Greetings to Everybody! So, I've been stalking these forums mostly in silence since last summer, but for some reason, I never took the time and effort to properly introduce myself, which was probably quite impolite of me. My apologies for that. In a nutshell, I'm a 25-year-old freeter, mainly struggling with my bachelor's thesis in economics, while I'm interested in so many other things, I'm having a difficult time figuring out what to do after acquiring a degree. My story with visual novels started in 2014, when I tried Katawa Shoujo and instantly got hooked. Apart from the fact that it affected me much more than I had previously anticipated, it also re-sparked my interest towards anime and manga, which I lost during primary school due to different extracurricular activities, new hobbies and other IRL matters. Since then I'm on a huge, continuous journey, trying to discover at least a small fraction of this fascinating world, including what I've missed out on for about the last 15 years. I came across Fuwanovel after reading about the retranslation project of If My Heart Had Wings somewhere, and besides dropping by regularly to check its progress, I often found myself reading through other various contents of the site and its friendly community. I've been thinking about getting involved a bit more actively for several months now, but my overall shyness and poor expressive abilities discouraged me from doing so. I hope to change and be more sociable in the future. I think that concludes my possibly roundabout and most definitely overdue introduction. Thank you for reading it and for having me of course! Also, if you'd like to know anything else about me, feel free to ask!4 points

What's the general opinion on English made/OEL VN's?
SaintOfVoid and 2 others reacted to XReaper for a topic
pretty sure bloody chronicles will feature english voice acting, and no, its contracted actors are by far no crappy schmucks devoid of talent. so yeah, every title that starts going for the opposite when still calling itself a supporter of the community is one too many, as already mentioned in the last paragraph of mine. same goes for exchanging english writers for asian ones. there is and wont be any substantial growth of the western genre when developers/studios who think they´ve made it decide on giving a piss. period.3 points -

What's the general opinion on English made/OEL VN's?
Raithfyre and 2 others reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
Not particularly. People don’t defend ‘bad’ OELVNs. However, people who come from a Japanese eroge background will tend to put a heavy emphasis on a) sex and b) art, and therefore dismiss OELVNs out of hand. People from a Japanese storytelling background will put emphasis on c) play time. This causes problems because these are not areas the industry outside Japan excel in. OELVNs tend to take the medium in a different direction than Japanese VNs. Japanese VNs are heavy on story and light on agency in games. OELVNs place a higher emphasis on agency, utilising to a fuller extent the ‘choice’ mechanic that the Japanese developers tend to use as a gimmick, but sacrifices overall length. Because of this, many people from the Japanese world will deride OELVNs for being crap because they don’t follow the priorities of the Japanese industry. Hypocritically though they then mock them when they’re TOO much like the Japanese industry. People into VNs for the ‘eroge’ will never like the direction OELVNs are going in. People into VNs for lengthy stories won’t appreciate that (currently) there isn’t the budget to make such things, or if there is more budget is spent on adding branches and consequences rather than length (like a book.) VNs are one of the unique mediums that can take advantage of non-linear storytelling. Interactive storytelling. Player choice and consequence. OELVNs are heading in a direction where all of these things are explored, Japanese VNs tend to be books with pictures. In the Japanese industry, hardly any of the advantages of the medium are currently being explored, and most VNs can easily be written as books. On the whole it's a stagnant industry. I find the Japanese industry comparatively boring. That is, they don't tell as good a story as a novel, but they want to pretend they are. Maybe one day they'll awaken to the potential of the medium they're writing in and I'll be interested, but at the moment I don't get anything from a Japanese VN that I don't get from a novel. I can go into more detail, but suffice to say that the OELVN industry is one with incredible potential, is growing rapidly, but is often derided by people unwilling to give it a chance. That is why they’re defended so vigorously. PS: I'd apologise for using the dreadful term 'OELVN' so much but alas, there's no suitable other atm.3 points -

Reading Ginharu Very Slowly #4
Deep Blue and one other reacted to Flutterz for a blog entry
Been busy this week, didn't get to read as much, took a bunch of screenshots though! Bethly came to school the next day, all healthy and less depressed. The one-room classroom had its first meeting, and it basically consisted of Yukito, the 5 grills and Momo-chan-sensei as the teacher. Since the topic was "My favourite thing" and Yukito was first, he gave a speech about how the local mountaintop was his favourite thing, and everyone liked it so much they decided they wanted to go there. Bethly also talked about her favourite thing, which is Alberta, and her mom. After the one-room classroom, everyone went home together, and discussed the two speeches. It was decided that they'd go up to the mountain top on the weekend. Naturally Yukito and Yuzuki arrived at the rendezvous point first, and they soon saw what looked like Hina being accosted by two large gentlemen, and figured they must be womanizers, so Yukito had to go save her. Turns out they were just tourists trying to get directions. Eventually everyone but Bethly arrives, and since she's nowhere to be seen we end up taking the cable car without her. A short while after we reach the top, we hear a familiar sneeze somewhere nearby. Once the group is all back together, everyone decides to have a snowball fight, as middle-schoolers do. Well, that's all for now, and now it's time for more reading!2 points -

Ignoring the posts and drama in the thread - my personal stance is that any success that has been garnered, is fooling newer members/consumers of the genre. if low-budget indie-dev-working-from-their-house type short-stories are your thing, then I guess it's a success sure. EDIT: i should clarify: "where" the dev works their magic doesn't matter so much, but it's about how professionally they are approaching the matter, and how high they are willing to reach. Until something really wows me, and shows the true potential of the "new" scene, I'll stay a member of the old guard.2 points -

General consensus is that Persona 4 has the edge on Persona 3 in terms of characters, but that Persona 3 has the edge on Persona 4 in terms of plot. They're both great. Never played the others aside from a few hours with the original Persona long ago, which I really couldn't get into , but I understand the tone and style really changed starting with Persona 3. I recommend the Portable version of P3 since you can get it on the Vita, since the battles are way more enjoyable since the system is nearly identical to P4's, and since what you sacrifice in graphics and bonus scenario isn't all that great anyway. Basically, once you're done and raving about how good P4 was, you should play P3. Also, P3 has Aigis. You're gonna love Aigis.2 points -

Crest/Banner of the stars, probably the show with the best characters i have ever watched. And by far my personal favourite. Even if the overall story is simple the character and world building are so good you don't even notice it. Patlabor, it like your under arrest but with robots. Gundam unicorn Birdy the mighty decode, not sure if this one qualifies though. Break blade Full metal panic Kiddy grade, it is not the best series but it is quite entertaining. Stratos 4, also has its fair amount of problems but its entertaining Solty rei, it has its problems but personally i always had fun watching it. Desert punk, again not sure if this qualifies but its the best damm comedy i have ever had the displeasure of watching. Why these, well i just dont like having anime in my reccomendations list that get recommended every single time, like cowboy bebob and outlaw star, trigun.2 points -

What's the general opinion on English made/OEL VN's?
SaintOfVoid reacted to XReaper for a topic
the main point is that the japanese voice acting, if there ever will be a full one, was not aimed at from the beginning, but them having decided on giving western va´s a chance, see the additional jp-voices as pleasant surprise or whatsnot. point is western works should primarily feature their native voiceovers, even moreso in case of them always claiming to make the genre great and blah. this is not related to ones possibly being superior over others, or not, it´s about integrity. & yes, the others you´ve linked to are more than enough, simply because they´re looked up to by smaller developers, being rolemodels or such, and are negatively impacting the western genre as a whole when exchanging native staff (artists, writers, voice actors etc) for asian ones. to me this appears to be a destructive move, mostly aimed at an additional pandering towards japanophils/weaboos/your-average-retard-believing-everything-japan-is-superior-by-default edit. i refuse to keep on arguing any further with seemingly blind & highly fanatical propaganda-bots at this point.1 point -
EDIT: Ninjaed by Funya. This does too, though it just makes the game even more cringy. https://vndb.org/v17008 (Half the time the JP voice is saying something different from the actual English line...) I agree with Decay and the others that English amature voice actors are usually quite bad, but I strongly disagree with the idea that putting Japanese voices into an otherwise fully English game is a logical move. If the game is going to have an actual Japanese translation, then it does make more sense, but if not, I see absolutely no reason to do so.1 point

Arguably Rumiko Takahashi was already doing harems in the 80s (Ranma 1/2 for example). And there's always the (fairly probable) possibility that some obscure manga author did it before. What's the general opinion on English made/OEL VN's?
Nandemonai reacted to Decay for a topic
Thing about english voice actors, is that the amateur voiceover scene in Japan is extremely robust and full people looking for their break into the massive professional seiyuu market. The amateur voiceover scene is much smaller in America, largely due to the professional scene being smaller. Our professionals are very talented, but our amateurs are... amateurish, to put it kindly. Their career expectations in the field are lower, and so their equipment is worse, their training is worse, there's a far smaller selection to find talent in, etc. For as much as I've disagree with Yorikbad on most subjects here, I'm with him in regards to voice acting. The amateur VO scene here is just too underdeveloped to expect even decent results from. And no matter how indie you are, you shouldn't actively seek to hire non-essential substandard talent to your team. With stuff like art and music? Sometimes you have to go with what you can get. Actively bringing down the quality of your game with mediocre voice performances? That's just a waste of money.1 point -

VR Kanojo is on Steam Greenlight?!
Infernoplex reacted to sanahtlig for a topic
The English official site is instructive. This will be an adult-only release. It looks like only the demo is being released on Steam. http://vrkanojo.com/index_en.php#2 The English is poor--they can't seem to construct actual sentences expressing a coherent thought--but it's not machine-translated at least. The VR-only platform requirement is going to extremely limit their audience for this particular title. Only extreme early adopters would be willing to pay the $600 or so for the headsets, much less the extra $300 or more for the necessary GPU/hardware upgrade. And only a very small subset of those would even be interested in a hentai game, much less one of Illusion's simple sex sims. I doubt this title will do well in either Japan or overseas, at least while VR adoption is low. In a Venn diagram, the overlap between eroge fans and early VR adopters is probably minimal; eroge fans tend to have less capable hardware than your typical gamer since the majority of eroge have very low system requirements. This is basically a demographic paradox: their primary audience won't have the hardware to play their game, and the few who DO have the hardware are unlikely to be interested. That Illusion has finally taken an interest in the English market is great news. However, this is a terrible product to test market demand for their games. It's almost doomed to fail due to a low install base coupled with a niche product. That said, the YouTube trailer is a smash hit. Too bad they won't be able to translate that marketing triumph into sales.1 point -

Mechs: Gundam 00 08th MS Team Gundam Wing Code Geass (both seasons and Akito) Soukou no Strain (interesting, if short, something of a tear-jerker) The Vision of Escaflowne (haha, since you included mechs I could pick this one, lol) Space Opera Legend of the Galactic Heroes (godly) Tytania Space Action Cowboy Bebop (classic) Kiddy Grade (frequently underestimated, awesome story) Edit: ...twenty-four years as an otaku and I have somewhat eclectic tastes for sci-fi. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have included Cowboy Bebop, save that I watched it in my formative years and it had some influence on how I viewed sci-fi later on. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is the single best sci-fi anime out there, in terms of story and action. Tytania is like LOGTH's bastard little sister that barely manages to get up to knee-level, but it is still better than the crappy excuses for sci-fi released since. Kiddy Grade is a classic example of how the package doesn't define the contents... especially when you get to the second half of it and insanity starts to rise. Gundam 00 is the most solid and modern-feeling of the Gundam series, with the best action and story I've seen in a Gundam series. Gundam Wing is a bit more idealized and somewhat less realistic. 08th MS Team is the most realistic Gundam series, in terms of combat. Soukou no Strain is really fast-paced and emotional... not to mention filled with death. If I have to tell you about Code Geass, then you need to watch it.1 point -

My opinion is closely aligned to Funyarinpa in his earlier message. I don't know if anyone else has spoken from the opinion of an OELVN dev yet, so i'll act as if i am the first. Naturally, i fall into the category of those who had their VN virginity brutally torn by Katawa Shoujo, but even then, after reading subsequent Japanese novels like G-senjou no maou, i never actually compared the two. Why? Because they were both great. This may sound like i'm trying to defend OELVNs but it's the undisputed truth. It doesn't matter how, why, what or who made a VN. A good story is a good story no matter what it's 'ripping off'. Some who've read this far might still disagree with my notion. Then let me explain a little further basing my opinion on facts and ideas. There are two popular VN forums sites for western otakus. There's our very own Fuwanovel and there's Lemmasoft. Fuwanovel strikes me as a Vn site that is mostly focused on Pure Japanese Vns as opposed to lemmasoft which tries to promote OELVNs. this is true because this forum has a sub-forum for OELVNs that sees even less action that most virgin NEETs. Neither of the sites are better than the other and neither of them are worse. But after browsing these two for a while, I've come to learn quite a few things about the differences between OELVNs and Jappy VNs. 1. Literature. OELVNs use a different style of literature as opposed to Jap Vns. To be precise, they are more focused on prose and the utilization of text heavy lines and powerfully fluid description. So it's almost like reading a paperback novel on screen with art. I myself dislike writing with prose, as i prefer utilizing Japanese literature and plot devices. An example would be the very well known Boke and tsukkomi routine (think Comyu). Most OELVNs are focused on delivering the story with excellent wording at the cost of visuals. 2. Art. Art is the main branching point and the OELVN's greatest weakness. i'll be blunt. Sometimes i see some projects on Lemmasoft and be awe-struck by the art used to depict characters... and not in a good way. It seems like OELVN devs are satisfied with utilizing low to medium-low quality for their projects to cut costs, as they are not companies who can shelve the heavy costs that comes with great art. Most of the freebies have low quality art, while the Commercial ones have medium low art. Like Funyarinpa stated, this community gathered because of Japanese art, music and style, so OELVNs with such art would have little to no impact on those used to the excellent qualities Jap Vns deliver. I'm an OELVN dev, yet I've never bothered to read a single OELVN except KS. (the ones I've edited and proofread don't count). This is because, before i am a writer, i am an Otaku. that means i love Japanese stuff. that means i want Japanese stuff. But attempting to produce something on the level of the Japanese is apparently being termed as a 'ripoff'. It makes you wonder what exactly the consumers want. Do they want westernized art? No. Do they want Japanese art? Yes, but not from you. A difficult situation indeed. 3. Communication. Another bane of OELVN creation. From what I've read/heard most Japanese devs are mostly located in a single room/complex/building during most of the VN's creation. Most OELVN devs do most of their communication over the internet. Something like this doesn't sound like a pressing problem from the perspective of a non-dev, but trust me, communication is what has lead to the crumbling and breakdown of most OELVNs. For example, an artist is working on a CG. Now CGs unlike sprites or Character designs, have to be done right from the get-go otherwise you're going to lose a lot of time in correcting it. So they send WIPs and Lineart sketches. You'd have to pray and hope your description and their understanding matched well, otherwise you'd have to restart. Jap devs, however, just need to look over their shoulder and check out their comrade's WIP, or the artist may even explain a better idea for positioning and perspective as opposed to the writers description. Also some associates on the EVN sphere can remain offline for days or weeks and there's absolutely nothing you can do but wait patiently for their return. The internet is difficult like that. 4. Commitment. Apart from one or two exceptions, most associates in the EVN creation are not fully committed to what they're doing, especially in the case of Artists. It seen by the style of advertising on lemmasoft. "Pay half to my paypal, i'll send a sketch and you pay the other half". After that payment is done the association has ended. Whatever the art is used for is not their problem, since it has been compensated by a few bucks. I'm not saying artists should work for free, but rather take a controlling share in what they draw for. Unfortunately for EVN devs 95% of artists aren't interest in Sales commitment or as it's called, "Rev-share". Yes, i know that economical and financial security play a part etc but that doesn't change the fact that it's still a problem. Another point under this, is that EVN artists hardly actually read the story their drawing for. I mean they just read the summary and draw based on whatever you give them alone, instead of mixing it with the emotions, perceptions and ideas you derived from reading. It still works for business purposes, but it would never match up to Jap Vns with their enthusiastic and moving work. Aside from these points, there are many other deep rooted and subtle difference that bar EVNs from making it big. I can't touch on everything since i don't have the energy for that, but i would spent a little more on talking about my 100% personal opinion. What the OP refers to as 'ripoffs' are those EVNs that utilize Japanese names for characters, Japanese locations and Japanese culture, while using western style literature, art etc and the writers themselves only have a second hand grasp of the Culture. Like Funyarinpa said, what the EVN community needs is that one (or two) project(s) that stands out from the rest with Art, Music and story that are original and compelling while delivering it in the style that Jap VN lovers want. Hopefully, with the increase of the EVN output, that one project may come sooner rather than later. EVNs may not be the best examples of VNs, but like all things that are shot down by humanity, it's just a mentality... which i'm also criminal of. Being someone who understands this very intimately, i hope that whatever i throw out would be to the satisfaction of both sides of the market and wouldn't fall into the demeaning category of 'ripoff'.1 point

What's the general opinion on English made/OEL VN's?
Dreamysyu reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
It isn't hairsplitting, actually. Nothing exists in a vacuum, everything exists relative to something else. I do 80 km/hr in my car RELATIVE to the ground. I'm happy RELATIVE to my default condition. This ice cream is tasty RELATIVE to my normal food (and especially when compared to this side of brussel sprouts.) The ball was passed forward relative to the passer, not travelled forward relative to the ground. When someone describes something as 'meaningless' they usually mean 'meaningless RELATIVE to my ideas of worth and what I perceive to be entertaining and important'. Unless of course they mean 'meaningless' relative to the games goals, but usually they'll explicitly say this in this scenario. Because the idea of a meaningless activity is relative to the person, it's useless as a general definition of a concept. Each person will have a different definition of the genre. So just some background material first. Diablo involves grinding for loot, which tends to be a bit different than grinding for levels. There's not much point grinding for levels in Diablo, when you started the original game people sought to get to nightmare as quickly as possible. You reach the level to unlock nightmare before you finish the game. I don't see much purpose grinding for levels TBH. Grinding for loot means the consumer is consistently rewarded for his activity, or anticipates the prospect of being rewarded for his activities. This is why so many people get addicted, it's a reward mechanism. Grinding for levels features no such reward mechanism. It's why it's an inferior mechanic when talking about consumer entertainment. It's inferior because there's nothing to make those activities enjoyable (except possibly a detailed combat system.) So what is grinding? Grinding for levels is gathering experience points for no other purpose than to gather experience points. When grinding for loot, the sole purpose behind those activities is searching for loot. In Etrian Odyssey the player's purpose is usually to reach the end of a dungeon, it's not grinding. In most Western RPGs there's a purpose other than gathering levels, which makes it not grinding. This isn't splitting hairs, it's getting to what grinding is and why grinding for levels is looked down on. What about those games where there's set monsters on the map and they don't regenerate? I answered the second question just above. What makes Fata Morgana an ... English style VN? Dear Western VNs, feel free to use as much English voice acting as you like. Go long, go hard :31 point -
