  1. I’ve recently read a few thoughtful discussion threads on the state of the VN market here in the West. Some taking a negative stance, some with a more positive outlook. I thought I’d try to put some numbers on these statements and look at VN ownership on Steam, still the predominant market for PC games, and use that to analyse whether VNs are on their true route or have stumbled into a bad end. Data collection I checked just over a million steam profiles to try and get a random sample of gamers. With Steam’s new private-by-default profile settings, only 8% of those users had public game lists, but that still gave us 80k user profiles to work with. I could then compare my sample with the “leaked” owner data and scale up my numbers accordingly to represent Steam as a whole. Steam is rather haphazard with what gets tagged as a Visual Novel (RPGMaker games like A Bird Story are tagged as VNs), so I’ll only be including games that also have a VNDB entry. Steam VN releases So let’s start simple, with a simple plot of how many VNs are being released each month. At first glance things seem rosy for VN fans, there have never been more VNs being released in the West. But let’s break down those results a bit: Note that these trends are cumulative but NOT stacked. The EVN, JVN, and other VNs trends include only non-free VNs. Here we can start to see the reason for the differing perspectives on the state of the VN market depending upon whether you read more JVNs or EVNs. While the rate of EVNs releases has steadily increased, the number of new JVNs has remained fairly static since 2016, despite Steam’s lowered release requirements. Steady release rates aren’t definitely bad news, but in general profitable industries want to expand, so the lack of expansion tells you something about the industry. But as someone with a plan-to-read list that grows longer by the day, I’m not complaining if the rate doesn’t increase. One under-reported development in the VN market is the recent rapid growth of Chinese VNs (listed as other here), who have quietly been doing well in their home markets, but are rarely translated. So while more VNs might be good for us fans, how does the market look for developers? Let’s have a look at VN sales. Note that these trends are cumulative but NOT stacked. All sales are back-dated to the release date of the VN on Steam. Free VNs count sales as the number of users who have logged some playtime in it. Unfortunately Steam’s API doesn’t list when someone bought a game, so we’ve got to group sales by the release date of the VN. That means there will be a bias towards older releases which have been out longer and so had more time to build up sales. Here we can see some justification for the doom and gloom perspectives, with more recent VN releases selling significantly less than older ones. With new JVNs in 2017 selling only half what they did in 2016. The EVN downward trend is especially stark given that the number of new releases has been increasing, so that’s less revenue split among even more VNs. Not all VNs are equal, some are priced higher, so let’s look at total revenue rather than total sales. Note that this assumes every user pays full price, so this is more the maximum possible revenue than actual revenue. Here we can see the difference between EVN and JVN markets. While JVNs sell only half as many as EVNs, they earn almost as much revenue due to their higher price. We again see the same dip in more recent revenue though, 2017 was only 46% of 2016′s revenue, and 2018 looks even worse so far. Remember, this fall in revenue coincidences with an increase in the total number of releases, so to fully comprehend the drop on revenue, let’s look at the average sales per VN. First, we should note that this massively overestimates the average revenue generated as it assumes every user pays full price. I know devs who would sell their soul for 282k per VN. Oh wait, they already did when they signed up for Steam... (just kidding, I do like Steam, but it has issues). The important aspect here isn’t the y-axis total which is unreliable, but the consistent downwards trend. But it might not be as bleak as it seems, older VNs are more likely to have been in bundles and in Steam sales, so their revenue is likely overestimated compared with more recent releases. So I’d be hesitant to claim that revenue is necessarily dropping, but I think we can confidently claim that revenue isn’t increasing. VN Reviews Nostalgia for a past golden age is common everywhere, not least among VN fans. It’s not uncommon to hear that newly released VNs aren’t as good as older ones, but can we get any empirical data on this point? We can get close by looking at the Steam reviews of VNs over time. Each dot represents the average thumbs up/down ratio for any VNs released that month. Within the JVN market, we can see some truth to the nostalgia viewpoint. Older releases were more consistently rated higher. But that isn’t to say there aren’t new highly rated JVNs. They still maintain enviously high scores overall. As for EVNs, while they had consistently scored lower than JVNs, they’re catching up and are now pretty comparable in review ratings of JVNs. Just for fun, let’s see how the total review count compares between VNs. The two free-VN spikes are for Emily is Away and DDLC. As I’m sure anyone familiar with the VN community can tell you, JVN fans are vocal, and it shows in the total reviews VNs get. Despite there being only half as many JVNs as EVNs, they still attract more reviews than EVNs do. This is perhaps because JVNs are typically far longer than EVNs, so might be worth the time of writing a review. What free-VN fans lack in the wallet, they make up for in their word-count. Although this is massively skewed by two free VNs which compromise 70% of all free-VN reviews: Emily is Away and DDLC. They seem anomalies rather than trends. As shown by the graph when we exclude those two: *Excluding Emily is Away and DDLC. Despite the drop in position, free-VNs still out-perform what we’d expect given their lower count of total owners, but that may be because EVN and JVN totals include users who own the VN but have never read it. Whereas the free-VN total only includes those who have logged playtime in that VN, so there’s a larger pool of possible reviewers. Potential Issues There are a few sources of uncertainty in the dataset. The selection of users who have set their profiles to public might not be representative of the wider Steam userbase. It probably undercounts more casual fans who are less likely to configure their Steam profile. We also don’t know when someone purchased a VN, so it’s possible VN sales are increasing, but a lot of that money is going to older releases, especially if they’re in bundles and Steam sales. In inclusion of VNs in game bundles may be distorting the image of the VN fandom, as it’ll include those who have little interest in the medium and only own a VN by happenstance. We should also remember that “Steam” is not synonymous with the VN market. There are plenty of competitors in the VN scene, namely Mangagamer and itch.io, who tend to cater to different tastes than Steam does. So we’re only getting a partial picture of the Western VN scene. Conclusion There’s data here to support both the optimistic and pessimistic commentary. On the positive side, there have never been more VNs being released as there are now. EVNs are improving with higher average ratings and a few have reached mainstream attention. On the pessimistic side, it seems like there are ever more VNs competing for a fanbase that isn’t significantly growing. While I’d be wary of claiming profits are falling, it seems highly likely they aren’t increasing, and a stagnant market is not a healthy one. Personally, I think the future is bright. While VNs might not be destined to become blockbuster successes, there is enough of sustainable fanbase to support lots of indie developers, who are the most prone to innovate and write interesting new stories. As a VN fan, I’m excited to see what comes next~ --- I hope you found the article interesting. I had wanted to include a section analysing the Steam users, how many VNs do JVN fans purchase compared to EVN fans etc. But I want to spend a little longer going into more depth on it, so I’ll have a post up next week on that. If you’re interested in more until then, check out my other tumblr analysis posts, look out for updates on my twitter, or give me a yell on Discord (Sunleaf_Willow /(^ n ^=)\#1616). Special thanks to /u/8cccc9 for collaborating on the analysis, and Part-time Storier for proof-reading. I just do these analyses for fun, but if you want to support my work with a tip, I accept small donations at ko-fi.

  2. You're being way too optimistic. Steam may have added a checkbox on the consumer side, but that doesn't mean anything until they actually publish a policy so developers and publishers can know what's allowed and what's not allowed (they haven't done this), and actually start applying said policy (they also aren't doing this). This isn't done until we start seeing the games we expect there getting published back to the platform. Maidens of St. Michael will probably be a good bellwether, since you can bet MG wants to get it back on there ASAP and is just waiting on Steam. If you see it on Steam, maybe there's some progress. If not, then everybody's almost certainly still stuck in this same crappy situation we've been in for the past half a year or so. Regardless, you certainly shouldn't get your hopes up for KonoSora or other Pulltop releases. I doubt they have any interest, on their own side, of releasing the full versions of their games, and even if they do, god only knows what quality we'll get with their translation agency roulette game. Lastly... this is all kind of irrelevant to the OP's topic! At least, it is unless you think having the uncensored versions available on Steam will make a big difference in sales or revenue, which I honestly kind of doubt.

    What are you playing?

Slutty maid is bae. Have fun with Grisaia Ok, so I finished Akane's route (Rewrite spoilers ahead) and even though it's already 3 am here I really need to comment on it or else I'll explode. This route really is fodder for thought. This is gonna be long, let me warn you. Welp, this route was very different from the rest, but I liked it a lot. Now it's time for Moon and Terra to wrap up Rewrite

  4. KICKSTART A LOWLY SQUIRE'S LOVE LIFE! Love Esquire's Kickstarter is live now! The game still has a long way to go, but with your help, we can bring this game to life! Support us on Kickstarter and help us realize our dreams for the game! DOWNLOAD: WINDOWS • MAC • LINUX *Please take note that this is an alpha demo; everything is still a work-in-progress and may change in the final game. If you encounter any problems or bugs, please let us know ASAP! Don't forget to answer the survey found at the end for a special wallpaper! Love Esquire is a romantic-comedy visual novel/dating simulator, with a nostalgic touch of old-school RPG combat. In this game, you're not a famous knight, but a good-for-nothing squire who's on a quest to find man's greatest pleasure. Getting the girl won't be easy though, since most of them are waaay out of your league! To make things worse: you have a few months left before this huge war happens, and the only thing you know is how to milk cows. Good luck cramming years worth of training into four months! If it's any consolation, you get a medal if you die. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ No one believes that a lowly squire can save the world while banging – err, bagging – the girl of his dreams... but with a shitton of dumb luck, well... you might just prove them wrong! Welcome to the world of Love Esquire, and may the fertility god have mercy on your virginity. Nameable Hero – Whose name will these girls cry out during those scenes? You decide! 5 Dateable Waifus – More than just pretty faces, the ladies of Love Esquire have their own unique personalities, story arcs, and backstories! Turn-based combat with a twist – As a squire, you have a number of “unconventional” ways to assist your needy knight. Properly time your actions to unleash the full potential of your skills which are simply... out of this world! Manage your day – Allocate what little time you have in this world by forcing yourself to socialize or doing your job as a squire barely living on minimum wage. Git gud by raising stats – Stats will have an impact on your skills during combat, and they also affect your relationship with the girls. In other words, shape up to be the ideal man for the best results! Forge Relationships – Get to know your waifu on a personal level by being around her and talking about stuff. Sure, she’ll think you’re a creep at first, but persistence is key! As she eventually warms up to you, find out how there’s more to her than meets the eye. Multiple Endings – What’s waiting for your squire at the end of the journey? Make decisions that will end up great or turn out to be otherwise. Partially Voiced – So you can hear your waifus partially express their partially undying love for you! Mature Content – This game contains subjects and themes your parents warned you about as a kid. Moddable Content – The game will support simple modding on release. To be discussed in a future update. Original Soundtrack – We want you to experience the feels while playing this game, and our soundtrack will see to that! Having lived most of his life as a farm boy, you take control of the inexperienced and carefree Squire. Watch him grow to become the ideal man and overcome the various challenges he's yet to face. His fate (and virginity) rests in your hands. Depending on how smooth the development goes, we're looking at a late-2018 to mid-2019 release for Love Esquire. It will be distributed on Steam and Itch.io (Windows/Mac/Linux), followed by a mobile release (Android/iOS) a few months after. We don't have any plans for a console release, but that's something we might possibly consider once the game is out. The Letter was a successful Kickstarter project and a highly-rated game; it is our validation to everyone that we're not only capable of completing this project, but also delivering it up to standards. With your help, we're hoping Love Esquire to become our best game yet! What do you think of the game's concept? Do you like it? Hate it? What do you think of the characters currently presented? Do you have someone you find interesting in particular? Did you enjoy the RPG elements of the game? What were your favorite parts about it? Any other suggestions, comments, critiques?

  7. New steam update is out.. it now has Explicit sexual content option under steam preferences.. New Steam Announcement So i guess now there is no need for companies to butcher VN releases and cut out content.. Adult only sexual content is disabled by default and you will have to manually enable it.. its explicit sexual content..and not like witcher 3.. btw witcher 3 comes under "Nudity or Sexual content" and not under "Adults only" and that explains it all... basically as far as sexual content goes they will allow everything unfiltered from now on.

  8. Hello everyone (especially new users and new players)! As I announced in the community boards, we're going to try a VN player mentoring program, where experienced VN players can help newer players find, play, and enjoy games. The barrier to entry for the hobby is still pretty high -- there's no shame in that -- and we want to help you out. Let me explain how it works: Step 1. Want a mentor? Sign up! If you'd like some help finding games, or think you'd benefit from having somebody to answer some of your questions, or you just want somebody to nerd-out with about the VN you're playing, then sign up for this program. To do so, Send an email to [fuwanovel @ gmail . com] with the email's subject line being "Mentor Program" Include your internet name and how much experience with VNs you've already had Tell me if you're signed up on the Fuwanovel forums (and if so, what your username is) *Very important* Let me know how you want your mentor to contact you. The best two options are by Fuwanovel forums PMs, or by email. *Very important* tell me what you'd like from the program: help finding/playing games, wanting somebody to be around if you have any questions, or wanting somebody to "nerd-out" with you or have discussions with you about the VN(s) you're playing Step 2. A few player mentors will contact you Once I get your application I'll send you a brief reminder of the program rules (see below) so you know what to expect, and then forward your contact info to a couple of player mentors. Each of them will send you an PM or email (depending on your preferences) introducing themselves, and they'll also give you a link to a special guidebook for people in the VN Mentors Program. Step 3. After the first contact, make of the program what you will After this first email from your mentor, Fuwanovel isn't really involved anymore and you're free to make of the program whatever you'd like. Your player mentors are there to answer questions, give recommendations, and help you find your next game. We don't want to make the program too rigid -- the idea is to connect you with experienced VN players who want to help you out and who aren't going to give you grief while you're learning the landscape. The Rules Both the mentor and mentee have the right to cancel their interaction at any time, and when you sign up to be a mentor/mentee you agree to abide by this. If the other party says they don't want any more communication, you must honor that If you need another mentor/group of mentors, talk to Tay or send an email to the email address listed up above Absolutely no harassment is permitted from either party This program isn't meant to be rigid or a comprehensive, polished product. We're all here for a hobby, and the goal is to connect you to players who can help you get started.

  13. you sure love using those harsh words, eh? dunno if it´s intended or just poorly/unlucky worded, but i think the statement as a whole comes across a lot more negative then it probably should. regarding sakurasakura, it´s solpress´s 1st project, and in retrospect they simply shouldn´t have made any release estimates public. on the other hand, if they hadn´t been working on upscaling things & other technical whatnot, people also would´ve complained upon release, like you know those ever nagging hd-ultra fetishists, giving a fuck about actual plot as long as all is shiny. btw you using the term "untrustworthy" here is also no good. not wanting to whiteknight them, but like mentioned it´s one project out of god knows how many + they´d been semi-regularly putting out weekly/monthly wrap-ups & did release a small bunch of products as of now. & about frontwing milking their franchise, phantom trigger being a whole new series aside, which company really isn´t? not to mention them also releasing other titles along the lines, 3rd party and own. doesn´t really make sense to me

  16. Let's see. For your recommendations, I think I can recommend Dracu Riot here. Other than that, maybe you can try Miagete (If you didn't mind lack of sex scenes thanks to Pulltop), Da Capo trilogy, and Island (If you didn't mind some hard sci-fi). Also if you want more, you can try Sanoba later. I hope that my recommendations would be helpful to you.

  17. Subahibi was always a niche of a niche of a niche of a niche. Like don't get me wrong but with a game so famous for being unapproachable which also deals explicitly and heavily deals with many different heavy subjects, is bound to narrow down its audience. And this is a visual novel of all things, which means that it's already competing in an industry where popularity and success hinges entirely on word of mouth. This is as much the failure of the industry to generate centralized media platforms and forums for discussion of visual novels (the irony isn't lost on me), as much as it's the fault of anyone else. Comparing this to DDLC is hilarious in its own way, because that's 1. free 2. made by someone who's already somewhat known in niche, English-speaking gaming circles. I've seen no efforts to market this game. After it was pushed I don't recall it ever really being brought up for discussion on any place I follow. What I'm trying to say is, there are more reasons for Subahibi's commercial failure than "b-but the visual novel fanses only like tiddies!". There's very little actual critique of visual novels going around, and I think that's what makes it so difficult for niche VNs to survive. (And for the record, I personally bought Subahibi full price on Steam, dropped it three chapters in, and I don't really regret my purchase.)

    Random VN: Mirai Nostalgia

Mirai Nostalgia is the game that turned Purple Soft around. After Ashita no Kimi to Au Tame ni, the company produced a number of middling and poor quality games, and it looked like Purple Software was going to fade into the background, like a lot of other companies that prospered during the 'Golden Age'. Then, all of the sudden, they released this game... and they regained the hearts of their followers, leading to a series of high quality releases, including Hapymaher, Amatsutsumi, and Aoi Tori. Mirai Nostalgia follows an extensive cast of characters... a group of friends centering primarily around the protagonist Youichi and Uta (called Hime by the rest of the group). Like most high quality VNs with a lot of SOL, the interactions with the friend characters and non-heroines are lively and vitally important to fleshing out the setting and characters as a group and as individuals. The Protagonist Kudou Youichi- Youichi is a lazy young man who is utterly incompetent at all forms of housework. He lives alone (at first) with the ancient bakeneko Kuro (who has apparently been alive for over a thousand years) and is a weak esper, possessing telekinesis and an unstable teleportation ability. In obedience to his family traditions, he keeps his powers hidden from all but those few others around him that also possess powers. Youichi is, by nature, a very calm, accepting individual who instinctively puts others first, often disregarding his own well-being if faced with the needs of others. He is also generally on the lowest rung of the family ladder (even the cat is above him), and he spends a lot of his time accommodating the females in his life (Shizuku and his little sisters especially). The Heroines Kasuga Iori- Iori is a traditional black-haired beauty and a miko... with an airgun and immensely powerful telekinetic abilities (think being able to erase someone from existence with pure kinetic force). She is also constantly threatening Youichi's life, for reasons she declines to mention to him, and her temper is almost always sharp-edged. She is definitely S by nature. Despite this apparently violent nature, she also has a deep capacity for love and compassion, and she is quite capable of forgiving a lot from those she cares about (though Youichi apparently pushes her over the edge). Hatori Uta- Youichi's osananajimi, the daughter of the CEO of a large electronics company, and the spiritual center of the group of friends that lies at the center of the story. She definitely marches by her own drummer, living life as she wants to live it and ignoring inconvenient realities completely. All of the group of friends can't help but love her, and she doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She is a heavy gamer and loves nothing more than beating the shit out of Youichi in competitive gaming. Kudou Nono- The older of Youichi's twin stepsisters, a genkikko who does the vault in track and field. She loves to exercise, loves to eat, and loves her oniichan (not necessarily in that order, depending on her priorities at any given moment). She always has a smile on her face and can make friends with just about anyone. Kudou Hina- The younger of Youichi's twin stepsisters, a sharp-tongued beauty with glasses who rules the Kudou family with an iron fist. A natural dictator, she openly states that her goal is to become the next student council president and enslave the student body to her will. She adores her niisan, but she doesn't let that stop her from insulting him constantly and prodding him into doing what she wants him to do. Where Nono is the type that wears her heart on her sleeve, Hina is the type that has quiet depths beneath the surface. Anna- Anna is an esper who has traveled from the future to the past, in order to change the timeline she came from. She states that the future Youichi denied her confession of love, and she also presents herself as the most powerful esper in existence. She is generally a prankster, playful and easygoing, taking endless pleasure in teasing Youichi. However, she is quite obviously hiding a lot of things from him... She is also the true heroine. The Other Characters Hatori Ei- Uta's elder brother, a rootless wanderer who travels the world for years at a time. His generally irresponsible nature makes him the butt of jokes for most of the group of friends, and he and Shizuku are rivals for the position of 'elder caretakers' in the group. Hoshikawa Shizuku- The all-powerful student council president, Youichi's cousin, an immensely powerful clairvoyant, and the 'elder sister' of the group. Most of the group's members have resigned themselves to being her slaves, and when the whim takes her, she drags them all into her schemes and plots. She cares deeply about the other members of the group, but her position as an elder sister often puts her in the position of having to think of what is best for everyone. Sanada Kanata- The waitress at a local cafe, one of Youichi's osananajimis, and an infamous dojikko. She shines the most as the butt of jokes or when being dragged around by Shizuku or caught up in her schemes. Everybody teases her, but they all love her, too. Kase Touya- An unfortunate young man who finds himself in the same position as Kanata most of the time (the butt of jokes and getting dragged into trouble by Shizuku). While he is good-looking, because of his overly eager manner, most girls don't take him seriously, and he has yet to manage to get a girlfriend. He and Youichi often commiserate about their treatment by the girls in the group. Kuro- A thousand year old bakeneko (youkai cat) who has advised the Kudou family for generations and is one of the 'people' who raised Youichi. Once an immensely powerful youkai, time has taken its toll, and now he only retains the ability to speak mentally to those who possess esper abilities. Immensely dignified, wise, and gentle by nature, Youichi's trust in him as an advisor is absolute. While Kuro will advise if asked or if he thinks it is truly needed, he doesn't believe in 'holding the student's hand' (figuratively speaking) and is perfectly willing to sit back and let Youichi make his own mistakes. Kasuga Haru- Iori's mother, an easygoing nurse and sometime coach to the track and field team, she is an immensely strong person (mentally and spiritually). Her capacity for love is as deep and strong as her daughter's, and one can see the results in Iori's private interactions with her. She does share Iori's S side though. The story Mirai Nostalgia's story begins with the protagonist's first contact with Anna, the supposed 'girl from the future' and the return of his twin imoutos, Nono and Hina after several years apart. Soon after, he encounters Iori, and his peaceful life is suddenly overturned as a result. This is a nakige, much like the other games Purple Soft has made since, but its style is more 'traditional' (closer to the format Key pioneered, albeit with a stronger central story). My suggested play order for this game is Hina>Nono>Uta>Iori>Anna. The reasons are pretty obvious if you play the game, but I'll go ahead and outline them here. I basically put them in order from 'least relevant to the central story' to 'most relevant'. Hina's path is by far the weakest of the five, which is probably inevitable in retrospect (Hina's character is hard to grasp as a heroine). Nono is a bit stronger as a heroine, but the events leading up to the climax of the story felt forced in comparison to the events that led to her and Youichi becoming lovers. Uta's path is a bit more fantastical in some ways, mostly because of an unexpected turn of events caused by Uta's dependent personality. Iori's path... is emotionally powerful, not the least because it reveals the biggest reason why Anna returned to the past. Anna's path... is a cryfest. I cried through roughly a third of Anna's path both times I played this game, simply because it was just that good. The audio This game's music is slightly above the standard quality for commercial VNs, so it is noteworthy in that sense. However, this was also the VN where Purple Soft began to seriously typecast the company's favored voice actors (Kazane in particular), and so you can pretty much tell the personality of a Purple Soft character by the sound of their voice, in a generalized sense, lol. Visually The first time Purple Soft used Koku for their visuals was in this game, and for those who have played Hapymaher or Chrono Clock, the style will be familiar by now. Overall This game is a nice nakige with a strong mix of humorous slice of life and powerful emotional moments. If you want a good nakige to sit down and read through that is less moe-dependent than a Key VN, this is an excellent choice.

  22. http://vndb.org/v750 all as loli as can be, but only two routes are translated. http://vndb.org/v1660 loli central heroine (though honestly she sometimes doesn't feel like one) but you have to do two other routes first to unlock hers. http://vndb.org/v1474 loli central heroine but you have to do a whopping six routes before unlocking her short ending with 1 H-scene. FYI central heroine means she appears in a good amount of scenes in common route AND other heroine routes and plays some role there. Also, no ears/tails here, sorry.

    Fate/Stay Night

Fate/Stay Night The Holy Grail War. That hellish, great ritual that offers the ultimate prize for the one who claims it: a wish. There are two conditions to participate: one must be a magus (magic user), and one must be chosen by the Holy Grail to participate. There are seven chosen Masters, and seven classes of Servants. Only one master may seize the grail. This is the story of a boy who wanted to be a superhero. It's the story of three warring families. It's the story of an ultimate prize and ultimate sacrifice.
