Ask an Anarchist!
Kaguya and one other reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
I'm really not interested in what you find sickening. I suppose I could fake interest, but that would involve manipulating many facial muscles and making sympathetic noises, that in turn takes effort, and that in turn goes against my creed. Sorry. Overpopulation is a definite problem, and there’s a clear upside to a cull, yes. It would also be consistent with ideologies we already hold, and practices we already put into practice, only we target different living creatures. The upside of culling is not in dispute, it's a fact that the planet will be better off, other living creatures will be better off, and even our own species will be better off. Whether it’s the ‘humane’ thing to do is the key question, but what’s ‘humane’ shifts from person to person and from topic to topic. It seems to be an inconsistent principle which at times promotes the idea that human life is sacred, but every other life is not. And at these moments it defies logic. But that's not necessarily what I think. I am also guilty of that pesty thing called 'emotion', but I recognise that it's not logical. Culling people makes sense, and there's clearly a ton of benefits, so it can't objectively be called 'bad' or even 'horrific', it all depends on perspective. I think the idea that the rich ‘sit on their arses’ is a definite generalisation. Some rich people might sit on their arses just like some poor people sit on their arses, but many of the rich don’t, and quite a few change the world in ways no poor person could accomplish. I also don't have anything against hoarding in general, I'm all for the mass imitation of one of the more loveable characteristics of the Dragon species. Sure, the working class is the driver of every economy, that’s not really in dispute, but have you ever wondered why the working class in very socialist countries, like past China, never actually accomplished much compared to the working class in Western countries? China’s becoming rich as it slowly does away with their Communist (recent) past, one piece at a time. Communism and socialism has jokingly been said to have been an American conspiracy to keep the Chinese down. What progress did China give to the world while it was poor, what progress is it accomplishing now that it’s becoming richer? What contribution did the working class make when they were poor? Was China socialist or anarchistic when they invented the oddities which change the world and drove civilisation forward an age ago? Like most things in life, it's not the 'what' but the 'how' which makes the difference. The opportunity for profit won't disappear with renewable resources, they'd just shift, to batteries for example. Most renewable sources aren’t efficient enough to actually make a go of things yet. The market is a powerful creature, and when it deems that there’s no future in oil it will turn its colossal weight into alternatives. Which is why the best mechanism to deal with increasing renewables is by using market mechanisms, but unfortunately Europe is becoming a little broke at the moment, America’s just recovering from being a little broke, and China and India are just going through their industrial revolutions and aren't rich enough to drive innovation on a large scale atm. I would hardly call benefitting a billion people ‘a few.’ Progress has benefited the entirety of humanity as a species, but progress does not need to benefit every single human, or even the majority of humans, to be of net benefit to the species. Indeed, health. Let’s talk about health. What’s the average age of human life in the Western world compared to 2,000 years ago? Yes there are more lung cancer victims today, but on average we live many decades longer. This is called a net boon. I’m sure the Cambodian workers didn't, but the payment of workers in Cambodia is a matter for their Government. And who patronised the inventors to allow them to ‘invent’ stuff. Unless, of course, you think modern day inventions come from the penniless on the street. Who patronises the scientists? Agriculturists? Who funds the engineers? Who funds medical research? Do you think any of these people can afford a lab without somebody with money helping out? Money, and power, these are the things which sets wheels in motion, and if you looked back over the course of history you would realise this. Point to where I said socialism didn’t have a place? Everything has a balance, but unfortunately you are arguing an extreme case. A nice rule of thumb is that 'extremes are undesirable'. The world will never have time for anarchy and socialist societies, they never work in large scale and they never will. But the world will have time for socialistic principles, sure. Because you seem to think that people dying are a ‘bad’ thing. I’m saying unless you’re concerned about every creature, I reject your conclusion that it’s ‘bad’ based on logic. Furthermore, that it’s a matter of perspective and that culling the human population will actually benefit the planet and other species. So whether it's 'horrific' would depend on your perspective. Less waste is definitely a good thing, just like less demand (fewer people) is definitely a good thing. Holistic solutions would call for both, I believe. I’m very happy that you have an idol to be enthusiastic over and to look up to, everybody needs one, but I’d very much appreciate it if you wouldn't shove him down my throat. Thnx.2 points -

Diamon and one other reacted to rainsismyfav for a blog entry
Hi hi Fuwa. My name is rains. I'd like to start this blog for my personal casual anime and VN reviews. Of course I have preferences and specific biases for certain aspects of anime and VN. I'd like to explain myself so that you guys know from what perspective my reviews are coming from. I have played I'd say quite a decent amount of Visual novels, mostly translated and some untranslated here and there. My list is: https://vndb.org/u46648/list Having been in the scene for at least 7 years now, barely anything is new to me anymore. Cliches and archetypes are easily visible to me and it takes a game or anime a great bit to entertain me nowadays. I have great biases for Romance, Drama, and Mystery. Anything chuuni is a hit-or-miss for me. Some of my top ones are Muv-luv, Clannad, Ever17, Kanata Yori, and Shinsekai Yori. But at the same time I can enjoy moeges/kyara-ge like Flyable hearts, Yosuga no Sora, or Edelweiss. I'm tolerant for the most part when it comes to anything bizarre (like Saya no Uta). My reviews will be very basic and I won't really delve too much into analysis or breakdowns. It will be mostly based on how entertained I was playing or watching. Enjoy my future reviews~ Thanks for reading.2 points -

This isn't even a "cutest" girl thread anymore, it's a "who is the best girl" poll now. I mean seriously, Kurugaya is not cute. She shouldn't even be tied with Kud because that's just trolling. I think people confuse someone being cute based on their personality rather than looks alone. I am not a huge fan of Kud or Komari, and even I know solely based on looks, they should win this competition.1 point -

Well, delays are common in VN Localization business Good thing, that they listen to crowd. People wanted VITA, and no android, they changed it. People wanted to start with guaranteed ML + MLA (250,000$) they listened. I hope they'll change tier for Photons but chances are very slight... And the delays are probably, because of communication, it probably looks like this: Degica asks JP Age for something, they need to talk about it, and officialize it or deny it, then they answer to Degica. And there we go, couple days later. And somewhere in between theres also JP ixtl. KS will still probably start in Sept.1 point -

No my "addiction" really start last year, probably after I finish Danganronpa or Yume Miru Kusuri. Other Vns I really love : G-senjou no maou, Kara no Shoujo, Steins; Gate, Fate Stay Night, Eden*, MajiKoi, YuNo or Sharin no Kuni And i'm currently reading Tsukihime and To Heart 2. Hello everyone.. let me start by stating that i am fairly new to visual novels, 2 months ago i had no idea they even existed ! but now my life has changed ! i am a huge anime fan so obviously i was immediately hooked when i started playing visual novels. My first visual novel was Katawa Shoujou (yeah i know many people start there too). Katawa Shoujou still holds a special place in my heart, it could be that because it was my first VN, but i thought it was amazing, the route that really attracted me was Rin's route, maybe because she was very mysterious, i wanted to understand her, i can't say i was satisfied with the ending, but the i found the neutral ending to be very depressing. anyway, after katawa i have played: *G-senjou no Maou: i thought it was great, but i wasn't really drawn to the characters, so i didn't get emotional throughout the game, but it is a great VN nonetheless. *Saya no Uta: i loved that game, i was immediately drawn to the characters, it was an interesting idea how the protagonist suddenly found himself in that world after the incident. Saya was very cute and mysterious. i liked all the endings. Kara no Shoujo: i tried that VN but it did not appeal to me, i didn't find the protagonist to be interesting at all, for some reason i wasn't drawn to anything throughout the novel, so i did not finish it. Cross Channel: i started playing it a few days ago, it is funny, i can't say i like the characters yet, i am still giving it a chance. Little Busters!: before playing it i was giving the impression that it was one of the best, if not the best VN so i had very high expectations, i have finished 3 routes so far (right now i am playing Kuds route), i think the VN is good, it has the comedy aspect, some routes are very sad, however i can't saw i was really attracted to the heroines, i thought it was a little bit over average. i still plan to finish it though. and finally..Narcissu.. First of all i would like to give an advice for those who have not played it yet, if you suffer from depression or any serious related condition DO NOT play this game, it may trigger some really terrible emotions. also if you haven't played it, i don't recommend you to read any further for spoiler purposes. i have played this novel yesterday (i finished the whole thing in one setting), and let me say this, i still feel terrible...this novel is brilliant, from the beginning of the game the whole thing is so depressing, i mean can it really be any worse? the protagonist found out that he was terminally ill and that he is going to die soon, the whole atmosphere is so dark, you are left with no hope from the very start, even the protagonist's family do not seem to be supportive of him (or at least thats how i saw it). and he was moved to the 7th floor to basically die there, of course what made everything worse is when he met Setsumi, another girl who is also terminally ill, in my honest opinion it is way more painful to watch someone you care about suffer than suffering yourself. One thing to point out in this novel is that you don't get to know the illness of the protagonist or Setsumi, maybe there were hints but i think making that unclear made a huge impact in this novel, because that left the reader in a curious state, it honestly made me more drawn to the characters because i wanted to know more about them, especially Setsumi...i could feel her emptiness, her sorrow and her sadness. maybe because i suffer from depression myself, if you do then you know what i am talking about... Setsumi was really painful to watch throughout the whole VN, i wanted her to have a future, to be happy, but i knew it was impossible, the VN makes that very clear, i could relate to everything Setsumi has said,i could feel her pain, it was painful.. it was also very interesting how both the protagonist and Setsumi did not fall in love, like almost all other VNs, that also indicated how both of them were very aware of their circumstances, it was sad, but they both knew it would be way worse if they were emotionally attracted to each other, that would make everything 100 times more tragic, they were both going to die soon anyway... Also the fact that they were not in love made the reader care more about Setsumi, maybe to balance the lack of emotional attachment, if that makes any sense. anyway, the ending was really amazing, very sad yet i can't deny it was a master piece in my opinion, although the ending was obvious; the way it was carried out was very spectacular, again the lack of emotions of the protagonist while watching Setsumi walking to her death was intentionally made that way to make an emotional impact on the reader...that line were the protagonist asked Setsumi "do you want me to stop you? or give you a push on the back?", it could not have been said better, her answer was very sad too, she never said no...she just said "thats a good question, i wonder about that", that line just made me want to save her, very sad. to summarize, i think this vn is a masterpiece, however, i wish i hadn't read it, like i said, it triggered some deep scars for me that i won't really discuss, this is why i say if you cannot handle sad novels like that i do not advise you to read it. anyway, sorry if i bored you to death, i know i am a terrible writer and English is not my first language so i bet it was tough for you guys to read through it. i would love to hear you opinions on this VN or the other ones i mentioned.1 point

I originally read Narcissu when I was in a depressed state of mind, and it actually really helped. Narcissu taught me to view things in a proper perspective. It showed me that there are far bigger concerns in life then the petty stuff I was getting depressed by. It got me to really think about the significance of life and death in ways I never really thought of before. In fact, I hope you don't mind if I self promote a bit. But I have an article digitally published in which I analyze and do a close reading of Narcissu. You can read it here.1 point

10年ほど前に義兄さんが逝ったのを機に、 You got this part right. The first part is "When my brother-in-law died 10 years ago", and the second part is "took the opportunity to" 私の姉さんは娘夫婦や孫に面倒を見てもらうことになった This part tells you that the speaker's older sister is the one "taking the opportunity to" do something. 娘夫婦や孫 refers to her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren as you derived. Probably better just be translated to "her daughter's family". 面倒を見てもらうことになった here, 見てもらう shows that the older sister in question is the one being looked after. From context, I assume the older sister is not the main character, and "moving in" is appropriate stand-in for 面倒を見てもらう その為、住み慣れたこの土地を離れ、姪たちのいる青森へ移ることになったのだ 住み慣れたこの土地 is "this land she was familiar with" 離れ is "to leave" 青森へ移る The subject of the sentence is still the speaker's older sister, so the one moving is the older sister 姪たちのいる is an adjective phrase describing Aomori, saying that the speaker's niece (the older sister's daughter) lives in Aomori. Put together, it's something along the lines of: "When my brother-in-law (or "her husband") died 10 years ago, my older sister took the opportunity to move in with her daughter's family. To do so, she had to leave this area (town? city? probably a better word here) she had become familiar with and move to Aomori, where my niece (or "her daughter") lived".1 point -

What on earth happened? Eclipsed is actually playing VNs again? I wrapped up Majikoi (all routes, main, side, and Agave) today, and am now waiting for my copy of Swan Song to arrive for the reading club. I'm looking forward both to a change in tone and to reading something a bit shorter, after Majikoi turned out to be super long, though I'm pretty sure Swan Song is going to be too heavy for me. The failure of an indie platformer
Suzu Fanatic reacted to Narcosis for a topic
You have to keep in mind there are some downsides to this. Every market has a limit of how much it is able to consume; currently, we're producing much more we're able to consume. It's especially prolific in the mmorpg genre, where we have a lot of games to chose from and whole playerbase scattered across a vast sea of titles; the drawback to this is a lot of those games don't get the required ammount of players to work properly. They have to struggle to at least cover expenses and earn the people behind it enough to make a living. In a nutsheel, this is - more or less - the current situation inside the japanese eroge industry. New tools, engines and publishing platforms made it so much easier to create content and games, nowadays literally everyone can create a game and sell it, as long as they have the willpower to push onwards. This leads to serious market oversaturation, where high competition isn't good anymore, but becomes harmful to the whole enviroment. To keep with it, developers have to either raise more funds or adopt specific business models; a lot of studios focus on smaller projects made in shorter ammount of time, which enforcers lower quality to keep up with the demand; they make less money as well. It's very easy to slip out of circulation and a lot of developers and studios often face an issue, where they simply have to give up or close their business, because it doesn't entail them any revenue, or worse - only generates loss. It might be easier to debut on the market at the moment, but at the same time, it's a lot more difficult to stay afloat. Blessed are those, who are able to turn their hobby into a stable way to make a living.1 point -

?? Sure, Shakespeare might have coined some words and so did a few other creative writers, but for the most part, a language evolves without giving the damnedest about official standardizations and written culture. Evolution occurs mainly through the spoken language, and especially the language spoken by the masses. It has pretty much always been so in every languages. French, for example, derived from the vulgar latin spoken by the common people, not from the latin of traditional texts.1 point

I actually think they don't do it enough. Maybe because they don't have enough resources at their disposal, I don't know. It's not a matter of being respectable or not, if people use those words then they are de facto units of language bearing meaning and deserve being recorded both for description purposes and cultural preservation purposes. What is absolutely necessary is also to record when and where were those words used. Those words are precious testimonies of a certain period of time in a certain circle of people. There's nothing worth being forgotten or trashed here.1 point
