Which VN localization company do you prefer?
BookwormOtaku and 2 others reacted to Decay for a topic
I love the phoenix wright localization, lol. Yeah, it's wildly different. But they recognized that they couldn't maintain the spirit of the original Japanese version without making some changes, so they decided to just go hog wild with it. And they actually pulled it off rather successfully, I'd say. The game wouldn't be a fraction of popular in the US as it is now if they didn't do that.3 points -
Hoping this will encourage reviewers to use 1/5 and 5/5 ratings. I know with a 10 point scale there's always pressure to not use a 10 (or a 1) since it has that "masterpiece" stigma, but with a 5 scale you get broader categories and you're able to give a 5/5 without having to say everything is perfect. Hoping to see more 1/5 key games in the future as well!3 points

Mad that you attempted to play this game but you were put off by a few things!? Mad cuz there is not one media player which has all the neccessary functions? Mad that sub titles aren't appearing/synching properly with certain media players? Mad that theres no optimal playback forcing you to read over everything again? WELL GUESS WHAT PUNK I GOT SOMETHING FOR YOU TO KNOW! So i pretty much found a website where someone had actually explained how to play Phantom of Inferno without any major problems however its so god damn hard to find on google without spoiling yourself you would have to literally dedicate yourself to find answers (unless you stared through the same scenes over again in which case i am no masochist). So pretty much i simplifyed his guide through my own testings despite the fact that its not even complicated any who and that i am no expert with codecs and such but things just make sense when you put it together. Shout outs to Suicide Victim ... http://imaginedpoetry.blogspot.co.uk/2009/12/running-phantom-of-inferno-in-mpc.html?zx=f9b27172d18e6851 Those "Mad" sentences i put at the top are typically the common problems you will find if you try and play the game straight off the bat. MPC player allowed playback but failed to show the sub titles throughout the whole DVD. Any Power DVD software synchronises the subtitles properly but unfortunately the playback seems to be somewhat crappy and unreponsive. And because the game itself is a DVD you realistically don't want to wait trying to get another ending especially because there ARE choice texts in this game. SO WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO ABOUT IT!? We are simply going to put the two together! It's very simple. We are going to steal Power DVD codecs, add them to MPC player and BOOM! You got yourself PLAYBACK and SUB TITLES! You can use these pictures as a guideline http://imgur.com/a/sojxw Step 1 You need to install the following: MPC-HC 32-Bit Power DVD 9 MPC player must be 32-Bit and at all times when playing because Power DVD 9 is a 32-Bit program (Meaning that the codecs we are going to be using will only go through as 32-Bit Duhhh). The good news is that you don't have to pay for anything apart from the game from wherever the hell you got it. You can download both of these programs from legitimate sites which i will put below. http://www.geforce.com/games-applications/pc-applications/powerdvd_9 https://mpc-hc.org/downloads/ You can go through the installation like any other program. Just watch out for any Ads and just leave everything as default. You can even try and play the game in Power DVD 9 and see that there is no playback availability and on MPC the sub titles are not synched correctly. Power DVD 9 is a trial and that is perfectly fine as we don't even need to use it. We just need the files on our PC thats all. Step 2 We are nearly there now. On this step we need to simply place some codecs on our external filter so... Open up MPC-HC and go to VIEW > OPTIONS. Go to EXTERNAL FILTERS and select ADD FILTER. On this section locate the following and press okay. CyberLink Video/SP Decoder (PDVD9) Microsoft MPEG-2 Video Decoder MPC - MPEG-2 Video Decoder (Gabest) If you are unable to find the last two (Microsoft and MPC) then don't worry about it because on my PC i only had Cyberlink. If you do have them make sure you select it as worded above (On his guide he had those so i put here just to be safe than sorry). Do the following for each one. CyberLink Video/SP Decoder (PDVD9) - PREFER Microsoft MPEG-2 Video Decoder - BLOCK MPC - MPEG-2 Video Decoder (Gabest) - BLOCK Apply it and now open Phantom of Inferno by whatever method you are using. I have an image file of the game and i mounted it using Daemon Tools Lite. Most likely you will select FILE > OPEN DISC > PHANTOMDVD. When the DVD loads right click any space, FILTERS > CyberLink Video/SP Decoder (PDVD9). In the window look for Miscellaneous and UNCHECK DxVA. Apply it, close down your MPC player and get ready for the next section as it gets a bit more complicated from here. Step 3 Open MPC-HC and open up Phantom of Inferno. ... CONGRATULATIONS You can now play this game with synchronised sub titles and the ability to slide through the time bar and use playback settings. What you should know!? You probably won't touch the playback until you get your first ending so don't even bother fiddling around with it until then. Create favourites as a save point instead of the Password system (unless you want to play super casual). You can name them to help you get through. If you saved a favourite half way in a scene and return to it, it may go black and only audio will be present. To fix this simply remember the time it was on and roll it back to the beginning of that scene (this causes it to refresh) and now drag it back to the time you was on. Note that you can't abuse the play back because... Im not too sure why, just treat the slider gently and if you mess up just refresh the chapter by dragging it back to 00:00. This happened quite a lot to me. It gets pretty finicky on scenes that are like 20-30 minutes long so you have to be patient if you are trying to get to a certain time. If you are using MPC-HC for other media files and you feel that its causing problems to it just remove the items in the filter. Or you could just use your 64-Bit MPC-HC. I don't think this just applies to Phantom of Inferno but for any other interactive DVD game which has common problems like this. It's worth keeping hold of it! Don't you dare touch the navigation and select chapters. The favourites cover this for you if you are using them. If you end up using navigation you could potentially spoil yourself and enter another route. Mess around with the Video Frame settings to your preference. Hope this guide helped you out. I finished this yesterday and i absolutely loved it. I don't want anyone to go through the trouble of not playing the game because of media players and other bullshit. If there are any problems please let me know i will try my best and help you but as i said i'm no expert about these things. If there is someone else who could help explain things that would be great! May be editing this randomly or when i'm bored.2 points

JAST has a dedicated licensing person. I know this because I have his e-mail address. I'm sure Peter gets involved at times also. I get the impression that JAST personnel have responsibilities that overlap with J-List. Nicholas Graham appears to be the boss at JAST, and he seems like a capable sort. Tim manages some projects. He seems less experienced. I'm not sure if Makoto is still working for JAST or not. I agree that Peter seems mostly focused on J-List, and that JAST is a side project for him. JAST's new forums are now live, and JAST personnel post there. You should ask these questions to them yourself.2 points -

Social Suicide 101. But I think you might be exaggerating by claiming she doesn't want to have any sort of relationship with you. I mean, I don't know your family so I can't be sure, but it sounds to me like you just have separate interests and it's a bit harder to talk about common things now than it was before. This doesn't mean she doesn't care for you though, it's just that you have your own lives to worry about now and don't need to be on top of each other's business constantly. My mother and her brother don't talk often even though they live close to each other. Once every week they might meet or talk on the phone, but they each have their lives now, and I suspect the same could be applied to you here. My father has 2 brothers as well and one of them is our neighbour, but they still don't talk that often. Regardless, both my mother and my father love their siblings and whenever they're together they have a good time. My sister and I don't talk too much because of our separate interests as well, but I still don't hate her, and I don't think she hates me either. I would suggest, instead of trying to force the relationship, just accept that your sister has a lot of things to worry about now and it's not really your place to change that forcefully. However I would also suggest talking to her once in a while. Ask her how her day's been going, ask her if anything new happened, that sort of general questions that everyone can answer and strike a conversation with without being overbearing.2 points -

I'm going to bet it's because they sort of tapped the Steam market before anything else did. Like, sure there's now plenty of anime boobs to look at on Steam, but before Sakura Spirit came out, cheap anime fanservice games on Steam weren't plentiful (and they still kinda aren't, but there's more options at least) and that's probably why the Sakura games got such popularity early on. It was more of a novelty which, aided by the libido of 12 year olds, ended up selling like hotcakes, but if you look at the subsequent Sakura titles, each one does worse than the previous one, signaling that perhaps just having 2D boobs isn't going to hold you up for too long. Now Sakura games are basically going to turn into the Bad Rats of VNs.2 points -

The story of my life. From my experience, unless one or both of you are super emphatic and guilty about it, not much can be done; I'd say it's more or less normal in that period of life. What I can confirm, tho, is that once she graduates, things might change again. Actually, it's a given. It happened in case of my sister. We really grew apart during her university days, but once she graduated and came back with her 'boyfriend' (), things changed drastically. I'd say it's not exactly the same as it used to be, but nevertheless, we restored the bonds that once tied us together. I'm actually amazed it came so naturally, as if nothing happend to the point, it left me confused for quite a bit as how to react; luckily, her boyfriend is a super cool guy and literally became a bandaid in our relationship. I'd say, don't fret about it that much. Just be yourself and keep reminding your sis, you're still there for her. She's propably before the period, where an adult person actually comes to understand, how important and precious family bonds are.1 point

It resolves the harem, and even pairs up protag with best girl, but it does it in such an unforgivably unrealistically melodramatic way that I wanted to find the guy who made it and punch him in the face in part just to see if he actually is a robot rather than a human. So, yes, at least the harem gets resolved, but the baggage that comes along for the ride made it really not worth it, for me.1 point -

I've only seen their tls on youtube, but they seemed very stilted and poorly written to me (the good writing of Ar Tonelico games in particular is completely ruined), not to mention the mistranslated lines (weren't they the ones who gave birth to that pregnancy meme with their Disgaea translation?). Americanization is the least of their problems. If there's a game that's overlocalized, it's Phoenix Wright, but Alexander O. Smith did such an awesome job with it, one is inclined to forgive anything.1 point -

Two Years here on Fuwa, Change, Evolution and Many Thanks
kingdomcome reacted to Hanako for a topic
Well actually it's not 2 years yet but my brain is sure I created an account in February 2014 so I'll go with this false memory ^^ I'm creating this thread just to express my thanks and how important Fuwa were for me, even if I don't really post ^^" So, will procede first with a resume of this last 2 years I discovered VN toward the end of 2013, and even thought I still have the same taste, going here broaden them by several miles. Now I'm really interested in utsuge for example. x) So Fuwa, special mention to the skype group, played an important part in my growing. I litteraly grew with you guys. Objectively, Nagi-sensei is the one who has the most important part in it because he invite me into the very first group (Will probably never forget the convo we had in Lolis VS Nee-san *.*). But because of this I pretty much disapeared from the forum, which wasn't my intention xD When I came back here (roughtly 1 year after I disapeared I think) Loligeddon happened and quite the number of drama and salt and the torrent thing, but from my point of view nothing really changed, minus that some of the people I came to knew when I first arrived here vanished, much to my sadness. But nevertheless, Fuwa still managed to make me laugh enough to make my cry and hold my belly tight (yeah I'm looking at you H-scene cliche thread ) Really I spend too much time reading forum instead of reading VN Even though, I'm lurking most of the time I noticed that there is more and more french here xD. And with time passing by I feel like there is more and more people with pecular preference, which is really good if you're interested in it because they can generally answer to your expectation quite well. (just in case my thing is yuri but seems like Dergo took up on my role so for now I'll stay as a yuri ghost here, but fear not I'll evolve even further than any of the yurist here ) But on the other side, we lost some good and bad things. Sadly there is not helping, time is quite cruel for this. Now a text wall for all the main skype group that came into existance thanks to Fuwa (so the first group, FSK, FSG and FSJPG) Feel free to skip this part if it bore you like the rest of this topic xp Some time ago, I heard that those skype group actually has a bad reputation, so I'd like to correct it. I'll be blunt : we are really awful human being there xD We will most of the time shittalk about your favourite thing, but we expect you to not take it badly, you can also shittalk about our waifu, there will always be at least one person who will support you xp But we all respect what you may or may not like, and I'm sure that somewhere reaaaaally deep most of us care for the other, no homo we're all cute 2D grill after all. Sure we have a humor.... special at least, but we don't bit very often. Thought, I won't deny that there was some really retarded drama (well they always happened when I was away so I don't actually know them firsthand ^^" ) Really, if you let loose a little there it's almost always funny. I spend hours (and I really mean it) laughing non-stop at the chat. I litterally grew up with those group, like stated above. It lets my oddball charac and my sadistic side bloom by creating some meme on our member. I mean we all know that Ember (RIP in cooking now :/ ) is a girl, and that Shameful is an uncurable siscon . I like doing jab, and the skype group was the perfect place to train me on doing jab thanks to that feeling of friendship/family. But it's not all good, right now we have a lot of inside joke and meme, so much that months ago Zaka created a surviving guide, and it was completly oblsolete after 1 month xD On the other side, if you managed to catch up thing or stay there long enough, you'll probably find nice friend to share your passion with, and also more personal stuff that can't be displayed here. For example, last May, I collapsed several time, putting me in a hazy state, made me stop my study for the rest of the scholar year, and therefore couldn't pass my year, even though until then I had valided everything. Could have redone this year but, it's likely impossible with my state of mind (hate doing stuff I already did) and my health (40 hours per week is just too much for me now). Well, when I said I had to go to the hospital because of my health they ignored me (allow me this little vengence xp ). But when I tell them that I just learned that I have a lifelong uncurable sickness (not deadly in itself but may create dangerous situation) most of them were genuily worried for me. And even if it changed nearly nothing to how I face it, it felt really nice. It's probably because of them that I'm learning japanese right now (mainly because Nagi-sensei though xp) If it wasn't for them I would probably be somewhere else less happy than now. Really, those group are such an important part of my development on the last 2 years, it's almost ridiculous. So yeah, even if being weird is like a requirement to enjoy the group silliness, I don't want people to thing of the group as cancer or somewhere where there is nothing funny to do. Btw , it seems that for some time now, there is many project growing there, in the shadow like Zealty's tl of Hapymaher . Now to came back to Fuwa, I'd like to express my deepess thanks to @Tay who take up the role of Aeeru and made Fuwa stay alive. Thanks to him, I got to meet you. So, thanks a lot. Fuwa made a lot of small things, without even noticing, to help me in more than one way. I'd like to repay the community as a whole (even those I don't know yet or will maybe never know). But, as it stand now, it's impossible. But soon enough (count years xD) we will maybe pull out a lot of new people in this media we all like. Yes, yes "we" I can't really repay you here, on the forum, but I will work behind the scene on several project, which I hope you will like. So now the last thanks (even the absents ones). Note: tried to write the name in their order of appearence, but they may be off because of my fuzy memory so sorry ^^" So sensei, thanks for a lot of stuff, may your loli imouto never leave you ;p Ember, you were my first meme, and a really fun person to meddle with right Emby Green, just one thing, GREEEEEEEEEEEN!!!! Lefon, my first yuri comrade when the two main faction were Lolis and Nee-san and no one would care about yuri, and also the man who made the entire population on England disapear xD May the conspiracy stay with you. Back then, when MG was still uncool and visual novels weren't popular yet, they released an all-ages visual novel, Higurashi, even though it was pretty clear that it wouldn't be very profitable. Of course, they got hate because there were licensing issues with the soundtrack and because they didn't use the Alchemist sprites. But still, without MG, we probably wouldn't have gotten an English Higurashi release at all. Since then there was always an "All-ages" in the MG store. Also, even though they were advertising every game as a sex romp, people who actually played their games know that most of the time this was false advertising. I remember playing Edelweiß expecting a nukige because the summary very much implied it, but then I got one of the funniest love comedies I ever played. You only need to think of the gay ghosts to notice that they are still doing this, but nonetheless the games are actually not as porny as MG tries to make us believe. I don't think you can criticize MG for focusing on nukige. If you ignore all nukige in their portfolio, you still have a great list of mostly interesting games. And I think this list is possible, because they release also a few nukige (most of them actually quite good if you compare them to JAST's nukige for example) to make cash, because we all know that it's the porn that sells.1 point -
