  1. Today is a memorable day, as i received my first like from tay. The feeling is quite okay, as it's uplifted my day. This feeling is here to stay, i remember as if it happened... well, today. I was going about my way on this beautiful morning in july may, when along my way, i saw a thread from tay. he wanted a way, to hear what people had to say. While thinking "Okay", i said what i wanted to say. Don't know if what i had to say will be able to persuade, but i went on my way, and continued my day. what i can take away, from the generosity from tay is that he liked the way my comments point was made. so thank you tay, for making my day. \ /

  2. It feels kinda like option 9 fits more if you don't really know much about a specific VN or VNs at all. That's because it gives info of the VN before it throws walkthrough and 100% saves at you. Making the reader want to actually play it them self. But for someone that knows what it/they are it kinda feels like giving them info on walkthroughs and save files quicker will make things easier for them. But seeing as Fuwanovels goal is to get new people into VNs, giving them info what a VN is about feels more important than 100% save files. IMO of course.

Well, hello there, and welcome everyone, my name is...of not importance, what's more important, is to present myself : i'm one of the members of the fuwachat mod, as well as not a tsundere, i was also member of the VN reading club (even if now it's dead) and, well, it's been a long time since i didn't open a serious thread, so, i'm introducing to you a new concept, called Le baguette debate(Yes yes, i know, don't worry...heck, Victor Hugo is gonna rape me if i don't correct myself, but i don't care!) Basically, even if the title may seem funny, it's a serious rendez-vous, and every week, we'll battle with all our might to have a better understanding of some concepts only found in visual novels, and what's a better place than an organized structure? Every week, i'll throw a new thread, launching a new debate, it can be about everything as long as it is related to visual novels, you are free to share whatever opinion you think about the subject, we have 100% freedom of speech, and if really things start to derail, i have my banstrong cannons...oh wait i have no powers here? . Well, i'm pretty sure our fine fuwagestapo will help me keep this thread as clean and civilized as possible. If it's successful, i'll do Anime and Games edition, but for now, i'll concentrate on visual novels...Because we are a VN community, mostly. so, now i can start with our first subject : Are Nukige able to have a great story? For many years now, many, many VNs came to the west, most of us are, indeed, filled with porn, but some of them are specialized in porn, we call them, nukige, they are VNs filled with all kind of kinks, with basically dozens of H-scenes, and generally serves only as fap material, BUT, we've also seen some...true, rare but existent Nukige who came out packed with a rather strong story, despise the ridiculous amount of porn it packs, and, well, the question is simple, it's not about H-scenes in VN, but do you believe that a Nukige can pack out a story as strong as a normal VN like steins;gate. And don't the fact these VNs, as nukige, hinders any try at creating a profound and interesting plot? Thank you all, and may the force be with you.

    It's really weird, as it's almost like another language. Because I'm so used to seeing American spelling as well, I easily switch from one mode to the other. As you're likely not used to seeing regular English spelling, you wouldn't have been fluent in it so I can understand why it would be so hard for you. Yes, quite a few still needed to be corrected after your edits, but I've mostly automated that process with my own programming scripts since the bulk of my editors use American spelling. For what it's worth, I was quite pleased that I was able to translate the explanation of the theory of relativity and am sorry it didn't flow to your liking But then, that's why I paid you all those peanuts to improve it.

  9. Sadly, I don't read moon runes, so I have no idea what they're saying about it either on Twitter or their website, aside from "Virtual Reality Story". The announcement tweet got retweeted by Sekai Project really quickly, and of course they brought over World End Economica (or, you know, mostly brought it over...) so I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they're picking it up for an English release.   10. ... exactly how many times have I mentioned that I'm busy lately...? Seriously. I'm in the middle of VN withdrawal for the first time in over three years... and I'm realizing how addicted I am. I'd be perfectly happy to play a kusoge for the second time, at the moment... if I had the time. The best I can do these days is drop in for a few minutes and maybe a quick post or two. Considering that I originally started this style of work because it made me enough money in a short enough period of time to both support me and my habits (gaming, anime, books, and importing VNs) while leaving me time to actually enjoy them... Unfortunately, my choice seems to be backfiring for the second time in five years. If anything, this time is worse, because I actually failed to deliver for the first time in the last decade. Anyway, enough complaints... While I have the time, I'm going to list up the VNs I plan to read from July's releases, when they are released: Tsumikui (maybe, and only maybe because it is an otomege, and good otomege are rarer than kamige charage) Ojousama no Hanbun wa Ren'ai de Dekiteimasu Senren Banka (obviously) Muramasa: Shokuzai Hen (new Muramasa content? Whoohoo!) Aristear Remain Floral Flowlove (Saga Planets' games since Hatsuyuki Sakura have been much weaker... but I'll probably still give it a chance) Amatsutsumi (Purple Software has been on a roll with most of their releases in recent years... so I'm definitely playing this one) Kimi to Yumemishi (new company... hopefully it will be interesting)

  11. No, but you should consider the experience of people who are browsing fuwanovel with the intention of learning about VNs and where to get them. To be honest, I think that bar looks kind of ridiculous up there at the top, alone. That's why I proposed putting the walkthrough/savefile/tech help thingy alongside the patch/game download and info, and I prefer it under the description because I feel like for a whole lot of people, the description and general game info is going to be the most important part. It's still just a quick scroll down to find this info. Putting it right up top is just aesthetically displeasing to me and also sort of confuses the objective of the site.

  15. Sometimes, something lands on your plate that makes no sense. If you're lucky, it may be a single line that makes no sense as it is written, but you can figure it out and fix it from context. If you're unlucky, it might be a whole passage that doesn't fit together quite right, or something that just doesn't hang together to present a consistent plot. As the editor, it's your responsibility to turn that line or passage into something that makes sense. Sometimes you can manage it yourself with enough brainpower. Sometimes you should ask the original translator, another editor, another translator, or a TLC to help, if you simply cannot hit on an obviously-correct, logical interpretation. Ultimately, though, you are responsible for seeing it through. You have to land that joke. Nobody else is going to do it for you. I present to you the following independent, unimportant passage from the raw To Heart 2 translation. This is one of the night scenes, which are mostly short throwaway gags featuring the protagonist, at home alone, being silly. Full context for this scene: the protagonist can't sleep and has picked a 'difficult book' off his shelf to try to put himself to sleep. Wat What all needs to be done here: The joke doesn't make sense (at least, it doesn't to me; you might be smarter than I am and able to get it immediately). There's some Engrish to be cleaned up (That "What what...?" line, especially, which sounds like it's straight from an old hip-hop song, not the utterance of a donkan harem protagonist about to read a book on special relativity), and there's ample opportunity to make the phrasing more natural. Once the nature of the joke is understood, it turns out its timing can probably be improved as well. It actually took me a couple of rewrites before I finally grasped the nature of the joke, and then I was able to both clean up the language and land it properly. It's frankly still not all that funny, but hey, a not-that-funny joke is still better than nonsense. Okay, much more readable, and I think you can actually understand the joke when reading it (you can, right? please tell me you can.). Aside from making it understandable: I deferred the idiotic non sequitur to the last line of the text-within-the-text, since it's the setup for the punchline on the last line and I wanted to get them closer together, since any time between these two is time people will spend being confused. Being a geek, I also decided to add a little more to the special relativity explanation to try to make it more clear, mostly so that it didn't look like the idiocy was endemic to the text, but rather was isolated to that final statement. For that last part, I ended up shuffling some text around, but it's not voiced text so this is really no big deal. You'll probably want to shuffle around whole lines, rarely, so be prepared to do that, for reasons like this one. Lastly, and most importantly, I tried to make the whole book-inside-the-VN passage flow as though it were a single logical explanation (you know; like a scientific-minded book normally would deliver). This is crucial for making the non sequitur at the end more jarring, and thus making the joke work (to the extent that it does). That last one is really the key, and it's applicable to more than just jokes or short passages like this. It's easy to get hung up on fixing individual lines and then miss the big picture. Lines are connected to make scenes. Scenes are connected to make the VN. Each level of that chain needs to fit together to make sense, and as the editor, you're on the line for that. As I'm writing this blog post, I realize there's at least one error in the "final" text I delivered up above: inconsistent capitalization of Theory of Relativity. Possibly more problems as well that I'm not seeing, and certainly there's room for improvement. Well, hopefully QA caught that grammar problem. I wasn't delighted with the result, but nonetheless, this was a good time to move on. This joke isn't going to be winning Olympic gold with such a shaky landing, but at least it does land instead of flying off on its own somewhere, leaving us behind and horribly confused. That's good enough for this filler scene. Everything can always be made better, and you can spend an eternity making something a little bit better all the time, but then nobody will ever actually see your work. You need to realize when to step back from something and say "It's good enough; ship it." Bottom line, if you're playing To Heart 2 and you get to a scene where the protagonist is picking a book to put him to sleep, take the science trivia book instead. That joke was funnier to begin with.

    This whole talk is more about pushing beyond those boundaries, no matter what. OP is right, tho - majority of japanese companies can file an official C&D, but it's more than often where it ends at; they usually don't have that kind of money to pursue international lawsuits, or they feel it's not really worth it, as they could pump cash into a new project instead wasting it on petty squabbles. From my perspective, for those who do know at least a bit of english, it might be a lot more foreesable to actually hire a professional EN/JP TL and reach the translators/group to actually initiate official translations, rather than diss fans; in overall, when someone actually hands you work you could actually use to your benefit, it's incredibly ridiculous to outright refuse; those who do, definitely don't know how to handle business opportunities.

  17. I think something like this should be done on a case by case basis, depending on the author's intent. I'm all for educating readers on Japanese culture, but here we had a scene where the only point was "we'll have you dress like a bitch as a penalty" and the Japanese idol referenced was so obscure in the west you can't even look her up, so the joke (and the very point) would've been lost completely. If the target of the reference was in any way important to the image, I would preserve the original, but the only thing that was referenced here was "dressing bitchy" and Miley Cyrus was just too perfect to express that point.

  18. What up people. I'm here again with the spicy weekly news as always. Majo Koi Nikki Translation progress has recuperated now, since @Hasa is back again with full force. Alice's route is progressing as well as Mii's and the second part of the prologue after the OP. Regarding the partial patch, it's basically finished at this point (just some buttons left to translate and we're good to go). We decided to delay its release date. Sorry about that, but shit happens. Editing progress has been slow, but now that I'm back from vacation in Portugal (nice country btw) I'll start editing as well. Progress Translation 24% - (9857/40394) Editing 13% - (5234/40394) Witch's Garden Translation keeps progressing and we added a new TLC to the team, making it 4 people checking the translation text at the moment. Editing is progressing slowly at the moment because we want to TLC a big batch of text before letting them work. The most probable thing is that our 50% game patch release will come out by the end of the year or so, and it will contain interface, prologue, common, Ririko and Misumi routes. Progress Translation (yes, there has been a slight progress here) - 63% (42410/67197) TLC - 8% (5354/67197) That's all. Cya next week peeps and have a nice day.

  21. Yes, I feel that would be more fair, as the game is originally an ergoe, meaning the 18+ content should at the very least have the same priority as the all ages release. Getting out the all ages first, the coming out with the patch is a backwards way of handling eroge releases.

Not a huge fan of that VN myself, but it's short enough that you can can comfortably form your own opinion on it without wasting too much of your time. Personally though, I'd give Grisaia no Kajitsu a spin since it seems that you haven't read it.

  38. People value 10/10s differently. I, for instance, use them to rate things completely subjectively, basing the rating entirely on my enjoyment. This can mean that abominations with terrible pace like CLANNAD, most of which I thought was average, can still get a 10/10 from me based entirely on how much I enjoyed the latter parts of it. I'm sure there are others, however, who would try to examine the writing, the interface and many other aspects I couldn't give a rat's arse about. To surmise, a 10/10's actual value and meaning varies from person to person. To me, it was an "incomparably enjoyable experience"; to you, I'd guess it's something like "it was flawless", and to others it could be something different.

This month turned out to be more of a coding month than a script-writing month for me. After countless, sleepless nights of trying to figure things out, I'm proud to say that I managed to put together and code most of the GUI for SoulSet together - our Start Menu, Save/Load screens, Settings, Yes/No prompts, Galleries and a Log/Text History screen (in which I still need to figure out how to delete the default Ren'py menu, because I swear it's not supposed to be there). I also managed to add an animated, pulsing icon for indicating that the text can be advanced. You can't see the animation of it on the screens, but believe me, it's blinking! And while I already mentioned Galleries - SoulSet is officially going to have a total 3 of those. You'll be able to access a CG Gallery, a Background Gallery and an Ending Gallery, which should be ideal for keeping track of the endings you've seen and how many more you still have left to witness. (All of the art and endings will unlock only after stumbling upon them in the game, of course.) I also converted all of the character sprites into their .png forms (drawing them is one thing! Saving them on your drive for proper use is another!) Along with all of the sizes, outfits and different expressions, it ended up being over 2000 files. After coding them into the script, along with their blinking animations, it turned out to be almost 15k lines of code for defining the sprites alone. For reference, that's ¾ of the size of our demo. Something at the back of my mind is telling me that I might have overdone it a bit... Speaking of sprites - we decided to change the sizes of the default ones a little bit. In the demo, the characters were shown from the waist up; now we'll be able to see a portion of their thighs. This decision was mainly influenced by the addition of towel sprites, since it seemed like a waste when those were cut-off too high. In terms of GUI, all that's left for me to do is design and code custom choice buttons and then add all of the Gallery items, once I place them in the actual script. I didn't manage to make much progress with the script itself while I was busy with coding, but I'm already on 90% of Shira's Bad Route at this point of writing. MstMori and Marcianek have been continuing work on interior and exterior backgrounds, respectively. We decided to re-draw some backgrounds from the demo to keep things more consistent with the newer versions for the full version of the game, so look forward to those! Lastly, our dear supporter and songwriter Teofilo has been to Anime Messe Berlin this past month and he commissioned some wonderful people for SoulSet fanarts!   41. World-renowned novelist and translator Umberto Eco would undoubtedly support Conjueror on this one. I'll direct you to the section "Sameness in Reference" in his essay collection Experiences in Translation, pages 14-17, where he talks about his own translators handling a scene from Foucault's Pendulum. Eco's original describes the scenery using a literature reference to a hedge which would only be recognizable to Italians. He basically told all his translators to put some literature reference that would be understood by a native speaker of their language, even if it was to something not literally depicted in the original (e.g., add a freaking castle or a tree or whatever instead of a hedge, for all he cared), because the important thing was to keep some recognizable literary reference, not the specifics of the scenery. The English translation, for instance, made a Keats reference. On a personal note, I recently edited a reference to a mid-90s Japanese pop song by some band I've certainly never heard of (and mad props to the TL for recognizing the reference, seriously...) into a Bruno Mars reference, so that you could understand that the character was kinda singing a pop song, not spouting complete nonsense. It was completely incomprehensible before. Now it's understandable. It's pretty obvious which is the better translation.

  43. Watched Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge. It's very rare for me watch a show where literally every character is likeable, but this show did it. It was a joy to watch every single episode, and my only regret is that it had to end. If you're looking for a fun, easy going slice of life that doesn't revolve around cute girls doing cute things, this is the show for you.

  46. Usually, onomatopoeia are translated by something like *stare* *munch* *yawn* etc. I may be wrong but you still translated a japanese onomatopoeia with a weird english/american slang... Same for Yummers. I can understand what "yummy" means (even though I saw this word only once in midle school, I still remember it) but that was the first time I see Yummers. As for Grinnity, here is what I got: https://www.google.fr/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=Grinnity+traduction and as you can see, it was mostly about TB. Sounded like this word only existed in TB. And that's not only a matter about grinnity and such, because so far, most of the slang I heard in japanese were understandable for a foreigner, while those translated tend to be not. I can look at the game one more time if you really want examples. And lastly, It seems that you didn't understand what I meant, I was not talking about your experience in life, but your way of translating. So far I thought that when MG released a game, the target audience was all around the world. TB tends to be too much americanized, with too much hard slang than the game seems to require. While reading TB, I can't help but think that the main target audience was only the native speaker, that's why I'm disappointed, that's all.

  47. So, first of all, I think the distinction between "localization" and "translation" is bullshit. Rather, there's more like a continuum of how thoroughly translated a text is. Native English speakers are going to prefer something farther along the thoroughness spectrum for an English translation, and it should be obvious why: you want to read something that is maximally natural to you, because it's easier on your brain. Reading something in your native language that sounds completely bizarre is confusing and upsetting. It takes you out of the story. Probably my only real contribution to this discussion: it creates vastly more cognitive dissonance for us native English speakers to read stilted, unnatural English than it would for somebody who doesn't speak English at a native level. You're already reading something that's a little weird to you, so you notice less of the additional weirdness of a poor translation. We're reading something that should be second nature, but it keeps tripping us up because it's not sufficiently translated.
