Two schools of thought on that, mainly because the most accurate translations are incredibly disjointed and hard to read. But the idea that translators shouldn't censor is a reasonable one. EDIT: I'm still of the opinion that if a fan-translator doesn't wish to translate them, then that is perfectly acceptable.
-
Yeah, I'm trying to figure out when the discussion turned to 'cutting' H-scenes, seeing as it was originally about translators leaving them untranslated. But I've got a headache and a neckache right now, and thinking hurts so...
-
The topic was split from another thread ... probably a little poorly. The discussion in another topic descended into a discussion on whether H-Scenes should be TRANSLATED, but for some reason it was titled as cut. Meh *shrugs*
-
If the fan translation community had respect for the authors, they'd listen to the requests NOT to fan-tl their works, and/or buy the game instead of pirating the crap out of it. It's a little bit cringe-worthy whenever the idea of 'respecting the authors' get brought up in these environments. Anyway, wasn't the original complaint that some translators were not translating H-scenes? When did the discussion turn to censorship of H-scenes?

That's an excellent point. There's a lot of hate these days aimed at translators and creators in general. A little bit of entitlement I think, a little bit of intolerance, people used to be grateful for anything they got, now if things aren't perfect people start hating or raging. Makes me sad, makes me irritated. And your point about the translations most likely being finished by someone else via a restoration patch is well made.
-
If, as you say, the decision to leave H-scenes untranslated is a recent trend, then these groups most likely haven't had time to finish their translations. This would most likely be the reason you haven't seen any completed translations, not because groups which omit h-scenes are 'half-assed' or 'lack will.' There's a very famous translator in literature circles who used to omit sentences which she found too difficult, and she managed to translate over 60 novels (I think) in her life. Not exactly a person you'd describe as 'lacking determination', and she was a very serious translator indeed. On a personal note the trend doesn't really bother me. I find h-scenes long and boring anyway.

I don't deny any of this, but I do believe you're missing the point of Down's thread Steve. The point of Down's thread was to limit the number of identical recommendation threads appearing, which is what happens when you get multiple threads which are the same. Not bad when you get 1 or 2, annoying when you get 4 or 5 starting to appear. Down was on the ball and posted that thread to preempt the front page filling up with this. A number of people list the VNs/animes they have watched so people won't recommend things they've already seen. Thinking the thread starter wants VNs similar to the ones listed is an assumption you cannot make from the information available. You mean a dude with a small list has a lot of titles which belong to the genre with the most number of translated VNs (beside Nukige)? I'm not sure how I'm supposed to respond to this... His sample size is too small to attribute this to a deliberate style he's after. Especially considering charage dominate translated, plot-related VNs.
-
Firstly, you're making a key assumption, and that is that he LIKES everything he has read. If you reread the opening post you'll find he hasn't said anything at all. Secondly, you are making the assumption that he is looking for something similar, and not trying to expand the genres he is reading. Thirdly, your list of criteria isn't something you can call a list at all. A 'well made story' is completely subjective, character development is in EVERY VN. Congratulations Steve, you've limited the number of VNs available to every VN ever translated... that has moe girls. A stunning accomplishment. Fourthly, recommendation threads work best if the thread starter has a SPECIFIC list of characteristics he/she is looking for. If he/she doesn't specify, people will just charge on the thread chucking their favourite VNs at them. And while that may be what the thread starter is looking for, you can make a LIST of these VNS and LINK THEM TO IT when they ask. That will save the same thread happening again and again ad nauseum. ..... Oh look, that's what Down suggested.
-
At least wait for the dude to reply before spruking your favourite VNs, Steve. EDIT: Oh wait, it's a general recommendation thread. I misread the opening quote. Just ignore me, please continue.
-
You should consult the lists mentioned in this thread. They're fairly comprehensive https://forums.fuwanovel.net/index.php?/topic/4965-recommendations-read-before-asking/

Little Busters! Why is it worth playing?
Darklord Rooke replied to crunchytaco's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Those are my thoughts as well. -
People enjoy Sengoku Rance for the solid Turn-based Strategy gameplay. The story bits are just icing on the cake for some, or bits to ignore for others. It's like Kamidori, the story was terrible but people play it for the gameplay. Both aren't actually VNs, but people choose to call them such so I suppose we should go with the flow. Dating sim elements.

What Video Games Are You Playing Right Now?
Darklord Rooke replied to solidbatman's topic in Gaming Talk
XCOM. I wish there were more games like it *patiently waits for Warmachine Tactics and Steam Squad* -
Indie VN Icebound. I've been pleasantly surprised by this game, the writing is GOOD, the humour is actually pretty funny, and I have no problems with the art. Definitely worth the 15 dollars they want for the game.

Are Visual Novels considered as dating sims?
Darklord Rooke replied to AMMSY's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Not many dating sims are translated from Japan. True Love is a classic. Persona 3, Persona 4 and Sakura Wars are RPGs with Dating Sim elements. Shira Oka is a good English made Dating Sim, and so are Roommates and Nicole by Winterwolves. -
Too bad they DIDN'T actually make it a random talk thread, as can be seen by the title, and the opening post. I'm more pissed at the mods than I am pissed at you guys, don't worry. I think Fuwa's drifting, it has lost direction and purpose and it's just becoming a place to chat and hang out. It was supposed to be much more, and let's just say I wish Tay all the best and wish him all the best in his life but I miss him and his driving force. As I miss Nay, Mayumi, and Aaeru. And concerning G&C: You say that like that opinion has never been reached before.

If it doesn't add anything to the forum, it's value can definitely be questioned by the community. Maef didn't post anything antagonistic, I've been far more antagonistic than he has. He's actually a pretty decent guy, me... not so much. Furthermore, the Majikoi thread is full of off-topic responses which is against the rules. EXPLICITLY against the rules. The mods should have taken action long ago, and sticking a 'AKA random talk' doesn't solve the problem.
-
The way I understand it, the thread was created for the purpose of asking about the Majikoi route. Someone wanted information about the Majikoi route, that the team did or did not have to reply to. This doesn't give you license to derail the thread with utter randomness once a question has been answered. If the team wants a randomness thread, create your own thread, call it the 'Majikoi team's thread of complete and utter randomness. We are active, and on Fuwa, just in case you're curious,' but that thread had a purpose, it was for information about Majikoi, people who wanted information about Majikoi may want to READ THROUGH THE THREAD for past answers, but now the purpose of that thread has been completely annihilated.

Talk of Yaoi adheres to the purpose of the forum, so it's a matter of 'you'll have to tolerate it'. Spam does not adhere to the purpose of the forum, so it's perfectly acceptable to question its purpose. As for the AMA, the PURPOSE of the AMA's is to better acquaint the forum with the individuals. Therefore it belongs in Introduce Yourself. It doesn't matter how much banter is in there, which is also present in the Introduction threads by the way.
-
... I usually skim the pages looking for progress . Not yours obviously, I just assume its stalled *shrugs*. As a person who does look for information, and has little patience (normally) for randomness, I don't usually go to yours. It's in G&C, it's got random talk in the title, that screams to me that it's no longer ongoing. I usually like to fish extra bits of information about the game or route out of the thread, but I can't. So I avoid it. Maybe I'm a freakish individual and am the only person in the world like this, but my gut says I'm not. I have no idea why you won't separate the information out from the random banter, it's as if you want to make things difficult for everybody. As someone who's only after information, I gloss over it. The thread I mean.
-
Spam attracts spammers. Sometimes you'll get people who want information and like to spam. For people who just want information, it's a deterrent. The guy I saw made 2 posts, his last one being "Well it may be fun for the people talking.... but I assure you for the people who just want updates on the translation its not fun looking through over 100 pages of this. As the mod pointed out you guys should talk on irc or something." Which is very sensible. And while it's admirable for you to take the concerns of regular visitors on board, you are forgetting that people who solely want information won't become regular visitors. I dislike the thread too. Make it a random banter thread, or a translation thread. The hybrid you have currently is hella annoying.

People are free to make any judgements they like upon anything which does or does not affect them or their experiences. They are under no obligation to follow any moral code you have established for yourself (which sounds like an admirable one, btw). Discussing amendments to the rules concerning what should and should not be allowed has to be a part of any healthy community; only allowing praise for the community, and shovelling all the negative comments out of sight is not good. Too many places are ruined by over or undermoderating, and constant feedback (from outside the moderator bubble) is a decent way to prevent that. Especially considering the founder of this project is no longer with us, and Fuwanovel is starting to move away from what she wanted in the first place. I have had a number of people say to me how excited they were when Fuwa was just starting, but they no longer feel so enthusiastic about the project. I also am no longer as enthused as I once was. It's still a good place to chat, but Fuwa was created with so much more in mind. I think that it's good that somebody has finally started to express their concerns. I want to go further, but what I have to say is much harsher than what Maef has said, and probably a tad unjustified, so I'll keep it between myself and some acquaintances. It is not a commonly followed practice to check the 1st post of the thread for updates. It is done, but it shouldn't be assumed 'general knowledge'. You should find a way to communicate that to the people looking for information. Ideally, because there's so much stuff in there that information is lost, you should include that in the title, but somebody's tacked a 'RANDOM TALK' on there as well. From what I saw of the thread, and from what I saw the last time someone asked a question (where they got a non-detailed answer, and a comment that the question had been asked before) people may feel a little intimidated leaping in to ask. I may be wrong there though, I certainly don't frequent the thread often. If the decision was to turn it into a random banter thread, it should have been completely turned into a random banter thread. Why's it still named a translation thread then? With all the information concerning the translation still inside? It means anybody who wants information has to brave the 'random banter' thread. Half-arsed, half-implemented solution. The ideal solution would have been to SEPARATE the banter from the information and create 2 threads, but the mods sat on their hands for so damn long the thread became 100 pages, and they probably thought 'fuck no, I ain't doing it.' I don't like how it's six of one, half a dozen of another. It's not quite a random banter thread, and it's still sorta a translation thread. And I'd like to make a short addition to a comment I made earlier. I'm looking at a dictionary reference and I'm seeing the word 'introduce' defined as 'present a person so as to make acquainted' etc etc. Is this not what the AMA's are doing? Why are they not in 'Introduce Yourself'?
