I'm going to say this straight out... Awesome job, Alcot!!! There is a peculiar balance needed to make the perfect fantasy story-focused charage... and it has literally been years since the last time a VN has managed it. I should know, since I play everything fantasy that isn't a nukige and some that are. Alcot's formula of comedy (in particular sexual comedy and situational comedy) is pretty straightforward and easy to enjoy, going across cultural lines fairly easily. As such, it doesn't require much effort to enjoy. That provides one element of this VN that 'completes' it. Another element is the setting. Is there a solid setting? Is that setting vital to the story and utilized well to enhance it and give it life? That is definitely the case with this VN. The fantasy elements are vital to every aspect of this VN and touch upon every element of the story. I am happy to say that this VN is one of those rare fantasy VNs (non-chuuni, non-rpg) where the setting is so integral to the story as to make it inseparable. Third is the heroine paths. Are the heroine paths consistent with the setting and the story of the common route? Are none of the heroines overly favored? Is there a good balance between ichaicha, drama, and plot? I can say yes to all these questions with this VN. The heroine paths are universally solid, with none of them exceptionally favored over the others. I was seriously impressed at the creativity of the writer when dealing with the endings, since they pretty much universally deviated from the 'golden road' of charage in peculiar ways while keeping to the spirit of the genre (happy endings for beloved characters). Fourth is the characters in general. Do they fit into the story? Do the relationships between the characters feel 'alive', even if they aren't necessarily always believable from an excessively realistic point of view? For that matter, does the protagonist 'fit' into his role as the center of the story (and the heroines' affections)? Again, the answer is yes to all. While the protagonist isn't necessarily exceptional in most ways, he has many qualities that both make him attractive enough to make the romance portions feel real, as well as the roundness to justify such a protagonist-centric story. What this all comes down to is that this VN is fairly close to a perfect example of the best of the sub-genre, as well as being an example of why I still play charage, even though most of them are crap hiding the gems. For people who like a strong element of fantasy in their charage, as well as a strong plot for both the characters and the game in general, this is an excellent choice. For those who prefer to avoid seriousness and stress at all costs, it might be a too much though. Also... SPOILERS BELOW2 points -
Let me put down a few clarifying points regarding this blog. I kind of felt that I had to write down my feelings about VNs I read somewhere, and this seems to be a nice place for the same. I also drew much of my inspiration from Clephas, who is my guru when it comes to VNs (I proclaim this myself). 0. This blog is NOT a review or what-to-read-next-recommendations site. This is only about the VNs I read and want to write about. Besides, I have got nowhere enough experience to be doing that. Clephas VN home is the place I recommend you go for the same. The only ones I can recommend are the ones I enjoyed reading, regardless of their flaws or things like that. 2. I don't read a lot of VNs in a short period. While I enjoy reading VNs a lot, it is impossible for me to read several VNs in a short span of time, simply because my speed is not enough. 3. My thoughts WILL be biased towards heroines I find more likeable. This is also part of the reason why my posts won't count as "reviews". They won't be unbiased. I will tend to gush more about heroine routes I liked, rather than trying to judge them from an objective viewpoint. 4. You may or may not like what I like. This goes without saying, but I had to make it clear. Each person has their own way of thinking and expectations from VNs. That being said... I'll dive in.2 points

@Novel21 Huh, I haven't played it, though I have heard of it. I'm currently playing Togainu no Chi [ saw the anime when I was younger, didn't even realize it was an N+C game until last week! ]. The art style of Break Chance looks interesting, and the plot sounds pretty damned good, too. T____T we're debating on rethinking our core plot with the Company and everything since it's been done so much. But seeing as how it's kind of just the glue that holds each character's story together, it's proving a bit tricky. The main 'element' in our game I guess are the Voidwalkers and the Boundary breaking down. How does the time traveling thing work in BCM, out of curiosity?1 point

I have played many Yaoi games my favorite are this game https://vndb.org/v8195 It's very cool game to play1 point
-
@Firemonk Oh that's awesome. What's your game called? And yeah, if we do it as an expansion, they'd pay extra. But it would mean we'd have to draw twice the number of CGs, make a whole new character model...the work would definitely be worth it though since it would expand our market two- or three-fold.1 point
-
@ZodiaX yea it does I would include it but make it something you have to buy/ pay extra for not only would that make it appeal to the male side of the situation but you double your profits, I mean look at me I've made 14,063 EUR in a couple of days, which if I did the math right is exactly 15,000 USD just throwing that's out there1 point
-
@Firemonk Heh I think so. We've been considering giving the player an option to play as a male or a female, but that would mean twice the amount of work. Maybe as an expansion or something. My personal preferences aside, yaoi works have a pretty big community and following.1 point

Yeah agreed! I know Steam recently released an 18+ game so I'm HOPING they can Greenlight it when the time comes around for its release. I just wonder, since they say the content is pretty mature, if Steam would actively release something like that. I really, reallyyyyy hope so, though! ಥ ◡ ಥ Also omg look how cute this guy is!! I adore the 'best-friend' love interests, and this guy looks super fun and quirky. Guaaahhh I hope they reveal more character designs soon. ❤❤1 point -

Your favourite male leads
Narcosis reacted to Arcadeotic for a topic
Nikola Tesla from Ourai no Gahkthun is by far my favorite VN male character lead. He's exactly what I'd want from the stoic/badass character archetype with some witty sarcasm I can appreciate and he's just exhuding charm. Another good male lead would be Akihito from Comyu, who I very much love for how much more down-to-earth he is in comparison to most chuunige protagonists. Now, I've never really cared for anime protagonists unless they're adapted from certain Light Novels or Manga, but I must say that my favorite Light Novel protagonists have to be Ainz Ooal Gown/Momonga from Overlord, and Dantalion from Dungeon Defence. They both share the similarity of being somewhat of normal persons coming from our normal world to a fantasy-setting, though Dantalion's circumstances are a bit different. They're both different than the norm in a way that they just don't even want to go back since they don't have anything special to go back to. The two are also warped in their mindset, though in Ainz's case, it's because of the transformation, but Dantalion was just warped before he came to the new world. They're both intelligent and are that what you'd call "rulers". The way they drive their own goals above all else is quite interesting and entertaining to read. They're both also pretty sadistic and ruthless to everyone, who's not on their side, but show a degree of manners before all of that, which I do enjoy to a immense degree. They're both exceptionally fleshed out characters, and their mindsets, goals, and means of achieving said goals differentiate quited a lot from the norm, and overall, it's quite refreshing to see and read that. They're fantastic1 point -
For Veterans: Which heroines do you still love even now?
mitchhamilton reacted to Nandemonai for a topic
I've played more VNs than many, but not nearly "hundreds". And being restricted to English VNs, means many of the ones I have played are from the dark days of official localizations, when mainly crap yarugee was being localized. Ones that stick out particularly: - Yuka from Crescendo. (I swear, I was going to pick her before I saw two other people in this thread do it. I was into her before she was popular, god damn it! ) - Sora from Ever 17. - Sari from Nocturnal Illusion. (Big surprise, I named someone from a game I liked enough to work on.) She's probably the most memorable of the game's cast, for reasons I won't elaborate on (the game's so old that so few who have played it are still fans that it's come back around to spoiler territory!) - Sei from Koihime Musou. Pretty much everything she does is memorable, and half of it is completely hilarious.1 point -
Well, long time no content here, eh. So, uhh, I started writing a diary when I poop. But it’s in bad Fapanese. I have some faint hope that seeing my amusing stumbles might inspire you to practice writing in Japanese. Yes, you over there in my target audience of maybe one person. The actual content of this entry is unlikely to inspire anyone, so it’s all the better that nobody will understand it anyway. For authenticity (and hopefully showing that it’s ok to mess up a bit or something) I have preserved all the grammatical and kanji errors I made, noting what I spotted reading through it again below. Fuckups [1] I’m not even sure if the つつ grammar is any good here, but I made a more fundamental error. つつ needs to be attached to the actual stem of the verb in question (here 近づく), rather than what you get when I use ichidan verb rules on godan verbs. tl;dr this should be 近づきつつ. [2] While 一月 apparently can mean “one month”, it also means “January”. What I meant to write was 一ヶ月. [3] Pls decide if you want a chouon or not in the word you katakana’d because you don’t know the fapanese one, zaka. [4] I wrote this kanji wrong, using 良 as the right side. [5]感請 should be 感情 here. [6] I wrote 機 without the tree on the left and kinda wrong in general. I have recreated my failure in paint for you to enjoy. 準備のことはまだ、でも今すぐやるつもりです。メーレは・・・まぁ。 View the full article1 point

Valmore reacted to Fred the Barber for a topic
In the anime, he's full of personality and I find him really likeable, but in the VN, since the player is making all the decisions and since you hardly see his face, he comes off as not having much of a personality, at least to me. I can appreciate most any protagonist with a sprite. If they don't get a sprite, I generally don't think of them much at all. Akihito from Comyu and Gii from Sekien no Inganock were both interesting to me, but probably largely because they had sprites (even though Akihito's wasn't used all the time, by a long shot). I also rather like Daijuuji Kurou from Demonbane... can't remember if he gets a sprite or not (I don't think he does), but they're not shy about showing him in CGs, at least, which is almost as good. When they make the protag faceless even in CGs, I can't help but roll my eyes.1 point -
Tomoya from Clannad, because he's basically just me. I generally like most male characters in Overdrive games (excluding Edelweiss, because it's the male version of Ikikoi). Lastly, the protagonist from Ayakashibito is easily one of the most believable characters I've ever come across. After finishing the VN, I felt like I had known him for years and wouldn't be surprised if he suddenly appeared on my doorstep.1 point

I really, really want to read Sayonara wo Oshiete. The art looks beautiful, especially for its time, and it's story and themes sound right up my alley. In a similar vein, I would love to read Iwaihime and Fairytail Requiem. I love both 07th and Liarsoft. I already know that Ryukishi is good at that sort of thing and I would absolutely love to read a horror from Liarsoft, which might be my favorite VN producer.1 point -

Steins;Gate 0 Review Discussion
Nandemonai reacted to Decay for a topic
So, I actually read the first few hours of this. It dumps you in right after the events of the first game without explaining anything to you or bothering to introduce the existing characters. And everything that's happening is motivated by or directly related to the events of the first game. Terms like "SERN Rounder" are thrown around and you're expected to know their significance. The only explanations offered are the brief snippets from the in-game encyclopedia which are entirely inadequate for anything other than reminding forgetful fans of the first game. Basically, if you go into S;G0 without playing the first game, you will be completely and utterly baffled by the first few hours. Perhaps as things go on you'll be able to get a handle on what happened in the past and what's happening in the current story, but it's something you'll have to work at piecing together. And it's also something that will hamper your enjoyment of S;G0, while completely spoiling the first game in the process. Again, though, I don't think this is necessarily a negative. On the contrary, often times sequels that try to be new-player-friendly end up losing something by loosening their connection to their predecessors. I think such a strong connection to the previous game can actually be seen as a positive. And for a game review, I don't think something like "a translator giving incorrect information on a message board" should be a factor, but that's more due to my personal review philosophy of trying to review games on their own merits, not taking such outside factors into account.1 point -
How attached can you get?
Nandemonai reacted to Funyarinpa for a topic
For me, it really depends on the game and how much I care about the characters' relationships (or, if it's based on self-insert, how much I am attracted to that character). Often, by investment in a given relationship is connected to how it is executed and how it ties into the story. Ever17 had four routes that had romance, and I only cared for the romance in Sora's route, for example- It had some really intriguing themes and executed them in a poignant and thought-provoking way. It was my favorite love story in VNs for a long time. Sora was also beautiful. Two certain characters in Fata Morgana, however, have surpassed Sora and Takeshi's relationship for me. These two characters have an incredibly fleshed out and nuanced relationship that develops in a truly heartfelt way, and ultimately, you end up cheering for the two of them. Will not say much more, but that is half the reason this VN is my VNOTY, GOTY, and in my top 5 VNs. (From a literary perspective, it's only matched by Umineko.) Grisaia's romances in comparison, for example, did nothing for me because pretty much none of the girls clicked with me -nor did their routes except one particular flashback- and it was a banal story if you ask me. Same goes for any sort of romance in Muv-Luv.1 point -
