Oh yeah, definitely. Catholicism ideology with respect to sexuality is way more restrictive than the one found in other cultures, that's for sure. What I meant is that that strict mindset itself that arouse in this particular religion is but a consequence of that psycological inclination that surfaces slightly different (or arguably sometimes at all) in different cultures. Ha, they had us putting them on a banana Go figure. Yep, I totally agree that it would be phenomenal is such topics could be addressed naturally; but as it is, I think the only way to make teenagers take it seriously and not laugh it off is to approach it as all the other sciences in school. It is my hope that once they are well aware of why they should be concerned about the topic, they will research the needed information for practical usage in due time. Maybe not, and I'm too optimistic, but that'd be my best bet.

Correlation between immaturity and japanese media liking

As for that, I'm supportive of the biology approach. You don't achieve much more than ackwardness and shy laughs if you attempt to teach teenagers how to put on a condom, tbh (I know that from experience, since that's what happened when I was in middle-school). I think it's much more productive to teach them what STDs are from a microbiology point of view (the same way you would teach what the influenza virus is and how it spreads), how fecundation works and the steps of the whole process. The more "practical" information is very accessible nowadays. Making them conscious of the risks from a scientific and strictly formal point of view should be good enough (or at least better than the alternative...).

First of all I'd like to address the issue of shyness and shame. I've been reading in this topic that some people attribute western culture and religion an effect in the japanese mentality. I beg to differ. While it's undeniably the case that sex is a taboo in the catholic religion, I believe it's a symptom rather than a cause. It can't be coincidental that in the great majority of cultures on earth, as isolated as they might be, people show shame and cover up their genitals. What's more, if you analyze language, you see that it's almost a universal that a big part of the insults and derogatory terms come from the words for sexual organs or the action of sexual intercourse (probably the second most frequent origin, following scatological procedence) . That goes to show that there's some psycological trait in human beings that links sex with shame and filthiness. Why is this? I have no idea. There's probably some darwinian reason, but I personally don't know. Perhaps some biologist here can shed some light on this? Anyway, regarding the sex ed banning in Japan... it saddens me. The severe effects of desinformation are very concerning, of course, but even beyond that, it's obvious that avoiding the topic so blatantly does not any good at all nor leads to a process of normalization of what should be regarded as a normal physiological human behaviour, such as eating or sleeping. It might be true that there's something in our psyche that generates that inclination, but the same could be said about xenophobia, and yet we still try to fight it with reason and science and do our best to erradicate it. We humans are always so proud to claim that we overcame our natural instincts with our mind. Well, failing to acknowledge sex education as something as serious and relevant for our life as nutritional information could be is definitely a step in the wrong direction.

I couldn't agree more with the negativity and elitism issue in other forums. It's been a long time since I felt so comfortable in a forum. Fuwa is a truly warm place. And that's my confession btw.

It's not like we wanted to have you here or anything... b-baka (now THAT'S generic) Welcome to Fuwa! Hope you enjoy your stay

Well, I for one believe that those kind of endings can still be pretty fulfilling. I do understand that's not what he's looking for, and I have to respect that.. but in VN terminology, there is a line, fine though it might be, between nakige and utsuge. Sad and satisfying endings DO exist, even though both qualities are mostly subjective, but at least in one person's mind both can coexist I'll suggest Shinsekai Yori. It has not exactly a happy ending... but it's satisfying in a way in its own right. It really makes you think and concludes the story majestically. It's not that it's incredibly sad either, so I think it might be fitting... though I dunno, I'm one of those utsuge fuckers who wallow in sadness, so take any recommendation from me with a grain of salt.

Oh I wasn't exactly referring to the tone, but the style. MLA is pretty dense, with a lot of info constantly thrown to your face what with military strategies and stuff Yep! I read Grisaia and someone told me that Yuuji was based on the MC from Sharin no Kuni. More Yuuji is always good. I actually waited for a while, but I'm getting impatient! Plus as long as the fan translation isn't terrible... It's not like the official translation is guaranteed to be better anyway

I wish I could ban myself -
MuvLuv Alternative finished! Gosh, what a rollercoaster it's been. It's gonna be hard to put into words, and the current state of the forums doesn't help either Actually I think I'll edit this post when it's back to normal. Writing like this is torture. EDIT: Ok, here we go! Well, and that's it. And as always, thank you all so much for being there to exchange thoughts and impressions. It definitely makes this all the more enjoyable I think I'll be reading Sharin no Kuni next for a change of pace. I feel like reading something lighter now, after all the info dumping that has MLA

Lol that's a pretty original one. I was wondering who the fuck changed fuwa to arabic format

I mean, it's not lighthearted at all, but it's still good I first read it because people recommended it to me as a romance VN, and while I didn't wind up finding much romance (just a tiny bit, not the focus of the story by any means), I can't say I regret reading it at all either, so... I'm probably the worst person to ask for lighthearted stuff as everything I like tends to be heavy and depressing af, but I guess you could try Little Busters, if you haven't read it already. Sure, it's a KEY VN and it gets sad towards the end, and well, it also has its share of heavy moments here and there throughout the routes... but I would say that until you get to Refrain it's mostly as lighthearted a slice of life as it gets.

Well then, this is the penultimate post I'll write about MLA. The next one will be once I actually finish it in order to give my final thoughts. I think I should have around 5 or 6 more hours left to go.
-
So I'm at episode 9 of MLA, and I think it deserves to pause for a minute and appreciate how amazing the wordbuilding is and how much care for detail they poured into it. And I'm not only referring to the technical details (leaving aside the quantum bullshit, that is ), which of course are important, but in my opinion less so than the true gem that is the society it builds. It's so damn realistic that it legit scares me. In the spoiler I'm going to elaborate on this a little. It's not going to contain major spoilers, but if you prefer reading MLA totally blind then it's probably for the best if you avoided it. So yeah. The social behaviour in MLA is not original because it doesn't need to be. It's instead a really accurate picture of our history and ourselves.

While it's true that Sachi's route is romance oriented, I'd also keep in mind that it's fairly philosofical, not your typical romance story. You'll have plenty of heart-warming moments nonetheless, so if that's what you are looking for you should be satisfied. If you can only read 1 route for now I'd recommend either Sachi's or Michiru's. Why? Because Amane and Makina's routes share some plot commonalities and it's probably for the best if you read them one after another. It's not that it's TOO important, but as a standalone route Sachi and Michiru work better imo. In Michiru's route you will barely find any romance, at least in comparison with the rest. That said, if you are fond of her character I believe you will really enjoy her route. I mean, even people who hated her at first came to love her after reading her route.

Katawa was one of (if not) the first VNs I played, and to this day I still think it's overall pretty solid, albeit not spectacular. It receives a lot of unjustified hatred though for being a OELVN and a very popular one at that, but I think the fact still remains that its quality is above average. Have fun with it. Which route are you at atm and which is your favorite from what you've already read? As for another good OELVN, I think it's warranted to summon @Plk_Lesiak, our expert on the topic Over here I'm still on the wild ride of MuvLuv Alternative, growing increasingly convinced that this VN is trying to kill me.
-
Oh, no no, don't you guys worry, that's no more of a spoiler than simply knowing what genre I am reading. And sure enough, I would have never made it to Alternative if I thought everything was like Extra, and so far I'm really enjoying the journey, so I have to thank you for that. You especially, Dreamy, being the one who convinced me to give it a try.
-
Oh yeah, thanks... that's music to my ears It's a really impactful scene, no doubt about it, but I dunno, it didn't quite make me sick and I don't think I'll have any problems sleeping at night. Perhaps I already became insensitive to this kind of stuff? Or perhaps it's just that I did expect something like that to happen. I mean, not precisely THAT, but since everybody talks about how shocking MuvLuv is I assumed some shit like that was coming. Whatever, I'll probably have to swallow my words in the near future, so I'd better say no more

Muv-Luv Alternative heavy spoilers, warning:
