  1. Well, MG is full of passionate people who are not driven entirely by profit. It's actually pretty crazy how much of critically acclaimed but business-wise risky titles they localized so far. I just pray they are able to keep it up since most of the stuff I really want to tl is in the pretty risky category too (please buy good games instead of Sakura Spirit, people).

  2. Hi! So, we have a completely different release and marketing schedule for Japan and overseas. The reason Vol.2 has been announced and preorders opened in Japan is that the physical release of Vol.1 was last Friday, and the promotion for Vol.2 was prepared in light of that. We haven't started promoting Vol.2 overseas yet for a number of reasons; for example, we're still reviewing all the feedback we got about Vol.1 and figuring out how to approach Vol.2's release in light of that, also, we're going to be utilizing Indiegogo again essentially as a pre-order platform for the game (more on our reasoning for this will come when the campaign is announced), but not all of the goods, etc. have been completely prepared yet so we've held off on an opening date announcement for that (but it's coming soon!). It has nothing to do with our relationship with or standing in the Western VN community, nor with the sales of Vol.1. As far as the tapestry is concerned, our contract with Sofmap prevented us from being able to offer it overseas. I'm glad you like the design, and it's unfortunate we couldn't make it more easily available, but there's literally nothing we could do about that. I've mentioned it before, but we're certainly not affiliated in any way with anyone trying to guilt people into buying our products or anything remotely like that. At this point the only person speaking for Frontwing outside of official social media accounts is me. To be perfectly honest, it's a bit disheartening to me that people still think of us like the OP does, but in a way, that just means I'm not doing my job well enough, so I do apologize for that. Lastly, (criticism of the pricing model and format of the H-scenes aside) while Corona Blossom may not be a genre-changing masterpiece, I think the reviews for Vol.1 on Steam and other sites show that at the very least the game doesn't "suck"!

  3. If you were in the known, then in the future I respectfully suggest that you should refrain from using reprehensible "buzzwords" and ill-fitted terminologies that might lead to some unfortunate confusions. Using the term "shill" in reference to someone that is clearly not an employee of such honorable, remarkable and hospitable company is truly the lowest of the low and reveals an utter lack of responsability towards the weight that one's own impetuous words might have on others. Have you by any chance played the greatness that is Corona Blossom Vol.1: Gift From the Galaxy, mayhap? Or are you making some baseless conjonctures like almost everybody else's that has some negative things to say about it? Listen, Corona Blossom Vol.1: Gift From the Galaxy is a good Kinetic Novel that should take on average ~8 hours to finish, if Vol.1 is indicative of the length of the subsequent Vol.2 and Vol.3 then this should bring the complete length to a total of ~25 hours, so 30 USD for such sublime experience is truly a Gift From the Galaxy! Might I inquire, how would you know about anything related to any of what you just so irreverently claimed? You just admited yourself, here: That you have not even deigned to honor the game by playing it and yet it seems that your prejudiced mind has already passed judgement on it: "Frontwing fanatic tendency"? No, I am a True VN Fan™ and I will defend the honor of any VN companies that have proven themselves over the years by making fanastic VNs, wether it be Frontwing, âge, Eufonie, Key, Liar-soft, Makura, Minato Soft, Nitro+, propeller, Pulltop, Purple Software, Regista, Saga Planets, sprite, Type-Moon, Yuzu Soft and so many others!

  6. People usually have the wrong view of learning Japanese for visual novels: You don't learn Japanese so you can read untranslated visual novels. Instead you read untranslated visual novels as an excercise for learning Japanese. So you don't waste your time on reading porn light fiction anymore, you spend your valuable spare time for something useful and educational and still have fun at the same time. Hint: Might also help to convince your parents to buy you tons of eroge...

  8. Indeed, if you are going to learn Japanese strictly for reading VNs, learn the kana + all the grammar inside out, and you are good to go. Text hookers, which will let you look up words/kanji you don't know, and let you read furigana, (small hiragana/katakana symbols displayed above the kanji, telling you how it's read,) will make it quite simple. For instance, let's say you know what なまえ (namae=name) means, but you don't recognize 名前, you can the read the furigana spelling and kind of skip the kanji. This is not a recommended method of learning Japanese, but if you literally just want to be able to get through unTLed VNS, then it should be enough for at least easy - medium VNs.

  9. There being 50,000 kanji doesn't really have much on a bearing on how many are actually used. Still a large number though; I think 2136 something have been gone through by the end of high school, and most visual novels use at least like 200 more. Not necessarily a huge problem with text hookers though.

  11. Well I started learning Japanese just to read VNs and then at some point it kinda became like a personal goal. If you really enjoy doing something you don't see it as a tedious task, like you said, once it became a hobby is just a fun thing to do, for instance like it would be learning to play an instrument, it takes a lot of time and effort but people don't feel or see it that way, learning is also part of the process and they are having fun while doing it. The same thing applies to learning a language not just Japanese.

  12. This list won't feature the VNs in order of "how good they are". Rating them would be way too much of a clusterfuck to me. The VNs are not in their respective order. Meaning number 1 is not the best, and so on. 1_CHAOS; HEAD 2_Cross Channel 3_G-Senjou no Maou 4_Fate/Stay Night 5_Forest This Visual Novel is the easiest visual novel translated to get a bad ending without using a walkthrough- which just adds to the fun of it. It makes a massive amount of references to common literature, which makes it even better. 6_Katahane It may seem like an ordinary moege- the atmosphere is light, the story is full of cuteness, which you can note by the character design and soundtrack. It gets really good in the middle, and you'll be dying to know what happens in the end. A game with multiple perspectives, it's definitely one of the most enjoyable Visual Novels I've ever read. 7 Majikoi 8_Little Busters! 9_Tsukihime "You shouldn't tell lies that you can't even fool yourself with" 10_Swan Song A post apocalyptic Visual Novel. 11_Symphonic Rain It may seem like your ordinary moege. Trust me, it's not. 12_Sharin no Kuni, Himawari no Shoujo (and sequel) 13_Sekien no Inganock Steampunk. An atmosphere full of mysteries and references that will make your head blow up. 14_Steins; Gate A visual novel that deals extensively with time travel and it's consequences. 15_Utawarerumono 16_Fault: Milestone (1 & 2) 17_Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni 18_Kara no Shoujo 19_Umineko no Naku Koro ni 20_Planetarian 21_Ever 17 Another top 10. 22_Remember11 It lacks in the ending, but otherwise the story of this VN has enough to easily become one of my all-time favorites. 23_Zanmataisei Demonbane 24_Rewrite "Could it possibly be rewritten, this fate of hers?" Another one that enters the top 10. 25_Narcissu 26_Grisaia no Kajitsu 27_Saya no Uta Only if you enjoy dark and messed up settings. 28_Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni 29_Eien no Aselia 30_Rose Guns Days (1 & 2) There are small sections of gameplay on this one, but you can skip them by pressing the space bar, so this still qualifies. 31_Sengoku Rance I feel obliged to comment on this VN before suggesting it to anyone. It's an Alicesoft title, which speaks a lot for itself... If you don't know how it's going to be like, well.. Kind of tough to describe. Lots of sex, including comedy rape. Alicesoft tends to make the whole story a comedy until right near the end, where things actually do get serious. It's worth checking out, if you don't mind Rance's personality. 32_Phenomeno Want a short VN that can captivate you for their whole duration? Here is it. Visual novel adapted from the youth horror novel written by Hajime Ninomae and illustrated by yoshitoshi ABe. 33_Ef- A Fairy Tale of the Two 34_Dysfunctional Systems Another one great for those who want short Visual Novels. 35_Daibanchou Another Alicesoft title. While Rouga is not near Rance's level when it comes to pissing off people, alicesoft's style is something which often doesn't please people. 36_Yume Miru Kusuri The endings pack quite a punch. 37_Kikokugai- The Cyber Slayer 38_Eden 39_Hoshizora no Memoria 40_Katawa Shoujo Yep, it's somewhat overrated. Still, the fact that it is substantially easier for those who are starting to play visual novels to read should not be discarded, and overall, the story was good. 41_World End Economica 42_YU-NO 43_Shikkoku no Sharnoth Yep, there is a minigame on this one. If you download a save data you can skip the minigame, though. So it still qualifies. Another VN that enters my top 10. 44_Muv Luv Alternative The first Muv Luv didn't have enough to enter this list. You should still read it, though~ MLA is definitely awesome. 45_Dangan Ronpa 46_Comyu - Kuroi Ryuu to Yasashii Oukoku 47_Hanachirasu 48_Ayakashibito 49_I/O 50_Deardrops

    Majikoi A-1

Since this specific title will be in the talks for quite a while, I thought that I'd do a 'review' on it. Majikoi A-1 is the first of five Majikoi fandisks, released early 2013. It includes routes for Azumi, Benkei and a brand-new character, Yukie's little sister, Sayaka. There really isn't that much to talk about anything else except for the different routes. The music and art are mostly taken straight from S, with including more sprites for the heroines of each fandisk. There's also a new ending songs, with each heroine having a remix of the track. The specs are the same as in S, and the engine is the same all-around. I didn't expect anything new aside from the enhanced amount of sprites for the central heroines, as this is a fandisk. The quality of CGs seems to be better than in S to me, but that might be my imagination completely. There's also some pixelisation when character sprites zoom in, but that's minor and didn't really bother me. From the looks of it, A seems to take the middle ground between the original and S, occasionally having more H-scenes than in your average fandisk and streaking them together, which isn't really good, but the routes are much better and focus on character interactions and development, as it should be in Majikoi. I honestly wouldn't want to repeat the borderline nukige that was Majikoi S, that had 48 H-scenes, so it's going in a new, more generalized direction. Let's start with the routes, shall we? I'll start with the route I played first, being Sayaka. Sayaka's route is the complete package for a standard feel-good route, and Sayaka's fun personality further enhances that. Sayaka's personality is, well, Mayuzumi. What I mean by that is she feels like Yukie's sister, being a closet pervert and all, but she also feels like her own character and not a cheap cop-out. She also reminds of Yamato in some aspects. In some aspects she's the polar-opposite of Yukie and she's genuinely worried about her sister never having that much friends and talking to a horse-ornament. She's just what a mature little sister should be, and I very much like that. The basic premise of the route being that Sayaka came to Kawakami City in the summer vacation for two things: checking up on Yukie and getting her father to stop attempts at getting her married by finding either a stable relationship or by fake-dating someone. As he spends time with the Kazama family and after she drops the bombshell of having to find a 'boyfriend', Yamato helps her by becoming her fake-boyfriend. The premise is, well, cliched. This trope is almost never done well and as it usually blooms into true love, it just feels like an excuse for getting character A and B closer. That happens here too, but in a lesser scale. The interactions before this lay a nice groundwork beforehand. When the eventual 'actual' relationship starts, it's nice and the 'problem' in the route doesn't feel like a problem, but still manages to bring tension in the route and Taisei is a great father-character. It's a shame that the route's rather short, or else it would've been much, much better. It had all it needed for a route-type I adore but fell flat because of the length. Moving on to Benkei. Benkei is amazing. The route's good, but Benkei is the star. Benkei's a fan-favorite from S, and we finally got what we wanted. As I adore Benkei, I might be a tad bit biased. Anyways, Benkei and her route could be summed up with two word: laid back. The route as a whole is much more laid back than majority of other routes in the franchise as a whole. There's no urgency, there's no huge 'problem', there's just a lot of romantic mush and of course, Benkei. The story of the route is that Yamato became a 'member' of this Lazy Club, which basically is just Benkei, Yamato and Usami-sensei lazing around, eating snacks and occasionally playing shogi. That's it. Looking how the route progresses, we seew a new character, Musahi Bunta, a relative to Kosugi, or Premium Girl. He's nothing special and basically just acts as an obstacle to shorten the distance between Benkei and Yamato. Benkei also shows some signs of jealousy and this could be seen as out-of-character, but she's still a girl, so not really. The confession is sort of indirect and incospicuous, but considering Benkei's personality, that's for the best. The dating part is nice, nothing special except for super-moe Benkei. The route also shows a good grasp of Benkei's true strength, which was a little hidden in S. The ending shows how Benkei grows from being dependant of Yoshitune to becoming more mature, which is the best ending for Benkei's route I could've asked for. Finally, Azumi. From what I've heard, most think this as the definitive best route of A-1. Me, well, it's okay but definitely the worst of the three. Azumi's antics never really change, but shows more how Kukis' corporation really works, as well as giving Azumi's backstory more light, which I can appreciate. The route starts off from when Yamato became Mon-sama's personal aide and helped them get closer. In other words, it continues from the 'Future with the Kuki Maids'. Yamato helps Azumi try and get closer to Hideo while he's still in love with Kazuko. Aided by Stacy and Lee, Yamato thinks of different ways of making Hideo fall for Azumi, but falls for Azumi himself. After Azumi fails to make Hideo fall in love with her, Yamato confesses to Azumi, gets rejected, and intiates a circle of confessions for years to come. There is almost zero romantic development until the very end. The route also has three time-skips, which I can't really say is a good thing, as it breaks the flow somewhat, but the flow is rather chopped-up onwards from the first timeskip, so this really doesn't become a problem, sadly. Honestly, the route was really good all the way to the second time-skip and then it became a chopped mess. But on the other hand, we see Yamato finally becoming a competent fighter and rising in the ranks of Kuki servants. We also see a new character that Azumi has talked in some occasions, the chief of Fuuma village. He's basically a perverted old man and comical relief and nothing more, but that's fine. After when they do get together, there's no icha icha, just sex scenes, followed by more sex scenes. In my opinion, this route's charm is half about the Azumi/Yamato interactions and the other half about the side-characters, which are enjoyable and the time skips allow you to see some characters when they grow up and even Yamato getting subordinates. But even so, this route was pretty much a disappointment in my eyes. If it had continued from the way it left off at the Fuuma village, it might've the change of being much better, but continuous confessions, no romantic developments, chopped-up segments and no actual icha icha after the realtionship is established doesn't equal a good route. The only merit this route has is the side-cast and the novelty of being different. My final score for the first installment is 7.4, or 7 if you want even numbers. Overall, A-1 is a solid start to this series of fandisks that gets dragged down by the slight quirks in the engine that remained unfixed and Azumi's route. If they smooth the rough corners the game now has, it could be one of the better fandisks around.

  15. I wonder. I don't think Yotsuba fits KyoAni's regular brand of SoL that well (Nichijou being an exception, but quite different from Yotsuba too I think). Well, you lose the skills of a pro, adult seiyuu but on the other hand it'd be more genuine. Ghibli always has kids doing the kids roles in their films, and it works. I think it worked fairly well too for Naru in Barakamon (although it sounded odd at the beginning), and she's a rather similar kind of character. There's also Tsumugi in Amaama this season. Overall it tends to sound off to an anime fan because we're so used to pro seiyuu, but on the other hand for a child that young it's a reasonable choice.

  17. Mh, i'm gonna do something i never do, review a game in two parts. And by that, i mean danganronpa, i'm gonna judge the game for it's 2 aspects : the VN form and the game form. so, here is the VN review of Danganronpa : happy trigger havoc. so, the story is your typical survival game/battleroyale/shit hits the fan everyone knows(Battle royale, Higashi no eden, Mirai nikki, heck even american shit movies do the same thing now), where a bunch of ultimate something (there's a lack of ultimate fappist though), 15 survivors who have to try to escape a deadly situation and avoid killing each other. It's a kinetic novel, meaning there's no branching path, so i'm gonna review the entire story at once. The artstyle is amazing, delicious, extremely beautiful, some of the characters are fine piece of art...that's about the character sprites, the actual CGs are...ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh, psp-crap level, few are good, the rest of them are at soo low resolution, i don't understand the whole point of it. The story is surprisingly good, as a survival game, it was entertaining, the interactions between each characters were cool..but the characters are uneven, some of them are really cool and interesting, others are...well, boring and useless, but still, the progression of the story, the mysteries of hope's peak academy and everything give you a motive to pursue your objective, it's a good story, nothing too fancy, but nothing bad either. The writing is kinda easy to read, i actually appreciate the localization efforts, it's not the best texts ever, but it's not bad, i completely not regret the lack of naegi-kun or thing-chan, not at all. so, my final verdict, if i consider Danganronpa as a VN, is...7.5/10, it's short, some characters are shit-tier, others are amazing, it's definitely a good ride.

  22. That does seem to be the logical conclusion, for now anyway. I believe that was the exact same justification that Kindred Spirits used to get a 100% uncensored release. However, decisions in this area tend to be ... inconsistent. Two data points does not a general policy make. Taken literally, "sex without vaginas is okay" might appear to imply that a version of (say) Imopara that cut out all the sex scenes where you can see the lady parts, would be approved. I am, uh, highly skeptical any such thing would be approved. In other words, it might be okay for characters in your game to enjoy a slice of pizza now and then in a story about something else. But that doesn't mean that pizza delivery simulators are okay now, as long as they don't show the sausage holders. (Granted, Imopara maybe not the best choice; maybe a third of the game would be left. That's not my point

  25. So far as I'm aware, and I'd like to think I'm pretty well aware, the Steam version is the same as MangaGamer's. Why, then, was it not censored? So far as I know, and I'd like to think I know pretty well, no inferior genitals are actually displayed at any point, and those are the problematic ones. Therefore, this release pushes every boundary; not that there was that much of a shock wave or coverage over it.

  32. It's hard to call learning japanese as an adult "hobby". The learning curve is step and requires a lot of effort within the first couple of months (provided, you're learning it and making progress); something, most adults aren't capable to pull off due to massive time constraints, work and little spare time on hand. On the other hand, once you pass those first couple of months and learn the basics (kana, basic kanji, vocabulary), it becomes less tedious and more feasible. Would I recommend learning japanese just to be able to read vn's? No. Would I recommend learning japanese, if you're either a huge japanophile or a fan of japanese popculture? Yes. If you're interested to make another step and move on from translated works to read manga, vn's, play games and watch anime in their native language, you should consider learning japanese. It's because most of the stuff we get translated is usually shit and we often miss on things, that are really worth it. That's when knowing japanese comes in handy.
