Tutorial - How to read untranslated visual novels .
VirginSmasher and 7 others reacted to Deep Blue for a topic
You can skip this part and go to the tutorial if you want: So after doing a lot of searching I finally found the perfect text hooker to read untranslated vns in the way I want to. Say hello to Chiitrans Lite *NOTE: Please bear in mind that there is no such thing as the perfect software, this program has some issues so it might be useful to your or not. I'm doing this tutorial because I found it very useful and wanted to share it. What other softs I tried and why they didn't work for me: Visual Novel Reader *The parser is awful. (biggest problem) *It uses a lot of resources, it takes a lot to load up. *I don't use 90% of the functions. *Checking the translated words is a pain and really slow, every time you hover the mouse on the words you need to close the tab with the translation. Translation Aggregator: *You cannot full screen and read at the same time. *The interface is old and it makes it awkward to read a vn with it. It is ok if you are studying or using it to help you out for something in particular but reading a whole novel in 800x600 is not fun... All the problems I had with those programs were fixed with chiitrans. So here is my tutorial How do I start using it? IMPORTANT: THIS IS NOT A GUIDE TO SHOW YOU HOW TO USE MACHINE TRANSLATION BUT TO READ WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A PARSER (I WON'T BE ABLE TO HELP YOU IF YOU NEED TO INSTALL ATLAS OR ANY OTHER MT PROGRAM) 1) Download the software from here: https://alexbft.github.io/chiitrans/ Install .NET Framework 4 from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-ph/download/details.aspx?id=1785 and https://www.microsoft.com/download/details.aspx?id=40784 You can chose the .zip version which doesn't need an installation (portable) or the .msi installer. You don't need to download anything else! Atlas V14 if you want to. 2) Open the software after installing it or downloading it. You can either click on: A) and search for the .exe of your vn in your pc or click on B) and then execute the .exe of the novel, after that just click on C) Connect and the game will lunch. 3) Now you can use the text hooker that comes with the program itself (AGTH) which works perfect most of the times or use ITH. Once the vn is loaded it will automatically search for the text, if you don't see it click on "TL Window" and it will appear Select the correct text you want the program to show, in this case all of them were correct, sometimes it will show you one that it has the name of the character speaking, one that it doesn't, one with is just random garbage, etc. Don't forget to deselect the ones you don't want to use! You can also add codes for agth, once the novel is lunched just go into Options>Text Capture and there click on "Install user hooks" And that's pretty much it! What do I do if the program doesn't hook the text from the vn that I want to read? If the program doesn't find the text do this instead: First of all don't run the novel with chiitrans like I explained before just open the program and open the vn separately since you are not using AGTH there is no point in using chiitrans to lunch the vn. 1) Open the option menu > Text Capture> select "Capture text from clipboard" 2) Lunch ITH and hook the text of the novel (there is a tutorial at the end of this thread that will teach you how to hook the text with ITH) 3) Run the vn normally and that's it, it will automatically copy the text from ITH and pasty it on the textbox, don't use anything else while reading or it will start copying everything that you are reading. *If for any reason the program doesn't start grabbing the text from ITH, just select the text from the ITH textbox and click on copy and from then on it should work alone. 4) and that's it! Note: you can just paste text into the textbox if you want and use it as a parser for anything you want not just vn. Inside the program: Looking the translation is really easy you just need to hover the mouse over it, just like translation aggregator You can move the textbox wherever you want and make it bigger or smaller or make it transparent or just black so you can't see the background. When I go full-screen the textbox appears white, is not transparent anymore!! Help!! If the textbox changes to white when you go full screen do this. 1) Select with your mouse the menu where you can make the screen transparent 2) click on it. If you still can't fullscreen the vn and see the textbox at the same time, there are some novels (very few) that have this problem, for example Aster. There is a trick that works on some of them. For this you need Visual novel reader. 1)Download VNR from here https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B3YXxE6u-4bzc1RKWHpoLWZROTQ 2) Open your vn with VNR. 3)Once is loaded go to the side bar and click on the "FS" and use the one that suits you better, in this case was "fullscreen" and "padding" Tadaaaa When I go fullscreen I don't see the textbox Use romaji 1)Go to options 2) Parsing and select Latin You can translate words or names 1) select the words you want to translate with the right click 2) Left click and "Add new name" 3)Insert the word *This is really useful for me with names (I hate reading names) and katakana words, all the words and names that you add will stay saved and will be used next time they appear in the novel. You can add your custom list too: 1) Go to options > Parsing >Edit names... 2) you can add your list of words there, all the words and names you have added will be there too. 3) they need to be added like this: "タブー = Taboo" Sometimes some words are not correctly parsed To correct parsing errors do this (the program will remember this correction): 1)Select the text that is incorrect by selecting it with your left mouse button 2)Right click on the selected text and click on "Re-parse with selection" Finally using Atlas or any other online translator if you want (I will assume that you know how to install atlas, once installed the program doesn't need any configuration it will use it automatically): NOTE: *Here is a tutorial on how to install improve a little bit the ATLAS translation if you want: http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showthread.php/79006-fhc-dictionary-of-ATLAS-Japanese-Translator 1)Go to Option 2)Translation > display both or just translation 何 wtf atlas.. If you want to use another translator: 1) Go to Options > Translation > Additional Translators and then just select from the right box of "Available translators" and drag them to the left side of "Selected Translators" And that's it, start reading your untranslated vns fullscreen without any problems Now that you are able to read untranslated vns you are going to be the coolest guy/girl in your neighbor. ITH Guide Notes: *You can download ITH from here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/ie6ypsake9v9n6b/ITH_2015-03-04%282%29.7z and if you want to hook psp, ps2 and wii games use this ITHVNR (props to stomp for this modified version) *List of engines supported for ITHVNR *If you can't find any thread to hook with ITH then you will need to use a code for it. H-CODES list How to hook up text with ITH: 1) Open your vn first and then ITH 2) Inside ITH go to Process and select your vn from the list 3) Click on Attach and then OK 4) Once inside the vn you need to read some text 5) Select from all the rows the one that shows the text you are reading on the vn, sometimes you will have many rows to select from others just a few, in this case only 2 6) Once you see the text is being displayed on the ITH textbox, open chiitrans lite (don't connect/lunch the vn with it!) 7) Click on TL Window 8 ) Copy the text from ITH textbox and you're done. Common problems with ITH that I know of: *If the text for any reason splits and you hook half and the other half comes after so it makes the reading really annoying just change in options the "split time" from 500 to 2000.8 points -
Fuwanovel Confessions

Confession: All right Fuwanovel, I have a story to share with all of you. I have to tell it to you because my goodness, I am still laughing my ass off as I type this. So I'll let you know straight out, this is going to be a story about sex. If you aren't into that kind of stuff, feel free to skip it over because I don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. That being said, I am sure a lot of you might have guessed this by now, but my sexual life is filled with a plethora of hilarity. This story, after a year or more of no sexual activity, is no different. Do you remember the other day when I was talking about how I felt a little bit frustrated that I didn't have someone I could flirt with for fun? Well turns out my ex and I were talking about random stuff like we always do, and things started to happen earlier this evening. We ended up bringing up the fact that we were both sexually frustrated, and seeing as how we are single at the moment, we ended up hitting it off. One thing led to another and she drove over to my house to hang out. Mind you, this was at 1:30 in the morning. Now I say this because let's be honest, I don't know many friends that meet up during the early hours of the morning just to hang out. Well as you might have guessed, "hanging out" turned into "let's fuck" in no time flat. Now of course I didn't have any condoms on me when she came over. I mean, I haven't been sexually active for over a year or more, and the only reason she just so happened to be on the pill was for cycle control. So what did we do? We hopped in the car and headed into town to grab condoms at 2:00 in the morning of course! No big deal, right? The look on that cashier's face. As a young man, you always dread the day you have to go and buy your first pack of condoms. Imagine how I felt after doing this many times in the past, being 25 years old, and seeing the look of utter disappointment on her face. Simply dreadful. It didn't help that my ex decided it would be super awesome to come inside and buy them with me. That was a fun little chuckle they enjoyed having. My pride being destroyed aside, we ended up making our purchase (seriously, $20 for a pack of 36 at Walgreens?) and headed back to my place. Now being the horny little dogs we were, we threw our clothes on the floor and started going at it on my living room sofa. No problem! We finished up and decided to take a dip in my hot tub to relax. Of course she didn't have a swimsuit with her and I had no idea where mine was, so we ended up going in naked. By the way, did I mention I am currently staying at my parent's house? So things were going smoothly. The sex was great, and after spending a little bit of time in the tub, we decided that it would be a good idea to get busy once again. Now thinking I was the coolest cat this side of the Mississippi, I told my ex having hot tub sex would be fun. She agreed. Easy! So here's a tip to everyone: having sex underwater is extremely difficult. I don't know how many zero-g slams you've performed in your lifetime, but let me tell you that's the last time I consider trying that out. To give you an idea of how it felt, think beached whales. Each thrust meant floating an extra mile across the tub, and positioning meant somebody was going straight underwater in a pit of scalding hot liquid. To put it lightly, it sucked. So one thing led to another and we agreed it was impossible and a stupid idea. Of course we wanted to finish the deed though, because both of us having blue balls would have been pure torture. Our solution? We stood straight up and kept going at it! We both felt kind of kinky due to the fact that we were having outdoor sex while pretty much being fully exposed (you know, the whole voyeurism thing), and everything seemed to be going well for the most part. I use the word seem here because we all know there's more to this story. Turns out at 3:00 in the morning, my neighbor's dog had to go to the bathroom. Now seeing that his backdoor was on a porch overlooking his yard, you were easily able to look over into my yard and see what sorts of fun activities were taking place. In this particular instance, one would have been able to look over and see a certain individual plowing someone from behind. Good thing my neighbor had one of those dog doors, because who cares if the dog saw right? The next thing that happened quite literally felt like the longest minute of my life. My neighbor's dog started barking at the top of his lungs while watching me have sex with my ex. We didn't think this was a big deal because we could just easily sit down in the tub and pretend nothing was happening if the owner woke up to check on him, but of course, that wasn't the case. Dogs barking near my parent's house meant my dogs started to bark, and that was bad news bears. You see, even though I am perfectly old enough to make my own sexual decisions, I do not supersede my mom's house rules. When my dogs bark, it means they need to use the bathroom. It means that my mom needs to wake up and let them outside. It means they need to come near the hot tub. Danger Will Robinson, abandon ship! We ended up jumping out of the tub naked and sprinted into the house with our clothes. We rushed into my basement and waited until things calmed down. Luckily, my mom came downstairs and didn't bother me. She let the dogs outside and waited for them to finish their business. She didn't call to me in the basement or ask me to come and talk with her (keeping in mind we were both still naked). What a relief. So here we were laughing our asses off in the basement about what just happened, and even though we were practically dying, we both agreed that finishing up would be the best choice. I ended up bringing her into my room downstairs filled with all of my Japanese stuff and we ended up having more sex on my futon. Of course, she couldn't keep a straight face and was now laughing about how ironic it was that all of my 2D crap was surrounding us while we go at it. In the end, we didn't finish - she's was laughing too hard at this point. After that, we got dressed, talked for another half hour or so, and called it a morning. Now here I am typing this story that just happened. I have no closing words. My goodness.8 points -
UPDATE: SP will ask AKB2 about possibility of 4:3 support): http://steamcommunity.com/app/377670/discussions/0/490124466479176329/ ~~ I wanted to inform everyone that in order to achieve "HD widescreen assets" Sekai Project severely cropped all existing CGs in the laziest manner I've seen. Check this out: You can't even see his arm, the plate, a chunk of his head, the sake bottle and glass. The dead guy's arm which used to be in full view is now barely visible. When I posted these examples on steam they permanently banned me and claimed I was promoting piracy. My post was completely deleted without a trace. Not only that but someone else decided to take up the task to post a more neutral thread on steam and the thread was instantly locked. http://steamcommunity.com/app/377670/discussions/0/490124466477714445/ [Edit: as of this moment the thread that used to be locked is now also entirely deleted.] Deleting and locking anything that might criticize their shortcomings is rather petty even for Sekai Project. They're splitting releases into voiced and un-voiced versions now which is just ridiculous, what's next microtransactions? Split each route into paid dlc? They've made it clear that they treat adult content as if it were cancerous, yet they continue to pick up titles with +18 content. Personally speaking, I've been supporting visual novels for a long time now and I've bought just about every release because I used to believe in western localization and that things would improve if we showed our support. But things are just getting worse at this rate and that was more or less my wake up call to stop investing money in companies like Sekai Project. It's really tiring having to ask every time a title is announced "Will we even get the full +18 release?", "what's getting censored?", "How will it be handled?", "Do we have to buy the goddamn game twice if we also want it on steam?". Like you can't even be excited because there's so many questions left unanswered we can only expect the worst and they completely ignore us hoping we'll buy the steam version, and then announce the +18 at the last minute expecting us to double dip, rather than just offering steam keys like MangaGamer does. Not to mention they suck funds out of us through kickstarter for practically every release. They're just abusing it now, taking already translated games that fans did on their own free time, and charging us money for it while making us pay for the licensing fees. That's just fucked up. Welcome to the new EA games of Visual Novels everyone. [Edit: Looks like reddit caught wind and has been following the whole thing as well. Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. https://www.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/3rds22/gsenjou_no_maou_steam_version_169_cgs_are_cropped/ ]6 points

I know what you're thinking - 'Rooke has news? He must be taking a leave from the site.' Well... HA! Not a chance, bub. No no no no no. I must annoy Tay, and I cannot do that while off in the never never. I merely thought I might highlight the day's news. Keeping up with the world is important if you want to remain learned and engaged. PS: Please don't hurt me Technology: 'Driverless cars can now ‘see’ around corners,' is the first headline I see, an enviable trait lacking in inferior, organic organisms. This new ability is truly wondrous and will be of great benefit to everybody’s safety… until the sensor breaks. Not like you’ll notice, because the light on the dashboard that glows green when there’s a problem with the sensors will also be broken. But it's not like you’ll care, because the cars ability to tell its left from its right will also have taken a vacation, causing your lucky self to be driven straight off a mountain pass to your briefly thrilling but ultimately painful doom. Nobody at the manufacturer will know what caused this weird phenomena, and your death will be written off as a ‘software glitch, ain’t that just weird ahahaha.’ No thank you, I’ll walk. More technology: ‘Volvo cars get advanced kangaroo avoidance tech in Australia’ – it’s called drivers with a working set of eyes, hands, and feet. Politics: ‘Malcolm Turnbull’s (Australia’s current Prime Minister) visit to Indonesia could reset our relationship with our sometimes-beloved cousins to the North.’ What blessed voodoo is this? The ability to reset relationships at will? How can I get my roguish, rugged hands on whatever it is he's obtained? Just last week he was busy flaunting his newfound powers when he ‘reset the Government’s relationship with science.’ It's just freakish. And convenient. And enviable. Mostly enviable. Because I’m sure most people have an ex-partner they’d wish to reset their relationship with... after they cocked up badly like so: Social Issues: 'An all-female, Russian astronaut crew was asked (by journalists) how they’d cope without makeup and men.' One of the astronauts (or cosmonauts) replied 'we are doing work, when you’re doing work you don’t think about men and women’. At this point every man listening scoffed and choked. Why? Well, take a look at the dude opposite you, the one enjoying a burger and some fries. Is he thinking about how delicious all that fried oil is, and how he's going to die young and full of regret? Of course not, he's thinking about sex. The guy who’s on his cell, in the cinema, arguing with the tax office while having shoes thrown at him, well he’s thinking about sex too. A man could be in the middle of the Arctic, during the worst blizzard of the century, being threatened by a man wielding a machete and with 3 Timberwolves snarling at his feet and he would still be thinking about sex. This idea of thinking about 'work' when doing 'work' is alien, and foreign, and clearly too radical to take off. Sometimes I weep for real journalism Health: A recent study produced this headline: 'Why do 55% of women report a lack of interest in sex?' Because of their partner’s appearance. Too easy. Next. World news: ‘US releases plan for solar flares and space weather disaster’ - Aims to launch the first of many strongly worded letters into space early next year. That will show them the US is not to be trifled with. Entertainment: 'Fifty Shades Darker’ release date delayed?' Are you heartbroken? I know I am… Feel Good: And we end on a happy note. ‘A 97 year old woman who was forced to leave high school 8 decades ago when her mother fell ill, broke down in tears this week as she was presented with an honorary diploma from her alma mater.’ A wonderful moment for someone who sacrificed selflessly for her whole life. Now, don't we all feel so much more informed?5 points -

Not impressed with SP tbh, despite my initial hopes for them. I personally don't care about cencorship, or images being cropped - the cropping can't be helped if you want a 16:9 ratio without it being a blurry, squished mess. (though that's coming from someone with zero expereince with art assets, anyway) But their general attitude has really started to suck, and I think a lot of people are starting to get burnt out from the whole kickstarter thing. Love how they automatically called it promoting piracy - god forbid the rare case someone might actually own a legit japanese copy.3 points -
Muv Luv: A Pretty Sweet Visual Novel Series Kickstarter [MILLION DOLLAR BABY]
Darklord Rooke and 2 others reacted to Beato for a topic
Uh, what's wrong with the current Muv Luv translation? I saw nothing wrong with it, it wasn't Mirror Moon level perhaps, but it was above average for a fan translation. I haven't read Muv-Luv in Japanese but Ixrec simply isn't a very good translator. His translations are overly stiff and full of bad writing and weird phrasing. Muv-Luv isn't exactly known for its beautiful prose so it probably doesn't suffer as much in that regard as for example his translations of Comyu, Inganock or Rewrite but bad prose isn't the only issue with his work. It is often overly literal which gives me the impression that he doesn't know Japanese very well (at least not well enough to be translating), a lot of his translations basically seem like he looked up the words or kanji in a dictionary and just inserted the first definition that appeared. Like he apparently translated 紐 as shoestring in Rewrite for example which is an incredibly amateurish mistake. A lot of people have impressions like "Ixrec's translations might be a bit stiff but otherwise they're correct" or something like that but this isn't true. When he translated Muv-Luv there wasn't a lot criticism as the state of VN translations back then were pretty bad in general. If you've look up stuff from Rewrite and Comyu though which he did later you'll find tons of tons of examples that are just flat out wrong. Some examples from Rewrite: All of these are wrong. They're not just badly phrased. They are wrong. Yet without seeing the Japanese you wouldn't know as they all make sense and are grammatically correct. The first two sentences are also incredibly easy, they're on the level that someone like me who has known enough Japanese to be able to read VNs in less than a year could translate them correctly. And if his Rewrite translation is full of mistakes like these that certainly doesn't imply good things about his earlier muv-luv translation. He has also said that he doesn't think the prose matters and that the only thing that makes a visual novel well written is the plot and the twists and whatever, which really isn't encouraging to hear from someone who constantly picks works that are renowned for their prose to translate. If you've read some of his reviews he pretty much only cares about most works at a very superficial level which is a fine way to approach something as a reader (though you're definitly missing out) but completely unacceptable for a translator. If you have no affection for language you really don't have any business translating anything other than stuff like manuals. And yeah MLA's translation might be above avergae for a fan translation but that says more about the state of fan translations than anything else. While MLA isn't my favourite or anything it is one of the most well-regarded and influential VNs of all time it absolutely deserves the best translation possible. But what I'm really worried about isn't even the translation for the main trilogy but the side stories. The muv-luv team has stated several times that they are going to work with Alternative Projects on the side stories. From what I've seen their translations are so beyond the pale that they make Ixrec's look good. Their works include wonderful translations like: Some people from Alternative Projects have said that they have improved and if that's true I'm glad though I still have my doubts that their current level is anywhere near professional quality. But the problems in their earlier translations certainly can't be fixed with editing or proofreading, it needs a complete re-translation and that Degica doesn't seem to intend to do that is very worrying.3 points -

I hated this story. The beginning was already really sketchy, I mean, we get introduced to three characters in two paragraphs and one of them (the cashier at the drug store) doesn't even make a second appearance in the story. Hello author, ever heard about chekhov's gunman? Next, our incredibly badly paced "romance" jumps into an H-scene, which goes on for way too long and annoys the audience by switching locations every other paragraph. And in the end, we the audience, are left just as blueballed as the protagonist. A minor saving grace would be the comedic element, but all in all it was too short and bad to leave an impression on me. Did the author just make a first draft and decided to go with it? I mean, what the fuck happend? Overall score: Pros: + The comedy parts were really good, like when the dogs came into play. + The protagonist is a likeable and relatable character. I mean, he has sex and a ton of weeb shit, that's everyone's dream, right? Cons: - Too short - Awkward pacing (the scene jumps happend to sudden and there is no real ending). - Tone issues (we go from self depriving "mimimi, I can't get laid" to comedy and porn, pick your tone ffs). - The utter lack of voice acting and music. I mean, am I supposed to hum baby got back while reading this? - Plot holes: We never get to know why the mother can't see the protagonist and his ex hanging out in a hot tub at 3:00 AM in the garden. Her motivations aren't explained at all. 3/103 points -

Lmao what the hell!? They deleted his thread too! Free speech and criticism isn't a thing anymore, didn't you hear? Yeah! 1984! Fahrenheit 451! Other books with numbers in them! This is the way business works, guys and gals. It's not always pretty, but it's how the sausage gets made. It's a combination of SP being unable to talk about certain things because of contractual/legal obligations PLUS them not wanting to embarrass their partners and thereby endanger future projects. I've done several ad campaigns for game releases involving Japanese developers and/or Japanese IPs. I've lived it. There are layers after layers after layers of red tape to go through before you're allowed to say just about anything. (And for the record, I'm not a fan of cropping CGs either.)2 points -

From a PR perspective they handled this in the worse way they possibly could have. Also, to be honest I gave up on Sekai Project already, no company should rely fully on KickStarter for EVERYTHING they do. Fuwans, How Do You Bond With Your Siblings?

A little "update" after a couple weeks. I really appreciate everyone who's dropped by this thrad and left their opinions and experiences. It's quite surprising how many different relationships you can with your siblings and I learned quite a bit from all this. (Mainly that there's no one single way to properly deal with your sister) After making this thread, I've become a little more proactive in talking to my sister, although we don't make much small talk yet. I mostly tend to listen to whatever she has to say, but I do try to talk back rather than just walking away now. I've begun helping her with her homework more frequently and actually staying with her in the room rather than just answering her when she has a question and leaving. This also led me to learn I suck at 5th grade math problems, but on that end both me and my sister could relate. Not much has happened since, but we are going to the movies this Sunday and, as some already suggested, this should be the easier way to get along without an excessive amount of interaction, so I'm looking forward to it. Not sure if anyone would be interested but I figured, as the one who made the thread, I'd let you know I did try to do something about the whole situation and things are going okay~2 points -

In a bid to improve my navigational e><perience on this forum, 'surfing' I believe is the modern term, I sought to remove the large, blocky announcement atop the boards proper. See I had already read it, and it was rectangular and coloured (when viewed through my awesome theme) a deep blue, which thoroughly ruined the aesthetics. So, following your friendly advice I gently pressed the '><' button with the e><pectation that this eyesore would immediately vanish from my field of view. Nothing happened. I pressed it once more, and again nothing happened. What was this trickery I had succumbed to? I did not know, but whoever was behind this ruse didn't know who they were dealing with - I know how to deal with such situations. Force. It is, after all, the go-to solution for all tricky problems. And so I began to hammer on the button using my forefinger with formidable gusto and strength, and when that didn't work I used my fist, and when that didn't work a hammer and after all this it still remained; still blue, still large, still... blobby. Sitting there at the top of the forum mocking my efforts. Alas, I can no longer follow your suggestion, for I seemed to have driven an... object through the '><' button on my keyboard and it has sustained, erm, damage in the process of being... destroyed. You will note my '><'es no longer contain an '><' at all, and I have been reduced to dreaded leetspeak to appro><imate the letter in question. The agony of being limited only to 25 letters of the alphabet cannot be e><pressed in words. Pity me, for my troubles are great. Yours in suffering, Rooke. ....... PS: A good natured and guffaw happy friend has alerted me to my error. I have reread your above announcement and my blunder is now clear. Ah, yes, 'click with the mouse,' I now see where I went wrong. Please ignore all of the above PPS: I mean it, pretend it never happened2 points -

Is it really that much of a wonder if this is how 90%+ of VN companies will operate? You hear about it less with MG because the friction they encounter with their partners is much less public. JAST, though, has been full of woes dealing with 0verflow/Klon and the speed at which they've been addressing Shiny Days issues, and it's well known how much trouble they had with Nitro+ when that relationship was new. Visual Novel companies aren't very friendly, period. Or perhaps more accurately, they tend to be very difficult to work with. It is getting to the point that I wonder what reason is there for western VN audiences to stay away from eroge download and torrents, well at the very least the MuvLuv campaign seems to be handled well enough by all sides...... although I probably just jinxed something.1 point -
Yep, AkabeiSoft are the ones handling all the development of their new HD PC version and they're in control of what gets cropped and what doesn't. When it comes to these official releases, people tend to forget that the original developers still exist and usually hold more control over what happens when publishing their games. Totally agreed. The early overreaction was not the best thing they've done all day. The funny thing is, though, sometimes you don't even know if you're allowed to say anything about not being allowed to say anything. Which is about the most frustrating thing ever.1 point

I agree with mostly everything you said, business is business. But at the same time as I said before the way the PR handled it was atrocious, instead of deleting posts and banning members they should have explained they couldn't talk about it earlier.1 point

Same here man. I'm about ready to abandon western localization as a whole and start importing. It's good motivation to learn Japanese and ultimately far more rewarding. There's so much we are missing out on here in the west, and I really wanted to share the emotions and experiences Visual Novels bring with as many people as possible. I didn't support official releases to see them butchered like this.1 point

This would be an immense waste of time. Maybe, but honestly getting Ixrec's translation up to good quality would take a long time too. You'd need to run a thorough translation check on everything, then have a highly skilled editor look over the whole thing. Nobody really knows what Degica is doing with it because they've only given us vague statements, but it appears they're having a bunch of people work on it like Clannad was, so that's not very reassuring.1 point

Clephas' VN of the month
Darklord Rooke reacted to Clephas for a topic
For those who didn't see it already, here are my posts on Kenseiki Alpha Ride. Unfortunately, it doesn't meet my conditions to be VN of the Month, even if nothing better comes out, but I'm sure someone out there will like it. Unfortunately, because the update of the forums and blogs eliminated the tags system, I can't make convenient links to cover entire sections of my blog like I could before, so I have to link it post by post, lol.1 point -

The fun in grinding

Saying "it's no fun, but totally worth it" remains the exact kind of giving the devs consent to continue, what they've been getting away with for the past 15 years or so. You know there's something wrong with a game, when it turns into a second job; it's something that shouldn't even happen, but exactly what modern mmorpg devs want, because it turns in profit, especially in terms of f2p business models. It's not really even a matter, whether f2p is better than p2p (protip: it isn't; it's just better suited for modern industry business), but a matter of market oversaturation and incredible competition, which forces devs to support their games rather via cash shops, than subscription fees they can't even fully rely on; it's because subscription based gaming requires a lot bigger commitment (both financial and psychological), while cash shops often sell instant gratification most players long for so much. It's that "no hands tied, no responsibility taken" business, that made mmorpg's go down the drain and created the modern market.1 point -
Refresh my memory, what bullshit are they exactly bringing to the West? After the hard earned work from the fan translations, this rip-offs step in to take the helm. How about taking on the big dog and translating Schwarzesmarken (https://vndb.org/v14910) to the west? OH YEAH. It's not translated by the fans yet. What a waste ... and how dull can people get for backing those rip-offs.1 point

So after playing around and reforming my knowledge of 3d modeling after 3 years, I finally had an enlightening moment. I was playing around attempting to make a spherical clockwork toy. This is fairly difficult to plan out for in 3d space. Getting everything to look nice and work together is somewhat challenging. Dealing with 20+ circles in a myriad of orientations and just as many cones and making them all rotate in concert is quite frankly mind bogglingly hard. Then after walking away and reading on my phone in bed, I came to a simplifying solution. I can treat my toy as spherical coordinates instead of Cartesian ones. Then I can translate those spherical coordinates into Cartesian ones. Now instead of dealing with rotated circles, I'm dealing with a grid work of lines. Confession: Math is seriously fun sometimes.1 point -
