I remember the not-insane guy from the documentary about The Pirate Bay talking about why he rather used AFK in place of IRL when denoting anything he did which was not in front of his computer. Recalling the exact quote proves difficult but it doesn't matter as my point isn't necessarily what he meant but how I perceived it. I seem to recall his reasoning being something along the lines of online and digital presence also, technically, being part of real life. It makes sense to me that reality is not exclusive but in fact the opposite; inclusive. Anything that can be at all I would consider part of reality and thus also, if I am involved in it, a part of my own real life. Which leads me to virtual reality. Not VR but the idea of virtuality. As far as I know, European philosophers back in the day (and maybe even now?) sometimes divided reality into the material reality (is actual, has form) and virtuality. Keep in mind that I'm using the term very liberally. Something virtual can be a thing, such as a character in a visual novel, which is not material but according to some people very much real since it obviously exists. If the character did not exist, there would be no way to see or interact with it, even through the UI of the game. There may be moral values connected to the importance of something virtual vs. something material but that is another discussion. However, I don't really buy the fact that distinctions between forms of realities are necessary nor representative of the way it works. This is why I'm just going to say that everything is real, real to the extent that we don't even need the word real as nothing can not be real. Truth be told, I am making a conscious effort not to get trapped in a spiral of semantics, arguing the duality of language, thoughts and symbols such as the word 'reality'. So, in conclusion to this paragraph, let me say that since I consider reality inclusive and non-specific, I also consider reality all-encompassing and so it includes anything that follows henceforth. Since smooth segue is smooth and If I haven't already lost everyone at this point, what I wanted to get to was this: animu and vidya are for realz! In fact, it makes me very satisfied that I can fool myself into believing the equal reality of MMORPG worlds enjoy compared to the one my shrink wants me to be functional in. Ever since I was a wee lad I have enjoyed escapism a lot. Like many of my generation I was at a point completely absorbed in the World of Warcraft, Azeroth. Because, while I love the worlds of my favourite movies, anime, fighting games, visual novels and so on, they are a bit lacking in the world department. With world I mean a traversable landscape which preferably differs enough from Earth to make it interesting. So, for me, what an MMORPG needs to be is a system which makes an as large of a virtual landscape as interesting and exciting as possible, ideally to the point that you start to forget that it is not indeed virtual. My interest in these kinds of games has dwindled significantly for the past several years. I feel they have become more about being virtual landscapes supporting a gameplay system than the other way around. Specifically I'm talking about convenience features which make the gameplay systems quicker and easier to understand. I didn't get into them for that, though. There are plenty of games I enjoy primarily for their gameplay features, such as Street Fighter and Starcraft, but none of them are MMORPGs. Recently I have regained hope, though. On March 11th this year, Visionary Realms streamed over an hour of gameplay from the pre-alpha version of their game Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen. I've been skeptical, thinking the game was most likely vapourware until I saw the stream but now, seeing how far along they've gotten, I think it will most likely see the light of day after all. Basically, the game is like any other game in the genre only stripped of what I consider bloat features. It will also be significantly slower paced and focus more on group efforts as opposed to solo play. There will be limited fast-travel, instancing and enemies which can be killed by a lone player. They are promising that there won't be exclamation marks over the heads of NPCs giving quests and combat as well as regeneration of health will take longer than in modern MMORPGs. The graphics aren't exactly state of the art but to me they look serviceable, although I'm fine with playing Dragon Quest (1986) on my Famicom so my standards aren't exactly sky high. Maybe this pitch sounds like a snorefest to you and I completely understand why someone might think so but I do hope that there are enough people interested in this kind of niche to let the game stay afloat. Perhaps you are like me and love to escape to a world of fantasy, be it in a visual novel or otherwise. Perhaps you are like me and happen to have 12-20 hours to kill in front of your computer before you sleep again. Just thought I'd put the word out there in my own construed and needy way. That's all, thanks.5 points

kingdomcome and 3 others reacted to Valmore for a topic
I checked with FuwAccounting, and it appears that I have, indeed, made the prerequisite amount of drivel posts to qualify for the 500 mark. As such, tradition dictates that this thread be borne into the world. Being an old man (rivaling @Rookefor the title of Geezer) I clearly love tradition. First off, if I don't mention you specifically, don't take it personally. I don't dislike anyone here and your non-mention is likely due to my receding memory. Or you just didn't make enough of an impression. It's almost the same. (Those are totally not the same.) Secondly, this thread is here for you to roast me, ask me questions, tease me, taunt me, etc. Anyhow... checking out the boards here has become something I look forward to daily, as you get older it gets even harder finding people in the surrounding zip codes who share your interests. The internet is great because it allows me access to you guys and gals. For that, I thank you for your continued existence. @CeruleanGamer- thanks for letting me copy/modify your posts when I was feeling unoriginal... or at the very least not killing me over the interwebs for it. @Flutterz- I believe you were the only one to actually email me when I offered way back in the day. And you continue to listen to me while about FGO gacha. I still say you should shave your head and grow a goatee. @OriginalRen- I enjoyed the couple times you live-fed the new posters and stuff you ordered. Still waiting on the poster I bought from you. Not mad. @Kaguya- Hey, you put up with me being an idiot, so you should at least get mentioned. @Jade,@Rose, @Maxel, @Mugi- The FGO thread crew that deal with me the most besides Flutterz. @12kami- who would keep my silliness alive. There's a lot more... I'll make a part two later. Or inquire inside. Anyways, thanks for helping me get through the day.4 points -
The fair fight you call for isn't gonna happen because in order to be fair both versions would need to have an equal amount of marketing, and AA versions go to Steam so they have an overwhelming advantage. The reason why AO versions have modest sales at best is because information about them only circulates within certain communities that, in total, amounts to a vanishingly small pool of buyers compared with the Steam market and the gaming market at large. The only ways to get out of that slowly expanding but still fairly small group is to either go to Steam, which an AO version can't do, or exist in the larger gaming press, which so far has superbly ignored visual novels, especially AO ones. What Mangagamer shows though, is that it's very possible to make profit out of AO titles that only sell to a niche audience. Mangagamer doesn't sell a lot but sells at a decently high price and enough to keep running, whereas Steam dictates a race to the ever-smaller prices which completely deregulates normal price practices and perceptions and probably endanger those who can't hope to sell billions of copies even at a small price. In other words Sekai Project should probably be able to make some profit out of AO versions. Whether they want to or not is up to their strategic choices. But it's not comparable with selling AA versions anyway, the market's fundamentally different.4 points

I actually think "romance" is an essential part of Higurashi. And I don't think it's strange that nearly every Visual Novel has some romance in it. After all, they are stories about humans and humans seldom work without emotions like affection for each other.3 points

Mr. Poltroon's Celebratory Easter Guess Who Game
suikashoujo and one other reacted to Mr Poltroon for a topic
I've waited almost a year for this. Finally. I'm sure it'll be glorious. Now then. This year, I'll celebrate Easter by sharing my genuine and honest opinion of many Fuwanovel members. Mostly those I happen to remember. You can also request it yourself if I don't mention you by default. A fair warning, whilst I don't often think ill of someone, there are some I might. A thousand apologies. Besides that, I also have a little game (some of you may remember it, I tried it our last year, but due to circumstances, was unable to finish it). I've updated it a little (though most characters are still out of date), and this time I do have the solutions! If you've been pinged in this post, you're probably in there, unless you aren't. Can you find yourself? Each image represents a member (or two). Can you guess them all? GUESS WHO: Anything you say about this must be in spoilers. Many things can be seen as clues, so I'm adamant about this. Besides that, onwards to opinions. These are in a brainstorm thoughtspill format. Not coherent. Too bad. For you. OBJECTIVE OPINIONS OF FUWANOVEL PLEBS: Most of those people are in the egg. Some people in the egg aren't there. This all said, here's the solution, but be sure to at least try first. Even though some are pretty much impossible to guess. EGG SOLUTION: Now I'm off to have lunch and realise I forgot something really important. Happy Easter, people!2 points -

One Mr. Insemination, Lord of Escalator Subs or something of that nature, exhibited great progress in his undertaking of this translation (which some sources that I cannot name say went from Chinese to English), and in a spree of unlimited magnanimity, even went so far as to bestow upon us the partial patch of which you spoke. Thereafter he endeavored to translate some other routes, and, as it would appear, completed all but that of one Mr. Miu. Presumably, Mr. Insemination then came to the prompt realization that Mr. Miu does, in fact, hold fascist inclinations, and thus decided that it would act against the interest of his people to disseminate this particular aspect of the production. However, the other routes remained complete according to the progress page, and after a period of prolonged unrest, he announced that these would be made available to the public on one Mr. April 1st of 2016, in the year of our one Mr. Lord Jesus. Thus, it would seem that you have only a few days to wait to see whether the truth of his proclamation shall manifest itself.2 points

That doesn't add up, you got an order of magnitude wrong here. Most people read between 150 and 400 words per minute. 10 000 words should take you between 25 minutes and an hour. Even an unskilled reader wouldn't be much slower. To give a figure easy to picture, an average book in english would have around 400 words per pages (around 40 lines with an average of 10 words per lines). That of course varies a lot depending on font, language, format, etc but let's settle with 400, 10 000 words make a 25 page "book". The 40 000 words limit Rooke mentioned would make 100 pages, which sounds reasonable. A 10 hour long VN is more likely to be, for the "average" reader (which is only a statistical entity, the dispersion is large), the equivalent of a 150 000 words / 375 pages novel. Visual novels are REALLY long. Of course the comparison is not very good, because I'm using a lot of averages and assumptions, the method of delivering the text is different, etc...2 points

The writing is about on par with your average fan translation. Maybe a bit better? Well, the fruitbat guys were all fan translators and not super spectacular ones at that. "Thankfully" I've grown used to this level of English. The VN actually does seem pretty interesting and this is the type of game that will fly under a lot of people's radar. There's not much fervor for doujin all-ages chuuni games. The biggest problem it will run into is that it's releasing on the same day as Tokyo Babel. Ouch.2 points -

Mr. Poltroon's Celebratory Easter Guess Who Game
Kosakyun and one other reacted to Mr Poltroon for a topic
That sounds like a great idea! In other to be completely fair I've made a list of every single member on this website and numbered them. Next, I've brought up a random number generator to decide who to get a gift for. As it turns out, my name came out! Entirely randomly and fairly. Guess I'll have to buy myself a gift them. Oh, of course I count.! I used a random number generator and I'm a person on the internet. That absolutely makes me a "random person on the internet". Ah, curse my short attention span! I didn't get to read the bolded statement before buying myself a gift. I guess it's too late now. As for those extra years, feel free to have them! I always give to the needy, and you clearly look like you need as many extra years as you can get, at this point. I won't elaborate too much, but I'm mostly referring to how Sekai, to the most part, isn't looking to cater to the Eroge Fanbase at all. They're trying to get the steam crowd, a perfectly valid target, and most of those care not for H-Scenes (and would actually be repulsed by them... probably, I don't really know). This present Fuwa loves their H-Scenes. How dare Sekai put the H-Scenes on the backburner?! How dare they make an All-Ages version for those who prefer one?! In a different topic, how dare they use kickstarter as a method to gauge interest! Those bastards who keep reinvesting their money and then making kickstarters. They must be filthy rich by now, greedy rascals. I'm exaggerating, of course. Even from my point of view I think Sekai's business decisions are not always sound, but I'm wholly against how everyone around here seems to hate on them or their kickstarters. Nobody's managed to convince me they truly are evil incarnate yet. I just think it's too easy convincing me. Every argument I get into I find myself agreeing to the other side's point of view or just saying "Well, that's subjective, so I can't really deny it.". I never get anywhere when I argue. I will keep it in mind that I should maybe think about getting into an argument sometime, although I wouldn't hold my breath. Unlike you, I don't go on the internet in scholarly pursuit of knowledge or enlightenment.2 points -

Tokyo Babel Released!

Grand news, denizens of wherever. The much respected Tokyo Babel, a novel released by renowned developers, ‘Propeller’, localised by esteemed translators, Conjueror and Gare, and to be distributed by beloved MG, can now be trialled by you, the adoring[1] public, through a free demo. Gaze in astonishment, play the trial, and pre-order (it doesn’t have to be in that order.) http://blog.mangagamer.org/2016/03/18/tokyo-babel-demo-now-available-for-download/ [1]‘Adoring’ as in ‘you’d all better be adoring cause I know voodoo and will poke every single last one of you if you aren’t’ ahahahaha ... EDIT: Was this post pushy? I don’t think it’s pushy, but some folk are saying ‘it’s too much’. 'Too much' what? Words? Enthusiasm? I dunno. They weren’t exactly very clear, so it’s not my fault if I don’t understand what they’re saying. EDIT2: And now they're groaning in what I imagine is supposed to be frustration, but what in reality sounds like a Wookie in heat. That's even more incomprehensible, and doesn't exactly clarify matters. EDIT3: Ouch!1 point -
The White World [Released]
Deep Blue reacted to aildevteam for a topic
The White World [1.0] Hey there! GENERAL: We are an Israeli team that have been working on this visual novel for more than a year. The White World was a voluntary project that people worked on in their spare time, between studying and serving the country. It was a FREE ONLINE visual novel you can play in any device and any platform with a browser of the last decade. OFFLINE VERSION is the only option now! (still browser based.) This version was voluntarily translated so if you find typos or bugs - please report to me on a private message with the content of the message shown when pressing F2. DO MIND THIS: Granted we didn't make it very Japanese but Otaku references exist to expose and reflect it's genre. This is the very first version of the VN and so it is the result of the project as it ended. So indeed some things could go better but I can promise you we did it whole heartedly and with almost zero budget (the only budget went into hosting it). Still, please look at it as a finished product with it's own level of authenticity rather then some budgeted project. It is an indie project, and the first to have done that in our country and language. Hope you enjoy =) PLAY: >OFFLINE VERSION<1 point -
Your opening post has warmed my heart. Good thing I went by to take care of some business. Anyway, I'd interact with you more, but I'm kinda going home at 1AM in the morning and waking up at 5AM to prepare to go to class. Yes, it's mostly a four hour sleep schedule on average. Again, it's because theater has started once again and it's screwing up my whole schedule. I go home everyday with the fear that I might get mugged, but I don't get mugged. Probably because I'm usually bigger than them. So yeah. Pretty much. Life got me again. I'll be a cool kid and finally finish the second Ace Attorney for you after my theater activities. Then I'll observe you as you state all the good things about Ace Attorney in a biased way. Also, you wake up at a time where I'm in the middle of college. Regarding your comments about most of it applying to Shiko, goddamnit man. I have not pegged myself to be a Shiko too. I will now reevaluate myself and think about how I should reinstate my status as a fag. Thank you for opening my eyes, Tiag. A late happy Easter to you. I do enjoy these threads.1 point

Tokyo Babel Released!
LiquidShu reacted to ChaosRaven for a topic
A visual novel isn't exactly the best medium for action, simply because of the lack of 'motion'. It's still possible, but you have to be very good at it. From the titles I played, only MuvLuv Alternate and Fate/Stay Night managed to impress me with their action scenes. The bridge fight in Fate/Hollow Ataraxia in particular was breath taking. But considering that even Ayakashibito had already too much action for my taste, I'm not really convinced that I will enjoy this. I'm therefore considering to await the overall reaction on the title first before I decide to buy it.1 point -

If my book isnt at least 200 pages long, it isnt a book. Its just a short story. Get over yourself. Dovac is calling all the people fussing about 18+ releases out, saying if you want them, show us. Just from what I hear, 18+ releases, that are not nukige, have been selling like absolute shit, not just from Denpasoft, but also from Mangagamer. The market is louder than the money it spends. I guarantee you, a steam release of a VN will sell better than the 18+ version. Because people will find another excuse, and another excuse, and another excuse to not buy the VN. As for Grisaia, with the sheer amount of meddling that Frontwing has been doing, it would not shock me to see that be a situation out of their hands, and if not, a separate release is likely due to them using two different labels for their All-ages and 18+ stuff. Unfortunate, but understandable as they want to protect the money wing of their operation, Sekai Project, from the "throwing scraps to the muh porn" crowd wing of their operation. Also, he hasn't announced the 18+ stuff. Expect to see it later in the summer. The stuff he tweeted is like, 3 days old, and con season is just getting started.1 point -

Had a quick read of the source code out of curiosity. Some tips: In ChangeLine(), the check should be newLine >= script.size(), not just >. You can do str == "literal" instead of str == std::string("literal"). For the various .txt files, why not read the file until the end instead of requiring the author to write the number of lines on the first line? Instead of having .txt files listing names of files and folders (e.g. characters), why not just scan the folders? Last but not least, why no unicode support? Also, is it really alright for you to place copyrighted artwork of a commercial game on Github?1 point

Yeah, the script commits several writing faux pas; for example, stop using "start" and just leave the verb by itself. Filler words are fine in conversation but serve only to weaken your writing and fill it with pointless information. But the game does look interesting and I'm already used to less than stellar writing in my Japanese VN translations (sadly), so I'll still give it a look.1 point -

Umineko is a weird novel, it's not bad but it's not something I enjoy, is more about resolving a mystery than anything else and while they resolve this mystery they develop the characters bit by bit (tons of characters) To put it clearly I got bored, I had to read 20 hours of something I don't care or I find extremely boring to reach what I consider the good parts that don't last longer than 1 or 2 hours at max, it is super long, it's more like a chore than something I enjoy doing, I think I'm at the end of the 3rd chapter right now. I can't fully explain it without giving you spoilers Don't get me wrong I'm not saying is bad, again, I find it boring mostly because A) I don't like mystery related stuff and B) specially when that mystery is related to supernatural stuff like magic or witches etc.1 point
