Final update: Due to the amount of hate comments that have came in (and been deleted) surrounding our delay of OUR patch I have decided to not only disable comments but to also stop giving out updates. The amount of conceited people that think our project revolves around them is disgusting. Apparently no updates are better than updates. Apologies for wasting my own time trying to keep you all in the loop while we do what we think is best for OUR patch. We’re the ones who have wasted 3 years of our lives on such a shit community. What the fuck is wrong with people? Is it seriously that fucking difficult to not act entitled to shit? To not whine and bitch immediately? To be patient? I honestly don't blame them for going silent, when every comment is "lol so patch when?" "Omg another delay? Y can't u just use old patch" "wow I've been waiting so long pls hurry" it's honestly retarded. Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't release anything now.3 points -

Writing more powerful sentences
Funnerific and one other reacted to Fred the Barber for a blog entry
Last time I talked about trade-offs in editing and high-level motifs; macro-scale stuff. This time, I want to talk about a micro-scale topic: how to make an individual line better. As before, I'll be demonstrating this with examples drawn from recent editing experience. Before writing this post, I went around looking for other people talking about similar things, and I found this reference: http://kristensguide.com/Writing/powerful_sentences.asp. Frankly, it's great; probably better than what I have, especially in terms of breadth of topics. Give it a read and get your editing learning on. For this post, I'm going to deep dive into one single topic mentioned there, though, for which I've been saving up examples: putting the first and last words of your sentence to good use. The first and last words of a sentence are powerful. They're memorable. Forgetting the middle of a sentence is natural, so put a word at the end of a sentence when you really, really want that one word to be remembered. Okay, so what did you get from that last paragraph. I hope it was "first", "powerful", "memorable", "forgetting", and "remembered", because that's the point of this blog post. Anyway, let's look at some examples from my recent edits to Majo Koi Nikki, some to the prologue patch we're about to release, and some later. I'll point out other things that I changed as well and why, but this one point is going to be the running theme. Original: Looking in the mirror, she pondered for a second and answered with a shy smile on her face. Potential problems: - "on her face" is extraneous - that extraneous phrase is squatting on valuable real estate at the end of the sentence. Mine: Looking in the mirror, she pondered for a second, and then she answered with a shy smile. Changes: - drop "on her face" (for both reasons above - it's less verbose, and now I get "smile" as the last word in the sentence, which is great) - the comma after "she ponders for a second" is intended to give the reader that same mental pause as "she" has, to better set up the last part - "then she" somehow pushes you out of that mental pause and into the most important part: that shy smile, lingering at the end of the sentence. Original: Tokeizaka-san irritatedly flips through the book, but her hand stops suddenly. Potential problems: - With the benefit of spell-check, "irritatedly" => irritably - "suddenly" is often overused I actually really like the original; if you left it alone, aside from the spell-check correction, I wouldn't fault you for it. The verbs are great, "irritably" is a good use of a modifier, and the sentence communicates multiple events very concisely. But there's always room for improvement. Mine: Irritated, Tokeizaka-san flips through the book, until her hand suddenly stops. Changes: - Drop "suddenly." "Stops" is strong enough to carry that feeling of suddenness on its own, so "suddenly" is only making things weaker. I've also noticed a tendency for raw JP translations to overuse "suddenly", which makes me especially biased to remove it. It's the typical problem of overuse: if everything is happening suddenly, it might as well all be happening normally. - Move those good words, "irritably" and "stops" to the memorable points of the sentence. "Stops" we got for free, "irritably" requires a small bit of juggling. Unfortunately, Tokeizaka-san's family name is a bit unwieldy at best; better to bury it in the middle of the sentence and let the nice, emotive words take pride of place. - Swapping "but" for "until" made for a clearer plot to the sentence, I thought. Original: - The colorful beauty article are displayed neatly. Potential problems: - Engrish - Passive voice - Not flashy enough Mine: - Iridescent beauty products dot the shelves, arranged with flawless precision. On that last potential problem: normally my style is pretty spare. My typical goal is to drop adjectives and adverbs, and make verbs and nouns stronger to carry the weight of description, without going overboard on vocabulary. More often than not, I'm trying to make long sentences shorter and punchier. I didn't do that here. For context on why, it would help for you to hear the ridiculously high-brow BGM accompanying this scene and see the gorgeous background art. So, here: Background: BGM: Equally important for context, you need to know about the surrounding narration: basically, the narrator is currently marveling at just how amazing this beauty parlor is. One of the benefits of generally being spare with your adjectives and adverbs is that they then work a lot better when you actually do pull them out. A good mental model is that you have a budget: don't spend your nice words if you don't need to. Only pull them out when you're going for the razzle dazzle. The analogy breaks down fast, but basically, if you're constantly using flowery language and overdecorating the ordinary scenes, nobody's going to be impressed when something extraordinary happens, just like the overuse of "suddenly" I mentioned earlier. Since this actually is an extraordinary moment for our narrator, I'm spending a few nice words now. And again, I want to call attention to the first and last words of the sentence. Those are strong places in a sentence (or, especially in the case of a VN, a line). Previously there were pretty weak words there ("The colorful" and "neatly"); now we've got "iridescent" and "precision". Good words in good places. One last thing to mention. I wrote each of these up in the middle of editing, and then later edited that up into a blog post. I made changes to the edited line itself in the process of writing all this stuff up, which made it better. In fact, I even noticed a problem while writing up this blog post and further refined the line. You'll never know what it was (probably). The point being, simply spending time reflecting on an edit, and especially writing down your observations and motivations for certain choices, will help you do better work. You don't have to be this thorough all the time (I certainly am not), but every time you do an exercise like that, you'll learn from it, and then you can write up your own blog post and teach me something.2 points -
New front site is live! Note: logins are restricted to a closed beta, but you can go through the site, now. Please see this blog post: http://fuwanovel.net/2016/07/new-fuwanovel-site/ Feedback Survey If you have a second, I would really appreciate your feedback on the new site. You can find a quick survey here. 7/10 Updates Fixed/Addressed: @Nosebleed - Change the rounded sort-by-release-type section on http://fuwanovel.net/visual-novels-browse/ - Um. No. But thanks. I'd prefer to see you suffer. @Silvz- "New releases are showing stuff from 2014" - I mentioned this in my post. Right now I've only uploaded a handful of games to see how the site does under load. @Silvz - Moving twitter up - I'll definitely play around with this over time. Right now the twitter widget isn't working very well, anyway, so I'm going to eventually scope out other options. @Kenshin_sama - Strange options in the feedback survey - If it was perfectly implemented at-launch, it just wouldn't have that buggy Fuwanovel goodness. ; P @Silvz - Search bars for custom post types (reviews, VNs, etc.) - Excellent point. Should be coming later today. @kingdomcome - Fixed with a crappy, temp fix. Thanks! @Decay - Forums VNTS menu item broken - Fixed! @Decay - One Small Fire Review is missing - Restored! @Decay - VNs retain odd information - Yep. Post time is actually useful: it'll be used to mark the game's or patch's release, so that'll stay. Author, however, is something a bit more complicated. It'll either be removed, or it'll be switched to represent the patch or publisher of the game. @Decay - SonoHana games reviews section oddities - Yep. I've already addressed that in each of the Sono Hana games' description section. It'll be specific to the SonoHana games, and isn't something I expect to do with any other games or series. @Decay - Game page layout with possible sidebar - I agree with you, and that's been my plan for the games pages: having an integrated sidebar with those bits that runs down the right side of the page, while removing the true sidebars. That's why the individual VN pages' sidebar is empty atm. In-Progress: @Amuzie - Request Desktop Site - Hm. You can do this on your phone's browser, but you're looking for a link/button on the site itself to do that, right? That's something I'll need to look into. Right now the site is set up to be responsive by design. @Decay - Review Header Images Problem - I'll get them all straightened out today. I have to edit some stuff about each review, anyway @Decay - Limitations of WP games pages vs database - Well-said, and exactly right. A fuller database implementation IS coming, but it's something we're going to need to save up for. I collected a grand total of 22 bids to do the front site coding, and for what we wanted, the bill was going to be between $7000 for a relatively inexperienced coder to $25,000 for a mid-to-top-ish tier developer. (Just going to stop and point out that @Nayleen would absolutely qualify as top-tier, and consistently donates an unbelievable amount of time to help us out. We're very, very lucky to have you, Nay. Thank you for all you do.) I'm scoping out custom coding to get a custom plugin to pull from a custom games DB and feed into a design template we can modify at any time. So that's where we're headed. At some point when things settle down and I can publish an updated site financial report, I'll try and put all of this down on paper. But, yeah, we're saving up for that. This is not the final solution. 7/12 Updates More Updates: Back-end permissions are all set up Email system is up and working. (Well. Probably working. Updated sidebar game picks and July's Game of the Month Rough-ish and prob temp fix for front page slider Some limited updates to VNTL-Moon Some aesthetic fixes Went through and fixed all FuwaReviews. If @solidbatman or @Decay want me to re-do a few banners to 16:9s (or so), just let me know which ones. I think the long banners are mostly okay. Some of Ryechu's are ugly, now, but they're part of the nukige series and I didn't feel like looking around for alternatives. The other one I can remember, Decay's Euphoria, actually looks kinda cool. But just let me know. Updated reviews back-end Minor emotional breakdown Figured out the problem with the Twitter section on homepage (Answer: Twitter sucks) Fixed and updated some podcast issues Fixed reviews hub display bug on really, really old android devices Tweaked some settings to improve performance Sat despondently in a near-empty room, pondering the Academy section VNTS podcast now has almost 700 downloads! (link) Next Up: Import email subscriber lists Customize and add search options Take a look at Decay's game page stuff Set up alternate layout options for custom post types to remove authors (etc.) from game pages and the like2 points

Do you drink green tea?
Narcosis and one other reacted to Forgetful Frank for a topic
Hi, everyone! I've been busy (and still am to come extent) with a bunch of different stuff, so I haven't been as active on the forums as I would have liked to be these few months. This is just a simple random question that popped in my head while I was drinking some, and I was wondering how many of you also drink green tea on a regular basis, and if so, what is your favourite blend? Personally, I do drink green tea on a regular basis, have been since last year. I probably don't drink as much water as I should, so I decided to try out green tea to help bring balance to that, to which it has! My favourite so far, is just normal green tea with lemon, although honey and camomile comes quite close. I do enjoy jasmine tea at times also, however my significant other disagrees with my taste on that, saying it tastes like she's drinking perfume to her, to which I can somewhat see what she means, but I happen to like it. So what about you? What are your favourite blends? I'd love to know, and possibly get some ideas on what different ones I could try sometime. These are the blends I've tried so far in no particular order: Green Tea Lemon Jasmine Honey and Camomile Orange and Lotus Flower I look forward to reading some of your opinions. I'd like to add that if you haven't tried green tea yet, I would definitely recommend it. Even if you don't drink regular tea (which I do not) you should definitely give it a go if you're interested. Not to mention it's very healthy, especially compared to normal tea where you add milk and sugar. If you're someone like me who struggles to drink a lot of water throughout your day, it's definitely a pretty good viable alternative to ensuring you're properly hydrated and not drinking too much fizzy.2 points -

I mean, most internet services come with some pretty good filtering tools. If they want, they could just turn off comments on their site and do things at their own pace. Tokyo Babel Translation Discussion
Suzu Fanatic and one other reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
They're not. They're language and culture dependent. My personal theory is that (heh) certain people are tone deaf and cannot accurately replicate sounds, and so without a certain amount of cultural familiarity you wouldn't know what the hell some of them mean. Take a rooster - 'Cockle doodle do' in the West and kokekokko in Japanese. Wan Wan vs bark bark for a dog. Kon for a fox vs ... whatever the hell it is in English. They are not instantly recognisable as animal sounds. So yes, it's perfectly normal to translate onomatopoeia, because many Japanese onomatopoeia would make no sense in English. Especially in cases where there is no English equivalent, like in (I assume) the above. And considering replicating sounds involves (on occasion) making up words, it's perfectly okay to translate them into 'made up' words. It's understandable that you're frustrated with the translation, the problem is that there isn't a Global language to translate stories into for everyone. There should be a bigger French translation community, so it can be translated into French also.2 points -

Luna Translations Weekly Update 8
Forgetful Frank reacted to Aizen-Sama for a blog entry
What up, everyone. Here we go with the 8th weekly update. Welp, two months may have passed but the progress done until now has been pretty nice if I say so myself. This week has been rather slow, so I apologize for that. We have recruited our twentieth member, @Torky who will help us in the Majo Koi Team as a Translator to fill our current MIA (but that will definitely be back, work issues don't let them be with us atm) translators, which are @Hasa and @RaurosFalls. On a side and personal note, I'll be working as a QC for Bishoujo Mangekyou in Euphemic Translations, so that's that. ANyways, let's get straight into the update, shall we? Witch's Garden The prologue has been completely TLC'd. The common route is already completed by 30% in that aspect and Misumi's and Ririko's routes have started to receive TLC as well. Ayari's route has had some TLC completed as well, but it will be stalled and Misumi + Ririko will have priority, since they belong to our future 50% game patch. The editing has been progressing rather slowly, but it will resume this week to complete the prologue. Currently the route being translated is Eclairs. We have an updated progress board in our website and... well... I think that's it for the news. I'll just post the numbers below: Majo Koi Nikki Progress has advanced rather slowly in terms of translation. Editing has been resumed and we've moved on from the prologue to the common route of the game. We'll post an updated progress board as well as soon as we completely figure the route's numbers out, since they are pretty bad divided and it's pretty difficult to tell them apart. Regarding the partial patch, the only thing left is to repack the translated interface images and we'll be pretty much done with it and be ready for releasing it. We're sorry for the delay, hehe. The numbers are below: DISCLAIMER: THESE AREN'T THE EXACT NUMBERS, WE'RE STILL FIGURING OUT ROUTES AND OTHER STUFF. DISCLAIMER 2: THOSE 99% ON BOTH EDITING AND TL OF THE PROLOGUE ARE BECAUSE THE TRIAL PATCH HAS EXTRA LINES. WE'LL TAKE CARE OF THAT ASAP, THE FULL GAME'S PROLOGUE LINES HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY TRANSLATED. Anyways, I think that's all for this week. Thanks for reading, as always, and have a nice week everyone.1 point -
Re:zero discussion (and some other non important Summer 2016 anime)
Kenshin_sama reacted to Jun Inoue for a topic
It is unique. Also, episode 15 just did a super weird turn. Not a plot twist, or that sort of surprise. Rather, something that we all thought to be background noise has suddenly come into full glory, slapped us on the face hard, peed on us, and then mind-fucked us. It feels as if the anime suddenly became another one, the focus of the arc radically changing, the few episodes we had seen and its core topic suddenly feeling very silly and non-important. If I had to compare it to smth you might know about, it's like when in One Piece... It's like when Lost was still in TV, and after smth super important happened, people would be super shocked about it and theorise/discuss it until the next episode came in. Btw, you might be making a mistake in waiting to watch Re:Zero when it's completed. In 99% of series it doesn't matter at all. But, lately, I feel that the doubts and theories you make in your head are part of the tension and excitement of the series. Waiting for when you can just watch everything might kill that whole aspect.1 point -

What is the most important part in a Visual Novel for you?
Hanny reacted to Turnip Sensei for a topic
I've always felt like it's not that hard to get used to "bad" art or music, even bad voice acting can be turned off. But getting used to bad or uninteresting story is almost impossible for me and mostly not worth it at all. VN with good story and bad everything else is still a good story, but pretty VN with abysmal story is still just bad. Aesthetics don't make up for the content. Unless it's a nukige or something, but I don't count them in this case, and because I don't read them. So yeah, story is still the king for me, even in a visual media like VNs.1 point
