  1. If Seinarukana's success hinges on a Steam version, then the future of H-RPGs in the west is already kind of screwed, and there's not much anyone can do about it. You have to appeal to ero-gamers who are okay with complicated gameplay systems, and that's a very thin market here. On Steam, you have to compete with non-ero games and, well, to be honest that's a really hard sell. When you take the H out of H-RPGs and try to judge them purely on the merits of their gameplay against non-H-RPGs, they always come up short. They always have and always will. How do you get the crowd who plays stuff like Fire Emblem but won't touch eroge, to look at an all-ages version of Seinarukana favorably? I'm honestly not sure such a thing is possible. Take the H out of an H-RPG and you're simply left with an underwhelming game in practically every case.
  2. RE: Aselia the Eternal and JAST's failure to pursue a steam release: They actually infamously did and were turned down. This was the era before Greenlight, when employees by Valve had to look through and personally evaluate every single applicant for Steam. They had almost no Japanese games, I think Recettear was the one of the only ones and was considered an anomaly. Valve was considered biased against Japanese products and especially against anything with an anime art style. To further complicate matters, Aselia was a censored version of an H-game, and this scared the bejeezus out of Valve. So because of especially the last factor, they denied its entry onto Steam. This leads directly into my next point, the perception of H-games in the west. JAST can't exactly send Kotaku and Rock Paper Shotgun builds of Seinarukana and expect comprehensive coverage. Maybe they could have gotten some mentions if they tried harder on Aselia, but Seinarukana has no all-ages version right now. Almost no one is going to cover it as an RPG even if JAST tries their damndest to get them to do so. How do you market it to a crowd that refuses to touch anything with any sort of H in it? It's a really difficult task and I'm not sure if there is an answer at all. I think an all-ages version of Seinarukana can be made, though, and the way JAST is thinking and operating these days, they will almost certainly do that. It may take a while, though. Romanesque's all-ages version is taking longer than I expected, Seinarukana's may take even longer. They won't attempt to market it as an RPG until that's ready.
  3. Thing is, no, there won't be a VN translation more highly requested than Angel Beats for a while. But you shouldn't assume that will make translation easier. Popular with community members is not the same as popular with translators, and to be honest it's really, really hard to start and finish a project successfully as a non-translator no matter what. You should instead focus on giving translators an attractive reason for working with you. You need to be able to provide a service they can't get elsewhere, such as having top-notch editing skills or strong connections in order to build and maintain a strong team right away. Without aspects like these, to be honest you're probably better off joining other projects in need. If you can provide these things then Angel Beats strikes me as a really odd choice considering Sekai Project's relationship with Key. I seriously think that the chances of an official Angel Beats announcement at AX are like 90%. If we're wishlisting here then some of the VNs I most want to see translated MIGHT be popular enough to attract talent. Specifically Minato Carnival's upcoming game co-written by both the main scenario writers of Majikoi and Oretsuba, Takahiro and Ou Jackson respectively, Anekouji Naoko to Gin'iro no Shinigami. It's a new, upcoming title with great looking art and some seriously renowned writing talent behind it. But it's not a Key game, so you won't get people begging for a bootleg translation a few months sooner than the official one, like with Angel Beats. But if it turns out to be good you may have an easier time attracting prospective translators than many of the other VNs mentioned here. edit: It will also probably be a better VN than Angel Beats. Stuff like Light's games have been popular among western Japanese readers for a long time and yet no translation projects have even begun. This is because they're very high-difficulty VNs and you should stay away unless you have an extremely talented translator already on-board.

  5. MangaGamer's origin was in Japan. They had a dummy company set up in Europe that they ran everything through for legal reasons.

You can pre-order the game for the equivalent of $47.22 USD from this british site: https://uk.gamesplanet.com/game/grand-theft-auto-v--2625-1?ref=itad They basically just sell a key that you plug into steam, they claim that you will get the keys at some point ahead of release and will be able to preload the game normally. It's a legit site, I've purchased from them before. I'll still hold out, I'm a bit strapped for cash right now. edit: Warning, it appears that this WON'T be a steam key, but only redeemable on Rockstar's own content delivery platform. It blows my mind that there are non-steam versions of major PC games in the year of our lord 2015.
  7. So I started finishing up Majikoi. I actually left off partway through the Momoyo route over a year ago, after finishing the other three then-translated routes. I forgot how long this game's routes are. It's ridiculous! There are so many different story arcs in Momoyo's route alone. But it's as entertaining as I remember, which is good. I was actually a little scared after re-reading the common route because it didn't really compel me, outside of a few funny moments, but then I remembered that the VN really doesn't start getting great until you enter the heroine routes. edit: oh that was it.
  8. It doesn't belong on that scale. It's nowhere near as bad as MangaGamer's first few years. It reads better than most fan translations, but overall it's just... kind of sloppy, I guess? I expect better out of MangaGamer these days.
  9. Me and Tiag de Varela go way back, that would never happen. *ahem* Are you guys planning on releasing any partial patches? I know that was in the plans at some point for Majikoi but never happened for various reasons.

  11. Rockstar seems to be taking this port seriously unlike GTA4. I haven't played 5 yet and am really looking forward to this port. I rarely buy games full price but maybe I'll do so here if they don't botch things. My graphics card exceeds their recommended settings so maybe I'll be able to max it out.
  12. In the route chart, the untranslated Childhood arc comes before the 2nd Year 1st Semester. If I move on to the Wairu S patch after finishing Majikoi the first, will I have to skip that Childhood bit or is it optional? It seems weird that it wasn't translated.
  13. I was actually just about to ask about a team name. Mainly because I want to add this team to the VNDB so they'll be credited there for these patches. I need to know what to call this team in order to do that!

  18. Turns out it's pretty easy to do this.
  19. G-Senjou's route structure isn't one of common route + branches. It uses a different structure and you can't really call the main trunk a common route. From the start to the Chapter 5 branch point may be longer than Grisaia's common route, but it's full of story and plot twists and all that, so it goes by quickly. Majikoi's common route... not even close to as long. I'm mostly with you, though. I loved Grisaia's and Rewrite's common routes. I'm okay with long meandering common routes full of nothing but slice of life stuff, as long as it's written well.
  20. Just use the skip function. It should only take a few minutes to skip past each route.
  21. You should wait and see. Don't jump the gun on this, don't try to assemble a team for a VN you don't even know if you'll like or if it will get licensed. Sekai Project will definitely be interested in licensing this, I'd say the odds of it not getting an official release are very low. Even if they want to wait for the whole thing (they won't want to, they'd definitely be okay releasing it piecemeal just like in Japan), I still say it's a wasted effort to translate something you know will get licensed eventually anyways. There is an incredible wealth of great untranslated VNs out there, it's would be a bit of a shame to see the limited resources of the community be used just to make a translation available a little bit faster for the impatient people out there.
