  1. I did what I normally do when I want the answer to a question: I consulted Wikipedia. The relevant entry is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pornography_in_Europe#Norway I'd recommend not trying to import this. Buy it digitally. I didn't check the sources listed in that last line (they look like they're in Norwegian), so that's the next step if you want to continue investigating.
  2. I'm pretty sure real people don't talk about VNs.
  3. The value of sex in VNs is that, done properly, it enhances the romance. It's the climax to romantic buildup. MangaGamer's statement has truth to it. The Western mindset is that porn by its very nature devalues the work. That porn is not art and art cannot contain porn. This assumption is baseless. Porn works quite well in many stories: Song of Saya and School Days, just to name a few. The integration of hardcore porn and story is what makes Japanese eroge unique as a genre and as an experience. Not to mention the age-gate that porn enforces tends to discourage the childish JRPG-style storytelling that Japanese games have become somewhat infamous for. You can't pander to an audience that you're legally forbidden to sell to.
  4. Advertising is what you're missing out on with no publisher. To compensate, you need to find partners who will help you promote your product. Talk to MangaGamer and Sekai Project about carrying your title in their store. Talk to press outlets and fansites that cover visual novels (Fuwanovel, LewdGamer, Siliconera). Talk to Reddit about allowing you to post occasional updates, or if that's impossible, partner with a well-known user who will champion your game for you. You don't need a publisher to succeed, but realize that you'll be responsible for all the duties a publisher would perform for you.
  5. I'm pretty sure Overdrive was in financial trouble a couple years ago, and probably still are. They started floating ideas for crowdfunding and such to keep the cash flow going. Go Go Nippon was a lucky break for them but might not have been enough to keep developing their usual high-budget titles.
  6. Nutaku comments on the difficulties of marketing and distributing adult games. But is their upcoming adult gaming store the silver bullet they say it is? Perspective: Nutaku and the difficulties of marketing adult games
  7. Huh. And here I was impressed that MangaGamer wrote up a professional-sounding explanation of the genre for a casual audience. I thought the industry had collectively decided to ignore the people they're selling to.
  8. The US governing system is technically speaking a republic, not a democracy. It was never intended to be a true democracy, nor fully responsive to the whims of the majority. The very idea of constitutional limits on government is anti-democratic because it limits the will of the majority. Citizens were intended to influence the overall direction of government, but the system itself was crafted to be fairly rigid and resistant to change.
  9. It's a simple "highest points wins" system. There's no bad or normal end.
  10. Bingo. The whole idea behind superdelegates is to ensure the party gets the candidate the party wants. Trump wouldn't have won the Democratic Party nomination because the odds would have been stacked against him--exactly as intended.
  11. During the enemy assault at the end of the long Ch. 3 mission, you need to proactively attack the attacking units to achieve SS rank. If you wait for them to attack you, you'll run out of time. In particular, the last all-arounder that spawns needs to be defeated quickly. You'll also want to build an upgraded Sands of Time LV3, which becomes available at the start of that mission.
  12. Windows 10 VN Compatibility Community Project A community project to document visual novel compatibility with Windows 10 in one place in a unified, easily-searchable format.
  13. I'm curious what privileged knowledge is gained from living in the US that cannot be gained through other means.
  14. For the Ch. 3 Berbalzerd fight (normal mode): The boss's attack pattern is a very simple algorithm. Attack him with a Material attack, and he'll use his Force attack. Attack with a Force attack (or no attack), and he'll use his Material attack. If the attack does combined damage, the parameter dealing highest unmitigated DMG (base damage x STR or MAG) determines the attack type (for Katima's 8% Material 500 Force attack, this is Force). Note: This attack pattern is only valid for Aggressive strategy! He has a high damage AoE melee attack, and only his Material attack builds mana for it. Therefore if you force him to always use his Force attack, he'll never be able to build up mana for his melee ultimate. Use Talia, Jatzieta, Ruputuna. Use Talia's 500 Material 250 Force attack, Jatzieta's 650 Force AoE defend, and Ruptuna's Banish setup skill (for the first turn, swap Talia and Ruputuna so you can Banish II his starting move, which lowers your damage). Berbalzerd's Hydra MUST be banished because the damage is unmitigatable, and only Ruputuna's move is capable of doing so. You'll tank his 300 Force AoE support skill occasionally, but it'll be 100% mitigated by Jatzieta's defense skill. Talia may run out of attacks before the fight is over. Switch to Ruputuna (she has an equivalent attack skill to Talia's) to finish Berbalzerd off, but make sure you don't miss a Banish on Hydra (if it's cast without Ruptuna's Banish setup skill already active, you won't be able to stop it). If Nozomu has his upgraded defense move, you can sub him for Talia and use Cross Divider, alternating with Jatzieta. Nozomu will tank the Material attack and Jatzieta will tank the Force attack. This alternate strategy results in a much quicker kill. The boss never uses his AoE melee move even though he accumulates sufficient mana, probably because by that point he's spamming Hydra and his AI probably isn't allowed to use Hydra and his AoE melee attack on the same turn.
  15. There's clearly some underlying problem in the code that manifests sporadically. @Tyrosyn hypothesized the problem may be linked to use of spoiler code.
  16. This is the entire premise of a representative democracy. We don't want the average person, or even the collective, making important political decisions. Christ, half the nation can't even take care of themselves, much less contribute usefully to running the country. That's why we elect representatives who hopefully can make better decisions than we can--and they in turn appoint experts who handle the actual policymaking and implementation. The common person influences the process, but they're not making decisions because they're not qualified to do so. And that's exactly how it should be. Give total power to the people and the result is mob rule--pretty much how Internet communities typically function, and we know how dysfunctional those can be.
  17. Unfortunately, foreigners like @Down know more about the US political system than 90% of Americans. Being a foreigner by no means makes him unqualified to comment. And again, it was @Rooke who made the point that American democracy is by no means unique. Most affluent Western nations share a similar system. However, tyranny of the majority is a thing, which is why we have constitutional limits on government power, separation of powers, and a judiciary that is remote from the political process. This is why it's all the more concerning that judicial appointments are being politicized. This is EXACTLY what the founders of our political system were trying to avoid. If we keep this up our republic is going to give way sooner or later to mob rule (i.e., democracy). What terrifies me most about Trump is how he oversimplifies complex problems and promises outlandish "solutions" that would make these problems far worse, not better. All politicians do this to some degree, but Trump is by far the most anti-intellectual candidate that's achieved popular support. This sort of deliberate delusional mass indoctrination of the public is classically associated with authoritarianism, cultism and yes--fascism. The more I reflect, the more I realized Obama was everything I wanted in a president. He's careful, deliberate, reasonably apolitical, and his arguments are reasoned and nuanced. He recognizes and embraces the complexity of the problems America faces. Trump is his antithesis. If I had a message to the American people, it would be this: elect a president who will be an effective leader, not simply one who will champion your pet cause.
  18. This was a fascinating read I came across while parsing through The Atlantic. It frames Trump as a neo-fascist and an existential threat to American democracy. NYmag: Democracies end when they are too democratic. And right now, America is a breeding ground for tyranny. One of my favorite lines:
  19. They're side-stories. I know from experience that Naya's route is barebones with little connection to the main plot, while the translator himself said that Ruptuna's route seemed unfinished. Satsuki, Nozomi, and Narukana have the most obvious connections to the main plot. Although bear in mind that route divergence happens in the last 10-20% of the game, so it's going to be mostly the same experience regardless. As for typos, I haven't seen any at all. The only issues of note I've spotted are TL errors. Seems like the game underwent thorough proofreading but no translation checking at all. Well, that's probably typical and maybe I'm only noticing now that I'm paying attention.
  20. Just wanted to warn that if you use this strategy, you will lose for sure. If you let Drav's support mana build up (by not forcing him to Banish whenever he's using Energy Leak), eventually he'll use his armageddon Banish. If you then Banish when he uses his Support Skill that targets the whole group for low damage, that armageddon banish will trigger and it's a wipe. Cross Divider makes the fight much simpler, but it's not required to win. I just cleared the battle with Nozomu (LV7, starter attack move equipped), Satsuki (LV8, 500 material attack move), and Nozomi (LV7, 700 material defense move). The turn limit of 20 isn't a hard limit; that's simply a break that resets mana and allows you to choose a different formation. You can make the Drav fight into an endurance fight if you wish by relying on Nozomu's 10% party heal. Defensive style is required for this strategy because banishing Drav's low dmg AoE is critical to prevent him from spamming his high-power attack move. Cross divider spam without Inspire makes the battle pretty trivial however. Do use Energy Leak + defensive style to stop his low DMG AoE or Nozomi might die from the extra damage. Inspire+Cross Divider also works (aggressive style only), but make sure Nozomi is at least LV7 or she'll die due to the decreased defense, and sub Sol for Satsuki (for his Support damage skill) to cancel the armageddon Banish move (Satsuki will just end up triggering it). This strategy is the simplest because you don't have to change formation at all except to swap Nozomu to attacker after he uses Inspire. I also tried with defensive style but Nozomi died; either Drav's attack pattern changed or he got an extra Resolute buff that allowed him to deal just a little more damage. Edit: I redid the fight in Hard Mode. It's actually much easier. His massive AoE damage attack is relatively weaker and heals are significantly more powerful in Hard Mode, so his attacks can be facetanked with little or no strategy.
  21. Use the fast-forward key. It's the Ctrl-button by default. You can also change the settings in the config menu to skip animations or only show the outcome.
  22. Don't know for sure, but you can find out yourself. Inspire's buff modifies the stat percentages in the character status page, so all the other buffs should too. Let us know what you find.
  23. The translations should be adequate. Raidy 1 is overpriced for the amount of content. 2 and 3 are a better value. You'll miss out on some backstory by skipping 1 but it's not a huge deal. You could skip right to 3 I suppose but I don't see any overriding reason to do so.
  24. Open up Firefox and click this link. Then open the same link in Chrome. The former directs you to the end of the thread. The latter takes you to my post. Being able to link to a specific post is a pretty important feature. I link to Fuwa posts in news articles. If this feature is broken, that limits my ability to use the Fuwanovel forums as a reference.
