Watching Non Brits discuss Brexit.

It's finally done. I finally managed to 100% translated Bishoujo Mangekyou in its entirety. Actually it happened quite early, 20th, if I recall correctly. It took me 5 monsths and 7 days to translate the whole scrip according to my calculations. It's ben awfully rewarding and I appreciate you all sticking with me along this project, my team and I will do our best to make sure the end product is of high quality. I'll say this now, this won't be my last transaltion project, but it sure will be my last 'double-translation', so all the following projects will be translated purely from the original script and some double-script translations. Anyhoo, now that the translation's done, I am now largely free, so I can return back to what I did before starting this project. The patch release date is still TBA, but it could be done in a few months' time. Progress: Translation: 100% Editing: 20,3% QC: 3,1% Proofreading: 0%

BTW, in case it interests anyone, the idea that unqualified people shouldn’t discuss various things is something which is brought up as a downside to democracy itself. 37 million people voted in the Brexit elections, and while they live in that place and the decision ultimately affects them, how many of them actually know the impacts of such a decision? And no, ‘living there’ doesn’t automatically grant you magical insight everyone else doesn’t have. People like to say that because you live there, you should have a say how things are run. I find this an acceptable argument ... as long as those people know how things are run, and actually know what they're voting for. Otherwise I question why this automatic right is even a thing. So if millions of those people are too unknowledgeable to know the impacts, why are they qualified to dictate Government policy through their ignorance? Because they live there? What a quality and well-thought out reason. Consider Joe Doe down the road who voted based on a pack of misinformation and lies, his ignorance affected the decision the Government has made and the future of everybody in that nation. Why should this ever be acceptable? Don’t think the political parties don’t know this, which is why both sides of politics bombard the airwaves with slogans and crap aimed at the lowest common denominator. People who are educated can mostly make up their own mind, but WHA-HEY, look at all these uneducated folk we can sway with a massive scare campaign. This sort of stuff is one of the bigger downsides of democracy. Tyranny of the masses is one thing, it’s quite another when a significant portion of the majority is made up of people who don’t really know. Which is one of the reasons why the voting age should be raised to 25, btw … Now when consider all of the above, you'll start to figure out why disqualifying certain people from 'commenting' on stuff is a Pandora's box. I'm actually waiting for somebody to open it, then we'll all transition to a society led by the intellectual elite ... which will inevitably end in a revolt when that same intellectual elite start culling the population. And no, I haven't been reading too many sci-fi novels. EDIT: I've been seeing quite a few people get annoyed when outsiders start commenting on a nation's internal issues (like that ever concerns America and their citizens when discussing China. Or Russia.) This is one of a few posts I've wanted to make on the issue for a while.

So we all know there's multiple ways to help us read Japanese VNs by now. All Japanese VNs have text you can grab and display, which makes them an easy target for practicing reading. There's one downside though, visual novels are typically incredibly long, especially if you are a beginner (yes, even the shorter ones can take a while to read if you're inexperienced). I always thought this downside affected lots of people that wanted to practice reading but didn't have the time/energy to read through an entire VN in Japanese to start with. However, other mediums like manga and LNs are much more difficult due to requiring you to either constantly look at a dictionary or just know all those kanji from memory (with the exception of manga that have furigana, but those are usually aimed at younger audiences and might not be the most interesting). It felt unfair that such fun media couldn't be used as easily to study Japanese. Well luckily yesterday I was talking to a friend on discord and fanboying over the Monogatari Series with them and they ended up showing me a few tools they used to read LNs, and after that I myself looked up for ways to read manga in Japanese, and thus we come to this thread in which I'm hoping to share something useful with those of you who wish to read these mediums as a way to practice Japanese. Note: If you know any other/better software, please by all means share it! Kanjitomo Kanjitomo is an incredibly useful software to read manga on your computer. It detects kanji/words by simply hovering over them with your mouse. But not only that, it gives you the reading/meaning of those words/kanji. And lastly, if it fails to show the correct kanji, it shows you a list with similar looking kanji for you to browse, it also lets you edit the individual kanji contained in the word in case it guessed the 2nd or 3rd characters wrong, thus always letting you pick which is the right one. Some screenshots: Advantages: Easy word lookup Very customizeable Let's you actually import images and scroll through multiple images in a single folder. Also supports Chinese Disadvantages Can get laggy sometimes (mostly on startup) The zoom feature can get somewhat annoying to control Although it lets you import files, I found the file viewer annoying to use and prefer to just use some other software to open the images Download (requires Java to be installed): http://kanjitomo.net/ JGloss This software is primarily geared towards books. What it does is it lets you import .txt files (or copy text) and open them in the reader. After that it places furigana on top of all the words, and also creates a glossary of words on the right for you to look up if you need. One feature I really appreciated in it was that it only displays furigana for the first instance of a word only, forcing you to memorize the word after that (although if you want to, you can select the word and it'll look it up for you regardless). Now you might be thinking, doesn't Translation Aggregator also do something similar? While TA does indeed have these same functions, TA is mostly practical for smaller chunks of text, not whole sections of a book. Screenshots: With translation enabled: Advantages: Easy way to read large chunks of text with furigana Can use different parsers. Can also place the English translation underneath the words if needed Creates a glossary of words for an easy lookup Pretty costumizeable interface (you can change the font/size/colors/etc.) Also works with German Disadvantages: Requires you to copy the text or have a text file of the book you're reading, which doesn't always happen. Parsing is not perfect and you may find some weird results at times (but that's the same for any Japanese parser). It seems to have a certain limit of text it can display (I kept running into an error when I imported a lot of text), so you may not be able to import whole books but instead have to copy multiple chunks (they're pretty big chunks though) Download: http://jgloss.sourceforge.net/ Yomichan Yomichan is an Anki add-on that lets you read text and look up words while simultaneously being able to create an anki deck for the words you want. This tool is incredibly useful if you want to study and read a book at the same time. Screenshot: Advantages: Lets you read entire books at once (you can also copy the text) Very easy to create an anki deck with the words from the text Disadvantages No furigana on the text itself Requires you to have the book in a .txt file More useful for studying than actually reading Download (requires anki to be installed): https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/934748696 Capture2Text Capture2Text is a simple but intuitive OCR (Optic Character Recognition) program that lets you select a part of your screen to convert into text. It's useful to grab whole sentences from a specific bubble of text or a sentence from a book and automatically copy them to your clipboard, which you can then use to do whatever. If you're a translator, it makes the script writing process much easier since you don't have to manually input everything. (I don't really have any screenshots since all the software does is grab and copy text.) Advantages: Easy way to grab text from an image and paste it onto your clipboard (or someplace else) Works well in conjunction with other software like TA. Disatvantages: The recognition can fail pretty hard depending on the font used (you can easily end up with scrambled jibberish) Download: http://capture2text.sourceforge.net/ I know it's not groundbreaking and it might not even be as appealing as just grabbing text in a VN, but I find manga and LNs very fun and less tiresome to read and so these tools come in really handy for that purpose. Think of it this way, do you want to start practicing Japanese by reading an entire visual novel with more than a thousand lines from the get go, or would something smaller like a 20 page manga chapter be a little easier for starters? Of course, this doesn't mean you shouldn't try to read visual novels, they're great practice, but I think a lot of people lose themselves when starting off with them and perhaps these tools will help keep the focus on studying and memorizing things a bit more instead of just reading.

Those who talk to me regularly or pay attention to my lists will notice that one of the VNs that comes up fairly often is Draculius. This is a VN that has had a surprising amount of influence on modern VNs... or rather, the Western VN world. Oddly enough, that influence is mostly indirect rather than direct (it isn't translated, so the VN's direct influence is rather limited). The most obvious point is Grisaia... to be straight about it, it had the same writer as the Grisaia series, a fact that made me nod in recognition when I discovered it. Replaying Draculius, the points of connection are blatantly obvious... such as the fact that Misao's basic character is obviously the prototype for Makina or that Rian's characterization was the prototype for Michiru (though honestly, she is better than Michiru, lol). Zeno is Sachi's prototype (think if you added insane protectiveness and a tendency toward violence to Sachi and removed the good girl obsession). Last of all, Rika is Yumiko (except that the dependence comes out faster and Rika is a lot less weak-willed under the surface). It looks like Belche got split into multiple characters, probably because her role and characterization was so complex that building on her as is just wasn't possible (Amane, JB, and Chizuru). Now, do I even have to mention how much influence Grisaia has had on the Western community? I'd be preaching to the choir at this point, I think. A less-obvious point is Kyuuketsuki no Libra or Libra of the Vampire Princess, which is getting a localization through a Kickstarter sometime this year. To someone who played and loved Draculius, the older VN's influence on Libra is extremely obvious... Iris, who serves as an antagonist in the VN, is to some degree based on Belche (right down to her attitude toward humans and tendency toward obsessive love hidden under a cold exterior). The actual situation is a dead copy (play on Belche's special power, for those who have read the VN, lol) in the sense that both Jun in Draculius and the protagonist of Libra are young men who are the children of born vampires who died, leaving the child's mother behind, who then died before the story began. There are a number of differences of course... and I won't spoil the VN by telling you where a lot of the deeper similarities are (though I will give you a hint... the truth about the vampire hunter organizations). Other than Dies Irae, I honestly can't think of a VN that has had more impact on the community without actually being translated, and as I re-read this VN for the third time, I find more and more common points with the VNs that came later on, lol.

Agreeing to a trade and then taking advange of your partner's slipup to steal an item from them makes you an asshole, yes. When you open your MMO, you don't close reality. The things you do to other people still affect them, and still make them angry, sad, happy and everything else, just with slightly lesser impact. The only thing you gain is anonymity, as well as the ability to not face consequences for most of your actions. The fact people seem to automatically become assholes in those circunstances may or may not say something about human nature, though. I wouldn't know.

I liked it in general, but I'll never forget how the "catgirl" route inadvertently delivered the message that was the exact opposite of what it was supposedly intended to convey.

Mostly the Key Vns, I ended up dropping all the ones I tried and if you can count it as well liked then Gahkthun, dropped that one as well.

The economy isn't in tumbles, markets just don't like uncertainty. It's actually not an indication of whether the decision was a 'bad one' or a 'good one' at all, nor is it a precursor of what's to come, think of it as the market getting a tremendous shock and not knowing what things will be like in the future. Investors don't like not knowing what things will be like in the future (well, they don't 'know' in any case but they 'think they know' which is usually good enough.)

Personally, I use TA coupled with Translation Assistant to read Web Novels. That way I just need to copy the entire chapter and paste it on a new file : I recommand the "One Sentence per Line" option to have better parsing. Then thanks to translation assistant, it keeps one sentence at time in the clipboard, and you just need to go to the next one : Tried JGloss, but I prefer TA. I wonder if someone knows what WN I used for the example?

Confession: here's something that pisses me off from some people around me: picking on people who work hard just to say that their hard work is for naught. You have to have met one of them at some point. I am not talking about your boss who told you that all you learnt at your college was not important at all. I am talking about that guy, that freaking guy who while you are doing your best to get high grades for whatever reasons during your years in school or college, he goes out of his way to tell you that you are an idiot since you are wasting your life on academics and he's that smart ass who cares about his "social life" more than anything else since it "provides him with the skills needed for life" which is usually a bunch of bullcrap. I didn't know that the art of parties and outings was the way to success. And then he starts throwing the "success is not measured by your studies , it's measured by your actual work." at you. I am sorry but he is probably one of the people who won't be able to work well because of his laziness. He is not Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates of the world, he is not a genius who has no need for his academic life since he will have some original idea or a brain that is full of innovative ways of making fame and money. He doesn't have to throw his excuse which he's telling himself and his family at the guy who's working hard. Being the 3rd world country we are, there's the problem that you might actually work hard and not have any results at the end.... for some time at least. It's probably like this everywhere except the degree differs. However that doesn't mean that you shouldn't bother or work hard just because it "might" be in vain. That's exactly what being a failure is. Next up in our parade of visual novel punctuation: the interrobang. That’s right, I said the interrobang. Can you believe it?! Huh?! What the hell's an interrobang?! "Interrobang" is the term we'll borrow to describe that little dogpile of punctuation, usually represented as ?! or !?, that sits at the end of nearly every question in a visual novel. It's meant to convey incredulity, combining elements of both a question and an exclamation. And, since the typical VN's stock-in-trade is exaggerated emotion, you'll end up seeing it a lot. Because why have your characters simply ask a question when they can GODDAMN SCREAM IT at Samuel L. Jackson levels. I mentioned we're borrowing the term. The actual interrobang (‽, a ? combined with a !) is a bizarro punctuation mark crowdsourced by an ad agency back in 1962, along with the term “interrobang” itself. (If Wikipedia is to be believed, other suggested names included “QuizDing," “exclamaquest," and “exclarotive.”) It fell out of fashion after the 1960s, though, so you'll rarely see it in the wild. Still, it lurks in the Unicode of a few fonts here and there, lingering on like some creepy conjoined twins left chained to a steam pipe in the dark basement of the English language. In the meantime, we'll appropriate it here to describe its unpacked counterparts, !? and ?!. So is it “!?” or the other way around?! Now that we know what our faux interrobang does, our next concern is how it should be edited. Do we (!?) shoot first and ask questions later or (?!) vice versa? There’s little agreement among language mavens as to which is correct, and most VN scripts I’ve seen switch between the two on a whim — sometimes in the very same line. Thus, it falls to the editor and/or translator to impose some order on the situation. The simple answer: Pick one and stick with it; I don't really care which. Consistency is our primary concern here. The standard emoji character set uses !?, so you'd be entirely justified in rolling with that. Some argue that !? is also more typographically appealing, and I'd tend to agree. However... The advanced answer: My own preference is to switch between the two on a case-by-case basis, with ?! winning out 95% of the time. That's because I tend to think in terms of nested levels of punctuation, rather than a monolithic model. Which is to say, the sentence should be read structurally as: with the ! modifying a base question and turning it into an exclamation. Since that’s what the interrobang typically does, I end up using ?! in almost all instances. But there are exceptions. Imagine some friends who find out they've won a contest to meet David Hasselhoff. Mid-celebration, it occurs to them they didn't actually enter, so there's no way they should have won. Here, a base exclamatory statement is being modified into a question: (We did it!)? so !? would be the more appropriate choice. This kind of usage requires an editor or translator to make lots of judgement calls, however. If you don’t feel comfortable getting that deep into the contextual weeds, there’s absolutely no shame in going the simple route and using one option across the board. What about interrogangbangs?!?!? Last but not least, we have the situation where a character goes into full freakout mode and says things like: In these cases, make sure the first piece of punctuation aligns with the intent of original sentence — is it an exclamation or a question? — then keep the rest of the punctuation exactly as it appears. Or, if you’re opting for the simple method, don’t change a thing. Just stick with the punctuation as provided and keep on walking. It’s what The Hoff would want.

Lemme see... Clannad, Air, Kanon: I don't know how good the story is, but the art sucks, and that's a nope for me. Majikoi series, Grisaia series: Gosh, all them horrible jokes and tasteless comedy... Fate series: Drop the anime, so have no intention of trying out the vn either. Muv-Luv series: I hate mecha stuff. Rance series: I hate Sengoku-theme in general. And rape. Steins;Gate: I can't handle that weird art style. Ugh, too many... Actually, I just checked the top 50 most popular title on VNDB, and I only played 9 of them, and I have very little care about the other 41.

I would say Rewrite. I just find it plain boring. I figured since people like it, it would get better and I made myself continue, but eventually I was stalled because I just couldn't be bothered to open it anymore.

My bank emailed me telling that they predict the market is overreacting and will recover. Claims like "a new Black Friday" certainly will make the financial market turn upside down. What really happened today compared to yesterday is.... nothing. The UK will get a new PM within 3 months and then it will likely take 2 years before we will see something change. Until then the UK is part of EU and it will be business as usual. It's not like some declaration of independence where they say "we have left the EU".

Hmm. This is one where I have to disagree with you, Darbury. To me, consistency is paramount, even over the subtle additional shade of meaning you might get by carefully considering and ordering the ? and ! based on that. My preference is to pick one and go with it. I don't actually care which one, but my fingers do type ?! more naturally than !?, so in the absence of any better reason, I'd probably go with that one. But the best option might be the direction Rooke is going: avoid the issue entirely. Most VNs are filled with more punctuation than a balloon is air - they can benefit from a little puncture and subsequent depunctuation. Drop a bunch of bangs and replace them with periods (or with nothing, if they were previously part of an interrobang), and you can usually end up with something that's probably better overall anyway. Especially if, in doing so, you get to reduce all the ridiculous double-bangs down to single bangs.

Cool, never knew about that patch - like havoc said, didn't really have much interest to read two versions of the same story, so having something inclusive sounds awesome - though I question how well it meshes, content wise. I'll probably jsut wait on the +18 version myself, even if I'm missing out on nice additions from the vita version...I admit I'm ruled by base desires

Replaying Tales of Graces ƒ en NG+. A LOT more fun than my first run. I can now play on Chaos difficulty, I'm proud of myself. x) (played on Normal then Easy on my first run, shame on me) I'm trying to be a little more throughout, and in fact, I'm mid-game and I just passed what it took me to finish the game on my first playthrough. (33h for the main part, and 42h with L&L) Wasn't that hyped when I decided to play again (didn't like the story as much as the other Tales of, and wasn't that good with the gameplay), but now I regret nothing! Also, perhaps it's because I'm playing it now, but I think Graces ƒ skits are the funniest of the series!
