Majikoi A Translation Project Discussion
Mugi and 2 others reacted to CeruleanGamer for a topic
No need to waste your time and resources on something thats already done. Anyone complaining about the Sayaka patch are spoiled brats who have English majors or something. It's fine, readable, and understandable.... and pretty sure anyone with a functional brain can analyze 100% of what's going on. Although something that might need to be addressed is the error that happens when you go to the scene gallery that crashes the game when you have the Sayaka patch installed.3 points -
The diary of a boy who is home alone for ten days
AaronIsCrunchy and one other reacted to Mugi for a topic
So, my family has gone on vacation and I am left to fend for myself and watch over the dogs. Thing is, I've never been home alone for more than a couple days, and even then I was starting to go crazy. I'm 18 but still don't have my drivers license, so I can't really go anywhere (not that i'd go anywhere anyways, antisocial for life ), and I always start to get paranoid when I'm home alone at night. Anyways, I have nothing better to do so I will make a diary of sorts detailing what goes on around here for the next ten days. It will probably be pretty boring, but I guess the tale of what goes through a paranoid teens head when left alone for a little over a week could be interesting. Anyways, stick around..or don't, as long as at least one person is enjoying it i'll keep it going. I'll be updating it every day, so if I don't..I'm probably sleeping dead. Welp, i'm going to sleep now, lets hope I don't get robbed2 points -
Weabooism: The experience, its causes (in Westerners), and tempering it with doses of reality
Mr Poltroon and one other reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
Hello, my name is Clephas, and I am/was a weaboo. *snickers at the AA reference* I'm mostly posting on this matter to give those otakus who aren't necessarily weaboos an idea of what it is like to be a weaboo (ignoring social problems, for the moment, haha) and just why we exist in the first place. First, to correct a common misconception... not all weaboos are solely obsessed with Japanese culture/history/etc. In fact, most Western ones are or eventually become interested in all Asian cultures. There are a number of reasons for it usually starting with an obsession with Japan, and I'll try to cover them all for you. The most obvious reason is that Japan's culture is so obviously different from anything in the average Westerner's personal experience (extracting those that come from first-generation Asian immigrant families). To be blunt, the average American can at least guess at European sensibilities and the average European can do the same, with some mental effort. We share a basic religious background, our social contracts are based on the same basic philosophy (with differences in preferences), and we tend to have similar cultural ancestors if we look back into history. Heck, even most of Latin American can say the same. So, for the average white-on-white Westerner (or Hispanic as the case may be), there might be numerous personal differences, but the actual cultural differences are in the details rather than the base elements. On the other hand, there is literally no common base between us and most Asian cultures, save that which we forcibly transplanted during the colonial days of the past two centuries. Whereas we experienced various types of paganism and polytheism followed by Christianity, they experienced Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shinto... the list goes on. Not only that, the way we developed our cultures was essentially different. Confucianism in China (and the symbol of the Emperor in Japan) provided a sense of structure and continuity for centuries that altered greatly the way Chinese see the world even today, though most of its precepts have been altered almost beyond recognition in the millennia since their development. This sense of continuity (in aspects other than philosophical) over such a vast period of time is perhaps one of the biggest causes of differences between Chinese culture in particular and Asian culture in general. To be blunt, when the Chinese were already an Empire, our ancestors were mostly banging on drums in small settlements across the face of Europe, begging the elements not to starve our children or flood us out. The 'weight' of culture is so much greater in Japan in China that Westerners in general and Americans in particular can't help but be impressed (or offended/frightened as the case may be) on first encounter with it. That said, whether that first impression turns to fascination or apathy is entirely based on the individual. People that are more curious are more likely to get sucked into it, whereas those who prefer what they already have are more likely to simply set aside that first impression and move on. Another reason is that Japan is really really good at 'advertising' its culture... without really trying. How many of you watched Pokemon, DBZ, or even Voltron or Robotech as kids without even knowing what it was? I think you'd be surprised at how many otakus received an early baptism of Japanese ideas that planted the seeds for an eventual otaku and/or weaboo transformation. For that matter, how many of you saw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (new or old) or one of the more modern Batman movies? Perhaps because of the intimate role we played in rebuilding post-war Japan, as well as the stream of Japanese who immigrated after the war, Japanese influence touches lightly on a great deal of our urban society (less so on the rural, though). The 'second baptism' that most Americans experience is negative... it is history class when you hit WWII. The ferocity and apparent insanity (in the average Westerner's eyes) of the Japanese during the war causes an almost involuntary fascination in those who read about it, that frequently leads to a search for answers as to just why they acted the way they did during the war. This inevitably leads to the samurai culture (both popular and historical), thus frequently creating new weaboos in droves, despite the fact that the WWII history is pretty horrifying the way it is presented (and even worse in reality). No one is more mouthy and annoying than a new convert of any sort... and those weaboos that most annoy people are generally this type... the ones who haven't yet realized that their obsession can annoy others and thus can't stop themselves from chattering endlessly about some new aspect they discovered along the way, as if they were the first to find that particular fact out. Tips for tempering your obsession If you are a weaboo, it is almost inevitable you will say too much to someone who isn't interested at some point. In that way, it is a lot like standard otakuism. However, if you want to at least limit your annoyance factors, here are a few tips. 1- Don't beautify every single aspect of Japanese culture you find. Samurai culture led to the insane nationalism and mass suicides of WWII. Geisha were glorified prostitutes (albeit artistically beautiful ones). Ninja were spies descended from thieves and common murderers. (etc. etc.) 2- Be aware that Japanese culture can take some seriously ugly turns in the modern era (the fact that police don't get involved in domestic affairs, the weak rape laws and enforcement of those laws, bullying in schools and at work, hikikomori, karoushi). 3- Be aware that the excessive pride of some Japanese has led to a resurrection of the same nationalism that caused their involvement in WWII (modern historical revisionism focused on WWII and the events immediately preceding it is a prime example of this). 4- The Japanese really did do most of the horrible things their neighbors said they did... not to mention the POW camps where they held the Philippines US troops during the war. 5- Japanese gun control only works because they have no history of regular people possessing personal arms. Well, that ends my lecture for the day.2 points -

Shiny Days (Not Completed) JASTUSA Summary When Sekai gets sick and asks Setsuna to take over for her at her part-time job at Cafe Radish, Setsuna takes the job even though she doesn't like the revealing uniforms and has no experience as a waitress. However, instead of seeing Makoto more often, she has an unfortunate accident during her first meeting with Inori, who ends up becoming her roommate. Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order Upon playing Shiny Days the first choice of the game will decide on who you are going to end up with. It will set you to Inori's Route or Setsuna's Route. Sickness
Forgetful Frank reacted to Ka-Aniki for a topic
Summary/Plot Sickness is a Visual Novel following the life of Koro, a high school student turned violent criminal. Following the deaths of his parents, Koro is left without a home or source of income. All he has is his twin sister, Sara, who he promises to provide for, even if doing so means throwing his life away. Using the entirety of their savings, the two move to another city, wherein Koro quickly finds work. Sara commutes to her old school, Koro works long, physically-demanding hours, and the two survive off instant food, barely scraping by. It isn't a happy life, but they make it work. Or at least they did, until a violent outburst set into motion a rapid descent. Amid a physical altercation with his boss, Koro blacks out, waking up to find a corpse laying at his feet. His knuckles bloody, his muscles aching, he realizes that he has just murdered his boss, the person responsible for his continued well-being. But rather than lament the loss of life, all Koro can think of is how badly he needed the money, and what he'll do next to get it. Drawn by the scent of blood, one of Koro's coworkers, a young man with criminal connections, offers him a not so legal revenue stream, one encouraging violent behavior and rewarding the capable. And from there, everything spirals out of control. As it turns out, Koro has a knack for crime, and the petty reservations he had about such acts don't last long. For the well-being of his sister, as well as his own self-interest, he becomes a killer for hire, taking out people anybody his new boss tells him to. He quickly adapts to life as a killer, adopting a double life his sister can never know about. But his new life is not without trouble. Facing death on a weekly basis is only the beginning; between avoiding police detection, eyewitnesses, and even the malice of his fellow professional killers, Koro's new life looks to be the death of him. Will Koro manage to survive long enough to keep his promise to his sister? Will he turn tail and escape from this life of crime, finding solace in the company of someone or something else? Or will he be hunted down and killed before he ever gets the chance? Main Characters Sara Tesla - Koro's twin sister Sara is a high school student who harbors complex feelings. To her brother, Sara is an angelic sister with a loving nature and endless affection; an image she cultivates and builds on daily. To everyone else, however, Sara is narcissistic and thoroughly two-faced. Family aside, Sara doesn't care for other people in the slightest, and as a result of her desperately trying to hide this fact, her family mistakenly believe Sara to be bipolar. Karasu - An up and coming crimelord Karasu builds his wealth through a variety of "services", including, but not limited to, gambling, corporate espionage, and organ trafficking. Above all, however, Karasu is most famous for providing "waste disposal" for neighboring towns, whether they request his services or not. His ultimate goal is to build an empire he can share with his beloved "children"; interesting individuals he has taken under his wing and granted a new lease on life. Though many view him as a sadistic narcissist who will stop at nothing to obtain what he wants, Karasu is ultimately a simple businessman who displays affection only for a chosen few. Sai - Karasu's right-hand man Sai is Karasu's most trusted and capable employee, responsible for overseeing his most lucrative business ventures, despite always working in the shadows. He is also responsible for “breaking in” new recruits, and as such becomes Koro's teacher. Unrivaled in what he does, Sai is a ruthless killer who feels no remorse; those who get on his bad side seldom live long enough to realize it. The only things more important to Sai than his work are his daughter's well-being and happiness. Misa - Sai's daughter Misa is a teenage girl who wishes for a normal life. Being the daughter of a professional killer (and protective father), however, Misa has trained from a young age in order to protect herself from the dangers of the world, and in doing so inevitably became aware of her father's line of work. As her father's work absorbed her life, Misa adapted her skillset to match those of a killer, using her youth and small figure to become the youngest and most discreet killer among her peers. Outside of work, Misa is still just a young girl. She's very friendly, once she warms up to someone, and is protective of those close to her. Now that I'm not on a mobile device, here's a little rant on this stupidity. This also goes for 99% of "simulator games" out there. The whole "simulator" trend was started by one game, and that game is Surgeon Simulator. The point of Surgeon Simulator was to be a joke, a parody of its title, by throwing you into a ridiculous situation where you're suppose to operate on a patient using really wonky controls and dealing with crazy physics. So you weren't really simulating what being a real surgeon was like, and that was the whole gag. Why was Surgeon Simulator a success though? While there are different opinions, I personally think we can attribute the success to a few factors. First off, Surgeon Simulator had a beginning and an end. You knew what you were supposed to do, you were rewarded for doing things, and that made you feel like you were making your time investment worthy. Secondly, while the controls were pretty crazy, they still managed to let you do things as long as you got the hang of it. It was a learning experience for sure, but one that was made fun by all the different situations you had to adapt to. Lastly, Surgeon Simulator actually felt like it had effort put into it. You see, while Surgeon Simulator did come off as a whacky physics game, the fact of the matter is this was very much intentional and the game was made to function correctly with these crazy physics. Yes, things might end up all over the place and you might break some stuff, but the game's core was built around making you work around these scenarios, and that's why it worked so damn well. Fast forward a bit and you do have games that managed to grasp this working concept and mold it into something unique. Known examples would be "Goat Simulator" and "I Am Bread". Both these titles managed to create controlled chaos that was fun to play and gave its fanbase something to work towards. So why am I saying all this? Basically to illustrate everything these recent simulator games are not doing. What most developers of simulator games don't realise is that, what makes the good simulator games is their content, not lack thereof. We don't play goat simulator just because the physics are broken, we play Goat Simulator because on top of having weird physics, these broken physics are put in there to allow you to achieve things. Why is this Yohjo Simulator stupid? Because all it does is letting you play with the environment and then that's it, you've discovered everything the game has to offer. There's nothing to earn, nothing to work towards, nothing to gain, there's just broken physics in a sandbox environment. But if I had to point out what I most hate about developers who make these kinds of games, its their sheer lack of self awareness, or rather, the way they pretend to be dumb and write off their poorly done game as "satire". From the Greenlight page: You see this shit right here? This is the kind of horse hockey ideals that need to disappear from developing. Writing off "there's no goal" does not automatically mean it will make your game a fun and creative experience. Minecraft has no explicit goal either, but you know all the content it provides allows you to do something fun. Yohjo Simulator though? Well you can kick walls around. Ain't that fucking fun? "You can decide the goal for yourself". Well, sure, but what goal? There's absolutely nothing to do! "It's the same as in life". Bruh, that's so deep, you should post that on /r/ShowerThoughts And then the cherry on top, "this is an amazingly realistic simulator". Trying to pretend you're dumb, that you yourself understand your game is a joke and laughing it off in the description, shamelessly not caring about the fact you're attempting to sell people an empty box. But Yohjo Simulator is just one of thousands of "simulator" games that haunt Steam Greenlight. Countless shameless "developers" attempt to patch together some assets in some random game engine to create some sandbox environment where you move around and interact with pointless shit. It never seems to end. For every good simulator game there's 10000 crappy ones. And why? Because people upvote it if you just sugarcoat it enough. Because if it's "memey" enough, it's probably going to get through, and it's a darn shame. I beg of you, if you care about any form of quality control on games, please don't upvote this kind of crap.1 point
-
Do not fear, one of my many agents already redirected me here! I personally think we should appreciate the realism this game brings. The only possible reaction to a cute loli randomly destroying things through headbutts and kicks is to run and dance in your undies. I give this a liquid Would let the loli headbutt me all day long / no number is high enough to avoid being easily surpassed by this masterpiece. Silly Aaraon, this is the obvious and only logical evolution of Goat Simulator, not a parody! And with my job done:1 point

Obtaining VNs
CeruleanGamer reacted to AaronIsCrunchy for a topic
The thing is, there's a lot of things that go into VN production that means that this price is, from a purely economic point of view, generally justifiable. For each VN, you need people that can draw - not just sprites, but other things too, like CGs, backgrounds and all the other odds and sods that make it look pretty. You then need someone to write it - many VNs are longer than some novels (20k and above words are pretty standard), and then you need someone to do music. And advertising. And voice acting, regularly. Many have opening themes from external artists too. If you're getting a translated VN, someone needs to translate that shit too. VNs are a comparatively niche market even in Japan (I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong) so to pay for all of this, and to make enough of a profit going to have made it worth their time, I would say that $40 is a bloody good price.1 point -

For some games, skipping things is not the end of the world. For others, it can definitely deter from the enjoyment. there are some games that skipping levels would a not problem (like fighting games with no plot, and fps games that have no story, many Roguelikes ). but most games would be nearly destroyed by all levels unlocked from the start with no limits placed on the player like ( most jrpgs, most vn, most platformer, story driven action games, etc). there is a place for games that have no limits to the freedoms to the player, but this should be the case to all games shows a lack of understanding of the medium, or a they just believe gamers need someone to think for them, whatever the case that shows once again kotaku screwed the pooch.1 point -

My goal was to have the first draft of Benkei done by the end of the month; I'm not 100% confident that's happening at this point, but it shouldn't take too much more. Granted, that's a far cry from "done," but still. I will be shocked if things take till mid-2016. As for Sayaka's... For those of you who don't, he is a Youtuber that makes video game reviews and first impression videos, sounds pretty basic but I've always found him to be extremely entertaining. He is also part of the Co-Optional Podcast with Dodger and Jesse Cox. Now to the point, a while back he was diagnosed with what I believe was prostate cancer (correct me if i'm wrong), and earlier this year it seemed as if he overcame it, the cancer in his bowel was completely gone and he seemed to be in the clear. However, about 20 hours ago he sent out a tweet saying that he didn't know how to tell us something, and linked the above website (I think it's some sort of blog website?) saying that the cancer has spread to his liver and that the average life expectancy is 2-3 years. I just wanted to put this out there since he's a really awesome guy, and it'd be great if you guys could wish him luck, pray for him (if you are religious), etc. I don't know..i'm just kind of shocked I guess and felt the need to type this1 point

Opinions on the Sakura games.
VirginSmasher reacted to CeruleanGamer for a topic
Hope it's not the latter. People are missing out on other amazing VNs out there just because they had a horrendously boring experience with Sakura series. This is exactly why Ive been preaching that VNs are not just pretty girls, sex, and cliche romance settings.1 point -
A shame, I can remember some of the H OVA adaptations of their games as being my first foray into hentai and thanks to that I remember the first of their games I played which I still have a soft spot for to this day: Words Worth and Shin Mikagura Shoujo Tanteidan. Can't say I was a super fan like many here (though I understand how it feels to see a favorite studio die or become a shambling husk of it's former self), but I understand elf's importance in the history of eroge to post this as an appropriate send off music:1 point

The problem, for me at least, is that URLs get automatically hyperlinked as soon as I press enter or even just "submit reply", thus the img tag never embeds anything and looks like this every time: [img=http://i.imgur.com/aMeQluL.jpg] Although the problems this has posed have pretty much been made null since images now embed automatically. Edit: This completely went over my head before but I just tried using the regular img tag where you open and close the code and that actually does work fine and embeds the image, although it seems glitchy and adds random block characters every time you touch it. So I guess it's just the shortened version of the img tag that got borked. Interesting.1 point

Thoughts on the preview button: It doesn't seem to interpret BBcode so it doesn't show anything that the wysiwyg editor isn't already showing, nor does it show you what your post will look like in the forums. To put it bluntly, it's completely pointless. And although Nosebleed says that img codes don't work, they've worked for me. I'm not sure what the issue is.1 point

Does anyone here produce/remix music as well as master it? I've recently been practicing the process of mastering on a few random tracks with a ton of dynamic range to get it looking something like this without it sounding horribly distorted, with less than stellar results. Here's a track I've most recently mastered: 人の夫. It doesn't sound very clean since It's pretty much compressed to hell and back, but it is the best I've managed to do so far. [Visual rep.] It's a marginal improvement over my first few attempts, but I still know that it's nowhere near as good as it could be in comparison to other songs I've heard that are loud as fuck, but sound surprisingly clean despite some having a waveform that looks like an almost perfect rectangle. Anyway, feel free to criticize my lame mastering attempt of an otherwise bangin' track. if you have any knowledge on the subject of mixing and/or mastering, some input would be appreciated.1 point

So. Turns out the BBCode plugin is poison. We won't be re-implementing it. Let us all praise Nay for saving our lives, and for teaching me to make regular backups. Longer Version:1 point -

As a great character said before. "MY EYES! THE GOGGLES DO NOTHING!" Oh why... Oh why did I disable warnings for NSFW images?! Quick, we need to find a way to completely forget about this!1 point -
***SPOILERS*** Komorebi no Nostalgica: Why I think this is the best AI VN out there.
Darklord Rooke reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
Komorebi no Nostalgica is one of the more interesting VNs I've read in the past three years. I occasionally go back and play one of its paths when I want to restore my faith in VNs, and one of its primary themes is artificial intelligence. There are a number of different viewpoints represented in the VN about AIs, ranging from classic horror stories and instinctive repulsion to acceptance and/or affection. Cinema, who is the source of most of the central conflicts of the VN, is a humanoid robot created before the big war that basically wiped out the internet archives and a lot of humanity's knowledge of its own past. She was apparently customized immensely by the man known only as the 'Store Manager', who ran an underground video rental shop with her as the clerk. She isn't a heroine, but it wouldn't be incorrect to state that she is the focus of all the major events of the story. In many ways, her personality and setting resemble that of the heroine from Planetarian, and those who played that ancient will probably be able to easily recognize the earnest, almost childlike nature of the two. The generation of humanoid robots after her eventually developed a self-determining will and intelligence, becoming fully sentient, sparking a pogrom (of humans slaughtering robots that were suddenly seen as a threat) that led straight into a war that shattered human society as it existed at the time. The war was... a draw, though a draw that turned out more to the advantage of the robotic Metasera than to that of humanity. During the war, Cinema was put into hibernation and hidden by her creator, until she was awakened by the protagonist and his hare- *coughs* friends. The Metasera, having gained the right to self-determination in exchange for forfeiting their right to aggressive self-defense, live in small arcologies based in just about every major city of the planet, learning from and aiding humans as they seek to evolve their budding intelligence and emotions further. One of the heroines, Fluorite, is a Metasera, and it is through her that you get the writer's insight into the idea of the results of a 'naturally occurring' AI. Cinema, on the other hand, presents an entirely different path to the same goal... she is a low-spec virtual intelligence that is designed to grow into full sentience and in the end gains a far wider spread of emotions than the Metasera... while also showing off a surprising degree of emotional development, even before she gains that sentience. The idea of an AI that develops intelligence before emotion and causes a war (the Metasera) versus an AI that develops intelligence after emotion and is a friend to humanity from the beginning (Cinema) is one of the many hidden themes of the VN. There were innumerable times in the VN that I felt intellectually stimulated or driven to express raw emotion. The story is just that powerful, after all. Moreover, the protagonist and friends are of the first generation to grow up without knowledge of the world prior to the Metasera, and it is the writer's portrayal of this aspect that is frequently the most interesting.1 point -
Nay and I put up a copy of the old forums. It wont let you post new content, but you can go back to old posts, click "Edit", and copy all the contents (and put them in the new boards). I'm still working on the IPB 4 problems, mind you, but this is a critical tool which I hope will help. Links in this thread: Old Forums Backup Online: Use It to Grab Lost/Corrupted Content1 point

A few days ago @renpytom on twitter made this graph: Commenting: "I plotted the time between Sakura _ games vs. time, and in a few weeks there will be a new Sakura game every second." Little did he know that right after, the trend would confirm itself with the announcement of the greenlight for Sakura Beach 2 by Winged Cloud and Sekai Project! (not even gonna bother putting the source) Since it seems like Winged Cloud and SP finally realized they didn't even need to bother to make new shit and the scenario is probably randomly generated by a monkey simulator software, we can probably expect the trend to keep going, so I thought we'd make only one thread for the future Sakura Series announcements and all the wailing about how it's all shit and SP is hitler etc etc.1 point

This is how it probably goes down in their meeting. "All right boys! We have 35 hours until we release a new game. Do any of you guys have an idea for the story? *Jenkins raises his hand* "Last night I watched a porno so what if we just use the same story from the porno for our game. All we have to do then is just take out all of the sex." "Jenkins! You're a Genius! You're getting a promotion and you get the honor of naming the game!" "Oh boy!" "Harvey! Get the wheel!" "Yes sir!" *Harvey pulls out a giant wheel* "Okay Jenkins! Spin that wheel!" "Okay sir!" *tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick... tick...tick* "What does it say Jenkins?" "Our next game will be called Sakura Exile!" " Once again you have blown my socks off Jenkins! I'm giving you a raise!" Or something like that.1 point
