the rule: If you’ve touched a piece of copy in any one of these roles, it’s tainted for you in all others. Sorry, that’s just how it is. These jobs are meant to be a series of checks and balances to help ensure the quality and accuracy of the content. If a single person takes on two or more of these roles, you’ve got problems. If one or more of these positions goes completely unfilled, you’ve got problems. It’s not that you wouldn’t be capable — many editors are amazing at proofreading, and tons of translators are wonderful at TLC — but once you’ve worked with the text in one capacity, your familiarity with it makes you far less effective in any other role. Our stupid, stupid brains Like so many things in life, it all comes down our stupid brains being more helpful than we want — kind of like an overeager toddler who just handed you your iPhone. In the shower. (Thank god for Applecare+.) Whenever our brains see a gap in content, they try to fill it whether we want them to or not. “Hi, I’m your brain. Hey, is there a word missing there? Can I make a fairly good guess as to what it is? Wheee! I’ll just pretend like it was there and we read it and nothing’s wrong. Now let’s go think about boobies some more! BOO-BEES! BOO-BEES!” And the more familiar your brain is with the work in question, the easier it is for it to fill in those gaps. It already knows what to expect, and it’s just waiting to jump in and save the day. Our brains must be stopped before they kill again. The easiest way to do this is, at each step of the creation and revision process, have someone ready look at the content with fresh eyes and no preconceptions. Simple as that. You wouldn't go get a second opinion from the doctor who just provided your first opinion, would you? So don’t do it here. Don't double-up on jobs, and don’t leave positions unfilled. The final product will be better for it. Yeah, yeah, I know. Easier said than done. Finding good volunteers is tough and people flake out or have RL commitments all the time. So what then? The nuclear option When I got my first job in advertising, I was an idiot. Thankfully, my first creative director was not. A highly accomplished copywriter, she’d penned dozens of the brand slogans that had littered my youth. Suffice to say, she knew her stuff. (You’d probably know her stuff too, if you saw it.) And this was one of the first things she taught me: “Never, ever proofread your own work. But if you have to ...” That’s right, she had a trick. A big red button on the wall of her brain that said, “PUSH ONLY IN CASE OF EMERGENCY.” You never want to proof your own work, but sometimes you don’t have a choice. Sometimes you’ve rewritten the copy deck five minutes before the big pitch and there’s no time to send it back for proofreading. That’s where the trick comes in. Read it backwards. Start at the very last word and read your way back until you hit the first. This strips away all meaning from the text — your brain isn’t leaping in with a guess as to what comes next — so you can focus on minutiae like spelling, punctuation, repeated words, etc. This is a relatively laborious process, unfortunately, and it doesn’t scale well to an entire visual novel. But I mention it here in case you find yourself with a few lines or even a short script that needs a proofing pass and you’re the only one around to do it. .it of habit a make don’t Just. Full disclosure By the way, I’ll be the first one to admit that v1.0 of the KoiRizo English patch has typos. In my role as editor, I tried to work as cleanly as possible, but over the course of 36,000+ lines — I figure that’s gotta be at least 250,000 words — a few foxes got into the henhouse. The team didn’t have any proofreaders, and the QC process wasn’t nearly as robust as had initially been hoped. (Zakamutt touches on that here.) But you know what? For all of that, I think the launch product came out comparatively clean. I still want to drink bleach and die every time I see a typo report, of course, but that comes with the territory. And with any luck, there will be patch updates forthcoming that address some of these lingering issues. Which is good, since I’m running low on bleach. And lives.

  8. I'd like to single this out specifically so I can say that $40 is NOT what most people are willing to spend on VNs, which is the whole point of this split in the first place. The last year of VNs being on Steam showed us something very important, that price is one of the biggest factors for a VN's popularity. Low-costing inferior products outsell high-costing superior products by a disproportionately large amount. Even a VN with the popularity of Grisaia isn't immune from this. It has sold only around 6-7,000 copies outside of its kickstarter. Therefore, SP is exploring alternative payment options. I still like my episodic idea a lot better because you could set lower price-points, but maybe that would take too much engine rejiggering to be viable, or perhaps there was a licensing issue, who knows.

  19. That type of messy text is almost always an indicator of non unicode settings and/or time format not being set in Japanese. If you are 100% sure everything is set to Japanese, then the other possibility is you not having installed the language packs that come with the Japanese fonts. I can't think of any other possibility in this scenario. https://vndb.org/v17632

  21. My anime would take place in alternative world where a war is being carried out, something like skynet from terminator happened. The main character, a guy around 30 years old that has a terminal illness. He is shy, without close friends, average guy, not genius not ugly but not handsome either, just a normal guy who is going to die very soon and didn't enjoy his life because of his illness and the war that's going on. One day he founds out that has the ability to fight this "skynet", something like neo in the matrix. He is really angry, why can he fight it? He doesn't even have the time to win the war, also why would he even bother saving everyone or fighting in the first place? Nobody really cares about him and he is going to die soon anyways. And that's when everything begins Sounds really lame but I would actually like to see it xD having virtual reality fights, his thoughts about his illness and shitty life (existentialism) and now having this power to fight but not being able to, this "skynet" what is it and why is it killing the humans. Does this skynet even wants to fight him and what if it offers him something, maybe being part of this virtual reality giving away mankind. So if this turns out to be a vn it would be an utsuge, with little romance, with no school bs or japanese setting and no kids as protagonists

  24. Considering how well NTY!! (No, Thank You!! for the uninformed) and COoT (Coming Out on Top for the uninformed) have sold, I don't think that's the issue. I mean, how many people do you know like trap BL games? I'm sure you can find trap lovers and then there's fujos and legit homos who would throw themselves at a BL game. Sekai Project just chose poorly.

  29. Agreed and disagreed. Agreed because people who use the Bechdel Test to brand things sexist or not sexist are bloody idiots. Disagreed because the test doesn't do any judging at all. It just asks whether or not a set of conditions is met, nothing more. In fact, the "test" is just an extrapolation from dialogue in one of Bechdel's comic strips. Essentially, two female characters wonder if there are any movies out worth watching. The three conditions are what they set for something they'd find interesting. Not sexist or not sexist, just interesting.

  32. Her point was one about first impressions. The genre is typically aimed at men. See the VNDB tag for "only-trap heroines" and there also being plenty of bishoujo VNs with the occasional crossdressing male thrown in. This might make the typical fujoshi crowd a bit more weary on it at first even if it's aimed at them.

  35. I thought the search function had been improved, but it's actually giving me a really hard time. I wanted to look for a previous "anime openings" thread we had and I typed in "anime op" in the search, limiting the search to show topics only, and I get 700+ pages of posts (not threads), most of which have nothing to do with what I searched or just mention the word "anime". I thought maybe it's the term "anime" that's just too general, so I tried something super specific and searched for "salt appreciation" and I get 5 results, 3 of which are, once again, actual posts and not topics from the salt appreciation thread, and one other that's from the Love Live thread that also mentions "salt" once. So basically when you select "topics" as a filter, it's actually lumping together topics AND posts, this makes for searching threads a really big hassle.

I think we've got some new (possibly better?) replacements: (BEST) Use the "New Content" button (link). You can use the filters on the left to sort content types (forums, blogs, statuses, etc.), how content relates to you (stuff you've posted in, started, etc.), and by time period (since last log-in, yesterday, the last week, month, etc.) (Alternate) For monitoring content you made, you can keep an eye on it by going to your profile > clicking "See My Activity", and then using the sort options on the left-hand side (ex: link to my profile with sorting options)

  43. I've apparently used up my quota of likes today, I'll need to revisit this thread tomorrow. Voices are incredibly expensive, $40 is out of the price range most people are willing to spend on VNs, some people (unknown how many) don't care about voices, the half-price offer might be a way to entice those looking for a good read (and who don't care about voices) to splurge. $20 is about the price of a book, which seems more reasonable when people are looking to buy a VN. Take me, for example. I never listen to voices when I play a VN, I read quickly and waiting for the lines to be voiced is annoying, especially when the voices are in another language and you can't pick up a lot of the verbal cues. So, 40 US dollars is about 55 Aus dollars, and being a book nerd I have alternative sources of entertainment, thus the VN had better be DAMN good for me to buy. At 20 US dollars on the other hand, well... I may impulse buy that one day, or I'll buy it if I'm curious. The lack of voices doesn't impact me. I'm pretty happy with the decision by Sekai, I don't know why people are mocking it. Quite a few of the most owned VNs on Steam aren't voiced btw, so not everybody considers it a 'must have' feature. EDIT REASONS - Fiddling with font.

  44. Let's complain about the fact that they'll be selling voices for 20$, shall we? Let us also disregard the fact the the price of the Visual Novel with voices is fairly reasonable for Visual Novel standards, while the no voice version is actually fairly cheap. The price for full length voiced Visual Novels usually are in the 35-60$ range, so I see absolutely no reason to complain about this. They aren't removing content and selling the removed content at absurd levels. They're removing the content and making a cheaper version instead.

  45. Oh yeah? Well I reject your rejection of my test. Bet you weren’t expecting that, huh? HA! Everyone’s experience with a work is going to be subjectively different, of course. “I was pressed for time, so I only read the main route of Steins;Gate.” That’s completely valid — but it doesn’t change the content of what you didn’t read. “I was tired and had a head cold, so I started skipping over those bits in A Song of Ice and Fire where the author started geeking out about characters’ genealogy.” That’s also completely valid — but it doesn’t mean those sections weren’t there. (And boring as all hell.) There’s a definable corpus to a VN text. There aren’t infinitely possible outcomes that need to be interpolated. The VN has a limited number of branching plot lines — usually a half-dozen or so — each of which read like short novellas. Taken as a whole they comprise the body of the work. And it’s that work to which the world-renowned Darbury Test™ can be applied. But keep in mind, this test proves nothing. It’s an interesting thought experiment in how narratives are constructed and populated, nothing more.

Also, if ITH doesn't like Japanese characters in the H-code, rename your exe to game.exe and use /HSN-8@48A37:game.exe instead of the one above.

  47. A disproportionately long common route detracts from the relationship one has with a particular heroine, in my opinion. I believe that it should serve as an introduction, albeit an extended one, that allows the player to reasonably choose his heroine by getting to know the selection better. Therefore, I prefer a game in which the common route doesn't exceed half of the total playtime. There are plenty of good games that defy this, like Hoshimemo and Rewrite, but I think it would be better if they were constructed around a shorter common route.
