What are your otaku/gamer/reader dreams for the next decade?
sarkasmus replied to Clephas's topic in General Discussion
Gaming: I hope PC to play a bigger role for games from the jap. region, aside from VNs too as I try to get away from consoles again. At the AAA market I wouldn't even know where to begin, but I would hope for Live service and MP-focus in formerly SP-focused games to completely disappear if that were realistic. Anime: More complete stories would be nice.... VN: I really miss big, VNs with a "heavy" story (I can't find a better term). There still are good ones, but somehow I get the feeling that most of them are currently too short and/or shallow. I hope that changes at some point. -
High-school heroines getting less appealing as you get older?
sarkasmus replied to onorub's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Or missing the own youth? It seems to be the case for many men which they try to compensate it that way. There might be an intersection though. -

At the current point of time no, I'm only 26 though. And as I love to escape into daydreams because my real life sucks (screwed up my attempt to study physics now being an incredibly bored Elekctronics technician, over time lost contact to every single one of my friends and being both too shy and boring to make new ones, I'm looking forward to a very lonely and forgettable life...) and I really miss the days when I was still a bit more naive and idialistic, so I'll probably always like settings like that. -
Recent (Japanese) Things You Have Purchased
sarkasmus replied to Tatsujin's topic in Members' Lounge
It finally arrived (it was stuck in customs since November), nothing will get me outside for the fireworks tonight. -
Not sure about that 1$ offer, if it's a subscription I'd even rather use epic. Besides, can you even use the MS Store on W7? I'll have W10 on my new PC around next year but until then I won't change a running system especially since W10 regulary overwrites third party bootloaders with its updates.

Isn't it still just an Epic-Key? I never heard of them having an own Launcher and I can't imagine them selling a DRM-free installer. It's not just about my payment information or supporting Epic in any way, I don't want their Launcher on my PC.
-
I'd love to play it, but I'm waiting for the Steam release, as I hate Epic (even steam is only a necessary evil to me) and want to get away from console (For various reasons, one being that I realized how much the trophy system in the way it's made harmed the enjoyment I get from a game).

Currently I'm only playing the Date a Live VN, it's surprisingly enjoyable and nice for practicing japanese (I'm really glad more and more games include the original text).

I don't think you can pin down the piracy issue to a single reason, it's a combination of multiple ones. There are general problems: -The demographic most of the VNs are aimed at is one of course, young poeple tend to have less money. -the negative reception towards VNs (some people don't want other to know they're playing them and thus don't want them standing on their Shelves or their Steam account) -an oversaturated market in some subgenres -a lot of trash- or low-effort-VNs release alongside the good ones -sometimes translations of a low quality which aren't seen as being worth the money There are also issues depending on the country: -legal risks -average-wage-price-ratio -avaiability (because one of the upper 2 or credit cards being not as far spread which locks you out of many stores)

Cliches in VN's You Wish Would Just Die!
sarkasmus replied to mitchhamilton's topic in General Discussion
The only one that really annoys me is the useless MC, why is this one so common anyway? Just because they're easier to write (it's easier to make someone universally incompetent having problems/doubts/whatever without contradicting his/her character)? Other parts of VNs it don't like aren't common enough to call them cliches (like open endings). -
What's your favorite platform to play visual novels?
sarkasmus replied to ztrepzilius's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Even before Sony's new regulations I mainly played them on PC simply because many of them weren't avaiable on console (or only as a censored version). In Addition to that, the PC is my main gaming plattform with the consoles only being used for exclusives or bad ports (or unacceptable DRM), so I'm using it for VNs as well. Aside from that I played some VNs on PSV because it's portable and my only Laptop runs on an old Linux OS. -
How many do you play at once, if any?
sarkasmus replied to PrincessOfFinch's topic in Visual Novel Talk
During the last years I barely had the time to read one VN. So multiple ones are just impossible. Before that I didn't know about VN so I can't give a number for times when I'm not that busy, maybe 2? If I mangage to screw up one of the current exams I can tell you in about a month. -
Suki Suki aka If You Love Me Then Say So Released
sarkasmus replied to littleshogun's topic in Visual Novel Talk
I'd say bringing across those differences without relying ont he reader knowing honorifics and still making it sound natural is what indicates a excellent translation. That being said, before you change it to something completely else (meaning leaving out such nuances or adding parts which just don't fit there, because you're not good enough of a translater to make an excellent localization) you should just keep them because it usually sounds less off than what it's replaced with in such cases ("dude", "insert spanish text here"). Though it's still more acceptable than completely changing personalites or adding your own puns for no reason, just for the record. (yes I'm talking to you BNE, SE and NISA) -
Does empathy count as a personal feeling? It's necessary to enjoy any character focused story in the first place after all. Aside from that when I played, watched or read something there weren't any deeper feelings involved (I think. I probably wouldn't notice even if it were the case). Wishing a character would exist in RL or the feeling of wnating to swap roles with the Protagonist is in my opinion not necessarily connected to that though.

Yes, I barely slept at all the week before and was on the verge of collapsing at the time. I had to prepare a presentation in crystallography and make corrections on weekend on short notice which increased my workload to about 17 hours per day for 1 week there was no time for sleep.
-
I basically slept through the whole event, I accidentally fell asleep at 14:00 and woke up the next day at 12:00 when everything was over (where I live the "main event" is at the evening of 24th december).

I don't like it when the text is covering the whole screen. It's a visual novel, what's the point in it if you can't properly enjoy the supporting visuals. In that case I might as well read normal books (which I do as well, and they're cheaper, and they're more easily avaiable, but they're not what I'm looking for when I start a VN).

Suki Suki aka If You Love Me Then Say So Released
sarkasmus replied to littleshogun's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Is there a full walkthrough for this VN somewhere, it can be a japanese untranslated one for all I care. Which genius thought it was a good idea to release this without one? -
I think that's part of it, but I'd say it's less a getting used to and more a (subconscious) habit of comparing media in that artstyle with each other rather than real world examples, making you differ between age differently than you would in real life. That is if you guess the age by look, which even in real life is something I'd advise against. I've met 60 year olds who look like 30 (one of my former teachers) and knew a 20 year old who looked like 11 (some genetic anomaly, I don't remember the medical term) and on a daily basis I see 20-25 year olds who look like ~14 to me (similar to tha anime/RL comparison a difference in perception, I'm pretty sure asian people would guess their age correctly). But that's what most people do, so they try to apply it on media in different Artstyle. The other part its that a lot of people who aren't familiar with the Artstyle still have prejudices against it and bacause of that are searching for signs that match their opinion about it and if you search for it you find it, both in fictional media and RL and no matter the topic. Basically: You see/read/hear what you want to see/read/hear.

A small correction here. I don't know about the rest of the EU but in germany the pose is not equal child pornography. The USK consideres it a harmful to minors which is why they refuse the rating and the game can be put on the index by the BPJM which is what happened with the last games that was the case (purchaseing and owning is still completely legal as long as you're 18+), if it were considered a actual child porn there would be a request to the court to decide if the game is needed to be banned.

To Fuwa-Males Out There: Do You Play Otome?
sarkasmus replied to LemiusK's topic in Visual Novel Talk
I read a few, mainly on my PSV, and enjoyed them. But (and maybe I just had bad luck with which ones I chose to read), I was really annoyed how weak and fragile the female protagonist tends to be portrayed. If that weren't the case, and I'm open for recommondations if you know one without that problem (doesn't need to be a badass female character, though that would be even better, way better, just a normal not excessivly pathetic one), I would enjoy them just as much as the usual ones. -
Do You Prefer Happy Endings Or Bittersweet/More Realistic Endings?
sarkasmus replied to LemiusK's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Downright depressing ones aren't exactly my favorite, but aside from that I don't mind either one. I need a bit variety between different games though, I'm not always in the mood for something happy and not always for something sad. And after a sad one I usually need to play a happy one so I don't feel depressed the next 3-4 days. -
It's not just VNs which are affected though, while not outright pohibiting them (yet) Sony targets about any japanese game with fanservice in it. And unfortuantly those are usually poorly ported and/or littered with intrusive DRM on PC (which was one of my 2 main reasons to buy a Console in the first place). At this point I wouldn't even be surprised if they were stupid enough to go after the bigger japanese focused publishers' games like Bandai Namco, Sega or Atlus later on (though I almost hope they do, it might finally lead to the backlash Sony deserves).
