What happens to the VNs that actually have some plot/character development in the H though? It's easy to just remove it all, but isn't that like willingly creating plot holes or inconsistencies? It might require some rewriting, and I doubt anyone would be willing to go throug that, except maybe if the all-ages version would go out on new platforms, e.g. consoles.

Higurashi is throwing me for a loop - I thought I would know what arc I am on right away, but tat was before I actually realised this rendition of Higurashi seems to have an actual full-fledged common route. Or does it...? The way things are going, this definitely doesn't seem like any arc I know. (vague original Higurashi spoiler?) Also making slow progress in Ayumi's route in Senshinkan; writing is as awesome as ever, even if it makes me read it really slow and with breaks. I think I'm around halfway, or more, through the route. On another note, also started RuiTomo fandisc mainly to just see the Miya route, and while I enjoy it a lot, Higurahsi kind of came in and got in the way... might have to either stall this one or just finish one route and leave the rest for later. Yes. Yes. (´・ω・`)

Haha, there's so much truth in that statement. He really has a knack for it. Funny thing is that I also only watched the anime and read the manga before (and the PC version of Onikakushi-hen, but I don't even count that since I went through the MG "translation"), so I also went into this in order to play Higurashi in its definitive form. And so far, I'm not disappointed at all, definitely recommended! I was also eyeing Eustia for quite a while now. Glad to hear the beginning is great, I'm looking forward to your impressions when you finish the VN.

Higurashi Sui is already unleashing its horrors and seems to be sneakily pushing me towards Tatarigoroshi-hen, my least favourite arc from the question arcs. And it's all because of Satoko, because I really hate Satoko. Or rather just her speech patterns and mannerisms...if I really get locked into her arc as the first one... oh Sui, much fear. Had only one creepy moment so far because I was doing my best to avoid all of the 'triggers', but even that one was scary as hell. Damn they got the creepiness to the next level with the voice acting and tight BGM/SFX control. But well, if my efforts to avoiding the tragedy leads me to Tatarigoroshi, then 10/10 trolling on Sui's side. Don't do this Sui. ;_;

If I remember correctly, those choices actually have no effect on the plot at all. The only choice that influences the ending is the one after the fight.

Catching up on more titles from the Japanese PS+, so now it's time for Toukiden and Deception IV, both on the Vita. And I'm still playing Yakuza Ishin... someone, help. D:

Make it stop - the infinite kusoge works is upon us

So it's not just the writing that's complete shit, but even their posts lack any sort of correct grammar and spelling? 10/10 representation. -

I don't know why this still keeps amazing me, but there's more?! To be honest, I like the art at least, and I might even skip through this if it had h-scenes... but in the state these VNs are now, it doesn't even seem worth doing that. But hey, at least we'll get a load of new amazing nonsense sentences... right? -
If you don't mind spending a bit more time, going straight for the fandisc is something I'd actually recommend, since those routes there act more like epilogues. If you still haven't figured out who Kaito is (or rather, where he's from) though, it might contain spoilers within its prologue. It seems silly to me to completely dismiss it just because it has so much content - after all, that is the entire point of this release, to gather everything Higurashi that has came out over the years and repackage it in a comfortable, edited and all-in-one game. Higurashi Matsuri/Kakera Asobi was already somewhat of a Director's Cut, since it had removed the original ending arc and replaced it with a new one, along with the whole choice system and overall polished structure that was carried over to Sui as well. The main story is still 8-9 arcs, the rest contains the backstory of characters that weren't explored, some new characters entirely, and interestingly enough, Umineko tie-ins exploring further the relationship between the two works and the reasons for characters appearing in both. Also, judging by the new prologue, I think it is safe to assume that Ryukishi has indeed went through it all to make sure it's a complete product, rather than just everything they could find mashed together in an hopeless attempt at a cash-grab. In short, I would say this is the definitive version, and it should be the last one too. It's not like all the extra content costs money, the VN is still the same price as any other one, and that alone already should be commendable, in my opinion. Yeah, it's a HD re-release of everything Higurashi that has came out so far + some new extra stuff, like a number of new tracks. Also the art is mostly just the PS2 one from Alchemist, but considering this also contains the arcs only present on the DS releases, quite some of the CGs are most likely either new or redrawn, possibly the new sprites too. EDIT: The entire art actually seems to be either redrawn (there are new close-up sprites and CGs) or touched-up and edited, here's a comparison screen of Kakera Asobi and Sui.

I know I already have like a million VNs started and that I need to finish them first, but... but... the money just flew out of my wallet, and...

Well, now that I'm done with C;H Noah completely, it's time to jump back into Senshinkan and drown in glorious chuuni. Be gentle, Masada-senpai.

After repeatedly fighting with my own vndb list and fiddling with the scores more than I should've, a question crossed my mind. Are VN scores detracting from their enjoyment? Have you ever felt like that the scores you gave VNs before don't apply anymore relative to the new stuff you've read? Maybe there was a VN you thought was absolutely amazing at the time, but now you read one that feels even better... what do you do with the score then? In the first place, how do the criteria even work? Is it even fair to review VNs across so many genres, all of which rely on different qualities? There also were times where I was thinking of the final score I would give a VN once I finish it, which also lead to me subconsciously looking for bad things by which I could push the score down a bit, to keep it as fair and objective as possible. Maybe I'm just crazy, but surely you've sometimes thought about rating the VN while reading too, right? So to come back to the first question, do you think that review scores can take away from your enjoyment of VNs? Do you have any examples of this happening, or do you think that the numbering system is perfectly fine?

Glad you enjoyed it! Save for the 'whose eyes are those eyes?' B ending and the true AA ending that just a bonus scene, there's not much else to see. That said, do get them - the B ending provides more details on New Gen, and there are bonus scenes in the second playthrough explaining some more things as well. Unfortunately, the PC version doesn't have the routes. I've written summaries of the character routes present in the Noah version of the VN, along with most of the CGs and such, so if you're interested in the character-specific endings, feel free to check it out. They clear up al of the details that were left untouched in the PC version, and they're all pretty great. Just don't expect any happy ends. I also totally missed all the triggers on my first playthrough, you aren't alone. :x At least Noah makes them super obvious.
-
There's 45 of them in total - that means 45 x 3 different scenes... yeah, there's a lot. Also, the only cute imouto characters are the 2D ones, obviously!
-
The message from Shogun? It was その目だれの目? = Whose eyes are those eyes? Glad you're enjoying it so far!
-
Watching Chihayafuru. Not so far yet, though I'm enjoying it... except for those lips. I don' know why, but lips in anime really bother me... which is a shame, because the artstyle is otherwise superb. :x

Now that I'm done with all the routes, it's time to get the last two endings and finish up Chaos;Head Noah completely. So far, the re-read was completely worth it. Fake me OP masterrace! 95% of the TIPS section is 2chan slang anyway, so even if you wanted to translate it, you'd have to replace it with artificial memes of our own. I'd assume that the remaining 5% that has some sort of a plot relevance is the part that's actually translated in the patch. Finished both Amane endings. So good. I definitely did not expect Amane's past to take that turn, the game even managed to use the "single survivor of a sports team vehicle crash" trope in its favor in some respects. My love for stories which depict people trying to keep their sanity and their humanity under extreme-often lethal- conditions made this part shine. It did not focus on mystery, nor on horror, but on how starvation affects people. It's kind of like how Remember11 integrates cold into its story: It's similarly masterful. Kizuko was a fascinating character that I admired a lot, and the other cast did not feel like filler. I enjoyed every part of it, though since I knew how it ends I kind of wanted it to finish as well. I really love this part, definitely worth going through Grisaia no Pantsu: The First 60% of Amane's Route. I really liked the common route, and it was very funny and hilarious at times. Makina and Sachi have some bloody hilarious exchanges. Consistently good throughout, makes me wish there was a Principal route and a JB route. It was not really going anywhere, like any SoL, but the best part was it established a routine so well that one cannot help but enjoy getting stuck in it for some lengthy hours.

Haha, I've just started Rance 1 (remake) for the same reason, although I haven't gotten that far yet.

All the optional stuff in Ishin is eating my soul. The story is amazing at all, but who cares when I have to go grow plants, cook food, search for pets, dance like a pro, master the hilarious karaoke, catch the biggest fish and get close to all the owners of my favourite restaurants?! This can't end well... this game takes optional activities to the new extreme, and I have to do them all. I think I'll die somewhere halfway through it, since that's how it always ends. @@
-
Out of all the routes, Michiru's gets retconned the hardest in Meikyuu/Rakuen. Grisaia was always weird about... I don't like to use the word 'realism', but what else to use here... genre, I guess? While the constant jumps between the serious parts and the comedy work perfectly well, the parts where the writers can't agree on whether it's a fantasy, sci-fi or a military thriller do the exact opposite. I've nevr seen such an inconsistent trilogy, what was Frontwing doing. D: I guess you can just believe what you like the best at this point, really. With so many different versions and retcons, it's almost impossible to keep track of what's the real story - or tone - even supposed to be.
-
Finished Tearaway - the Japanese localisation of it that is, since I got it from their PS+. Playing through a Japanese localization of an English game... what a strange feeling. As for the game itself, I've enjoyed it quite a bit, and I'm not even a fan of platformers. At first I wasn't exactly sure what the title meant... but from the moment you start the game they make it very clear that what they have you 'Tearaway' () is nothing else but the 4th wall itself. This is no doubt the best use of hardware I've ever seen - it was the goal of the game, and it deserves an A+ in this regard. Microphone, camera, gyroscope, front touchscreen, back touchscreen... it uses everything the Vita can do and integrates it into the gameplay and the story itself. The contents of the story I didn't really enjoy, but the end-goal, and its entire idea was somehting I definitely liked a lot. If you like weird gimmicks pushed to their fullest, check this game out. As for what I'm playing now... my copy of Yakuza Ishin just came, and... well... I'm addicted all over again. Y u do dis Yakuza.
-
As someone who has read Grisaia, I honestly found the anime quite enjoyable. Sure, it was rushed beyond belief, but you can get over that if you know the story already - what's more important is that the anime actually offers the cannon and final rendition of the prologue - Kajitsu - that was retconned to hell and back by the sequels, so there's value in that at the very least. Still, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but fans of the VN, and carefully at that... It's not a great adaptation, but it's definitely not the worst one either.

Chaos;Head Noah route summaries (C;H SPOILERS!)
Vokoca replied to Vokoca's topic in Visual Novel Talk
And here it is, the last route! This time, it's a bit different in structure, being a lot more heavy on the additional common route scenes, clearing up quite some details about the main story. Enjoy! Rimi's chapter - The Anima Statue And that's it, the last route in Chaos;Head Noah! All that's left is the 'Whose eyes are those eyes?' ending, and the 'blue sky' ending - but I assume those are the same as on the PC version. So, what did you think? I know my bad summaries only give a small taste of what these additional chapters really were, but how did you feel about them? Did you feel like they added anything? Did they help the story overall? I enjoyed them a lot myself, and this definitely is the definitive version of Chaos;Head for me. It not only clears up every small detail that was left untouched before, but it also gives us more time with the rather unusual set of heroines... and I'm a sucker for crazy heroines. A shame Noah never made it on PC... curse you 5pb.!
