Dec 2016 Goals
Chronopolis and 11 others reacted to Tay for a topic
(Posted on the front site.) Hey everybody, hope you’re safe and doing well (and doing well in Final Exams, if that applies to you). This post is to brief you on the various initiatives I and other Fuwa team members hope to accomplish by the end of the year. Original VN Tracker Last month Batman announced that we were looking into tracking original visual novels (VNs) in an analogous fashion to VNTS and translated VNs. While I don’t want to spoil the specifics, I can confirm both my project prototype and database were completed and approved by the rest of the team. In essence, that means this project is about ready to roll, so please look forward to its launch later this month. Note to VN Devs: In the coming days/weeks we will be rolling out the listing standards and directed contact information. It’s difficult for me to track all of the devs which have contacted me on this issue, so please stay tuned for more information published to this site. I will not have policy or standards ready for you before that time. Year-End Surveys I’ve consulted with the math geeks who help me out each December, and I’m told the statistical models are ready. All that remains is for me to finish writing the surveys and pass them by volunteer editors for comment and feedback. I can’t promise an ETA, but I do plan on running the surveys for approximately one week (as is the usual for our year-end surveys). Games Database (Front Site) The games database will now focus on releases (original VNs; Licensed TLs; Fan-Translated Patches). My goal is to add entries near or at the same time as sitting down to complete VNTS posts. By December’s end, my goal is to have all 2016 releases added to the site. Lastly, while I do not have any progress to report regarding a true-database implementation, I can confirm that I am still actively working on this issue. For your edification, here is a nearly-complete listing of VN translation projects which were released in 2016. I believe we are missing only a handful. [ See post on front site for this table ] True Org Email with Unified Lists Clearly the sexiest update on the post: the email system for administrators and project leaders is going to be overhauled, and certain team members will receive complete org software (limited by cost). Year-End Public Report Once the surveys are completed, I will be posting a year-end report of the state of the site. I plan on breaking down traffic patterns, survey results, site finances, and planned action items.12 points -

The thread "Post pics you like" lives off the posts made by a single user, Jun Inoue. If not for Jun, the thread would hardly have any posts, and Fuwa would be a cold and sad place without proper memes to fuel its users' daily requirement. Jun's ability to find funny pictures and gifs to share with Fuwanovel is treasured and loved by all, and the site has not seen a user with such an amazing post-like ratio since Fiddle. I made several attempts at getting an interview with Jun, to ask him why he is so motivated to bring Fuwanovel memes and hilarious gifs, but every time I checked his profile to see if he was free, I was met with the same situation time and time again. And, by scrolling down on his profile, you will see just how dedicated he is to his mission of never letting Fuwanovel go a single day without memes! Taking all of this into account, I think it would be unfair for the thread to keep its current name, and instead suggest we rename this thread to: "Pics Jun Inoue likes." I have made a poll on this thread, and ask that you all vote, so that we can make this change happen!4 points

Dec 2016 Goals
Darklord Rooke and 3 others reacted to Decay for a topic
Some of the main goals include an interface that's more convenient for people who are interested in playing VNs in English. It will only contain translated VNs, and will present information on how to read them in english as clearly as possible, as well as additional information like technical Q&As and walkthroughs. If the plans for an actual proper database system crystallizes, one of Tay's plans was to integrate translation status and tracking, similar to Tinfoil's abandoned translation tracker.4 points -

Attending my dad's funeral this afternoon
Akimoto Masato and one other reacted to InvertMouse for a topic
Hi there everyone. A few of you may have heard that my dad has passed away this Monday from cardiac arrest. Never before have I felt so broken. It's like there's a hole in my heart that would never heal again. But after close to a week, I felt the healing process taking place. I can now smile again, and I no longer break into tears at random. When I reflect, my dad's passing has helped me grow so much in the span of three to five days. It's not at all worth the exchange, but now I hold Mum's hand a lot more, and the whole family is closer from the incident. My mind seems to have pushed all of Dad's flaws aside, so now he's turned into some kind of deity who I can always count on to watch over me. I've never been spiritual, but maybe it's all I have now to keep me sane. But as the title suggests, my dad's funeral is on this afternoon, and I'm so nervous about it. I haven't seen Dad's face since I left the hospital on Monday, and after the cremation ceremony tomorrow, I'll never get to see him again. Really scared to guess how I'll respond when I see him today. My wounds have at last begun to heal, but the funeral might tear those stitches open again, which is so tough to bear. I feel terrible for worrying about myself at a time like this, but I must own up to what's going through my mind. For now, I'm telling myself that the funeral should be a celebration of my dad's legacy, but once those doors open, my narrative will probably fly out the window. So yes, if anyone has any advice for me, I'd appreciate that so much. I'm up typing this at 3am because I really can't sleep, so maybe I'm a bit desperate. Of course, I'd be thankful for any good wishes you have for my dad as well. Just a lot of selfishness and confusion on my part. Thank you so much everyone.2 points -
What are you playing?
Funyarinpa and one other reacted to Eclipsed for a topic
Nah, you don't necessarily NEED the bad ends before second route(?), it's just that due to the way the flags are set for this VN once you go into the second route you'll have to literally replay the first route from scratch or something to reset the flags to get those ends, which you noticed are pointless and not worth your time anyways. Thematically, the abundance of ends and whatnot will tie in to the R11's lackluster ending. A small thematic thing, nothing big. But it helped me appreciate that shat ending better.2 points -

Sorry for the late post. I hardly even lurk here anymore. But InvertMouse, I've known you since I first started posting on this site. So to hear such bad news from you really does make me sad. It seems that you are successfully healing from this loss, and that is good to hear. The sadness this has caused you only means that your Dad was a good father and a person worth missing. Growing up with loving parents is a blessing. And unfortunately, their deaths have to come eventually. I haven't experience a loss of a parent, so I can't share any perspectives for you. All I can do is give you my belated condolences.2 points

... I'm going to be blunt about this... I can't believe this was written by the same guy who wrote Nekopara, Sakura Bitmap, and Strawberry Nauts. This VN has an overwhelming degree of impact compared to his other works, to the point where I'm even willing to consider it a kamige. Music, music-usage, story, presentation, art, and art usage are all at their highest levels, combining to create a nakige whose impact is far out of proportion to its length (which is only about seven hours, for me). I honestly wasn't expecting the emotional impact of this VN. In terms of this quality, it approaches Houkago no Futekikakusha, without being an utsuge... I literally cried throughout the entire game, to the point where my sinuses are swollen and my eyes bloodshot. From the very beginning, this game makes no pretense at being anything other than what it is... a cathartic trip full of love, despair, sorrow, and loss with a drop of hope. I won't spoil you as to the central concept, even though it is tempting. Based on the fact that no details of the setting other than the characters are revealed in any detail on either the official website or the Getchu page, in addition to my own experience, I can say straight out that this is a VN best enjoyed without someone giving you details to the setting or situation. I will say that it is a fantasy setting, based in a world that has early nineteenth-century tech (no guns that I saw though), based on the presence of an ice box and ice sellers in the game. This is also based on the fact that matches exist but electric lights apparently don't, since the characters are using candles and oil lamps. This game is pretty short, mostly due to its structure, where heroine 'paths' only come into existence after the main story is over, as epilogues for each of the four individual heroines (Haru, Yuki, Kotose, and Ren). There is no 'true' heroine in this game, for those are wondering. All the heroines are quite literally equal, though the protagonist is a bit more intimate with Ren and Haru, which is probably more of a reflection of the writer's preferences than anything else. This game is 100% 'business', including the slice-of-life scenes. Not one scene in this VN is wasted on something other than portraying the characters' suffering and joy or progressing the story. To be blunt, if this game weren't so perfectly designed, I'd probably be calling it 'bare-bones' in that aspect. That lack of wasted time is actually of immense help, as it prevents the phenomenon of 'contempt due to familiarity' that tends to occur when a VN has an excess of 'meaningless' slice-of-life scenes. This VN isn't humor-centric, so don't expect a lot of laughs out of it. The heroines have serious issues, and even in everyday life, those issues peek out from beneath the surface on a regular basis. As a result, humorous situations are relatively limited after the setting's central issue gets introduced to you and you come to understand the protagonist's objective. Unfortunately, there is little more I can say about this VN without ruining it for you. I can say it is a first-class nakige, and I can say it is a cry-fest designed to suck the tears out of you with a virtual vacuum cleaner. However, that is just a repeat of what I said above. I do advise that anyone who goes into this VN should do so without excessive prior knowledge, as it is a VN that is best enjoyed with a 'clean slate' the first time around. On a more serious note, social media has basically become a method for people to self-isolate from opposing opinions, which is one of the primary reasons I hate it in a more general sense... while I'm not fond of social and peer pressure, I did like it when I didn't have to worry about racist politicians obtaining political power on the federal level...1 point

saying that the quality of the translation is good... I don't even... they "Americanized" every single name in the game, changed the order of the names, changed surnames with first names with no patter.., rip off honorifics, ruined and added retarded american speech slang to many characters, replaced the senpai honorific with plain names and then at some point started using it again explaining the meaning of senpai in 1 sentence... so why didnt they used it from the beginning? xD Oh yeah I know, if they use senspai the readers would get lost, who is senpai? you can only see kurisu and maho in the scene, there is on one named senpai there, I'm lost! please Americanize everything for me, please! They should have also added some dank memes randomly to some scenes just to not to confuse some readers and make them uncomfortable with the weird japanese terms : (, ahh is that an american flag waving in the background? oh and uncle sam? Now i can understand the plot , yokatta I mean thank you God almighty! There are some bad translated parts (which points out of a translation not being QC or TLC), for example at one point changing the meanings of どうして to why from how or vise-versa when the characters meant something else, changing the meanings of 寂しい and 寒い not using the word 萌え for some reason because people that read vns dont know what the hell moe is, right? again bring me something american im getting triggered here with all this weeb BS : ( and I can go on and on.... The translation problems if you don't understand what they are saying is not that bad since you will still get the plot but adding that stupid american slang here and there... that's just bad taste and when they actually change some words (that are in the dictionary of the game) to the "equivalent" of the English ones and then some others they dont... it just doesnt make any sense AT ALL. At least they kept the childish way that Mayuri uses, but overall they lied or at some point changed how they were translating everything (I remember reading a blog and one of the translator explaining that they were going to leave the honorifics and many other things untouched and stay as true as they could to the jap ver and the previous translation which was way better than this one, so this lead me to believe again that at some point someone changed everything and in the process they ruined some parts of the translation too, that or they didnt QC/TLC) But then again, how can I complain when I'm being lazy not reading it in japanese and im also using a "free translation" OH yeah I forgot using the word "Lintahlo" (リンターロ) because let's be racist, it's fun! Even though the professor speaks English he doesn't say it with a fucking L like mocking a Chinese speaker, in fact you can clearly hear him saying "rintarou" in a really poorly and badly acted American accent but that's another issue not related to the translation... (and he is a japanese VA so even if he wanted to pronounce it with an L that's something really difficult for him) what was I saying? Oh yeah:1 point

I used to hold this view because that's what happens when you get involved with niche forums in your early adolescence, but I totally disagree now. I don't post much on Facebook, but it is a great tool to keep in contact with friends. I still regularly interact with my good friends from high school through a group chat in Facebook. I also can keep in contact with friends I made abroad (Japan) for when I comeback. It really is a useful tool that keeps friends connected despite physical separation. So yeah, I use Facebook. But I hardly post on it. I mostly just use it for pms and group chats.1 point -

Fuwanovel Confessions
akaritan reacted to Mr Poltroon for a topic
Why, quite so. I do indeed jest. Do permit me a simple elaboration. When one goes on to learn an art, there's an early period where said person fancies himself a masterful connoisseur of the art in question. Be it language or gardening, the period shortly after learning enough that any one would consider you "slightly above average" is the most guilty of this issue. At such a point many would think to display their excellence, or, to be more accurate, their perceived excellence. I was one such example, for example. By purposefully choosing to opt for the more atypical words, I was demonstrating my 'vast' knowledge of vocabulary and sentence structure... by building the most awkward and incomprehensible sentences around. And therefore, I gained the reputation of being more formal than is customary, a title I shall proudly wear forevermore. I was, however, recently defenestrated from my throne. Indeed, the joy I once saw in such matters is no more, and these days I've come to prefer making simple puns with the language. Occasionally elaborating something more elaborate. This, too, is normal. The better one person becomes at a craft, the better they can identify the flaws they, or someone else, commit. It is consequential that they then be humbled and grow less prone to flaunting. Why this elaboration then? I intended to build this up to eventually say that, as of recently, I have indeed come to perceive your... more developed posts as a peerless impersonation of my former style. Excellent. As I once said, "more of me can only be a good thing".1 point -

I do have a wishlist that goes on for pages and pages, but there is a few special games in there that I showed some serious interest in, but never actually played yet: Miagete Goran, Yozora no Hoshi o. I bought the special edition of this game last year, on release, because of my love for their previous games like Kono oozora and the fandisk but still haven't played it. At the time I wasn't sure if my JP was good enough to read such a long title in JP, and since then I just haven't gotten around to it. I really do want to play this soon though, as it's just sitting on my shelf atm. (The special edition box looks awesome though, so I do like just looking at it too ) Hatsuyuki Sakura Another VN I have, but still haven't actually started yet. Heard many great things about it, (including spoilers x_X), but I can't handle playing too many nakige/ utsuge in a row, so I have to start this when my feels can handle it. I also had the same issue with this that I had with Miagete Goran, as it's a pretty long game, and I wasn't sure if I could get through it all in the past. Nowadays it's just a combination of me being busy IRL and a little lazyness that stops me from reading these. Sakura no Uta I have had people recommend me this left and right, so it's been building up in my mind as something I have to read in my mind. Also read a couple of reviews that seemed to praise it quite a lot, so I have been meaning to read this, but still haven't gotten around to it yet. Soon though! I would add in ChusinGura here, but that's a game I'm actually reading now, and it's great. When I started university and began studying Japanese history on the side of my Japanese language studies, I decided that I would read ChuSinGura once I felt I knew enough about the time period. I did stall it for a little while, but now I'm actually reading it in the source language, and it's great.1 point

Attending my dad's funeral this afternoon
Zalor reacted to InvertMouse for a topic
Thank you so much everyone. I am back from the cremation ceremony, and as I mentioned last night, I really feel at peace. Maybe I'll curl into a ball later and cry at night, but for now, I'm ready to move forward. A lot of you lost loved ones when you were still kids. I can't imagine how I'd be able to deal with that. For me, I had my dad until I'm past 30, so I'd already call that good fortune. I'm independent, my dad's taught me a lot, and his death has taught me even more. Easily one of the most important person in my life. I don't care about celebrities. Guys like Dad are the ones I love and care about. My dad wanted a Buddhist style funeral, so we granted him that wish. Hearing so many people chant for him helped me settle my emotions. I still know nothing about spirits, but if the Buddha exists (or whichever God the individual has faith in), then the ceremony exists to say hey, please take this man's spirit back to your side, and whatever happens after that is up to the Gods. When I think of it like that, it's like the Gods have lent me this spirit for 70+ years, and now it's time for him to return to a better place. Maybe wishful thinking, but I can let it all go when I think this way. Perhaps some day I'll end up wherever he is now as well. I guess this is just part of the journey in our circle of life, assuming such a thing is real. The funeral staff handed us all tissues when it's time for us to say goodbye for the last time, but I didn't end up needing them. There were wet eyes but no tears falling. I feel so determined, so peaceful. My dad knows what dreams I have in life, and now I want him to watch me as I chase after them. Thank you for all of your thoughts! Happy to hear more .1 point -

"Look upon endings as new beginnings." --The Tao of Shinsei. You are now facing the greatest challenge in anybody's life, the loss of a loved one. There's just no room for consolation -you need to get on your feet yourself and rationalise your experience. Unless things go horribly awry, you'll move on. And possibly, be strengthened by it, as you suggest. Just know that this world is full of possibilities. Give yourself some time to rebuild. People die, nations are destroyed all the time, tsunamis and catastrophes happen, but we stubborn humans get up again. Every time. Don't forget that people die so that others may live.1 point -

But if you really need some advice I would just suggest to give the prayer to your dad there in order to help his soul in the after life. That's all I could say for now, and hope you could get over that eventually.1 point -

I'd definitely be interested in it, the more translated VN's the merrier. Although I do agree with the general consensus in getting more medium-longer VN's rather than the short ones we've been getting like Nekopara and Corona Blossom. I can't comment on CB, as I haven't played it yet, but as much as I did enjoy the Nekopara games, they're too short! Would definitely love more VN's with Princess Evangeline's length coming our way officially. But saying that, of course I won't turn away more of the shorter ones, especially if they're at least decent and worth the read.1 point
