[Translation Request] Could a team pick up "Limit Panic!"?
Infernoplex and 3 others reacted to ittaku for a topic
Why? There's always a flood of newbies joining the forum and they'd have no idea that their request is unreasonable. I've pushed for there to be a sticky for newcomers entitled "Make your translation requests here" that instead leads to a post explaining how unbelievably unreasonable it is to expect someone would translate something just because a request is being made, outlining just what's involved in translating a whole game/VN. Alas either the admins/mods don't think this is important enough to go to the effort of making - or - they get a kick out of humiliating poor unwitting new forum members (maybe a combination of both?)4 points -

Don't you have something better to do with your time? It's not Star Wars and you are not Lucas. Just leave the series as it is and enjoy it for what it is. Not trying to defend the game but you're going way too far with this. Uchikoshi did what he could with what he had available. It's not perfect but he tried his best. At least we got a conclusion to the trilogy. It could have been done better but why bother with it now, if you love the games, cool. If you hate the game that's cool too. Move on with your life and find something better to do.3 points -

Generally, Americans do not trust their government, especially in the Southern US. They would rather see the states run the show on a local level, than a large federal government. So anything that gives the government more power, and say in their lives, they don't like. A fear of many people against universal healthcare, is the government telling them what they can and cant have treated, where they can and can't go, and eventually, what some have labeled, "death panels" where the terminally ill, mentally ill, or elderly are denied healthcare to save costs. You can laugh at that fear all you want, but, at least here in the southern US, we are taught to not trust the federal government, to work more on the state level. This argument, strong federal gov't vs. strong state gov't goes all the way back to 1783 when the government was being set up with the Articles of Confederation, and again in 1789 with the Constitution. The irony in all of this, is the fact that many of these people want the government to dictate lifestyles and keep the LGBT community chained down.3 points -

To be honest, I've been waiting for this so long, but there's a number of questions MG still failed to answer. My biggest concern is with the art - 960x544 isn't really a lot, even by older standards. I have no idea, what route they went in, since I didn't had a chance to see the game yet, but 960x544 art assets do not look that good on 720p, not to mention 1080p and higher resolutions. Not everyone likes to play their games windowed, either. It's even more questionable MG doesn't provide a DEMO, nor a gameplay preview of sorts; we're literally in the dark & back to early 2000's, where playing the game fullscreen resulted in gloriously pixel-artsy graphics no one complained about, because those were the early 2000's. They are not anymore, though. TL&DR Such low resolution butchers the game's art, which is tremendously good. I've seen a lot of people complaining about the lack of h-content. From what I know, it's been removed for a reason, mostly because Vita does not allow 18+ content. The doujin version had two h-scenes or so, they actually progress the story and bear significance towards character development, but it's not like the all-ages remake removes it completely; supposedly it's implied, not shown and a lot of the dialogue has been made into the story in one way or another. In other words, it was rewritten to fit the all-ages version, but carry the original meaning. Will they release an 18+ patch? Doubtful, hence the Vita remake didn't took it into account, the game's missing the required assets, which would have to be specially made for the PC version. In the future? Maybe, but definitely not anytime soon. To be honest, we're not really missing much and the remake is far superior in regards to the original. It has gorgeous art and voice acting, story was rewritten and there's a lot of new content in. What else could you ask for? As much as I'm against game censorship, this isn't really a case and I can't understand people, who plan to deliberately drop it and cease their support just because of the very small portion of removed h-content. edit: Regarding the art, I saw an ingame screenshot from the english release, played natively on a 1080p screen. Can't share, since it's NDA, but it doesn't look half-bad. A bit blurry, as far as it goes for 960x544 assets rescaled to match 1080p, might propably look better on smaller screens running native 720p. Preety basic rescaling. I guess it's fine, considering they propably couldn't obtain high-res assets eitherway. At least, I can live with that.2 points -

There's also that sense in the South and other places that they really dislike being looked down upon by those in other areas, also known as elitism. Maybe it's real, imagined or unintentional, but those that have higher educations from the North and West Coast are seen as elitist and trying to tell how everyone else should be "because they're right and we're wrong." It was a big problem Al Gore had in 2000, whether it was there or not, and it's something that's prevalent today. Basically, the perception of a know-it-all asshole telling you what to do can really hurt a candidate. Clinton has always struggled to really resonate with that sort of voter - let's face it it, it's hard to argue about "white privilege" when you're a walking example of it. (Yes, Trump is also a walking example, but it's not an unspoken part of his platform.) Whether Hillary did something criminal or not, the view is that her being rich and powerful let her get away with things others can't. Her daughter they tout about? Private school educated, hedge fund manager, hasn't done a real day of work in her entire life. That's great for her, but it's textbook elitism. Yes, Trump's kids are the same. But because Trump didn't come off as elitist (and his kids are much less well known, aside from Ivanka) and Clinton did, his kids didn't really hurt him, but I really don't think Chelsea helped Hillary at all and may have hurt. A lot of the gun control boils down to the fact that we have a mess of gun laws that aren't enforced very well anyway, and adding more really doesn't help. We really need some sort of clean up on gun control. The one snag is that there's a group that doesn't want to ban assault-style weapons. The other main issue, really, is we need better mental health care attention in America. The mass shootings you see pop up every so often are usually (not always) the result of some white kid not right in the head seeking revenge or attention or both. Which brings up another point that sounds laughable but is actually a large factor. In the race to be inclusive, the straight white male is being shut out and shouted down. Equality for all is a wonderful goal that needs to be reached, but you can't do it by exclusively shouting down one group, just because they have the "misfortune" of being born like the previous ruling class. If you keep saying to them, "You voted against Obama because you're racist," or "You voted against Hillary because you're sexist," and on and on, you're only inviting them to keep doing the same. That's not to say there aren't sexist, racist votes (there are), but to counter that there's another ugly truth - there are people who only voted for Obama because he's black, for Hillary because she's female. Obviously not everyone who voted for those two are like that, but you can't get away with saying that. Tell someone they only voted for Obama because he's black and you're going to get nailed by tons of people. Tell someone they only voted for Trump because he's white or male? Crickets, or agreement. Does that sound acceptable? If it does, you're part of the reason why Trump won. The country is becoming more inclusive, but the straight white male isn't going anywhere and if you want them to see things your way, you have to be as inclusive to them as well and listen to them and what they have to say. We're a pretty darn good country, and we still will be. But we have some issues that need to be ironed out.2 points -

Dear Translation Requesters
dfbreezy and one other reacted to Aizen-Sama for a blog entry
Disclaimer: At the end of this post I get pretty salty, so be aware of that. This post endorses MY and MY OPINION ONLY. The numbers about the costs of a translation team were researched before putting them here. Hello guys. Aizen-Sama here with another spicy rant. Although I haven’t been around the forums as long as other users who have spent their time here several years (I have spent around 7 months more or less at the present time being) I have seen that there’s a huge problem that I’ve mostly seen here, in Fuwanovel, more than any other site that congregates VN fans. In fact, I think that this doesn’t happen anywhere but here, but again, what do I know? I don’t really visit Reddit nor 4chan that much, let alone interact there. Anyways, what I want to address is a problem that has been going on since the beginning stages of this site, and that problem is the Translation Requests, or what I like to call “e-beggars” (yes, I know this term has been invented already). First and foremost, the majority of people that make these Translation Request posts are usually new users and I’m fully aware of that. But this has been blowing up lately. I know that 4 posts in the last month and a half doesn’t sound like that much, but the proposals are getting so ridiculous that it’s hard to believe sometimes if the guys asking these things are for real or if they’re straight out trolling. Let’s take this post as a quick example. You’re scrolling through the forums and see this post, and then the thought comes to mind “Another typical Request Post. Sigh. Let’s see what this guy’s asking for…” and then you see this: These posts show nothing more than ignorance and arrogance, as well as no interest towards these groups they are begging to translate something for them. Do these people even understand what it takes to translate a medium length VN? A medium length, around the 35-40k line mark in my opinion, could easily take a year. And the guy in this post begged for 5 medium and long length VN’s to be translated, one of them being >50 hours long. But don’t be mistaken, the worst part about that post wasn’t the amount of VN’s he was begging for nor their length. It was the last statement: “Thanks in advance”. Although it sounds stupid, that’s what triggered me the most. A shitty “thanks in advance” is not something that motivates people to do these things. People have to put themselves in a translators’ shoes sometimes. Not only him, but also the people who aren’t translating, but the ones who edit the text, proofread it, the image editors, the quality checkers, etc… Do they think that the task can be easily done if the guy in question knows Japanese? Not even close. The secret of a translation project. I know this is hard to believe for the e-beggars, but the translation of a game requires an enormous amount of time, and one year to finish the TRANSLATION, not editing, of a medium length VN is a very decent deadline. And I’m talking about a medium length game, not a long one. Majo Koi has around 47k lines. Supposing it had one sole translator and the translator in question did 100 lines a day, the game would be finished in around 470 days approximately, this taking into account he diligently does 100 lines a day, no skipping, no nothing. Let’s convert that into hours spent in total, since that tends to shock people more; 470 days doing 100 lines a day, if the translator is an experienced one, meaning that he has done this before or is a professional in the field, he could get rid of that task in about an hour. But an amateur translator, basically the bulk of the community in itself when it comes to fan translations, could take around 1,5 or 2 hours to do the exact same number of lines. That could mean than in total, just translating could take from 470 hours for the experienced translator, which means around 20 full days translating something, to 705-940 hours for the amateur translator, which is around 30-40 days translating nonstop. And this would be just translation, I’m purposely taking out the other processes such as editing and QC’ing. Do you e-beggars understand the amount of work is being put in these projects? This is why Translation Request posts should be completely banned off this site and instantly deleted. Then again, where would I put my insulting memes towards the op’s to gain likes for no reason? Let’s throw in another question now that we’re shifting towards that matter: Is fan-translating Visual Novels even worth it in the first place? Before I answer (although it’s probably known what I’m going to say, given my tone) let me address this: I by no means think that fan-translation is bad, in fact, it has been the reason why we’re getting official localizations now and I think that no amount of praise of thanks can equate the amount of work the translators of these projects did in order for this genre to be known better in the Western community. But, as sad as it sounds, fan translating at this moment is not worth it. Why? I’ll put in some of the reasons: - Although some members of the vocal community throw in the occasional thanks once the patch is out that’s all the team who translated the game gets. Nothing more, nothing less. Some people might say that recognition counts as some sort of reward as well, but personally I don’t think that’s the case. - No reviews of the translated VN’s are usually made (this is what in my opinion spreads the awareness of these games), only discussion threads are made, which is pretty sad in my opinion. - I’m going to quote something that Clephas said in one of my posts, that sums up this next point: “Another thing is that most people in the community will never even try to experience fantl from the other side of things... they don't realize how much time it eats up, that emptiness you feel when you realize you've used dozens of hours of your personal time only to put out a patch that people bash left and right for 'errors' and other shit.” - The work put in to translate the game itself is not worth, meaning that the compensation that the translator/team worked for it is not even close enough to what they should be getting. Lastly, I want to address the problem that comes with donations, awareness of localization costs/translation costs, and ignorance. I’ll cut to the chase; for the people that think that with donations alone you can “pay” a translator to do some kind of game, you’re WRONG. Let’s put an example of what could a medium VN translation cost: let’s suppose that the team consists of three persons, to translate a 1.5 million jp character VN (equating to a 45k line count approximately). The translator gets 1 cent per Japanese character, the editor gets 1 cent per English word and the QC gets a quarter of a cent for each English word. In total, the final price equates to 33k dollars JUST FOR THE TEAM TO TRANSLATE A SINGLE VN. And these prices are apparently pretty shitty for a translator, so yeah, there you go. Besides, why donating a random group of guys, who could easily run away with the money and machine translate the game, or not even translate the game at all, when you can just support the official localizers? Contrary to what some people think they are actually releasing more games than ever and the 18+ industry in the scene has never seen so many official releases ever. Summing up this 3 page-long essay of frustration: 1. Please for the love of god don’t e-beg or Request for translations. Just no, it triggers people off and it only shows how ignorant you are about what happens behind the scenes. 2. Fan Translating in this actual moment is NOT WORTH, only people who are very commited and have a strong resolution will be able to start one, and very few out of those will actually finish the project. 3. Donations are NOT a solution to encourage Fan Translation, it ruins the very concept of it and it’s also ILLEGAL. Don’t support an already illegal activity by paying it. 4. Before posting retarded shit on the forums please look for other posts similar to what you might want to post. Maybe looking at the responses could enlighten you and help the other users not waste their time by reading the same shit over and over again. 5. Before criticizing Translations and patches for “errors” and “typos” and being a little whining bitch how about you try to show interest on how much effort people put on the translation of these games behind the scenes? (This goes solely to the people that haven't experienced working on a fan translation and whine non-stop about "how bad the translation of this is" and blah blah blah.) Anyways, I think that’s all the rage out. For those of you who haven’t dozed off already have a nice day and all of that stuff. And if you smash that like button you will get your very own… DIES IRAE MACHINE TRANSLATED PATCH. Yes! This is not a scam at all, your own personal Dies Irae Machine Translated patch. If you leave a like you can choose between a Google, Bing, or a Skype translated patch. I’ve invested so many hours on them, it was totally worth though ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).2 points -

I have to agree, and I'm pretty far on the "release the 18+ version" side of things. This is the kind of 18-plus to all-ages transition that I don't have a problem with. (The upcoming localization of Dies Irae is the same way.) It doesn't mangle the story, there isn't much being cut anyway, and it's a better version all around. The problem is I have a very hard time trusting companies that say this about their own releases, since obviously nobody is going to say that they had to undermine the writers' vision in order to make money (whether it's true or not).1 point -

I did indeed notice that. I believe I initially tried to read it, as I tend to, got bored, and skipped all the others shortly after their commencement. Finished Touko's route. Here are some impressions: Overall, a fairly enjoyable experience. Despite the original complaint, I had no real further issues, and thought the route as a whole was good. My main complaint was the choice of sprites (for Kamishiro in particular), and I'd fire the bloke responsible. Yves was sweeter, I suppose, but that lass does insist on putting her all into everything, if in a different way from Akane. And her route also had way more intolerable moments to 'compensate', I guess. Excellent route, really. Will doubtlessly move on onto Yuzu. Frankly I don't think religion should be a basis on how you make decisions. And as for the white people are racist part, when you openly support a wall it's not wonder why people think that. As for guns, I'm often wondering how much it will take for people to start thinking about why maybe stricter laws are needed. The killing of common workers, kids, and LGBTQ doesn't seem to sway anybody so nothing likely will. Honestly I never thought America was a great country. If a Government allowed slavery and even after that allowed there to be laws against a single race, I have little hope things will get better. I don't condone people calling all whites racist because that's just stupid and wrong, and I know just cause someone voted for Trump doesn't mean they are sexist or racist. Problem is though this country for many is seen as place where they can be who they want to be. However when you have a president who, for example, wants to get rid of the protection rights for the LGBTQ people and build a giant wall, it's not wonder why people are upset with us. (And note, I don't like Hilary either.) I suppose my main problem with people who vote for him is, your seemingly okay with allowing an entire group to be discriminated against and maybe even killed because of your religion. People here are ignorant to things and often only think of themselves and not others, which is depressing. But like I said, I don't find this country a very good place and until people learn to be more compassionate, I don't see things changing much.1 point -

It depends who you're talking about. There are plenty of white guys who do understand the system and how it came about. The problem lies in the idea that we're automatically racist because we were born looking the same way as the ones who created the system, and it's something that gets levied at us every time something goes the way that is seen as white guy advantage. This election is a perfect example. If you really think every last vote for Trump was the result of sexism, or racism, and there are plenty of examples out there that show people think this way, there's a problem. Not to mention, when you even bring it up as a problem, you get shouted down. Kind of counter-intuitive to a group that claims they like inclusion and wants to be the party of everyone. (Of course, politically speaking on a national scale it's all a load of bullshit, but I digress.) It also doesn't help when the narrative is incorrect. Take equal pay, for instance. The Democrats love to pull out the old "70-something cents on the dollar" line. It rallies the base, gets women angry at men. "You stupid men, you make more than us you sexist jerks." The problem is that old stat still comes from a pool of every job out there slammed together and spitting a result with nothing else in mind but men versus women. There have been studies that show when you account for factors in jobs that are the same (ie, not putting engineers in with school teachers, etc.). Pay between men and women are pretty equal under those circumstances. The factor? It comes in what jobs men and women choose to do, mainly being men go into higher-paying fields. So the solution isn't some "equal pay" legislation, it's get women interested into going into those other fields. But that doesn't make for a good bumper sticker, right? Even in the waning moments of Clinton's campaign, she was more focused on "Love Trumps Hate" then anything else. The slogan itself basically tells anyone voting for Trump that you're a "hater." That's not going to endear you to anyone but those who are "already with you."1 point

Dracu-Riot! Discussion
Nandemonai reacted to NoiRequiem for a topic
I just finished the common route but I feel like the setting is somewhat unrealistic. So apparently, vampires are being discriminated against, which is fine and all, but shouldn't only government members or something know about their existence? I didn't see too many government imposed restrictions so I wouldn't get why the vampires feel like they're being discriminated against, since the PUBLIC is unaware of their existence. How is one supposed to tell a vampire from a human, if they didn't know about vampires in the first place? If a vampire went to a real estate agent meant for humans, the realtor has to have knowledge of the vampires if the realtor was to reject the vampire asking for housing (based on their ID and mark or something). If that's the case, this means that quite a number of people would have to be in the know which leads me to the next part. You'd think that there would be a few vampires who are "rebellious" and start chaos or something and civilians would have noticed and maybe some pictures get taken and it would have gone viral on the Internet with no way for the government to stop it. Moreover, you'd expect some people in the know to leak out this information and from there, to the public. In Tokyo Ghoul (somewhat similar setting), the humans are aware and the government is trying to (rightfully) exterminate them as well. That to me, is a much more realistic setting than the one Dracu-Riot has. Keeping the majority of vampires on an island is just asking for a rebellion. Basically, this "discrimination" and the fact that there are civilians with no idea that there are vampires are very contradictory in my opinion. Why would the government hire people who would discriminate against vampires if they wanted co-existence in the first place? Otherwise, they would have just exterminated them. Or is the government actually somewhat scared of vampires and don't want to wage war against them? In that case, the discrimination shouldn't be happening anyway. Sorry if my thoughts aren't organized well; I was just somewhat exasperated at this poor storytelling. Maybe there's a huge backstory about all this and vampires and humans have gone to war before but a peace treaty was signed or something and a worldwide memory wipe occurred thanks to one vampire's power or something. Then maybe all this would make sense. tl;dr - If there were actually vampires in reality, there's probably zero chance that the setting in this story happens.1 point -

And see, this is where I think people should stop fighting with each other and unite under a better cause. It doesn't help at all that white people are fighting with minorities and homosexuals, and vice versa. What Americans need to realize is that everybody has it rough because of the oligarchs stealing our government and creating an economy that only works for them. Trump is far from the solution though; what we need to do is fight corruption at its core using the ballot initiate. It's just usually when I hear about white dudes complaining about their rights being violated or being "shamed" for their race it's because of something like a cakeshop being forced to serve a gay couple, or African american students being bussed into a white school, or because the movie 12 Years a Slave exists.1 point -

I've got a few more for ya. White Album 2 - The ending is kinda frustrating for some, but the characters in this series are phenomenal. Acchi Kocchi - I personally find the romance in this series adorable, although it's not much of a focal point. It's a comedy for the most part. Kokoro Connect - I didn't get the pairing I wanted in this, but most other viewers seem to think the main pairing is preferable anyways. If you agree with the main pairing also, you'll likely cherish the romance (they're very popular among romance enthusiasts). The drama in the first arc is fantastic, although it kinda dips after that. It does pick up again in Michi Random.1 point -

being made available on steam or not doesnt really matter much to me, since almost every title of theirs ended up falling flat, btw started to bore me out whilst reading through, mostly due to its fairly underwhelmingly written characters/semi-mediocre drama aka pulltop syndrom.1 point -

Favorite BGM/soundtrack of a Visual Novel
Gibberish reacted to Infernoplex for a topic
An interesting thread This is one of the aspects of the VNs that I consider very important and I tend to remember VNs that have very good soundtracks. For example, one of the reasons I think I liked Bible Black very much was due to its OST that managed to make me excited enough for what's about to happen next, that music itself made me interested into the plot more, maybe even more than the H-scenes itself, it felt so good to listen to the music and see all that was about to happen badly for the protagonist It's definitively one of the VNs in which I encountered good use of the music to support the setting ... I didn't read that many VNs as of yet but from all those that I have read so far, I will pick one title that I consider to have had the best soundtrack of all of them and that is definitively Notch - The Innocent LunA ... Too bad the VN itself had a kind of a bad translation from Chinese into English and it fell so flat on its face with the badly designed story (I will be honest, it had a good potential) which is very sad because the soundtrack was definitively something else! I have grabbed the music files from the game before uninstalling it and to this day I am still listening to it because it's simply one of the best soundtracks in a VN that I have heard so far. More than half of the soundtrack files I considered very good and I love to listen to it outside of the VN. I can't link any of it here because it seems nobody uploaded it on Youtube so far but I will link the OP from the game:1 point -
For the last two years or so, I've gotten repeated requests to unequivocally name my top VNs made up until the present, ignoring objectivity, my vndb votes, etc. I've more or less just ignored most of those requests, because it is a pain in the ass to name a 'favorite' VN in the first place. I've made lists of VNs I loved from various genres, and I've also made lists of VNs for a specific purpose. However, I've avoided making a list like this one up until now, mostly because my 'favorites' switch out so often. Let's get this straight for those who are going to criticize my choices... these are the VNs I like the most, not the fifty best VNs of all time. I make no pretense to preeminence of opinion in this case, because I'm also discarding all attempts at objectivity. What a person likes is ultimately a matter of personal tastes, not a matter of logic. Why did I make it fifty? Because my number of VNs played, setting aside replays and nukige, is over six hundred already (with replays and nukige, it is closer to eight hundred...)... I'd be surprised if I didn't have this many VNs I considered wonderful. Keep in mind that these aren't in a particular order. 1. Evolimit 2. Dies Irae (the one by Light) 3. Ikusa Megami Zero 4. Nanairo Reincarnation 5. Semiramis no Tenbin 6. Bradyon Veda 7. Vermilion Bind of Blood 8. Hapymaher 9. Tiny Dungeon (as a series) 10. Bullet Butlers 11. Chrono Belt 12. Ayakashibito 13. Notice: I edited most of this walkthrough because of several errors and inconcistencies. I completed the game 100% with the full translation and checked with a Japanese walkthrough to make sure I didn't miss any choice. Routes I added If Route: Brother and Sister If route: Abominable Kirino If Route: Rock Endings I added Manami True Ending 2nd Saori Ending 2nd Kuroneko Ending 2nd and 3rd Kirino Ending 2nd Manami ending Lastly I edited most of the guides to reflect all the new branches, mainly in the Kuroneko and Kirino routes but all the others were also revised and checked to see if they were working properly (Kanako and Yuri routes weren't working properly at first) Hope you enjoy!1 point
