  1. As you have seen from my other thread, I wished to push the boundaries of Visual Novels specifically to get new people that have never touched a VN their entire lives into the genre. The group I am targeting is Comic/Graphic Novel readers in america. Especially those of minority backgrounds. The question though, is does this art style ALONE alienate veteran readers of Visual Novels? Here are two videos. The purpose of this test was to judge the voice over work. Special effects, animations, and optimized UI is expected over the next 2 weeks. Amesemi (Ami-semee) Pantheon: Kushite Age: 18 Height: 5’4” Fighting Style: Elemental Magic Alignment: True Good FANTASY Amesemi is the only female raised by Nun. She had a rare affinity for what we would understand to be magic and because of this, Nun took her as her personal apprentice. Mastering the arts of energy manipulation, she quickly discovered her ability to manipulate the elements to both devastating and beneficial effects. On top of her amazing ability to understand “magic,” she also has a superior grasp on ancient texts and lore. Of all the others, she is the most knowledgeable about the ancient bloodlines. HISTORY Amesemi is of the Kushite pantheon as a protector goddess and has close ties to Apedemak. Little is known about her role in tradition but she was worshipped for her ability to help Apedemak’s control his warrior spirit. Amesemi’s history was lost in time but there are many influences of her origin in many female Kemetic goddesses. THEORY With plenty of room to create our own origin, we decided to make her the guardian of knowledge and wielder of the rarest of arts. Apedemak is infatuated with her and Ra looks at her with suspicion. Amesemi is a strong woman wiser than all the men in the series but her confidence is limited and she looks to the men for guidance in times of danger. Who will win the heart of Amesemi?

  3. Generally speaking, anime characters have become less detailed over the past few decades. In the 80s the art it was pretty good, these days not so much. Aspiring to make art like the Japanese do therefore doesn't make sense to me. Your art is fine, and I really don't care if it alienates veteran fans of TL'd VNs or not.

  4. I've decided at last what anime plot device annoys me more than anything ever conceived. Since I'm a huge romantic comedy/drama fan, the most annoying plot device of all time is the character, be it hero, heroine or side-kick, that mumbles under their breath something that amounts to a love confession that the other person doesn't hear and when asked about it says 何でもない "Don't worry about it" or, "no, it's nothing"... and then 450 thousand episodes later still is unable to actually convey said emotion. Anyone else want to describe their pet peeves in anime?

  8. My biggest annoyance with OELVN creators is that too many try to imitate JVNs and come across hollow and pointless because of it. So, kudos to you for trying something different and aiming to bring in a new audience.

  9. I think its an excellent idea that you go after people that are more interested in the western comic market, especially because just the mention of english visual novels in the otaku community is tainted beyond belief because of false promises, lousy copy cats and mediocre to bad scripts. I dont think it does, to see a style like this with good art for once actually makes me more interested in it.

  13. Well for starters, Welcome to my thread, it's your generic thread created by generic user to introduce himself to the forum that's all for starters. And onto the main purpose of this thread............... ...... ..... .... ... .. . I really don't know what to write here, it seems I already write all I want on the top By the way, I like nearly all genre of anime/VN/Games/Music except the kind of extreme genre, and last.. Nice to meet you all, I hope we can work together in the future..

  17. I didn't say it wasn't reasonable, just debatable Yeah, the 'And One More Project to be Potentially announced soon' section is a pretty big give away. Then you look back up and start noticing all the little things. The bolded bit is not able to be determined by the actual update. Also, anything a company releases in its actual name reflects upon the company itself. Something signed by 'The Muv Luv' team reflects upon 'The Muv Luv' team. Anything a PR person writes for the company reflects upon that company, especially if it's an official update *shrugs*. I don't think it's a major concern, not to me anyway, but it's probably a tad unprofessional I suppose.

  20. You've made a few similar threads recently, and the best, all-encompassing, advice I can give you is: just make what you want to make, dude. An indie visual novel isn't going to make you a millionaire, probably not even a living, so just make something that you can love and be proud of. That's the best pay-off you're going to get from doing this. Once you've done that, making money is a bonus. Also you're not going to win any friends by saying: "Look how different and better I am than other OELVNs". It's really dismissive of other people's hard work and, contrary to ignorant popular belief, OELVNs are most assuredly not just a bunch of copy paste high school games. The shovelware shite on steam ≠ the sole representative of the OELVN scene.

  22. I know I told you to RP that character, but that's kinda cringey... Well, all is nice so long as you have fun, I guess. Lesse... I actually don't play moege. If you don't mind gameplay, go play Littlewitch Romanesque or Kamidori or something like that.

  23. Everything I want to say has already been mentioned and most of my suggestions/comments are in that one thread of yours but just want to say: Have fun doing this because some developers lose sight of just enjoying what they really love doing and they are so focused on just making a quick buck and releasing incomplete products ASAP that the whole quality of the game suffers because of it.

  24. I must be honest with you guys. When I post update in Lemmasoft, I never ever get responses lol. I am kind of relying on you guys to break the ice for me when the time comes. The fuwa audience tends to be more open minded and definitely more attentive to the little guys. Though I have gotten criticism in the past, everything has helped me redefine my game. Those who have followed my project from back in the day know how the game has completely been changed. They can attest to the structural changes I have made due to critiques and objective opinions.

  26. The knowledge that it's an OELVN is what alienates me the most, so unless I hear a LOT of good things about it I won't even touch it. The art style itself isn't such a big deal, plus it doesn't look bad going by the pic.

  27. I wrote that because I just don't know about any game with KS origins that's worth it. Development tends to be a mess, you have to worry about the goals and rewards, and there are even cases of people flogging their game and then disappearing with the money. But we live in an age wherein even AAA titles can suck big time. Not the highest peak for videogames, at least in quality, luckily we have some staunch studios that keep the flame alive. If anything I feel that KS is a controversial way of funding your project. For me it has been a fad, where the laziest people tried to fund even their musical album, just because it was popular at the moment.

  28. I look forward to the inevitable bright future where all of these works have been fully translated and officially released into English. I personally want for either Akagoei, Dies Irae, Sakuuta (of course, Sca-ji is my favorite eroge writer FOR PERSONAL REASONS BTW), or a retranslation of Cross+Channel (because it really needs one) to win this, so I voted primarily for those with my utmost spirit. But seriously Akagoei is the greatest masterpiece of our time, I wholeheartedly desire for it to win this tournament. KAITO'S FORCE could have it.

I wouldnt really recommend you to go for R07 material as your first at least lol. Not because hes writing is that hard to understand, he just does a lot to confuse you, like switching perspective without telling you and overall getting you really confused. Compaired to maggot baits where you just essentially have a lot of somewhat obscure vocab, iwaihime just completely fucks with you because of the perspectives and even more so in iwaihime because it has elements thats just pure acid lol. Go with cocoro@function as your first, im pretty sure thats an OK idea at least.

  33. I want Saihate no Ima more than the others. It's from the writer for Cross Channel (and Rewrite), and I'd like a romance/friendship story that isn't so straightforward, because I've been reading lots of straightforward drivel lately. I like the straightforward drivel, but I need something good to spice things up.

  34. Welcome to visual novels and to the forums, Jim! You definitely picked up some good ones there; the only one you listed that I haven't at least heard great things about is Sound of Drop (and I've actually not heard of it at all before, to tell the truth...), and I can personally recommend G-Senjou, Eden*, and Planetarian. The latter two are on the short side and are "kinetic novels" (meaning they have no choices and only one route), whereas G-Senjou is another long VN with several major routes, each with both good and bad ends. Eden* and Planetarian are also going to be thematically pretty similar - both are considered "nakige", or "crying games", and both have a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting. The place where the two diverge a lot is going to be the characters and the execution. On the other hand, G-Senjou is... kind of its own thing. It's got your typical overused modern, Japanese high school setting, but the setting quickly fades in the face of an amazing plot. Anyway, you probably can't go wrong with any of the ones you have (except possibly Sound of Drop). Aside from Steam, you should know that there are a couple of other places to buy officially-licensed English-translated visual novels: - MangaGamer (who was actually the licensor for Eden*, and releases their 18+ games through their own website) probably has the largest catalog. That catalog is unfortunately largely "nukige" (read: porn, usually without much of a plot), but there are a number of gems in there, such as: "ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two", a longer and darker game by minori, the company that made Eden*; the "Cartagra" / "Kara no Shoujo" series; "Gahkthun of the Golden Lightning"; and a number of others that I'm probably unfairly leaving out. - JAST USA, which most notably has Steins;Gate (and, like MangaGamer, unfortunately also a ton of nukige...). Sekai Project is the other reasonably-sized licensor, but all their All Ages releases (like Grisaia, Clannad, and G-Senjou) are using Steam for distribution. If it's of interest to you, there are also often uncensored 18+ releases of their games (including Grisaia) through their sister company Denpasoft. And aside from that, you can always go with the (admittedly somewhat legally gray...) import + apply fan translation option; for Fate/Stay Night, which you mentioned, that'd be the only option. If you're interested in more details there (it's a longer story), probably best to start another thread or just PM me to avoid hijacking this thread further... Lastly, it can be a bit overwhelming at first, but try poking around vndb.org a bit - a quick way to find whether you're on to something interesting is to look up a game you're considering there and check out its ratings, themes, etc. But the Recommendations forum on Fuwanovel is pretty responsive, and of course experienced people are usually a better resource than mere votes; don't hesitate to ask.

  35. I'm working my way through Grisaia no kaijutsu, it's my first visual novel. I fell in love with Steinz;Gate and Fate.Zero when watching them as Anime and I wanted more! I researched them both, discovering they were both originally Visual Novels, but that, disastrously... neither was on Steam! (very sad times). I flicked through the other VN's available on Steam and decided to purchase Grisaia, G-Senjou, Fault 1 & 2, Sound of Drop, Eden* and Planetarian. - Do people believe these will be good choices for a beginner? What should I go with after I finish Grisaia? I'm a ways now into what I think is still the common route in Grisaia (I just met JB outside the school) and I'm finding it absolutely fantastic. Coming from a bit of a Fansub group background, What surprised me greatly was the quality of the translation, and how the jokes were just so damn funny. This is some of the funniest stuff I've heard in my life. Let alone read! I can't believe it was written in JP! So far I'm finding all of the characters interesting, but when it comes time to choose I have been advised on going through them like this: Irisu > Amane > Sachi > Michiru > Yumiko. Thoughts on that order? Any advice on how to do it differently and why? I like Amane (sexy! confident! hilarious!) and Michiru (best. character. idea. ever.) the most. Sachi and Yumiko seem pretty great too. Though I'm finding the romance angle with Irisu to be a bit ... dodgey. I understand that's probably cultural. I've never been a lolicon. I never really believed you could have such complex, compelling characters outside of a very well written novel. I've certainly never seen them in any other medium. Whether that be a critically acclaimed show like The Wire, or a great game like Bauldurs Gate. Even when characters are on that level, they never get enough screen time to make an impact, or their story is simply too spread out, to drip fed for the reader to keep it all together. Maybe they come across amazing on a Wiki article, but not in practice. It seems to me that Grisaia is striking just the right balance. And whether it's Sachi tracking your eye movements to pre-empt your needs (hinting at a dangerously subservient upbringing) or Amane feeling all too comfortable with using her body as a 'resource'. The idea that you get to pick the one your most interested in and learn more about them, seems pretty revelatory to me. Even books don't have that!

  38. To be honest, it is really hard to comment on this series of sequels/fandiscs... S For better or worse, S really is a sequel, starting from just before the events in the true route of the original. It adds a massive number of characters (seriously, the number added is ridiculous), extended after-stories for the original game, a what-if scenario for Yuki, and five new heroine paths... unfortunately, those heroine paths are hit and miss. I'm going to say it outright... Tsubame's path was boring. Oh, there were some good fights, but I honestly never got to like her as a character, so there was no sense of tension in any of what happened for me. I really could have done without this path existing at all. Monshiro's path, on the other hand... is first-class (as long as you are a lolicon or don't watch the h-scenes - which I didn't). Combined with the complete after-story in A, it is one of my favorite paths. Part of that is because Yamato grows more in this path and its related Majikoi A paths than he does on any of the others, and the other part is because it is just all-around the best constructed of the heroine paths. Tatsuko's 'path' is basically just an after-story for the true path of the original where you choose the Itagaki sisters. There isn't much there but h-scenes and ichaicha, so it is hard to comment on it. Kokoro's path is... less than memorable. Honestly, it felt like they didn't put much effort into it at all. Margrit's path is pretty good, if you like the side of himself that Yamato showed in Chris's path. If you hated it, you'll hate this path. A First, I'll say that all but one of my favorite paths from 1-4 are Kuki-related (split-offs from Monshiro's path). Asumi, Stacey, and Ri all get paths in this one, and I liked all of them, though Asumi's was the best of the three. I also liked the Monshiro after story, Rin's story, and Homura's story. Each one is about equivalent in length and content to a full heroine route in the original Majikoi, so there is no reason to complain about the amount or depth of content. Seiso's and Benkei's paths were good, but not as interesting as the paths above. Other than that... there isn't much to say. I didn't really like Yukie's sister's path (mostly because I hate the 'pretend lovers' trope like the plague). One thing I noticed is that, throughout Majikoi A, they were setting up for a potential fourth Majikoi game... and I honestly don't know how I feel about them wanting to continue to milk this series and cast of characters.

  39. Oh I got another one. Childhood promises where the protagonist forgets the girl he made a promise with. Or just general "there was this girl in the past I can't remember despite them being super important to me". I know a child's memory is vague, but things like this used as plot devices and plot armor really ruin a story. coughNisekoicough
