I was born in Portugal, and consequently, I haven't learnt such a word at school, or it's meaning. I have to rely on what I hear orally and in dictionaries, and that particular dictionary I used led me to believe slander can be either way. If you intend to deny it, then go right ahead, because I'll always trust your word over a dictionary. (The dictionary I used was Google, no idea how veridical or accurate it is) Then, basically, in summary, you used that tactic. The only thing you did was provide an explanation as to why you did so.
