    Fuwanovel Confessions

I realized I couldn't simultaneously mock people who make the usual, boring, expected, pointlessly self-centered jokes, and laugh at the retarded imperial system units. I'm now in a state of deep choice anxiety.

  2. C'mon, even with a 200 μm error that was still not too bad when you compare it to the kind of complex background you need to use a Michelson interferometer on an emission line of Krypton 86. Shall we mention instead Mars Climate Orbiter, which crashed because someone fed it imperial units instead of metric units?

  3. Hey, I'm the translator for Angel Beats. First of all, thanks for taking interest, and going out of your way to post this on fuwanovel for me. I honestly had no idea until a mod on fuwa reached out to me via reddit mail. So, just like what I said in yesterday's update, I'm currently desperate for a hacker. You guys are talking about binaryfail, but I have no idea who that is, and if you guys could help me out, that would be extremely thankful. Also, I'm ready to accept any kind of criticism, suggestions, tips, questions, and opinions regarding this project. Again, thanks for taking interest!

  4. This papers essentially confirm what everyone already knew for ages, and now there's no hiding it. I'm actually more surprised so many journalists managed to keep this under wraps and release everything simultaneously for the world to see. Makes me have hope for real journalism. Grab your popcorns boys, the drama is about to be real.

  6. This has been a known subject in a certain VN community for a while, but I think now is the right time for this place to know about it. Here's the deal: the translator of Angel Beats TL project just posted a video showing proof of that this translation isn't a complete lie, and this has been going on for 2-2,5 moths by my rough estimate. Here's the video The translator also posted a survey on if the audience wants honorifics to be present in the translation, and about a partial patch and on what route it may be on: http://goo.gl/forms/IvT6fM4cpQ Here's the progress thus far, albeit in a little more peculiar form, but it's there nontheless: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hNQ-u36mto5xgYT_zPGikLGbu95XwrF5fx9m0KnGJac/edit#gid=0 I'll try to update this thread always when a new TL update comes around

  7. So I woke up to this announcement, apparently a lot of money from a lot of rich/famous and other influential peoples have been going through a law firm in Panama. This leak is the biggest leak yet and could come with a lot of disturbing news from all over the world. People with a lot of money tend to do tax evasion, nothing new there. But I cant help to be excited when stuff like this gets revealed http://panamapapers.sueddeutsche.de/articles/56febff0a1bb8d3c3495adf4/

  14. It's not about whether France allows 12 years old girls to watch porn or not. It's about catering to 12 years old animu fangirls who don't want to look at porn. The "12 year old girl" here is a metaphor for a very dominant type of anime fan who doesn't want to cross the border between ecchi and hentai even though he would legally be allowed to. Those people don't want. And this group was the target audience of MoeNovel.

  15. Aww hell yeah, user interface thread. First rule of UI: Shizzle's gotta be shiny TO THE MAX. Buttons gotta be shiny, background image gotta be shiny, characters in background image gotta be shiny, sound effects gotta be shiny, et cetera. Here's an example of PRIME SHININESS. They even got floating shiny animated stuff all over the place. Shiny is bae. Here's some more shiny, yo. It ain't as shiny as the first shiny, but when you open up the config and all that, there's some legit shiny in that faded background image, and buttons enter BLUE SHINY MODE when you hover your cursor over them. And we ain't even got to SHINY SOUND EFFECTS because I don't know how to make webms with those. But them sound effects gotta be high-pitched, not too long but not too short, et cetera (because I ran out of stuff to say). YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE SHINY. Actually, that's the only thing I can think of. I don't care what else you do, so long as shizzle's shiny.

  16. Travelling is nice, but I don't like doing it alone, reason being I'm lazy and prefer to sit in the comfort of my house so if I go alone I'll probably just spend the vast majority of my time indoors paying ridiculous amounts for the wifi.

  17. I love travelling. I hate moving, had my fill of that as an Air-Force kid, getting shipped around every couple of years. But travelling around is something I don't mind. Only on a colossal scale *hohoho* Prepare for much mockery and finger pointing, a good portion of which will be indecipherable cause it’ll be in cockney rhyming slang.

  18. I usually dislike plane rides, especially long ones, but I haven't had anything really too uncomfortable for a while now, also it would be interesting to listen to the events, you'v got a long time off, something funs bound to happen, during last winter break, I only went traveling for like 15 days, and a ton of stuff happened, so hopefully you have quite the eventful trip and share the stories with us.

  19. A good chuunige? The basic requirement of a good chuunige is to not be embarrassed/to not hesitate to do anything for the drama and to make the characters more interesting. This also applies to every aspect of the game... a good chuunige protag will be something of a hedge philosopher and have a slightly (or greatly) twisted perspective or one that is just out of sync with the rest of humanity. 'Normal people' make bad chuunige heroines and protagonists. There are no exceptions to this rule.

  27. Comedy scenes can be out of place if the story has a serious tone though all the game. Basically a character who is leading to a more serious personality would make it seem it pretty weird if the character starts cracking randomly an out of character joke. I'm not saying you can't have sense of humor in a game with serious plot, but it would be wise to maintain the joke close to how the character behave rather than making the scene look awkward. Also unless it is a comedy I would say avoid making the character doing weird jokes during a life to death situationm when lifes are at stake because not many would make jokes when facing death. Well it depends all of how the structure of the world and theme of the story looks like, and what you want to archieve, but like I said doing things who wouldn't make sense with how everything is build up would be awkward. (Finally take everything with a grain of . I'm just giving some feedback which might or not help at all anyway.)

  28. In Black Sands, fighting "Bosses" is truly a lengthy and complicated matter. depending on your research and preperation, you might "automatically" know how to handle a situation or have to "take a chance" and that might end up VERY BAD if you make the wrong choice... Investigation is critical in the sands. You gotta know what you are up against because the enemies are not just strong, but obscenely overpowered in some ways.

  30. Well it depends; some end up being pretty badass on their own. But generally a chant of sorts will be superior to just saying somehting then punching a dude. I feel that the attack seems more powerful if it takes a few seconds of concentration and a chant to summon it. Some exceptions would be the "normal" attacks that Setsuna uses in Tokoy Babel. Though a tad bit cringeworthy at times, they are overall pretty badass. This pretty much. It has to make sense. It shouldnt just be because you wanted your punch to sound cool

  42. I think it should be based on how "open" a characters personality is For example Capt, an extremely extroverted personality should have his mouth open Moro, an itrovereted character should have his mouth closed almost always Well, that's how I think at least, to bring their personalities out more

  47. It went really well! I was going to post last night, but, well... Anyway, I was up so late that despite not getting anywhere near enough sleep, I just now got settled in front of a computer again briefly (before, of course, heading back to the con shortly). My biggest fear was that nobody would show up, but the opposite happened: the crowd was so big that people had to be turned away at the door! So that's a little sad, but on the other hand, I had a big, interested group of people. Also, apparently they had a projector malfunction in that room and no replacement, so my slides were up on a depressingly tiny 32" TV screen. Thankfully the room wasn't that big, so people were able to read the large text of my slides (which I'm quite certain of because the whole room was laughing at both the second Steam slide and the Steins;Gate slide well before I said anything). But I think the game screenshots were probably illegible, so things like my Grisaia Somalia reference and my closing joke didn't play as well as they should have. The presentation itself went off really well - by my own lights, I did better on each topic than I did in any of my rehearsals. I must've talked at light speed, though, since I was apparently done in ~30 minutes... but whatever, people didn't seem to mind. I did the eye contact thing; it clearly worked. The Q&A section went for about 10 minutes, and revealed a pretty diverse crowd: I had a passionate otome fan who had played pretty much everything she could get her hands on and was looking for new stuff. She was mostly interested in the importing + fan TL side of things, and we had a little chat after the panel was over. I mentioned that I'd been planning to pick up Hakuoki soon, and her eyes lit up. I had another female who had a friend that was trying to get her into VNs, but only knew about JList, and she was loth to spend $80 and wait a month to play something. So, she was very happy to hear about all the more affordable options I'd laid out. I had a /r/visualnovels redditor who helped me out with a couple additional pointers about the reddit VN community, and who grilled me about my basis for believing the Grisaia translation to be better-written than the original Japanese (my answer: I can understand a lot of the original dialog, and it's clearly not as colorful as koestl's translation) I had the three people who, for the last few years, had been hosting a kind of "what are visual novels" panel at SakuraCon. I actually ran into them early at the Sekai Project line and asked why they weren't running the panel this year, and the main guy said "I forgot about the deadline. But it looks like somebody else is doing a panel, so I guess it worked out ok". That of course elicited a chuckle and a "That's me". They were quite helpful, especially in fielding some audience questions - clearly a lot more experienced than I am. I was chatting briefly before the panel with the SakuraCon volunteer who was running ops for my panel; when I mentioned I was running the only visual novel fan panel at SakuraCon, it turned out that he had no idea visual novels existed, and assumed that I was using some weird name for graphic novels. He got into it enough that he asked a question during the Q&A session too All told, the room was at capacity with 25 attendees. I had two people leave near the end (maybe they had somewhere to be at 11; still hurts a bit), but the rest of the crowd seemed really into it, sticking around all the way through the end of the Q&A, and I got a couple big rounds of applause. I walked out in company with the friend I'd brought along (who had never played more than a little bit of F/SN before deciding it wasn't for him, but who I apparently completely sold on picking up Grisaia; I really thought Comyu would be more his speed since he loves mecha...), as well as the past-year panelists and a few other random people, all of whom were chatting about ancient VN lore I knew nothing about. It was a great vibe, and I'm really happy that, even if those people didn't get anything from my presentation directly, I provided a venue for them to meet up and chat. So, yeah, it was an absolute blast, and I definitely achieved my goal of bringing knowledge to a few more people and helping the community grow a little bit.
