You could try Index. I wouldn't say it's characteristically dark in the way the story is told, but the story does contain dark elements. It's also relatively moderate on fanservice (which can appeal to certain fetishes), and Touma does have something of a harem (so far I've encountered 3 love interests, and I hear there are 4 altogether), though the books don't really delve into romance that much. There's also a super cool magic vs. science thing going on too, which is what I'm mainly interested in with Index. This title is licensed btw, so you have the option to buy physical books if you like.

I had previously voted no to the book reviews when you brought up the poll, and that was mainly because I already have a good number of recommendations from friends, and my grandma likes to shove books on me too, lol. You're the only one I know that religiously covers untranslated VNs, and I value them as a source of motivation for learning Japanese. That being said, I haven't heard of this trilogy until now, and it does seem awfully interesting. I've recently started picking up books as part of a nighttime cooldown routine before going to sleep also (it was suggested to me by my insomnia therapist), so it might not be long before I work my way through the bulk of what I've been planning to read. So, yeah, I've pretty much changed my mind on the vote. Thanks for the review!

Sure. I'd recommend watching the whole thing if you have the time as it's pretty interesting stuff, but the part I'm talking about starts at 1:24. I don't really mind fanservice at all, but the boobs wobbling around was a little too much to take in for me, lol.

Confession: I realized today that one of the shows I watched as a kid was spelled Looney Tunes, not Looney Toons. Of all the false memories I've come across relating to the Mandela Effect, this is the only one that comes close to convincing me that this is more than just a psychological phenomenon.
