So I wanted to do a proper post about this and I gave up on that idea while I was writing it and then I was doing a blog and I also quit in the middle of it too, so here it is the lazy, bad and short version of both them. I wanted to give my thanks to a few people in the forum, very few, since i don't really talk a lot with many of you... actually I really dislike the idea of mentioning people in particular so screw that. So, happy new year everyone! 2016 was probably the worst year of my whole life, by far (no, not because of trump, fuck that! xD ). I'm hoping that 2017 can be at least a bit better... although 2016 did have a few good moments (I finally graduated from the university yaaay) and some funny moments too (that trump thread xD ) It really saddens me to see how many of you can't take a fucking joke anymore and you also feel the need to edit or censor them because of that, like the one that Tyr made that was full of awesome memes, references and jokes and yes even if you don't believe it he probably jokes around 80% of the time or is being sarcastic except when he is not.. which is around 99% of the time (I'm crossing your name out because i don't want to mention anyone) I didn't know that everyone was so easily triggered in this forum : ( when somebody can't take a joke and feels the need to shut the other person up because it feels aggrieved... it says a lot about how we are doing as individuals and also as a community, I noticed it not only on fuwa but on Twitter, Facebook, or any social media too, everyone seems to be at their edge all the time... come on take everything in a less serious manner! But please ignore all my rant, I don't want to start a fight I just wanted to point that out and nothing more. So yeah, happy new year! Best wishes to all of you, specially to all that people that don't like me.6 points

Readability And Eliminating Unintentional Ambiguity: That's Where It Starts
Darklord Rooke and one other reacted to Fred the Barber for a blog entry
While I certainly agree that character dialogue needs to communicate characterization, through diction, syntactical choices, or even using bad grammar, the top priority is always that their dialogue be readable (unless very intentionally unreadable, of course, which should be exceptional). Here's a completely different example of optimizing for readability, and one which should be near and dear to the hearts of many eroge players: even when the heroine has her mouth full of little protag, the way she slurs her consonants is usually not faithfully recorded in the subtitles, because to do so renders it completely unreadable (I know; I've tried). If you try to actually write down what the dialogue you have would sound like with a large, cylindrical object in your mouth, even though the speech may be completely understandable, the written form of it will usually not be. This, I believe, is because writing is such a low-resolution record of spoken speech. When you're missing all the extra intonation and the assorted sounds made in this circumstance which simply aren't writable in the Roman alphabet, it's hard to try to mimic the actual spoken sounds without going so far off the written version that the brain can no longer recognize the word. That's why, in this instance, most of the time you should massively tone down the consonant slurring, relative to the voice over, in the written text. That sounds pretty unrelated, but it's still on this same theme of optimizing for readability. The most important thing isn't even if you agree with either of those examples at all, but rather that you understand and agree with the broader principle of which these are just two instances. Throughout most of most VNs, you should generally be optimizing for ease and speed of readability, where you can do so without sacrificing tone, characterization, etc.,2 points -
Offensive ableist expressions you are probably using on your daily life
DarkZedge and one other reacted to Barktooth for a blog entry
It would be l*me if Sana used them. You must be b*ind if you didn't see that coming. Sure, some of them will feel limited, but some won't. It depends on the person. Rin in Katawa Shoujo is a good example, she doesn't think not having arms is a disadvantage to her at all. Even if one avoids these words around everyone else, they would still be acting this way for the sake of the disabled, so I think it may offend certain people regardless. Or maybe not, at this point I don't know anymore. In either case, while I can't speak for anyone else, to me the usage of the words you listed plays a big role in whether they are perceived as "ableist" or not. If I call someone crazy, I'm simply trying to convey that they are acting in an irrational and nonsensical fashion, not that they are mentally disabled, or that their behavior stems from having a mental illness. The expression might have originated from someone likening a person acting nonsensically to the behavior of mentally disabled individuals, but the way it is used now, I don't believe such a link exists anymore. In short, if you are mentally disabled but aren't going berserk on anyone, I won't call you crazy. However, if you're mentally healthy yet having a fit, I might just do so.2 points -

People need to separate the idea of 'insulted' and 'offended'. If I 'insult' someone, that person may feel 'offended', but that doesn't mean if someone is offended that they were insulted. This is because an 'insult' refers to the intent of the offender, whereas being offended refers to the emotions of the offendee. The two words are often mixed together to do away with the pesky idea that some people just go around looking to be offended, and catering to these people is sometimes more trouble than it's worth. There's nothing insulting about using the word 'blinded'. It denotes 'not being able to see', so blinded by fear means not being able to see clearly due to you being such a timid tabby. It's an excellent descriptive word that often has no prejudice behind it. That people are offended by this is only natural, because some people are offended by anything. Case in point, the other day at the supermarket the lady in front of me had such an overpowering body odour that it assaulted my senses. This, I found, was quite offensive and caused me to move to another aisle. Alas, it did not give me the right to spritz her copiously with perfume. And I'm not going to stop calling people stupid when they're being stupid because it offends those with intellectual problems. It's, once again, an excellent descriptive word. The idea of institutionalised ableism is perfectly normal. Countries are about growth and coming out on top in that international competition countries are locked in with each other. The more they win, the more resources they nab for its people. Same deal with businesses. Countries and businesses will look for the best people to carry out certain tasks, certain work, and preference will naturally go to those more able because these people are often able to more effectively carry out these tasks. The up side of this is that society is now in a position to adequately care for the disabled, unlike in the past where they were often killed off for being a drain on resources, and we got to this point partly by being terribly ableist. Society is interested in getting as far away from nature as possible, nature is all about survival of the fittest (because life was harsh and you needed to be tough to survive) and is not a nice place. These days we're cushioned away from real life enough that we can provide for those less fortunate. I regularly use all except for words 3, 11, 12, and 13. However I'm an aspiring writing, and writers are taught not to be too PC in their writing ...2 points -

I wanted to wait until the year is over before I write my list for this year, but of course I haven't had the time to actually look at the December releases and now the year is over. Luckily, there isn't much interesting for me anyway. Before we start, just let me mention some noteworthy December titles: Venus Blood Ragnarok could be a nice game, but I don't really like the Venus Blood series, and as some kind of sequel it probably won't win me over anyway. I have played the trial of Meguru Sekai de Towanaru Chikai wo and it really didn't impress me. Looked like an even cheaper version of Izumo 4. And Izumo 4 was already a letdown last year. The RPG mechanics of Izumo 4 are very simple and Meguru Sekai de seems even simpler. But that is not all, contrary to Izumo 4, this time the game also looks pretty ugly! It that the reason why Yamamoto Kazue changed her name to Yamamoto ☆ Kazue for this? Well, I probably will play it nonetheless because I don't like to judge something I haven't really played, but eh, not in the near future. That's it for December. The rest doesn't interest me or I already know it will be bad (You can't fool me Moonstone!). Did I just say I don't judge something I haven't played? Eh, whatever... But now some honorable mentions of games that actually looked interesting but I haven't had the time to read them, so they won't be in my 2016 list: Dungeons & Daimeiwaku: I've read the trial, but haven't found the time to read the actual game. I'm sure it's good but it's kind of demotivating for me to read an RPG without any gameplay, heh. Iwaihime: Ryukishi07 and horror should be exactly what I'm looking for but for some reason I have this untouched on my hdd for a year now. Maybe I miss the Ryukishi07-art, since it doesn't look as good with generic moeblobs. Trianthology: Now I have the art, but not a full Ryukishi07 game, haha. Still, I have to read this sometime soon. Kanojo * Step: This could probably be the "Best Charage" of 2016 as far as I have seen it. The humor is great, something that's really missing in pretty much every other modern charage. It's a shame that the genre charage has such a low priority for me, so I haven't really read much of this VN so far. Now I mention some games people might expect in my list of 2016's best eroge, but I actually found them to be only mediocre: Shi ni Iku Kimi, Yakata ni Mebuku Zouo: Yeah, I wasn't as excited about this as everyone else. I do not fetishize gore. I like death as an element of a thrilling story, but death in Nikuniku has no impact. There is no meaning in killing someone when they can't die. Baka Dakedo Chinchin Shaburu no Dake wa Jouzu na Chii-chan: This game has a Genre-Shift tag of 3.0 on vndb and some people claim it would be different than what you expect it to be. Spoiler: It's exactly what it looks like! WTF are the people talking about? lol Maitetsu: Borefest and not even usable as a lolige. Really only interesting for train otakus. Now let's start with the list of maybe not necessarily the best but the most impressive eroge of 2016, for me at least: Eroge of the Year: Natsu no Kusari Best game without a doubt, there is no other contender here. If I would make a Top 5 of 2017, the second place would already be many, many levels under this one. It's so good (or all the other recent games are just so bad, lol). I have already written walls of text in other threads about this game so I won't repeat myself here. I will just say that this game is exactly what I'm looking for when I read an eroge, the reason why I even started with this medium. Great characterization and the perfect use of narration, music, visuals and voices makes this one of the most compelling short stories I have read in years. Best NTR Eroge: Dearest Blue The lack of elf is really showing and I certainly can't say that any LiLiM game is really good, but at least with Dearest Blue LiLiM improved on their formula and made it its best game so far. We still have some obvious "Do you want to get NTR'd"-choices, but they are not as in-your-face as in previous titles. Some choices make you wonder what will actually happen if you go this route and that at least is an improvement. In some instances there is some believable drama and especially one route is good where you can cheer for both, the protagonist and the rival because both characters are likable. The main heroine is also well-characterized, being an independent and strong woman without going too bitchy or slutty. Still, not everything is good. Pretty much every male character except the aforementioned one is a one-dimensional evil villain. The biggest problem however is that the story is build around some kind of NTR/death-game where all the players need to outwit each other ... but in the end there are no mind games or twists happening! Heck, even I could probably win this game because every other character is so bad at this, not having a plan or making retarded moves. What a disappointment! Read this for the relationship drama, not for the death game. Best Modern Oldschool Eroge: Ryuudouji Shimon no Inbou This might be an unpopular opinion, but I really think that the writing in many of the latest Mink-games is topnotch. Really, if Mink-games weren't conceptually so limited (being only nukige), they could be really great. Why is that? Is it because Mink is such an old company that they still carry on old writing traditions which were established in the Golden Age of eroge? That at least would explain why Ryuudouji Shimon no Inbou is so good when it conceptually shouldn't be! Don't misunderstand me, Ryuudouji Shimon no Inbou is not a good slave-training eroge. There is no real SLG gameplay here, instead the only choice the player has is to visit 1 of 20 locations every day hoping that some kind of event happens there. There is no indication which area you have to visit, neither in script nor in the interface, it's completely by chance. Save-scumming and blindly gathering events at its finest, huh. But if you can look behind this (preferably with a walkthrough), you will find a game that feels like the late 90s. Mainly because this is a blatant clone of 99's Yakin Byoutou. It's pretty much "Night Shift School Girls". Aside from the setting that is now a school, we have the same kind of characters, the same storyline and the same development Yakin Byoutou had. And it's great, because that formula still works 17 years later! The ugly main character, who has just enough understanding of the human psyche to get what he wants, the pure maidens who fall into his traps, not because they are sluts but because they are believable corrupted, and the evil female mastermind who is probably even worse than the main character. It's beautiful. The nostalgia is strong with this one. Best Dark and Edgy Eroge: Tokage no Shippo Kiri I'm cheating here a bit because the game was released in November 2015. But since the fandisc was released in January last year which means the full experience was only available to us in 2016, I see it as 2016 game. There is not much to say here, what Derg not already said. Games like this prove that even low-budget publisher can make good games, if they just try. CYCLET is not Black Cyc, but it tries nonetheless to be something special and succeeds in setting itself apart from all the other low budget publisher. Maybe that is the reason we only had one CYCLET game in 2016; they emphasize on quality, not quantity. Best RPG: Dungeon of Regalias Let's not talk about the story and the characters. They are terrible, like in every Astronauts Sirius game. But damn is the gameplay addicting and actually good. Like in, really, really good. This is probably one of the best ero-dungeon crawler existing. They did everything right with this one. Hard difficulty available from start. Skills as "items" which can be equipped so you can change your build without any resetting of skill points like in other games. Monsters who all act differently thus forcing you to change your strategy and character builds and party constantly. Great game. Best SRPG: Sankai Ou no Yubiwa I'm probably the only one, but ... I actually liked 2016's Eushully game. Yeah, really. Ok, it wasn't really a good SRPG; it actually had many flaws, like being far too easy and exploitable and the routes being too similar to each other... but... I liked the concept. Having six main characters who all represent a different kind of approach to the Ero-RPG genre is really something I wish more games would do. I hate the good guy, the antihero and the maou archetype, and sadly most Eushully games have one of these three as their main character. But Sankai Ou has also three other, more interesting protagonists to choose from. For example, I always wanted the angels to win in an Eushully game, and finally I have the opportunity to do this because the obligatory fallen-angel storyline is already covered in the other routes. Nice. Biggest disappointment: Extravaganza ~Mushigurui Hen~ I was so hyped for this one. The first true Black Cyc game after 5 years of absence. Written by Banya Izumi who we could trust with the task of continuing a beloved series, right? Right? No, it's awful. This game turned out to be an abomination which is quite remarkable because Black Cyc already milked the Extravaganza series with bad sidestories back when Black Cyc was still good for the most part. And Mushigurui Hen is even worse than these cheap nukige spinoffs. At least with cheap nukige fandisc, we know we get something bad. Mushigurui Hen on the other hand could have been good. It could have been awesome. But it wasn't. So what went wrong? You have these great characters with their epic background stories, but what do they do with them? Putting them in school, because school life is, as we all now, the most important thing ever. And if a character is too old for school, just make them into rich snobs whose only problem in life is being too old (meaning being 23 years old) and lamenting about not having the time to go to the cinema with friends because work (meaning being CEO and chilling all the day in the office). And if that wasn't bad enough, they also retcon a character death because this character was very popular back then and we need him for funny slice of life scenes now, yay. The most offending thing however is how this "sequel" actually takes place after the second arc of the original Extravaganza, which means before the last third of the original game. And all the important character events in the third arc which really were the heart of the Extravaganza story apparently don't take place in this timeline. Instead, we get inferior and meaningless drama with derailed characters in Mushigurui Hen which is apparently now the canon timeline. Hurray. Biggest insult: Everything released by Akabei Soft 3 I'm not going into this now, but literally every AKB3 game this year greatly offended me, just as Silky's Plus' games did last year. Let's just say that AKB3 makes games which represent everything that's wrong with modern eroge and have nothing left of what made eroge once great. (I might write a post explaining this statement in the near future.) It saddens me how popular these games are. A dark prospect for 2017.1 point

Hello, mina-san I think that people will call me by my username, so yeah, I'm Kazami Yuiji (I know, is Yuuji). I often go to this forum for walkthroughs and occasionally for talks. I enjoy reading visual novel, mangas, light novel and watching animes. I suppose that I'm somehow otaku, but I do not draw manga or write storys... (but I'd like to write a light novel) Anyway, just for fun, I really like Kazami Yuuji from Grisaia no Kajitsu. A great and proactive protagonist, a little good looking (I'm a guy) and... summary, he's really cool. Oh, I almost forgot... I'm French. So yeah, I kinda make (maybe) a lot of mistake so please forgive me But my english is not that bad and I want to practice a lot so I also have an account in Myanimelist (forum) and now... here ! Offensive ableist expressions you are probably using on your daily life
bigfatround0 reacted to *anoyoruniyakusokushita for a blog entry
So, as the poll doesn't seem to give me an answer any time soon, I decided to start with this one. For those who don't know, ableist means prejudice against those with disabilities. As most people in society are able-bodied, disabled people, as a minority, have to cope with toxic words and expressions that hurt them. By saying this words in a negative way, you are basically saying that disabled people are inferior. It's the same as using 'gay' as an insult. As those expressions are by no means necessary, we all can police ourselves in order to avoid them. Also, when I say 'ableist expressions', I'm not saying those who use them are ableist. Most people aren't even aware of the ableist connotations, so they aren't the ones to fault, society is. Here are some of the expressions and why they are ableist: 1. Blinded by ignorance, fear, etc. (offends blind people) 2. Crazy (offends people with mental diseases) 3. Cripple (a very offensive word for people with physical disabilities) 4. Dumb (refers to deaf people, or individuals with communication disorders) 5. Idiot (intellectual disabilities) 6. Imbecile (same as 5) 7. Lame (offends people who have mobility disabilities) 8. Stupid (same as 5) 9. Moron (same as 5) 10. Nuts (same as 5) 11. Psycho (same as 5) 12. Retarded (same as 5) 13. Special needs (an euphemism that is actually offensive. It's better to use the word "disabled") There are, of course, many other offensive expressions, unfortunately. But this list is just to give you an idea in hope to convince you be more careful with your words from now on.1 point -

Given I'm pretty sure I've contributed next to nowt of worth in my 18 months here, I'm frankly amazed I've gotten to 500 posts in the first place. Since joining the forums, I've read the grand total of 13 VNs (which is way more than I thought, sadly), learnt the basics of the Japanese language and apparently, not much else. Here's to the next worthless 500! / Just wanna ping a few people who have enriched my life since joining this place: @mitchhamilton - for being a beautiful human being And for pictures. Aw yee. @DarkZedge - for your tireless work in enriching lives with neko goodness. @Forgetful Frank - for making me think you were a new source of intelligent conversation to the world, and then comprehensively obliterating that misconception Also because you make me laugh on a daily basis. @Kaguya - for making the 'list of 50 translated VNs' list that I found on Google that drew me here initially, and for being a well-informed grounder of chats when things get a bit too bizarre. Also, a sincere thanks for snapping me out of my self-pitying hole around a year ago. @VirginSmasher - for discussions about technical death metal and deathcore, which is always a +1 in my book. @Kawasumi - for being one of the first people I recall having a chat with on here, and for having an incredible taste in music. @Arcadeotic - For your deadpan Finnish wit, immeasurable patience and appreciation that Tsumiki is indeed best girl, I stoop to you. @Fred the Barber - You either post something interesting or you post something that's funny, and that's good enough for me. Sorry for my constant avatar changing. @Dergonu - I had you pegged as a beautiful, pure yuri lover, and then look what happened You're glorious all the same though, and if you ever continue with your story, gimme a shout and I'll be happy to read through it! @KosakiFag - I suspect you may have actually been the very first person I properly conversed with on here, though to be honest my memory is shit. You've been a constant though, and a wonderful one at that. Also thank you for bringing Subway pr0n into my life, which will never cease to be hilarious. @HMN - for just being generally lovely. @Asonn - for just being generally salty. And lovely. @Flutterz - for being salty. And lovely. And for bringing moe into our lives. @Kiriririri - for being the moe in our lives. @madvanced - your linguistic prowess will likely never cease to amaze me. Also thank you for Nyoron, which is simply incredible. Shit, this was longer than I anticipated. Eris.Rafflesia reacted to Jun Inoue for a topic
Well, don't know what to tell you. I didn't really notice the animation regarding that being better or worse than any other show (generally). About exploring it being a fantasy... well, that depends on your take. Fantasy doesn't mean elves, dragons and stuff. KonoSuba simply has the whole demon king and skills, and I agree that it doesn't really go very deep. But I'll also insist that the show got just 10 episodes. 10 episodes to introduce the characters, world, and keep the comedy up since, before a fantasy or adventure, KonoSuba is a comedy. We'll probably see on S2 if we get more stuff on this world, especially since it seems things will happen outside of the initial city where they live. You didn't finish the show though, did you? Aqua does maintain her bratty attitude (and in the OVA, too), which I don't think is a spoiler to tell you. If there's one character that does suffer, it would be Darkness, I think. She doesn't get that much screen time and it tends to revolve all around her being a pervert and part of other jokes. But, in the end, KonoSuba is a comedy, and comedy is a genre that, well... it either works or does not. Maybe you didn't like it that much and, on the other hand, many people have it on their top 5 of anime in 2016. The most I could do, I think, is to recommend you a couple of videos of people talking about why they like KonoSuba. Maybe you'll see smth else in those videos to convince you?1 point -

Ironically, that's what happened to me with Momokuri. Loved the slice of life silliness and cuteness. Maybe it's a good thing, but I rarely notice animation quality issues in most shows. KonoSuba didn't seem any different to me compared to other shows; the only thing I found slightly weird is the design of the MC. He just looks... strange. The girls are all designed well, though, so I didn't really mind. I can understand why you wouldn't watch it, but I did find the comedy to be well executed so I kept watching just for that, I suppose. That episode where was probably the funniest. I'm not sure if I'll watch second season then, but I'm already half way through chronological order so I think I'll have to keep watching it like this now.1 point -

Not that I've tried it before, but something like that would be way too awkward for me, so I would advice against it . Furthermore, I don't think you actually have much space on the plane. Well, then it simply didn't work out. The animation is part of its charm (there's a difference between goofy and lazy, as seen in the plenty of times they go all out, for example when animating Megumin's explosions), and the characters one of its main selling points. There's obviously no storyline, though, as it's a comedy/slice-of-life, not an adventure. And the daily sequence of the first episode is what sold most people on the show. So if what made KonoSuba great made you yawn, there's not much to go on with =X1 point -
Offensive ableist expressions you are probably using on your daily life
Chronopolis reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
I agree with this... it is fine to avoid hurting someone's feelings within sane limits, but forced over-sensitivity causes resentment - and at times - conscious prejudice (as opposed to subconscious prejudice) in people who are otherwise easygoing and open-hearted. While I'm fine with avoiding subjects that are likely to offend a single group while speaking, I honestly don't think I should have to avoid that kind of thing while writing fiction or making a point in an essay. I've seen more than one relationship sour when one side insisted on the other being over-conscious of certain verbal limits. In addition, there is a big difference between actual prejudice and using language one side considers prejudicial. I'm fat and balding, and that in itself has lost me clients in the past, despite my proven skill level. That is prejudice that is built into society. However, I'm not about to take offense when someone says 'man that is one big fat airplane' or some kind of casual statement like that. I have psychological problems, but it doesn't bother me when someone describes the plot of a movie as 'crazy' or 'insane'. In other words, being bothered by words not directed at you intentionally that are built into language and into literary styles is a waste of time and energy better spent elsewhere. It's like complaining about the needle pricking your finger when someone is stabbing you repeatedly in the gut. You are missing the point entirely.1 point -
Offensive ableist expressions you are probably using on your daily life
Darklord Rooke reacted to Funyarinpa for a blog entry
I see the merit in avoiding certain terms (such as "retarded"), but you're taking it way too far. Words you falsely deem offensive enough to avoid are used very commonly in daily life to describe ordinary situations. Slept on your arm and it was" paralyzed" in the morning. Got out of a tunnel while driving and got momentarily "blinded" by sunlight. You can't hear the phone while in a stadium due to the crowd's "deafening" roar. You think "It was a 'stupid' move to spend my bus fare on Steam" as you walk home, because it was shortsighted/ nonsensical/ reckless/ a combination of these. As humans, we need both words that describe both situations humans can find themselves in and words describing human actions and behavior. This is where words you deem offensive come in. "Blind", "deaf", "idiot", "stupid"- It is possible to use these words without insinuating or implying ANYTHING about disabled people. I generally make a point of apologizing if I have inadvertently offended someone, but there's a logical extreme to which you can take that philosophy; there's nothing to be offended about in the daily usage of such terms unless you happen to take issue with the fact that people can momentarily lose their sense of sight or hearing. If we restrain ourselves in order to coddle people jumping at shadows, we stagnate the rational development of rational thought. There can be no compromise on the freedom of language (bar hate speech which these words are not), because any other way would lead to the dumbing down of thought. Not using words that indicate a circumstance of disability has no benefit unless you can't stand the fact that people can, and will, be reminded of their disabilities in daily life. I don't mean to condone ALL examples of such language, words like "retard" usually serve no purpose than to make light of clinical conditions for example and are as such words I'd rather not use, but do keep in mind that just because you can insult/offend someone using a word doesn't mean it has to be deemed offensive and avoided (like how we use knives in our kitchen even though other people use it to bring harm to people). Also, it easy to turn any word into an insult (e. g. literally all of sarcasm), so the criteria can't be "It cannot be used as an insult", either.1 point -
Readability And Eliminating Unintentional Ambiguity: That's Where It Starts
Funnerific reacted to Fred the Barber for a blog entry
Ambiguity is a fascinating element of language, one an editor both struggles with and celebrates regularly. On the celebration side of things, ambiguity is an essential tool in the setup of a lot of short jokes, for one. As an example, an ambiguous statement leads to a misunderstanding, and in a VN said misunderstanding usually leads to an accidental love confession, resulting in the unfortunate victim stammering outrageously while blushing like a sunset. How cute. Ambiguity can also be a powerful tool in foreshadowing, since it allows a single statement to be interpreted in two ways, of which one can be applicable to the immediate present, thus making it a perfectly reasonable line to have in the present, and the other only meaningful when considering future events, usually causing the reader to look back and say, "Ahh-hah, now I see what it really meant." Ambiguity is also absolutely essential in writing clever blog post titles. But on the struggling side, ambiguity is often an enemy getting in the way of your reader enjoying your text. As you read, your brain furiously analyzes words as they come in, building up and tearing down many possible syntactical structures for the sentence and many possible semantic interpretations of the various words and phrases, before eventually trimming this all down to a single interpretation of the sentence, typically over the course of a tiny fraction of a second. However, there are many stumbling blocks which can lengthen this process or thwart it entirely, notably including actual errors (misspellings, dropped words, incorrect grammar, etc.,), which is probably the chief reason why such errors are so frowned-upon in typical writing. Slowing down the reader's understanding, or preventing it entirely, is generally not the author's goal, assuming said author is not James Joyce. Setting aside actual errors, ambiguity is one of the main impediments to a reader's understanding. Since one of a VN editor's chief goals is to ensure a script flows well for a reader, eliminating unintentional ambiguity is an important sub-goal. Even outside of intentional usage like in the cases mentioned in the first paragraph, ambiguity in English is still incredibly common, with small ambiguities cropping up constantly while reading essentially any text. Let's take a look at an example of a super-small ambiguity which slows down the reader just a tiny bit, a sentence containing my least favorite word: Looks fine, right? As a whole the sentence is totally unambiguous. But while you're reading it, you're going to run into "that", and "that"'s a problem. "That" is an incredibly flexible word in the English language: it's a pronoun, a determiner, an adverb, and a relative pronoun. It's actually even more flexible in British English, where it can act as a subordinating conjunction, and even though most VN translations are written in American English, the lines there are pretty fuzzy, and it wouldn't be surprising or confusing to see a sentence like "He asked that she go" in a VN. Now, in the sentence above, "that" is being used as a relative pronoun, but the prefix of this sentence, "I told you that" is also a perfectly well-formed English sentence in which it's instead being used as a pronoun, and if your brain follows such an interpretation immediately as you read the sentence, it'll take it a few extra milliseconds for your brain to unwedge itself, reorganize into treating "that" as a relative pronoun, and continue on forming the correct interpretation. All right, doesn't sound like a big deal, does it? You're right. This particular, single instance isn't. But they add up, and you can do better, so you might as well. To put it in super technical jargon I didn't know until I was writing up this post, English has a so-called "zero relative pronoun" which can be used in place of relative pronouns like "that" which are introducing restrictive relative clauses. To give an example, since the previous jargon is so technical as to be basically useless, instead of the above sentence, you can just drop "that" and write: Now, look, I'm not saying this makes a huge difference, but doesn't this version feel a tiny bit better when you read it? Eliminating usage of overly-flexible words like "that" is a good way to reduce some ambiguity, but keep in mind this is a single example of a specific case. It just happened to be the one which prompted this blog post. However, I assure you, if you start reading your work with a careful eye out for the clarity of each line, you'll find tons of small, unintentional ambiguities popping out at you which you want to correct. Training yourself to look for them and to clean them up is one part of helping your text flow better. I guess that's that. I hope you got something out of that, and I ask that, if you have questions, comments, or problems regarding this or "that", you leave a note below to that effect.1 point -

Why is it so hard to simply police yourself to avoid some words? It won't hurt anyone, as opposed to keep on using them, which will actually hurt some people. Also, I'm pretty sure the intent, as you say, behind most of those words is almost never good. Stupid, retarded, mad, crazy, etc are almost always used as a form of insult or verbal attack.1 point -

Wait so if getting offended really is a choice, why would your sister or cousin get offended? And why would you get offended? Doesn't seem like you think it's a choice when it comes to your family. Kind of a double standard don't you think? I agree that it's pointless and I even mentioned it...1 point -

booo hoo, are you also blind, paraplegic and crazy? my sister has the mentality of an 8 year old because she was born way too early, and my cousin is confined to a wheelchair until the end of his short life. i couldnt care less how people use words that might offend them unless it was directed at them because like rooke pretty much said, its the intent behind the words not the words themselves. just as its pointless for him to post this stuff on fuwa where nothing will change because of it.1 point -

You're saying those people told you they were in a better or equal social position compared to able-bodied individuals? Comparing a lady with a bad odor with using a part of oppressed people's bodies with negative connotation is not a fair comparison. The latter is an attack that is personally harmful and reinforces the disadvantageous position some people have, and the former is a just small discomfort. @bigfatround0 made a pretty good comparison. @Darklord Rooke, what I'm trying to say here is that if you don't have to sacrifice much to avoid offending some people, then do so. There isn't much sacrifice in avoiding certain words. Noone will even notice, in case you care about your surroundings' opinions on you. So, if it will make some people feel better, why not do it? It's funny how you, in one paragraph, tells me how an 'insult' is different from an 'offense', implying that the former is always bad and the latter is sometimes just nitpicking; and, in another paragraph, you insist on using a word to insult people, claiming it's an "excellent descriptive word". What exactly are you implying here? That we should stop trying to eliminate ableism from our society because it's 'normal'? Or that we should do that, as we are in a position in which we are able to do so? I'm confused. Humans usually want to be equal to their surroundings. When everyday they see that they can't do a lot of tasks most people can, I don't think they won't feel "limited", at least to some extent. That's why my advice is to avoid those words not only around disabled people, but around everyone else as well. I'm mentally disabled, you know. I'm autistic. Thus, I'm not 'speaking for someone else'. Asterisks? What are you talking about? Don't see how trying to raise awareness for disabled people is considered being "liberal".1 point -

As I recall, you need to use Name Breaker to defeat Evolia (as explained in the scenario, that's the reason only Nozomu can defeat her). Name Breaker reduces the enemy's combat mana regen by 1, so if Evolia started the turn with 2 mana, then uses her healing defense skill to defend (2 mana), she'll start with 1 mana instead of 2 mana on the next turn. If she selects the healing defense skill on her next turn (which she will, if she's still low on HP), then it won't activate due to insufficient mana and the next attack will critical (and likely kill her). Evolia can accrue defense mana over the course of the battle; alternating Name Breaker and Nozomu's Eternal move (-1 mana to target) as necessary, without pushing her to miss a defense skill too early, can help prevent this.1 point -
Actually, this is how Japanese companies, anime or VN, have always behaved. Massively overpriced products with some extras thrown in, like a $0.15 CD of the music or a $0.50 16 page artbook, in an attempt to justify to price. It's so common, that's it's a really old joke that the more extra stuff a company puts into the release, the worse the game itself is going to be. To a certain extent, the fact that Kickstarter allows them to spell out what you get in tiers and Stretch Goals is nice, because it makes it more obvious and straightforward.1 point

Well, you shouldn't. First, because I'm not telling you how to conduct, I'm giving an advice so that you can make some people's lives better. Second, because, unless you are disabled, you're benefiting from your privilege within a society with institutionalized ableism. In other words, your situation is a hundred times better than those that are actually suffering.1 point -

Nowadays, verbal insults are the most common forms of aggression. Bullying, arguments, humiliation, all those usually come through verbal attacks. Sure, there are people who are less susceptible to it, but I don't know anyone who doesn't care or isn't emotionally affected at all by verbal attacks. If you don't, you are a very lucky person. Too bad other people aren't like you.1 point -

This is an introductory post and since I probably don't have to introduce myself anymore (you already know me ), I guess I advertise my future blog texts instead. Tyrviews are not reviews. Instead of writing reviews, I'm more interested in discussing and exploring the themes of an eroge and talking about all the related topics like the writing, the tropes or the history of eroge or the Japanese entertainment industry in general. I might also talk about anime, j-dorama, games, movies, books or JAVs. I'm sure you will find something new or interesting when you read my articles. You may not necessarily agree with what I have to say (and if you find the strong urge to comment, please do so, and you can be sure I will respond), but I'm certain you will find at least some new ideas worth thinking about. When I write about a certain topic I’m interested in, I'm often using specific products (which inspired me to think and write about this subject in the first place) and these will serve as an example to verify the points I make. With that said, unless I explicitly state that a Tyrview contains spoilers, it won’t. However, I might give away some directions a certain game will take. Nothing, you wouldn’t also find on the official website, but if you are like me and you would rather read an eroge without any a priori knowledge, it might be better if you come back later after you have finished the game in question. The first blog text will be about my favorite games of 2016. I also have an article about Black Cyc in the pipeline since I have recently finished most of their games and am now looking forward to their newest release this month. I will probably also write my impressions about some anime I recently watched which are worth talking about. If there is anything you would like me to write about or you want to read my opinion on something, I will be open to suggestions. I will end my introduction by showing you a picture of my bathroom, so you get some value out of this pointless blog post. Please rate it, I think it's pretty kuso which I've chosen as the theme for my toilet room. Do you get it? Thanks for tolerating me and happy new year~~1 point

All the skits in A2 are compiled in a single file, and it's fairly small -- only about 7kB long. To put this in perspective, the longest day in A2 (which is technically broken up into a couple scripts, but that's not too important) is a little under 70kB long, and the entire game is just under 1MB1 point

Review solidbatman
Fred the Barber reacted to Zakamutt for a topic
Review: solidbatman Pricing: free, regrettably Amount: way, way too much sometimes Ingredients: Salt, Quinine, Space Anime, Chili Extract, Hatred Nutritional information: not conventionally present, but stamped with unhealthy all over Additional packaging info: Made in the United Salt of America Environmental factors: Tried in multiple settings, like fuwa forums and his own discord chat. The solidbatman experience is not entirely unpleasant, but I can only recommend it to those with specialist tastes. Even then, you will spend an uncomfortable amount of time cringing whenever he does something stupid. At his best, solidbatman can be entertaining, with scintillating wit; however, most of the time he just comes off as salty and unable to handle people liking what he does not. All in all I will rate solidbatman a 7/10, polarity -3 / +2. He does not, IMHO, deserve a position in the hallmark of great people, but he's cool enough to be around that I usually don't regret it.1 point -
They won't. Oh, you won't. You have no idea. ^^ It's not as bad as Ever17, when almost every question was raised just before all the answers was presented - in the last few hours. FataMorgana opens itself slowly, but steadily, around 4th chapter onwards. And it's great.1 point
