Sekai Project fails to secure nearly finished Baldr Sky fan TL
VirginSmasher and 7 others reacted to Nandemonai for a topic
We don't know, and never will, because companies never talk about this kind of thing in public unless it goes to court. And believe me, it won't. Maybe Aroduc wanted too much money. Maybe SP are skinflints and gave an insultingly low offer. Maybe the folks over at Giga were not impressed that someone decided to work on the title without their permission, and told Sekai Project that he would not be acceptable to them. I figure the most likely explanation is Sekai Project was secretly negotiating for Baldr Sky at the same time Aroduc was secretly fan translating it. And that neither one knew what the other one was doing. So SP might have already inked a contract with another translator to work on the project. It's still fairly rotten for SP to not even straight up tell Aroduc 'sorry, we can't hire you' and subject him to the no-reply treatment. That's just straight up unprofessional. The no-reply treatment is fairly common in the world of business. If I submit my resume to a bunch of different places, I expect to not really hear back from places that have no interest. They just don't respond. I don't expect places that were actively talking to me to suddenly stop. If a company and I are talking, and they decide 'this isn't going to work out, we don't think we want to hire you after all', but they've already started talking to me, or I've already had an interview? Very bad form to simply start stonewalling. Honestly, I get the feeling that Sekai Project's troubles almost all seem to stem from the unprofessional way they seem to be handling public relations and communication. This issue was never going to make Aroduc happy (his work on a game he didn't even like is now wasted), but blowing him off is just stupid and short-sighted. What if they want to work with him in the future? Likewise, all the controversy over will-they-won't-they on whether their recent announcements will get adult releases. If you take one of their twitter comments at face value, the only reason they didn't announce the adult versions was time constraints. Okay, so why haven't they since? Why have we been left to read the tea leaves, and try to read into statements like "well this game was explicitly announced for Denpasoft and Steam, this other game was only announced for Steam". They said they'd have news to share at AX about Maitetsu uncensored; they said the reason they didn't reveal it there was they ran out of time at the panel. Then why didn't they announce it at Otacon? Or online? So either they lied, or they were telling the truth and somehow something came up. If they lied, and have no plans to make any such announcements and are simply trying to shut people up - this is terribly unprofessional, and makes them look bad, and makes people not trust them. If they were telling the truth, then they are simply incompetent at public relations, they're so bad that they can't even keep track of the things they said they'd announce, or they commit to announcing info they really intend to announce but then it turns out they can't. Either way I think SP would do well to get this under control. They're generating a LOT of ill will towards themselves unnecessarily. Even if the answers are "no adult versions of games X, Y, and Z for now, sorry, we tried" - telling the truth would hurt less than this.8 points -
Moogy, Conjueror, etc all publicly congratulated Aroduc as soon as Baldr Sky's localization was announced. Doddler was part of his team, but didn't know anything about the licensing. Furthermore, Aroduc said: So it seems obvious that they were in communication about it, and that he was working on it was an open secret within the VN industry. He likely asked around about getting it licensed at some point. And Aginyan said yesterday: Not that there was one or work had already begun. It's silly to take these at anything other than face value, especially if SP isn't denying any of it.6 points

As this thread, which should properly be titled "Making Shit Up", continues, since we now have some factual inaccuracy to go along with our baseless theorizing, I'm just jumping in here to correct the former. As you can see from their wikipedia page if you take the trouble to count, Sekai Project has published 64 games: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sekai_Project#Published_games As you can see from their Kickstarter created page, Sekai Project has created 12 Kickstarters, of which 11 were for games, not all of which are included in the above tally of 64 games because one failed and some are not completed yet, and two of which (WEE and Grisaia) are counted twice in the above since they subsumed multiple releases: https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/sekaiproject/created Carry on making shit up, but please do try to restrain yourself to wild hypotheses about companies' and people's motives and their NDA-covered contractual obligations, rather than about easily verifiable matters of fact.4 points -

Small indie dev studio with VN passion
Darklord Rooke and one other reacted to Owl studio for a topic
Hello everybody! We are small, but pretty skilled in gamedev sphere team of indie developers. We are kind of addicted to Visual Novels, so our 1st huge project is a visual novel called One Day in London. you can check it out here in this topic on Fuwa: We want as much honest feedback about our project from the real VN lovers as you can give us. Cause we want to create a really interesting thing, not just an ordinary Sh*t. But we guess every developer dreams about the same, so you are the most skilled judges in this question. Bishoujo Mangekyou TL Update 33: 50% Edited and proofreading started
mitchhamilton and one other reacted to Arcadeotic for a blog entry
Another update. Firstly, we decided to get a filler editor for ocdc, who has been really busy with his real life, and that editor is Einstein9029 like you can see from the Staff page. Anyways, there hasn't been any major editing progress, but a little bit and we have reached the halfway point of editing, which is great news. QC's been going at a steady pace too, pretty much parallel to editing. Secondly, we've begun proofreading. Now if you're wondering about the leap of progress in a single week, proofreading is just a final check and cleanup, and thus doesn't take as much as QC'ing or nearly as much as editing, so fear not. Next, I more or less have finished up the look of the website, and that pesky front page slider really did give me a headache, but it was worth it. There still is some things I want to do with the design of the website, but those can wait for a better day. Finally, you probably saw me tweeting about the new "announcement" I made. Sure enough, there's something big coming up early October, and that specific date happens to be my birthday too. Well, I can't give that many hints as of now, but I can tell some things if you want answers, just don't expect too much at this point out of me. You can check it out in here. That is all, progress time: Until next week2 points -

Project Breach [Mystery | Thriller] (Update - Website&Teaser)
Li-Fei reacted to Eastwatch Studio for a topic
When you're the only one who remembers... can you trust your own memories? You have been told not to ask questions. Working in isolation, this has never been a problem. That is until you develop an unlikely friendship with a fellow employee, who breaks protocol to talk to you. When that person then disappears without a trace, and no one but you has any memory of their existence, you are forced to search for answers. The others tell you that you must be mistaken, that you are confused, that the isolation has started to get to you. They may be right. You think you might be losing your mind. But I know more about you than you realize...and I know you'll come looking for me. Project Breach is a non-linear adventure/visual novel, currently in development for PC first. Key focus is placed on story, characters, problem solving, and making choices that matter. Project Breach features • a deep storyline with mature themes, and a thrilling mystery at its heart. • multiple plot threads, with multiple endings. • a dynamic dialogue system, with varied and optional paths and fully voiced characters. • a seamless experience, weaving story, problem solving, and cinematic moments together, without having isolated sections for each. Greetings everyone, we are Eastwatch studio. Project Breach is our first title, and is truly a passion project. Our goal is to create something with high production value, and deliver an unforgettable story. As of now we are still early stage, though much of the foundation is in place. The overall story is complete, with the first few chapters completely written. While influences are many, the Zero Escape series is a prime inspiration in terms of storytelling and utilizing the medium. In terms of the art style for Project Breach, inspiration was drawn from cg films from the mid 2000s(such as appleseed ex machina), a style you don't see much of anymore, but we love. Much effort is being put into the development of the environments, making them feel alive and atmospheric. The intent is to build things in a way that when there is a cut to cinematic, it blends seamlessly and doesn't feel disjointed. In Project Breach, you can expect a lengthy, winding thriller mystery, with rich characters and choices that directly effect the story. Thanks for checking out Project Breach, we'll have more to share soon! The official website and cg trailer are just around the corner, so please look out for that. We're very excited for everyone to see more! We invite you to come check out our facebook page for up to date developments. Also if any are interested, I'll be posting some high res shots throughout development on my personal deviantart page, MisterJL (that's me!), where you are also welcome. Gin'iro, Haruka Part 1: Common and Bethly
Freestyle80 reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
First, I'm going to say right out that this VN feels very familiar to me, as someone who dropped Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai. I dropped that game for a number of reasons... but the biggest one was that I was extremely tired of slice-of-life and romance at the time. Since Hoshi Ori (and indeed all games by Tone Works) is a pure slice-of-life/romance VN (not charage) it just was a bad time for me to hit on it. As I studied my feelings about my experiences with the path I'd played, I went ahead and rated it based on that, and I'm going to tell yall some of my impressions of Tone Works' games. Tone Works, unlike most slice-of-life companies, doesn't utilize any sort of heavy-handed moe. As a result, it definitely isn't a moege company, as most slice-of-life companies are. This is only the first - and least important- distinction. The most important distinction is the detail in which this company portrays the blooming, growth, and maturity of the relationship between the lovers. The creation of the relationship, its growth into deep love, and its mellowing and deepening into maturity in adulthood are all portrayed in this company's VNs in incredible detail... That is why their heroine paths are generally ten hour affairs (seriously) and actually much longer than the common route. This VN is no exception that way. The common route covers the first half of the central cast's middle school experience together... and that in itself covers about six hours of reading. However, from there it extends through the end of middle school, throughout high school, college, and into the characters' mid-twenties, touching upon various experiences in each era, as the characters grow and mature. To be honest, this kind of VN will probably overwhelm most people who read it with the sheer overload of information you get. By the time I'd finished Bethly's path, I'd been playing for eleven hours, just covering the growth of their relationship and path to marriage. As such, I can't really make a good comparison to give you reference points for how to understand the experience of a VN like this. In my experience, neither novels nor VNs actually cover this kind of gentle, almost real-feeling relationship growth. That is probably the reason why I had trouble with Hoshi Ori. For better or worse, the story goes so deep into the characters that it really feels like a betrayal when you pick another heroine, to the point where I actually feel like I'm cheating on Bethly for starting a new path. I didn't even realize I was becoming this emotionally invested in her, lol. It isn't quite the same as the epiphany I had when I first watched a love-comedy anime (Ai Yori Aoshi), but it is the first major epiphany I've had in some time, when it comes to fiction. While I always complain about the incomplete nature of Vn endings, I am definitely getting the feeling that I should have been careful what I wished for, lol. PS: Incidentally, I rofled hard at the scene from the pic below. http://s21.photobucket.com/user/Rihochan/media/Bethly zombie.png.html1 point -

......Interesting situation I guess? Regardless I think Aroduc's post there could also serve as some sort of indirect confirmation that he didn't involved in Baldr Sky (And machosist as well for trying translating the game with the engine that he loathed so much). What I knew for now that even if the situation was favorable for Aroduc there, there's still long way there if we talking about Baldr Sky release here (Seinarukana was took 3 years to release after Aroduc was announced that he'll translate it). PS - Looks like Overwatch was quite addictive, now that Aroduc use it as stress reliever after Original Ren here (Not that I knew about it).1 point -

Finished Kokoro's route in Remember11, ending was ?????????, I haven't gotten all of Kokoro's Bad Ends, but there was a particular one that was executed quite well imo. Kokoro's usually a 'think positive! you have to believe!' type of protagonist when the chips are down, and so it was just great to see her finally give up, curse the world, and laugh hysterically as her impending doom arrived in one particular end. Chills. Starting Satoru's route soon^tm. Very interested in what the big mystery is. And goddamn the half n' half dual narrative, now I feel the need to reread Kokoro's route while reading Satarou's since they are opposite sides of the coin1 point -

Isn't that basically humanity at the moment though? Or at least western culture since I can't comment on things that happen in other languages and cultures. Also as for the topic, while it sucks that this guy spent a bunch of time translating the game and hes not getting anything out of it, I don't see anything that SP did necessarily. Maybe they could have given him a heads up before hand to tell him they were licensing the game and weren't interested in hiring him for the translation or couldn't due to something Giga wanted or whatever the case is, but maybe they didn't know until recently? I mean I just don't see a way this is all SP's fault.1 point -
This whole situation is a fiasco of gigantic proportions. Aroduc is an experienced, fast and reliable translator with multiple gameplay VNs released officially, not to mention whatever technical work has already been done by his team - definitely the correct person to do the job. His post insinuates that SP was aware of ongoing translation beforehand and specifically calls the offer they got "grossly inadequate". Given the fact that he worked with JAST on multiple occasions I suppose he's well aware what's the payment rate in the VN industry and I highly doubt there exist some large discrepancies between different companies. I think that SP hoped for quick buyout knowing that after official announcement he'll have to drop the project but didn't expect him not to accept said "grossly inadequate" recompensation they offered. Rest is history. One way of another SP has a 4+MB long behemoth on its plate. I wonder if we'll see a return of Clannad situation - throwing all available people at it and letting other projects grind to a halt. I expect delays, lots of them.1 point

For explanation, Higanbana maybe had same bad art as Umineko and Higurashi (Well, it's Ryuukishi art after all), but if you knew how popular both of Higurashi and Umineko were, at least you could expect that it will be good (Hopefully). True Remembrance was short story about how some sort of memory deleter live (Hard to explain) with his patient. Both of those was translated of course. Hope it'll help you.1 point -

Yeah, right. Why not launch another kickstarter to pay this imaginary project team? Maybe, I'm really stupid, but tell me, why not choose Aroduc with his pretty much already done TL but instead basically tell him ''go to hell''? It's NOT the first time SP buys fan-translation. And Aroduc is not some teenager with basic knowledge of moonrunes. I don't think he is so greedy and stubborn to ignore any possible compromise. In his work he complains mostly about attitude of SP. Well, everybody does at this point. But it's Baldr Sky and that's why it's so sad...1 point -

Youtube becoming a "Safe Space"
Suzu Fanatic reacted to Down for a topic
Well, this is rather putting into the TOS and enforcing more something that existed already. Video makers have had videos de-monetized before because of their topics, such as the Israel-Palestine conflict or the genocides in Rwanda. That's the kind of content that gets booted out, not actually questionable content like people promoting sexual harassment or w/e. But that only follows the tacit rule of the media, which is to never displease the advertisers. Which IS concerning for video makers, of course. But that's just one of the consequences of having just two platforms viable for getting exposure when you're a professional video maker, both of which are run by huge privately owned companies. There's no easy solution. Making a video sharing platform involves fairly huge costs, after all, so something run by a non-profit or self-organized seems unlikely to come out in the near future (and I don't believe in the liberal bullshit that concurrency b/w private companies will make things better). The solution, which is already emerging anyway, is for video makers to find alternative ways of funding their work, such as patreon. Most people who don't make literally millions of hits on youtube make most of their money through crowdfunding already. And those who make millions of hits are already doing consensual content that pleases advertisers anyway.1 point -

Then it’s just that the business arrangement/opportunity is no longer desirable. Happens all the time in any industry. People who no longer get paid sufficiently walk away, it happens in sport, office workers, and content creators. Maybe demand will result in another platform being built. Competition is always good I'm quite surprised there's so few options out there.1 point -
