  1. To avoid path length issues, try extracting the game to a folder directly off the root of the drive e.g. C:\HoshizoraNoMemoria\
  2. VMs will also work for most as they are mostly nowhere near as graphics-intensive as a 3D game.
  3. Or put another way, if you can't figure out the tiny example he used, then you'll be even more lost when it comes to the real thing.
  4. Just to rule out any filesystem corruption, do a chkdsk.
  5. What isn't mentioned is that almost all VN engines are going to be approximately 10-100x bigger and more complex than the toy example used, and making random changes to files is not going to be very productive in understanding (even ignoring things like encryption and compression.) Don't look at the data files any longer than necessary to check that it isn't in some stupidly obvious format (again, the result of this check is going to be negative most of the time), then load the executable in a disassembler and start analysing, or even better, a decompiler. You need to understand what the code is doing, and ideally to the level of being able to deduce what the original source code was, to ensure that you don't miss those edge cases and small details that mean the difference between getting a 100% working insertion or one that seems to mysteriously crash or glitch randomly. Doing RE well requires a good knowledge of programming too, and the latter tends to be something that either you get, or you don't. Being good at maths, logic, and reasoning correlates well with that.
  6. If you want massive parallel processing on the cheap, why not get your fellow forum friends to pitch in and share their spare CPU cycles. Although it might've been cheaper for him to buy hardware than develop a distributed client... Those connectors look pleased.
  7. The current patch out there is not an official release, so no general support is provided, but we can still look into things on a case-by-case basis if an individual is having a particular issue. About the translation progress, meru has become very busy with other things and can't continue, so we are looking for translator(s) for this project. We were going to sort it out and make a thread with this and several other projects that are dormant, but since the topic came up it might as well be mentioned. This being an ad-hoc mention we have no precise statistics but it's approximately 67-70% completed.
  8. At your current rate of 19.24 lines/day, the ETA for completion is 2017-10-07 01:14:23.
  9. https://fuwanovel.net/novels/141 as seen here (although that is an old screenshot; it's been released now.) Probably Flyable Heart too.
  10. We are a technology provider so from our viewpoint the process appears to be - Initial consultation with client for services required - Text (and later images) extraction, possibly creation of a PoC patch to assist acceptance - Translators/editors/etc go off and change the language of the text, image editors also working here - If asked to, we'll provide partial patches during this time - Once all modifications finished, we produce an initial RTM patch and do platform validation - Iterate this build as necessary if any problems encountered, client also does acceptance testing at this point - Upon the final signing off, make release - Post-release support and patches as necessary until end of support period
  11. Maybe this thread needs a "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START A VN THAT IS BEING SEEDED" warning...
  12. You could say it's due to bad weather...
  13. Judging by the look of the faces, you drew your avatar too? Is there more of her? Keep up the good work.
  14. Now you have an image to associate with "slaps x around with a large trout"... /jp/ used to be alright a few years ago but it's just become a place for trolls to compete in who can produce the most offensive opinions... don't bother arguing with them as they don't use logic. Aaeru's post above is a long explanation of that but it's basically "we want to keep the VN community small and elitist --- and only for those who know Japanese" and with Fuwanovel having an exact opposite stance the hate is not surprising.
  15. What to do when your princess stops waltzing... Have you tried setting compatibility mode to XP or 2000?
  16. Most other forums use username/password. This will likely not change in the future.
  17. You may also want to watch the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HexKjQhObWY.
  18. It should. This "trying to play a VN while it's seeding" (or even worse, trying to patch it) might be responsible for the majority of the "it doesn't work" issues... normally if one process has a file open in exclusive mode it won't let others even read it, and in that case you might get a helpful file in use warning when trying to start, but as torrent clients may be seeding hundreds of files or more they don't want to keep them all open so they just mark them as read-only when they're not opened, leading to these issues. The solution is to either stop seeding or make a copy.
  19. If I remember reading correctly the founder of CraneAnime is in his 50s... the younger generation is obviously the majority of VN consumers but there's probably a "long tail" of older ones too.
  20. Likely with a shorter name, and thus forming a shorter path that was below the engine's limit. FYI Windows has an internal path length limit of 260 - there are tricks programs can use to get up to 32K but in general you should be keeping things below 260 (and even 128 might prove to be problematic for some VN engines...)
  21. You could do this in a few seconds with search+replace... but it is likely not the real source of the problems they are experiencing. Most if not all VN engines will not modify any files and for some of them the entire game can be run from the CD/DVD/mounted .ISO. The exception is savedata/configuration/NVRAM and it is only an issue if the engine writes to the installation directory --- many save somewhere else, such as the default application data directory (%APPDATA%). (Of course if you are applying a translation patch then read-only is an issue! But if the files are RO because a torrent client is seeding them, you should NOT do so as it will cause you to seed wrong data --- copy the files somewhere else first, or stop seeding.)
  22. What a long path! It's over 128 characters which might be an internal limit in the engine. Move it up a few directories to a shorter one.
  23. The line count we gave you is correct as "actual lines of script", not number of records (which is what you may have been thinking, hence the discrepancy). That format is so we can easily break down the count of script lines per character (including unvoiced ones), enables easy reinsertion --- as long as you do not change the reserved columns, and also serves as a reminder that you need not change the names, just skip over those records. Give us a translation of the names and we can change them all at once upon reinsertion. Sorry we haven't setup RWI yet, it's been somewhat busy here but your project is one of the first in the queue.
