If we want to use Japanese terms, we have a jumbled mess that encompasses things we do not consider VNs. Thus, visual novel is the best term, and the Japanese are wrong, not us. No, it's not a great name either (though I have seen musicless vns, like deiz (which was admittedly lol)). You can do a vn without sound, but take away the visuals and people will really complain most likely. tl;dr VN is the better term unless you are a weeaboo.

Bad ends with emotional impact are good, though I really would prefer them to be a bit longer sometimes (for example fal bad end in symphonic rain was decent, but a bit short). Dead ends are good when funny like in f/sn (lol tigerdojo), however they can get annoying (aoishiro). "neutral ends" like in kanon where you go for no girl are pretty boring and might be better to have something else come up (lol kenji in katawa shoujo). The best bad end I can thing of is Hanako's in Katawa Shoujo. Holy fuck.

Voted for all three of the non-other options. I recommend Symphonic Rain because I love it, then certain sets of vns depending on OP's qualifications, and I tailor all this to the post.

Hmm, let's see. I'll start with saying that my ideal vn will probably be an OELVN. The reason for this is that it doesn't have to cate to japanese tastes and thus won't have as much moral dissonance with my views. We aren't there yet, but I can dream... Time to make shitty bullet points with multiple things in them! 1. Genre: Mystery. Probably trapped, time shenanigans, loops or similar. Add a threat of death, actual deaths... and stir. Ever17, 999 are good here but both have flaws. 2. The prose should be of high quality. VNs can work without this, but damn if it doesn't pull me in more. Think G-senjou, Saya no Uta translations but even better. 3. Graphics should use an original (if only to the vnsphere), distinctive style. It should still be pretty so no higurashi graphics plx. S;g does this decently well. 4. The system should not suck. Unlimited saves, good options, can be played on a faptop, made by someone actually competent... No real examples yet, everything sucks. 5. Choices should be decently obvious, routes shouldnt require lots of skipping to get to another. Fuck the phone trigger system in s;g... There should be a medium amount of choices. 6. Underlying thematic thread, which in the end says something about the condition of humanity. Saya no Uta is decent at this, but there are problems. 7. Delicious, delicious plot. It should not be completely dark; some comedy or more relaxing scenes can happen. 8. Memorable characters. 9. A non-stupid protagonist who is pragmatic, if still somewhat good.
