I have worked a few different ways, and I prefer spreadsheets as well. Notepad is a bit messy, especially if everyone are supposed to work in the same notepad file. It's saved offline and has to be manually uploaded to like a drive for sharing, and you can't lock the actual TL field as far as I know. Spreadsheets is a nice way to keep everything neat and simple, with a field for each person. (TL, TLC, Editor etc.) You can lock the TL field for editing so that the TL itself can't be changed by mistake. It's also stored online and auto saves. So, as long as you have the formatting down then it's a great way to work. Looking up some guides on the internet on how to do it proppely is probably a good idea. As for already existing software you can use, I don't know about anything tbh. For my Tsui Yuri project, my hacker created some tools that my team could work in, which was very helpful. Though, simply making your own isn't something everyone has the ability to do of course. (It worked very similarly to spreadsheets though, and spreadsheets are free for everyone to use online if you use something like google docs, so once again: spreadsheets are awesome.)2 points -

How old is old?
Forgetful Frank reacted to juss100 for a topic
I don’t know what the average age of visual novel fanatics is. At 38 I’m probably tilting heavily on the wrong side of it, but soldiering on with my passions regardless. I’ve been something of an anime fan for over ten years now but in the last few years I’ve been struggling to keep up with the explosion of new series and I’ve found dipping casually into past classics is just as rewarding as voraciously devouring everything. I’ve always enjoyed an eclectic range of stuff – I think –and my favourite shows have ranged from Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion and Rurouni Kenshin (that recent movie – glorious!) to Haruhi Suzamiya, Bakemonogatari, Sailor Moon and Revolutionary Girl Utena. At one point in my life I thought I’d watched quite a lot, but actually I’ve barely scratched the surface. I’ve been itching to get into Visual Novels for years but the poor availability of translations as well as the time factor put me off a bit – I had other doorstop books to read like Game of Thrones. I tried getting into Light Novels but they don’t feel any fresher than western ones. Visual Novels, however, are a different beast entirely and although I’ve so far only read a few– older ones like Eve: Burst Error and Divi-Dead - I’m fascinated by what the form can do, who there’s a need to approach the narrative differently from a written novel (again, I’ve read so many, I still love them but are less drawn to them) and the way one approaches reading them, in-between a book and a TV show, makes for a markedly different but just as rewarding experience. Anyway, because, like most people, I like writing about my experiences with new things, I’ve decided to try and read VNs a little systematically so that I can see how they’ve progressed over time and to blog my thoughts as I go along – I’m not just going to read older VNs though because that would stupidly ignore the fact that we’re probably in the golden age right now … the only more recent VN I’ve read is Planetarian which was formally and experientially much stronger than the others that I’ve read. Anyway, hi! I look forward to contributing a few thoughts and hopefully helping to bring VNs to the West.1 point -
Hi! Recently I have been creating a new world to set stories in. I am creating a series of shorter games and comics exploring this world. While I am not completely done, I feel as though your feedback would be very much welcome. I want to include you peeps in the development process. What is it? Rooted follows a town built on top of a giant creature wandering through the world. The town is mostly self sufficient - they grow crops and trees on the creature, harvest the giant fur to sew clothes and other materials, and mine the horns of the creature to create more sturdy things such as weapons and foundations. Every once in a while, the creature ceases its endless trot to slumber. For a short while, the giantfolk can visit the ground to trade and mingle before the creature wakes up. To the people living on the creature there are two worlds. The familiar and constant soft and furry world of the town set in the fur of the creature, and the ever changing, moving world of the ground. The world of the ground is always different , forever changing as the creature continues walking onwards. The creature folk are forever moving this way, but also forever rooted to the creature. Intent I want to explore how life on the creature is. To explore their world and use that in context of my own worldview to gain a better understanding of myself. Does the townfolk ever feel trapped? Do their youth run away to the unknown ground world? Does the town traditionally reproduce with people from the ground world to increase their gene pool? What does the ground world think of the creature? What if a city is trampled down, does people get angry and what do they do about it? What happens when they meet another creature with a townt? What if their giant is a predator, for example a spider? Those are some potential plotlines set in this world. For now I am still creating the world and establishing just how it works though! View from a small settlement on the edge of the giant. What do you want from me? I am involving you in the development of Rooted, if you would like to! Here is how it works; Every week or every other week, I will post a new update on the project. I will give you guys a script, a comic, a prototype or simply some artwork. In the same run, I will provide a feedback form, you will hopefully give feedback, and based on your feedback I will pivot accordingly! While I have a vision, I believe it is important to listen to your audience and iterate from there. If you’re into it, I would love to take your opinion into consideration. Okay, let me join! You can leave some feedback and sign up as a tester here - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfs_tElhyRJ2VJ0tuiVjBKdcRynAH2Zihld8DfQm_xjpVZe9Q/viewform Who are you? My name is Sebastian Larsson. I am a game design student from Sweden. I am into creating things ranging from games, to comics, to stories. Hello there. My name is Konpeki Umi, well it's my pen name to be exact. I'm a writer who loves to read books, especially light novels since I find them an interesting read. I plan to write a book myself someday. I joined Fuwanovel because I have an interest in visual novels too, and I would like to share my thoughts on them here since there's not a lot of people I know I can actually talk about them to without receiving awkward stares. While I haven't read any visual novels yet, the closest one I've played to a visual novel is Hyperdimension Neptunia. There are a couple that peaked my interest like Fate/Stay Night, If My Heart Had Wings, The Fruit of Grisaia, and the Umineko series, and I would like to read those when I can actually afford them. Hopefully you don't mind if I share my writing works on this site. I would like some feedback on my works so I can better improve on my writing skills. It would be greatly appreciated, thank you. And that's it for the introduction. I hope I get to know you all, and see you around.1 point -

The best way imo is to have the lines on a spreadsheet (i used google sheets) so you can add the translated lines (as well as the tlc and edited lines) directly next side the original ones instead of directly editing them in the script files. This requires some extra tinkering though which I have no clue how to do but luckily I wasn't the one in charge of this process. If you can't do this then I'm sorry to say there probably isn't a great way to handle the scripts other than just opening them with notepad++ and replacing the lines. I suggest having a copy of the original scripts opened in notepad++ as well so you can have a split view for comparison.1 point

Sora no Tsukurikata Final: Final Arc, Haru route
gustave154 reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
Surprisingly enough, Sora no Tsukurikata has managed to avoid driving me insane with rage. *pauses for the gasps of shock and the screeches of terror from the audience* In the end, this VN managed to mostly avoid the violence you would see in most VNs with mafia members as main characters, and it did so without going down the 'total moe-moe' route that most VN writers would have chosen in the same case. Haru is the main heroine of the game, but her route doesn't relegate the other heroines to inferiority like many other ladder-type main heroines do. Thankfully, it feels almost identical to the other routes, save in that her route not only uses the events in her arc but also the other arcs to make it over into a complete story. That was a nice choice on the part of the author, in that it made the other heroine routes 'real' without taking away the fact that Haru was the main heroine. Haru is... a bit weird. She's an up and coming mage with a penchant for sticking her nose in other people's business and a cheerful optimism+childish idealism that would be annoying if it weren't also leavened with a surprisingly high capacity for reason and an impressive ability to concentrate on solving a problem. She is, in the end, a normal kind-hearted girl, but this is one of those rare cases where that didn't turn out to be a bad thing. Perhaps the biggest difference between Haru's path and the others is that the protagonist's personal issues are revealed and resolved in full, though perhaps not in a way that I would consider satisfying. In fact, I thought the events leading up the end of the fourth arc and the beginning of Haru's story were way too rushed. It seemed as if they deliberately truncated the protagonist's personal suffering in order to focus on Haru... and while that is typical for the average charage, it surprised me in a VN that has been so very atypical otherwise. One thing I liked about the endings in the VN is that they all extend several years past the climax of the story... and into the period of time where the characters have chosen their paths in life, rather than merely going with the flow. Now, for my verdict on what I enjoyed most about this VN... it was the comedy, of course. The character dynamic in this VN clicks in that ideal way that you see in the best VNs (though the antagonist is weak and/or a non-entity for most of the game), and that leads to some amusing running jokes. Overall, this VN was a fun ride. It isn't an especially violent one (well, outside of Rizal cursing anyone who uses a gun to die repeatedly and be resurrected until they go insane), despite the mafia element. This surprised me, considering the way the VN began, but it wasn't as much of a disappointment to me as it might have been. This is no kamige, but it is definitely VN of the Month material.1 point -

How old is old?
juss100 reacted to Infernoplex for a topic
Well, hello there, dear oldtimer You'd be surprised how much of you older guys are into anime and VNs ... I don't find those two hobbies to be age-restricted so you have no reason to feel "too old" in order to enjoy any of them ... While that is true, that generally younger people are into these mediums, I think that from my experience there's a huge matter of chance when it comes to age statistics in anime, manga and VN groups ... in my country, the most prominent fan-organization that deals with anything Japanese (anime, Japanese culture, etc.) consists of many different age-groups and the leaders of that organization are all 30+ who mostly finished Japanese-related studies and/or are heavily involved into promoting anything Japanese. Also, a lot of members are in the age group of between 25-35, I think that almost half of the entire group are all 30+ so it's a matter of chance will the anime group you are joining have more or less of that age group. I personally don't think it's awkward when people 40+ enjoy anime because I simply don't find it to be age-restricting as I already said. Some of the best anime titles (mostly oldies) can be enjoyed by all age-groups ... Since I am also planning to start up a blog one day, I was kind of curious about your Wordpress blog so I decided to check it out since you linked it here ... From it I have learned you are also into JRPGs which is very much what I kind of expected since usually anime and VN fans also like JRPGs. And I am also in that group I think that exposure to anime made me a big fan of 2D, 2.5D, 3D Fighting Games aswell as JRPG type of games (and later on, also a fan of VNs) ... I was kind of interested into the matter but it seems you didn't yet post any opinion on any of the JRPGs so I decided to read your reviews about Divi-Dead (it's the only title I know of amongst these 4 you wrote about, I didn't read .Moon, Planetarian nor Eve) ... One word of advice, if you intend on reading a lot of VNs in your free time (when you are not on the job and have spare time), a great idea is to make a VNDB account ... When I first started reading VNs (back in 2010), I didn't know I was going to be pulled into it that much and never bothered to create an account there but as soon as I returned back to that hobby I discovered how useful VNDB really is for me, it is definitively worth it to have kind of a backlog of what you read already and it's a great tool for searching for new VNs because of tags, language and other filters available ... Anyways, I wanted to leave a reply on the Divi-Dead review but since you split it into two (1,2) I will post my comments here for both of them: Ku-No? Is that an anime or a VN? Did you mean YU-NO? I know of a VN by that name which fits in the description of an older VN (considered a classis aswell) ... I can pretty much agree with this to some degree, the entire beginning is kind of very slow paced and very boring at times, I remember being annoyed by the entire map system in this VN and having to click 100 times on all the same places until the time and day progressed further ... I will have to be honest here and say that this is kind of true because I did find something interesting in the plot after like a lot of crawling through the questionably translated text and some rather funny H-scenes I loved the setting and the occult theme behind it because I love mysteries and suspense, but my final opinion on this VN is that it didn't deliver my expectations at the end ... And I was very confused at some of the stuff that happened later on and I've discovered that there were some plot developments lost in the translation (I kind of noticed that translation seemed off at times already) ... My memory of Divi Dead has kind of faded right now (I've read it like in 2011 I think) and I don't remember the scenes with mysterious scent but I do remember some fantasy black magic stuff aswell as badly scened rituals at the end ... But I do have a very good memory of Bible Black (my first read VN that also got me into the genre itself) and the black magic in it (the whole occult theme of it) and comparing them now, my opinion is that Bible Black has done it 10 times better even though BB is considered a nukige unlike Divi-Dead which tries to have some kind of a good occult mystery plot ... Heck, I even enjoyed the plot (if one could say that it exists) of BB more than I enjoyed Divi-Dead (hence the reason why I rated Bible Black pretty big on my list because I love the VNs who can be both a good nukige and good in plot-wise sense), and I could go into analysis of why do I feel like that about it ... And here we come to one of the reasons why I didn't like Divi-Dead ... If I have to use a walkthrough just in order to play the VN normally, then that's a minus in my opinion, whenever I play or read something, I tend to play it without any walkthroughs and if a game requires one just in order to be playable, than I am better off not reading that VN at all ... When I played Divi-Dead, my first ending was I think the "A" ending (if I remember correctly, it has A, B, C endings and all 2x times) ... At the end I didn't finish off all the endings, I simply couldn't torture myself anymore with it and at the end I had a pretty low opinion of Divi-Dead ... Well, I guess you could say that for that time the artwork really was terrific but I didn't find it that amazing really ... BB for example has aged very well in my opinion and I found it more interesting than the art in Divi-Dead though I am aware that Divi-Dead is older than BB ... Though I guess you could say that the delicate scenes (bloody, ritual, not H-scenes) were done very good in DD (for that time). This is true and that's why my favourite nukiges are the ones that can provide both the good story and good H-scenes (story-wise VNs usually have sex as a means to conclude the story at the end, not as a way to make progress) ... It's obvious already that I am kind of a BB fan and that I consider it to be a nukige that has somewhat connectable H-scenes which fit in the setting of the VN, for some reason I didn't find H-scenes in it to be forcable like in some other VNs, I know it has lots of rape and some rather fetishy stuff but all in all, it's what I consider to be a good nukige. Unlike Divi-Dead which has sex scenes but I found them rather to be either boring or funny (I remember having a laugh at some of these H-scenes in DD, like the librarian scene and some others, comedy gold XD) ... About the dismembered part - you ain't seen nothing yet, try reading a guro type of VN (I agree, it's not fappable) ... As for the forcible part, you are talking about rape I guess and I have to say that so far the only VN where I was okay with rape was Bible Black ... Later on when I read some other titles like Sensei 2, My Sex Slave is a Classmate and some others, I found rape to be quite unappealing in those VNs, it just isn't on the level of BB ... At the end, I don't think I understood much about Divi-Dead, there are some very good plot twists at the very end that I am not going to spoil here but overall some things were left unexplained (I forgot now which, I read it long ago) and the sex scenes didn't really mean much to me here, I didn't even find them as a way to advance the plot, I remember being quite surprised how sudden some of these scenes were, granted - there were some that fitted perfectly but some of them just didn't stood out for me ... This is the best paragraph of all, I agree with this fully, now you reminded me why I never finished all the routes xD ... That's one of the reasons why I decided to read explanations on the Internet after finishing two routes ... I just couldn't play it anymore, everything about Divi-Dead was kind of not meeting my expectations ... And even though I am a completionist I just couldn't finish it after all those hours spent trying to get it till the end xD ... Your conclusion remarks are very true ("could-have-been") and that's similiar to what I am thinking of it. Though I can't agree with the last part: I didn't find any of the scenes to be fappable, pretty much not a VN I'd read for titillation. Kind of a long post, sorry I wanted to give some feedback for one of your reviews1 point -

Sora no Tsukurikata part two: Second Arc and Yurika
gustave154 reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
The second arc of this story is focused narrowly on the aftermath of the first arc and Yurika. Yurika is a rare type in VNs these days... a sexy adult woman who isn't another man's wife or widow (yes, I went there). She is a member of the 'Virgin of Chains', the more 'peaceful' of the two mafia groups dominating the area. She is the protagonist's friend, occasional partner, drinking buddy, and sex friend. She has a somewhat nihilistic attitude toward life and an absolute love of teasing the protagonist... and anyone else who leaves an opening for her. Like all the heroines in this VN, she is fairly attractive, though she is somewhat overly pessimistic at times. Of course, she has very good reason for this, but I won't spoil that for you. In the aftermath of the second arc, I took pleasure in reading her path, which was a bit more icha-love focused than Kazuha's was at first. It does fall into the classic 'it was nice up to this point precisely to outline the drama' area, so the drama near the end of the path is pretty satisfying, and I honestly enjoyed the atmosphere of the path as a whole. I will say that I preferred Kazuha's path and I thought they could have gone a bit farther with her personal story (I thought that they glossed over a bit too much detail when it came to her eye).1 point -

Learning a language for a hobby is retarded
akaritan reacted to OriginalRen for a topic
You know, a person who chooses to learn a language has every right to choose why they want to learn a language. The fact they want to take the time to learn a language, even if it's just for a single core skill (reading, writing, listening, speaking), makes them that much better of a person to begin with in my eyes. When I was in middle school, learning a second language was one of the most pleasurable experiences of my life. Going into high school, I expanded that further and decided to major in French and Italian language studies when I reached college. I enjoyed it so much, that I ended up taking Latin, German, and ancient Greek for fun. Oddly enough, I ended up learning Italian because of a friend I met in an online game. I spent 5 years of my life learning a language, which included studying abroad my freshman year, all because of a silly game online. I don't even speak to that person anymore or know what happened to them. As a teacher of Japanese students, I can confidently say that everyone has a reason for learning a language. While most 2D animated fans outside of Japan hope to expand their reading skills, that doesn't mean they are retarded for wanting to do so. A lot of Japanese students only care about speaking English, and the comparison between cultures is what makes me respect language that much more. While it does make me sad thinking they are missing out on so much more by ignoring the other core skills, who is anyone to judge? Learning a language is a very difficult task, and even if some people find it a lot easier than others, it still takes time and effort. To those who want to learn Japanese for a hobby, I respect them for making an effort to begin with. Teaching ESL and EFL is an entirely different beast. The people who enjoy this hobby aren't required to learn Japanese, yet they do it out of pure excitement and enjoyment. Growing up, we've all had a dream, and even if that dream has changed at some point in our life, something still exists. Why call those who want to learn a language for a hobby they love retarded? I've taught preschoolers who don't even know their native language, and even then I can see the excitement on those children's eyes. I've talked with their mothers and I can tell they aren't doing this for their child's future, but because they want them to enjoy something and be excited. Even if you don't love kids, there really is a joy to seeing someone's face light up when they are having fun. And it's not just the kids. I've taught English to business students, a Japanese history professor for Korean students, a husband and wife who have some spare time, and lonely widows hoping to meet new partners in their life. I've taught elementary schools, junior high school girls, and high school students who don't even know what they want to do when they get older. It doesn't matter their age, the joy I feel as a teacher knowing they have reached that "ah-ha!" moment in their life and the excitement they feel being able to use the language for the purpose they want is all that matters. A lot of VN and anime fans don't show it, but I promise that at some point they have felt the excitement about being able to finally read or use Japanese in some way or another. Nobody is retarded for that; nobody should feel worse than they already are in a hobby that a lot of people find appalling to begin with. Language is a wonderful thing, and I feel those who want to learn it for whatever reason they feel like deserve a great amount of encouragement. While I wish individuals would expand their language learning beyond a single core skill, I always need to remind myself that the joy of being a teacher is watching your students grow. It doesn't matter their age, hearing their stories is always a joy. Nobody is retarded for learning a language, and should never, ever feel that way.1 point -
Firstly, you need to understand why a person need to learn another language. If it is necessary for his buisness, travel or exploring the foreign culture and traditions, it is useful exercise. But to learn the language just for the game, I don't think it's incredibly reasonable move. Just how many kamiges left untranslated for us to sacrifice our minds for moonrunes? I've been learning English for nearly two decades and have no problem with books, novels or movies, but still it's hard for me to write and formulate my thoughts. That's because I have no experience with native English speakers in real life. You just can't call yourself a polyglot without spending time in another country. Secondly, it's not the matter of how someone spends their free time. The most important thing is how you treat your activity. If you learn the language just for the praise, it will lead you nowhere. All efforts will be in vain. And such person will be perceived as a hypocrite. Do not treat your lifetime so lightly. Whatever it is, everyone has a choice. And everyone is master of their time. Just think ahead before doing something.1 point

If people want to learn a language just to read more porn games, and not because of bullshit like "I like the culture" or "I want to go to x country" etc. then more power to them.1 point

Good to know. Honestly, you (and every VN maker) should focus on Steam releases and also "stealing" a part of the anime market. Anime is far more established since it has taken root here from the 90s. It also experimented a boom in the early 2000s. I've followed it since 1998. To give a simple idea, some visibiltiy in anime conventions could work, as many anime fans own a PC (presumably to watch anime there), so you're halfway there to make them buy your games. Also transition from anime to VNs is nearly seamless. I say this because, to my knowledge, anime conventions in Spain don't really feature VNs. In fact it's the opposite, "vosotros" is informal second person plural, "ustedes" is formal. Just like German "du" and "Sie". You can't bash others if you don't even know the language...1 point
