Akihabara Guidebook Preview - Part 01
Hanako and 5 others reacted to OriginalRen for a topic
Visiting Japan sometime in the near future? Want a small preview into what sorts of goodies will be featured in the Akihabara guidebook I am currently working on for the end of the year? Here is the 1st part of a quick guide all about the strip. Use it to help you understand a little bit of fun history about the district of Akihabara, or just read it for fun! Whatever the reason, if you'd like me to add more stores and give you more of a preview in the future, let me know. The reason I made this post was to give some of you an idea of how much time and effort I am putting into this guide, and how it is completely different from the other guides out there (if they exist). While a lot of this content is featured on my YouTube channel, not all of you watch that, so here is a nice little condensed bit of information for those that appreciate text more. You can now see why I want to hire a professional photographer, and why I think translating this into a multitude of languages would be awesome. Again, I am serious about the Kickstarter and really want to make this a reality. Enjoy! Important: When checking out stores, refer to the map located in the spoiler tag below. Center of Akihabara: Sofmap #2: Akihabara Radio Kaikan: Onoden + Laox: Volks: Random Electronic Shops: Sofmap #1 + Sega Arcades: Adores Karaoke: Random Hobby Shops: Akky Souvenir Shops: Comic Zin: Sofmap #3: Taito Game Station: Akiba Zone: Comic Toranoana: Don Quixote + Tsukumo: Roll&Roll Station + Melonbooks + Tenplant: Getchu: Kimidore Wallscroll: TamTam Hobby Shop: Figure Hobby Shop: Akiba Island: And that's the end of the 1st part. If you want me to finish doing a few more stores (again, not featuring everything since a lot of this is expanded on in the guidebook I am working on), let me know. Thanks for reading, and I hope it helps!6 points -
Hey everybody, After a long and exhausting weekend of RL studying and working on really stupid behind-the-scenes stuff here on the site (I promise I'm not avoiding you, maef...) (), I've finally fixed our donations app. Thus! I'd like to explain the way I've been handling the donation system and get your feedback. (And, yes, this does mean the "Donate" button on the menu finally works : P) Here's an in-depth breakdown of the development fund. The floor is open to discussing anything on the topic, however. It's been a few months since I opened the floor to feedback, so I thought this was a good time to do so. Why accept donations? I'm committed to keeping the community up and running. I want to make sure Fuwanovel is here tomorrow, in six months, in a year, and more. While I am able to budget my RL funds in such a way to carry the cost, alone, enough people contacted me this spring about opening donations that I decided to give it a go.Right now the donations system will only exist until I can make the site self-sufficient through other ways (affiliate links, mostly -- I don't have any intentions at this time to try ads again)All the money donated goes back into the site. Funds first go to the current month's hosting bills, then to a “rainy day” fund, and then towards other site development per our site financial plan (which includes stuff like licensing fees, an eventual makeover for the Reviews Hub, and developing the new front site). How the Program is Currently Run People can choose to donate to the site through Paypal, and in exchange they are given "goodies" on the forums as a token of thanks.Up until now users had to donate directly through paypal and had to wait for me to manually grant their goodies. That's still an option, but I've finally finished setting up a way to auto-apply goodies by starting the donation within our forums' commerce app. Either way, Paypal is handling the donations from start to finish and I'm not seeing any of the details. The advantage of the new app, however, is that it auto-applies your goodies and doesn't auto-charge you each month.Current "Goodies" For Backers (Updated 11/02/15) PM allowance increased to 700More than twice as much rep allowance (up to 25 “Likes” per day)You can customize your profile page with backgrounds and colors (see mine for an example)If you can gather enough of you together to discuss it, we can change the "Backer" badge whenever you want! After 6 continuous months of support, you may PM Tay and inquire about "The Order". Should you prove worthy, you will be inducted into The Great Secret. Which doesn’t exist. Just ask Flutterz. These aren't the droids you're looking for. Move along, now. Move along.Ideology About Goodies I realize that not everyone is in a position to contribute to the development fund. That’s absolutely okay. The goal with the Development Fund isn't to raise a ton of money or create an elite race of Backers, it's meant to help raise funds to alleviate the site's cost. I tried my best to make sure these “goodies” weren’t granting some users exclusive site features while denying them to others. AKA: a regular user and a Backer are going to have access to all the same features and options on Fuwanovel -- there aren't any elite boards or secret Backer clubs. For our current Backers Short version: nothing changes for you (you don't need to cancel your paypal donation and re-sign up through the forums app)If you decide you do want to switch to managing your donations through the forums app, then I put instructions for cancelling your manual paypal subscription in the donate page.3 points

Player Mentors Program - Mentors needed!
Takeshira and 2 others reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
Dear whoever-wrote-the-'Looking-for-more-Player-Mentors'-forum-announcement. In a bid to improve my navigational e><perience on this forum, 'surfing' I believe is the modern term, I sought to remove the large, blocky announcement atop the boards proper. See I had already read it, and it was rectangular and coloured (when viewed through my awesome theme) a deep blue, which thoroughly ruined the aesthetics. So, following your friendly advice I gently pressed the '><' button with the e><pectation that this eyesore would immediately vanish from my field of view. Nothing happened. I pressed it once more, and again nothing happened. What was this trickery I had succumbed to? I did not know, but whoever was behind this ruse didn't know who they were dealing with - I know how to deal with such situations. Force. It is, after all, the go-to solution for all tricky problems. And so I began to hammer on the button using my forefinger with formidable gusto and strength, and when that didn't work I used my fist, and when that didn't work a hammer and after all this it still remained; still blue, still large, still... blobby. Sitting there at the top of the forum mocking my efforts. Alas, I can no longer follow your suggestion, for I seemed to have driven an... object through the '><' button on my keyboard and it has sustained, erm, damage in the process of being... destroyed. You will note my '><'es no longer contain an '><' at all, and I have been reduced to dreaded leetspeak to appro><imate the letter in question. The agony of being limited only to 25 letters of the alphabet cannot be e><pressed in words. Pity me, for my troubles are great. Yours in suffering, Rooke. ....... PS: A good natured and guffaw happy friend has alerted me to my error. I have reread your above announcement and my blunder is now clear. Ah, yes, 'click with the mouse,' I now see where I went wrong. Please ignore all of the above PPS: I mean it, pretend it never happened3 points -
Fuwans, How Do You Bond With Your Siblings?
Fred the Barber and one other reacted to Nosebleed for a topic
A little "update" after a couple weeks. I really appreciate everyone who's dropped by this thrad and left their opinions and experiences. It's quite surprising how many different relationships you can with your siblings and I learned quite a bit from all this. (Mainly that there's no one single way to properly deal with your sister) After making this thread, I've become a little more proactive in talking to my sister, although we don't make much small talk yet. I mostly tend to listen to whatever she has to say, but I do try to talk back rather than just walking away now. I've begun helping her with her homework more frequently and actually staying with her in the room rather than just answering her when she has a question and leaving. This also led me to learn I suck at 5th grade math problems, but on that end both me and my sister could relate. Not much has happened since, but we are going to the movies this Sunday and, as some already suggested, this should be the easier way to get along without an excessive amount of interaction, so I'm looking forward to it. Not sure if anyone would be interested but I figured, as the one who made the thread, I'd let you know I did try to do something about the whole situation and things are going okay~2 points -

I'll be perfectly honest... having finished Shizuma's path, the only thing I can say is that he was a total douche-bag intelligent self-hating moron to the end. Being inside his mind was depressing, right from the beginning to the end. While I loved most of the other characters on his path, I hated him and his heroines, also from beginning to end. Similar to Kai, he is actually more effective on foot than he is riding in Stigma. Stigma is slightly more durable than Alfaria, and she definitely has a lot better support skills. However, when it came down to it, all that meant was that I had to keep a piece of deadweight alive through the entire game. Gameplay-wise, that is a nightmare in both Kai's and Shizuma's paths. I did like the characters in Shizuma's path more than the ones in Kai's, because they seemed more human (except the psychopath). Unfortunately, there really was no reason why they should have stuck with Shizuma. He resents them through most of the game, takes out his frustrations on them frequently, and generally makes an ass of himself. Also, there was a huge load of 'what was the point of all that?' self-pity from Shizuma for about the last half of his path that made me feel like I wanted to smash his head in. Shizuma's story is dark... but it isn't the kind of darkness you can sit back and take pleasure in. It is the kind of darkness that gives you a headache because it is largely born out of Shizuma's idiocy after a certain point of the game. Yes, I unreservedly hate Shizuma. I don't mind characters that get twisted by the things they have to do, but self-hating, self-pitying idiots with 18 Intelligence and 0 Wisdom make me want to smash things. He does not evolve or really learn from his mistakes, and his paranoia gets old, fast. Story-wise... there are way too many inconsistencies between the two paths, even where they meet. I had to honestly throw my hands up in frustration at trying to figure out how they meant the game to make sense. Not only that, but throughout Shizuma's path you see bits of the backstage that should have really come to the forefront at some point but fizzle out, with the inability to access the third path making me want to do the 'crazy dance'. There should be a third path, because none of the crap that happens in this game is conclusive in any way. They hinted at a third path before release. So why can't I access it after completing both paths once, I wonder? If they mean to release it as a sequel, I'm just going to forget about this game entirely. I am also at least partially sure that heroine choice actually effects things more than it really should in this type of game, due to the sheer amount of extra battles I had to fight in comparison to Kai's path. Since Veridadear is a really easy to notice secondary heroine, I suppose going down her path probably creates a much different outcome from choosing Alfaria. Choosing Stigma in Shizuma's path resulted in a nightmare rollercoaster of endless death that made me bored halfway through (I know that sounds impossible - me loving endless death -, but the way the story for Shizuma's path stumbled so completely after the turning point made me want to scream). Update Ok, the thing you have to do to access the third path is to complete Stigma's and Alfaria's path, as I suspected *sighs*. The difference in length and difficulty between Alfaria's path and Veridadear's path is pretty extreme... and at the end, after playing through the equivalent of two full VN-rpgs? You have to play yet another path... the best thing I can say about it is that you actually find out what was going on behind the scenes to some extent early on. I'm really tired of this game... for obvious reasons. Nonetheless, I'll keep playing this until it is over, lol.2 points

Spoken language is a direct reflection of the groups of people in which it is spoken. There's absolutely nothing you can do about that, that's just the way languages work. That's also why I don't really agree with Rooke on the topic of youngsters ruining the language. But anyway. There's a reason why we talk about a "bureaucratization" of society. The problem is this managerial bullshit cancer, the effects on language, although extremely irritating, are just consequences of that. Basically we should get rid of the whole package and maybe we'll start to have discourses that make some god damn sense again.1 point

I know this is just a preview and you don't want this to be the final version, but if I may be honest, I'd really suggest toning down on the girl images in the maps themselves. They're cute, yes, but as I look at the first map by itself, a huge chunk of it is covered by anime girls and only like 40% is the actual map/guide and the detailed information about the locations or other important things only makes up a tiny box in the corner. Same thing with the sofmap map (kek), I know the design is not final by any means, but all the anime girls in it feel so out of place and distracting. The focus of a map should always be, first and foremost, to give clear instructions and to clearly illustrate the location you're looking at, only when you have that can you add things to give it more of a theme, but always keep in mind the informative nature of the map. Now I understand you don't want to have huge blank spaces, but I do feel like all these anime girls are very distracting and stand out in a negative way in these maps. When I read a map, I want the first thing to come to my attention to be, well, the information, not cute anime girls. I'm not telling you to remove all traces of anime girls, that's obviously part of the theme you're going with, and that's totally cool, but what I would suggest is definitely reduce their size and/or (this is where, if your KS is successful you could invest your money in) make them actually be helpful to the map itself, not just be standing out in the map for the sake of being there, it's just a needless distraction for people who want to read where things are, so if you can make them blend in, that would be helpful for everyone. (also, the compass doesn't need to be that big). Just my 2 cents on the matter, I do think that, overall, this is really well put together and the pictures themselves are fantastic and I can't wait to see what you can accomplish if you have the budget to make a fully original version of these maps, so don't take this as me lashing out on it, but do keep in mind that this is a guide, not an "anime butts illustration book".1 point

Don Watson on the slow death of the English Language
Darklord Rooke reacted to Zakamutt for a topic
My take would be that he dislikes distancing language and vague language, as it allows people to be more, well, distant and vague about important matters. The only real novel angle vs. Politics and the English Language (my apologies for not reading it again, so I might misremember somewhat) might be his statement that things that should not be businesses are being run as businesses. He considers such language to be on the rise, spreading to fields it had not been seen in before.1 point -

The fun in grinding
Darklord Rooke reacted to Narcosis for a topic
Topic title made me cringe. Grinding is an godawful mechanic, introduced to walk around the design limitations in most role playing oriented games; it allows for easy level-based content progression and artificially bloats the game content by tricking people into beliving they're actually doing something meaningful, while in reality they're just forced to remain in one spot for countless hours, hitting a single type of mob, over and over again.1 point -
Oh, that made me think of another turn-off. Well, less of a turn-off and more of an extreme annoyance: Side heroines who are much better than the actual heroines that don't get actual routes, even in the inevitable fandisk. Agree to both of these. Some common routes are simply too long and filled with too much unnecessary stuff that doesn't help the plot at all. It feels like a lot of it is there just to make the game longer. And there is always that one char that is awesome, but doesn't get her own route. So annoying *sigh* (Akari in kono oozora ni, tsubasa o hirogete for instance)1 point

VNs are merely a medium, for me to say I don't like VNs would be like me saying I don't like novels, or movies, or TV shows. It's a horrifically general statement that's almost guaranteed to be in error. I don't like LB because I feel there was far too much time spent faffing around in a story with a plot. I have VNs I enjoy, but sadly LB wasn't one of them. To answer your final question, I'm here to annoy Tay. I hope I'm doing a good job, I'd hate to be remiss in my duties...1 point -

One of the most stable and balanced mmorpg's in the entire history of genre; that said, I lost my hope in those games long time ago and there's been hardly anything new since the advent of first sandbox mmorpg's. If anything, we're currently stuck in a neverending circle of stagnation and the more new mmorpg's come out every year and the more oversaturated market becomes with them, the less chance there is we'll see something as magnificent as L2 or WOW back in the old days. Aside from that, I don't feel like commiting 3/4 of my life towards another game and even pay for it.1 point -

Yamato is portrayed as being a genius, but that aspect of his character isn't really written very well. Like, the game wants us to think he is and tells us he is, but from his actions and such, he doesn't seem like much of a genius. Just a somewhat smart kid. I found most of his intellectual accomplishments somewhat lackluster. I'm aware that by criticizing any aspect of Majikoi, I'm automatically put on a hitlist by certain fuwa users and will be targeted for assassination, so let me just put the disclaimer that I think it's a good and funny game and please god don't kill me.1 point
