Are Visual Novels Growing in the West/Other Countries?
novurdim replied to aliciarune's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Ignoring the fact that you should take anything Nier says with a grain of salt and assuming he is right, 6.5k for the first week is pretty darn far from terrible for a VN on the western market. I don't know what expectations VA had for it after Clannad but I wish the general VN sales in the west could let us consider this a bad number. -

Wait, since when LB sold really badly by the western standards -
Irotoridori Kickstarter by Sol Press Funded at over 85k
novurdim replied to yelsha57's topic in Visual Novel Talk
All speculation is meaningless at this point, not to mention that usually no kickstarter fully covers the licensing fees, they are higher than you think. it could very well be that Sol Press is stretched too thin already and/or in considerable financial distraught, especially when you look at the status of their ln/manga titles, so they simply might want to cover more of the expenses with this KS. 200k+ goal is not really a definite indication that Favorite's fees are extremely high when compared to other bigger pubs. -
Is it worth it to buy vita for playing visual novel?
novurdim replied to Prideful's topic in General Discussion
There are even less translated VNs on switch though. At least yet, and it's not like the gap is closing that fast. Untranslated too. If you want to buy switch for reading VNs in english, you can confidently wait for at least several more years, there's not much of a market in the west yet. Also should be noted that this is true only for the utranslated ones. On the english market it's only, like, Muv-Luv, soon-to-be Dies Irae (and amantes is not really just eroge with sex cut out)... Sharin no Kuni? -
Is it worth it to buy vita for playing visual novel?
novurdim replied to Prideful's topic in General Discussion
I'd say, just look up the list of vita's translated VNs and decide. The choice is relatively limited but I do enjoy playing VNs on vita immensely more than on PC/PS4/Switch. So the only question is whether there's enough stuff on it to justify the purchase for you. -

It was a joke post about how there was never a released fan translation of IroSeka (except a dropped prologue in 2015) and will never be so his words make basically no sense in this situation. But I quickly realised it was very poorly worded and edited it a literal minute later, you were just lightning fast. I beg your pardon. -

Hello Good Bye English Release (January 25th)
novurdim replied to littleshogun's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Finished May's route. Can't say I like it all that much. In short, May herself is fine, even though her personality is bit too simplistic and one-sided so it's hard for her to carry the SoL parts without the support of other heroines, but the story is pretty eh. Not sure if I want to play the other routes, to be honest. Does is it get considerably better and more intelligible? -

So the whole trilogy's goal is bigger than Grisaia's by a whooping 55k and even the sequel is locked under 170k. I foresee a lot of anger when they only localize the first game and then drop the others because its sales aren't amazing lol -

Yeah, I expect that even 100k will be a close call, let alone 200k. I hope the goals are sensible. -
Because Sony doesn't have regional pricing and PS games in Rus are often even more pricey than in US somehow. And they still sell, russian distributors aren't bankrupt, Russia is still a relatively important market to Sony, a lot of games are dubbed in russian. Same with Nintendo. If you have it that bad then I sympathize with your situation but your generalized descriptions are extremely over the top, some are borderline crazy. I don't earn as much when compared to some of my peers and still can afford console games and VNs on a regular basis. It's like you are talking about Burundi (and I am very sorry for being rude to burundians). Can't say I'm very active in any communities but from what I see they are generally the same for both russian- and english-speaking crowds. True, VNs aren't exactly very popular in Russia but it's not like VNs are often officially translated in any other language than english or chinese for obvious reasons. And it's not because they are too expensive, they are just not popular enough, it's a very niche entertainment. There are still some decent jp-rus fan-translators who are clearly loved by the people, have literally never seen anyone running around blaming them for the translation. What is that even supposed to mean? Like that guy on twitter who blames eng translations for tainting his kamiges? lol I'm not sure what was your point and by now I don't even know why I'm having this weird conversation. But I do recommend you to stop this whole "you are all so rich, i'm so shocked noone bought subahibi" shtick, it's uncomfortable to even look at.

God will anything good be translated soon?
novurdim replied to CarouselRose's topic in Visual Novel Talk
yeah, since kana is exactly the biggest obstacle on the way of reading visual novels in their native language. -
God will anything good be translated soon?
novurdim replied to CarouselRose's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Ya know, it's completely fine to complain about the english scene even if you simply have no desire to learn the language right now, loving VNs and not learning yet another lang to read them are not contradictory things in the slightest. Ridiculous that people even have to make excuses why they don't learn japanese yet every time some localization team fails at their job. The "time to learn japanese" meme is but a mockery at this point. Not many people would do something that demands such a serious dedication for the sake of light entertainment. I actually had an interesting conversation on a similar topic with a friend who did manage to learn japanese after quite some time and now rarely reads visual novels. He says that since learning japanese takes quite a lot of effort for most people, in the end they start feeling that reading translated novels is something akin to cheating and get this perverse desire to force others go through the same things, make a serious effort to enjoy the medium. If they persevered why shouldn't the others just do the same? At first such logic sounded absurd but now I feel like some people at fuwa are dead set on proving his point to me -
9-nine-:Episode 1 coming January 31st

I have very mixed feelings about the "dude" one, do we seriously have to make such a horrible localization choice (that can only be adequately used in the extremely rare occasions) mainstream... God help us. -

novurdim replied to CarouselRose's topic in Visual Novel Talk
If this are the examples of "good" then yes, plenty? Irotoridori is even literally from the same company that did Hoshizora EH. Nandemonai's list is pretty good, though I'd personally also add Hello Lady to it. I've also heard good things about Byakko. But admittedly it does feel like there'll be less and less interesting high-profile releases going forward. -
Nora to Oujo to Noraneko Heart English Release
novurdim replied to Antera's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Yeah, everything points to the steam-only release so no 18+ in sight. It's possible they were waiting for the japanese PS4-ver. to use its assets so that's why it got delayed for so long? Maybe? I'm also ready to see that "sony enhanced" art too, they didn't redraw all those panty-shots for nothing. -
Hello Good Bye English Release (January 25th)
novurdim replied to littleshogun's topic in Visual Novel Talk
After buying a whole bunch but not playing through a single eroge in 2018 (except trotting a bit into Evenicle) I decided to challenge myself to at least give a try to every major release of 2019! The grand eroge resurrection plan! Go me! I'm sorry 2018. Darn, I hope I'll have enough time for this... Reality fast forwards to HGB. Played till the Opening for now and (hooray!) it does get intriguing after the prologue. Guess at the very least I'll see how it goes from there and finish the first route. Don't get me wrong, May is a cute little buddha and other girls range from fine to tolerable but the game was just so painfully incompetent as a spy story. And not even in a "so bad it's good" way for me. If the relaxing but utterly uninspiring slice-of-moege continued for another several hours, I'd probably just switch to 9-nine-. Hopefully it'll get livelier with its new theme, the initial disposition doesn't seem too bad at least. -
Your opinion on them doesn't matter though? Neither KoiKuma nor Maitetsu are all that short or low-key. With a logic like this I could say that even MG didn't release any games for almost a year and choose something that interested me from a year ago. Everything else is boring to read for me so they must be going bankrupt! Though I do hope Sekai will do a much, much, MUUUUUCH better job next year, gosh

I probably won't play either, but the Senren Banka announcement is hilarious. I don't even remember another time when a VN-license changed hands just like that.

Suki Suki aka If You Love Me Then Say So Released
novurdim replied to littleshogun's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Well, that's the point, but in case of FF they can at least say that they are tirelessly adapting the script so that even your typical american mama can play the game, while there's little point of doing the same with a medium as niche and culturally fetishized as eroge. Though I often see that FF XII is considered one of the best game translations among our VN-translators. -
Suki Suki aka If You Love Me Then Say So Released
novurdim replied to littleshogun's topic in Visual Novel Talk
I may not agree with everything but it looks like they are aiming for a translation that is at the same time good and caters to the target audience of the medium. Unfortunately, nowadays VN-translators are mostly former fan-translators who are very inspired by the fact that they are now being paid for their work. As a result they are thoughtlessly and often unsuccessfully trying to imitate the "professional work for the most mainstream audience" as if they are translating a new Final Fantasy game but their skill is yet to reach the level where they could do it seamlessly and without stubborn and jarring decisions on the way. Don't maul me. -
Nah, I'm sure we'll see Dracu-Riot next year. Tenshin Ranman on the other hand...
