Highway Blossoms FuwaReview Discussion
solidbatman replied to solidbatman's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Another thing that affected my score, was what I felt the purpose was. From the start, I really was not expecting some deep character examinations, or some sort of character deconstruction. I expected a fun, cute, to the point yuri EVN. Pretty much what the game delivers on. If the game was going to try to get into heavy character examinations, just about everything I'd be looking for would be different. I'd care less about the overall VN, and look more into the gritty details. I mean, we all know that I could care less about giving things bad scores, and I've zero qualms calling out the writing as you stated. But this game didn't hinder my enjoyment because of its writing. Its purpose did not place heavy emphasis on the writing. Now you could point to Sakura Santa, and how I eviscerated that dung pile of a VN and say, "But what about its purpose?" Or an even better example, The Meanagerie, another EVN I gave a low score to. In Sakura Santa's case, it just sucked all the way around. Nothing was fun or enjoyable, and the entire VN felt like there was no effort put in behind it. The Meangerie on the other hand, attempted to be more than just a futa nukige. It had routes of deep character exploration, and thats what killed its score, because all of that exploration, on the surface, looks super deep and detailed, but really meant nothing. It was all so poorly written, and I judged it accordingly. Highway Blossoms never really attempted such a thing, and I never found myself wishing to see more detailed characters in it, so it never hindered my enjoyment and was not worth bringing up in my opinion anyway. I've also been awake for god knows how long and have no clue if anything I just said makes sense but its all good. Obviously, there are limits to this, and if piss poor writing ever stood out and made reading the VN less enjoyable, I'd call it out. So hopefully you dont think I'll automatically give things I high score just because I had a ton of fun. Hell, Fata Morgana is my all time favorite VN, and its not even my highest scored VN when it comes to reviews. -
sounds like every time I set a deadline for a review for myself or homework....

Highway Blossoms FuwaReview Discussion

Jumbo lasted 5 minutes as opposed to an hour. Served little purpose correct, but because it didn't happen often, it didnt bug me. If the VN was another 2-3 hours long, I likely would have begun to criticize its length in terms of its actual story content. I mean, I did mention that when the relationship started, everything did start dragging along. Edit: Read your take on it, and I don't necessarily disagree with you. I just have a different way of looking at the VNs, and try to look at the picture as a whole. I'm sure I could find things to criticize in this one for days, but first and foremost, I want to describe why I found something enjoyable, or why I found something boring. Looking at the actual writing on a line for line basis is something that does not help me describe my enjoyment of a VN, unless things are so bad it detracts from said enjoyment. I enjoyed Highway Blossoms, so I am far more willing to forgive some flaws, and just flat out miss others. -

No one hour scene involving the cooking of pancakes that adds absolutely nothing to the story. -
Any news on The Human Reignition Project?

Judging by how polished Highway Blossoms was, I'd expect they are taking their time and not rushing things. -
The VN has multiple scenes featuring pancakes. I found myself triggered more than once. http://fuwanovel.net/reviews/2016/08/12/highway-blossoms/

What the hell are you doing up still bats? You have class in like, 7 hours. You haven't taken a math class in 3 years and you just switched from a history major to geology so you need to catch up on math! You know what though, fuck my future, I have shit posting to do. And what better excuse to shit post than to celebrate 4000 posts on this wretched, evil, disgusting forum. When I started out here, I was a mere boy, looking for a way to run Never7 with sound because I like noises with my shitty VNs. Guess what? I still never bothered solving that issue, and to this day have not read Never7. I likely never will. Rainbow UI turns me off. Gray and black turn me on. You know what I mean? I did discover, however, that people take their shitty porn games super serious. They tell localization company CEOs to kill themselves, they all have business degrees and experience in dealing with JP companies, and above all, will make porn popular in the west. Well, their porn. Research tells me porn is already pretty popular. So is sex with most people not voting Republican this election. This is all besides the point though. But what is the point? The point is that I've wasted too much time on this place, been too frustrated with people here, been too angry at some of the idiocy here. The VN community today is a joke. There is no point in me trying to make sense of it anymore. It is a completely different beast from the typical, misguided anger filled gaming community. The VN community is basically a monster, finding any piece of negativity to feed on, growing, bubbling up into pretentious, wordy arguments, or rage filled tweets/posts. Unfortunately, I've been a part of that monster more than once. I've come to realize, I hate the VN community, and by extension, I've come to dislike Fuwanovel's forums. Don't get me wrong, I love reviewing things still, and love working with the reviews team, and sometimes the blog team when called upon. But the forums? /r/visualnovels? Lewdgamer? Nichegamer? Sekai Project? I hate them all. I only like Mangagamer because they released Fata Morgana, and if you haven't read it, go read it because its the best VN this market will see most likely. Unless some EVN team blows my socks off. The VN community is a contradiction. Large swaths of it want VNs to be taken seriously, to grow and become a popular story telling medium in the west. And its well on its way, adapting to the market. That same swath sees this adapting to the market as a bad thing though and wants zero alterations to the source. Its completely understandable too. I would not be happy if Persona 5 comes West with large chunks of the game simply removed, or huge alterations done like in Revelations: Persona. I highly doubt though, that VNs will become popular unless the stigma of porn games is removed. Then some parts of the community could care less wtf happens to the market, as long as they get their uncut porn. What does this create? A fucking angry community, constantly fighting, constantly harassing localization employees, and even having employees get in on all of the stupidity (dovac, fucking delete your twitter for gods sake). I hate it all. I've realized, it matters not one bit to me in the real world because my life does not revolve around this shit. Each day, I find myself caring less and less about how to make VNs popular, and find myself despising the community more and more. So, its time to basically cut ties with the community. If I didn't like doing reviews so much, I'd had left a while ago. So, this is a shit post, its a rant post, its a celebration post. Its sort of a farewell post. No, unfortunately I am not quitting Fuwanovel completely. Like I said, I love doing reviews, writing them, and reading what my team writes. So you Keyfuckers are just going to have to deal with the fact that Bats is still around to spread the salt (though maybe not reviewing Key VNs since he can't do it properly anymore). But forum activity? If it isn't review related, I'm done. If it was practical, I'd get my reviews board moved somewhere off these forums and work with the team there. But its not. I would say I'd miss reading and talking to most of you.... but it'd be a lie. I'm sure one or two of you will say something super smart, and defensive over the community today, in an attempt to disprove my words. Do it, I won't argue with you. Have at this post. After all, I am just a little bitch to be ignored And before I forget, here is a picture of my refrigerator. I labeled some parts as best as I could. So lets celebrate! tl;dr bats is angry, and done with this shit. Except reviews, he still likes doing all of that.

I like most of what I have seen so far in the game but I don't think I'll jump into early access just yet without more updates. The world is there, a few of the NPCs are there, but otherwise, right now, it is a walking sim from what I've seen. Still, holds a lot of promise.

You don't really need to understand writing techniques to write a review. The main thing I ask of the Reviews team is to simply ask themselves if they enjoyed the VN. Then to go from there. Too many reviewers, VN or not, fall into this trap where they attempt to sound smart, using theories, "techniques" among other things to create a long winded review that acts like some sort of literary paper. FuwaReviews is more aimed at a newer audience. After all, Fuwanovel's goal is to "makes visual novels popular in the west." So, for my reviews, I simply seek to explain why I enjoyed, or did not enjoy a title, and why. I prefer to spend my time looking at the content, not the style of writing. In my experience, the people outside of the community, who have read FuwaReviews, continue to use our site, as opposed to any others featured in our feeds on the hub. So just like Gakhthun, that review is long winded He repeats himself over and over, just like the VN

Kickstarter to buy Maeda a new heart! I do hope maybe Visual Arts can work something out and help him. He's done a lot for the Key brand, and his works mean a lot to many people. Even if he no longer writes, and just takes it easy for a while, it'd be nice to have him around.

I am never for actual story related sex scenes being removed. Blood and gore should also not be removed. But most VNs really dont do story related sex scenes. Maybe Grisaia, and thats it? Most are there to sell copies which is why I dont really care when they do get removed. I absolutely prefer two releases as opposed to an all ages only release, but again, it simply is not something I care very much about as it has no bearing on getting VNs more mainstream in the West in my opinion. I completely understand that some people really really enjoy the 18+ aspect, but said 18+ aspect will not make VNs popular to a wider audience. Might sell well in the current audience for sure. Again, actual story should never be cut. The MoeNovel debacle should never be repeated.
