Looking for dark, dreary, hopeless, mindfuck VNS. [in English]
Okarin replied to Mkilbride's topic in Recommendations
Yup, it's the least bad route. Bullying route is simply bad and class rep route I dislike very much. For me the class rep was even crazier than the cat girl. At least the cat girl had an alibi. -

There's some characters I'd punch in YMK, but not really a dark atmosphere. Bullying is a real life problem and it's very specific, there were some serious scenes in Aeka's route but I'm sure it can be done more extremely (like Euphoria for example). Aeka's route would be far better without all the porn though... -
Hi, drop by the chat sometime!

No I wouldn't. The language isn't quite a barrier -I think I could learn it if I did a proper training course, since I have some notions and it doesn't look that hard, leaving writing kanji aside. The thing is whether I'd enjoy Japanese culture first-hand, and dealing with Japanese people. Plus, it's a country brimming with stress problems, and I'd need to work, and being a foreigner, it wouldn't be that easy, there are better options (for example... English speaking countries such as Australia/New Zealand, the USA or Canada).

Steins;Gate offers one of the best examples of romance with no H, because, as everyone knows, true bonds form in the middle of distress, and there is much distress in S;G. But probably OP knows about S;G because her avatar looks like Kurisu. The romance is probably done better in Western VNs such as Sepia Tears, because they have limited budget and tend to leave H scenes out, so there's no worry about H ruining the romance, also they present situations, characters and writing more familiar to us and we have a better immersion in the romance.

I don't know about Noble Works, since I haven't finished even one route since like March (I found the game pretty meh), but taking into account most characters are adolescents (broadly speaking about eroge in general), it seems that the first scene is done "to try it" and afterwards they knock boots a lot because they become more interested in (or hooked to) sex. Which seems pretty legit. It also facilitates the sex-meter being cranked up in later scenes to appeal more to the player, of course.
-
KS doesn't focus on the H scenes, they are there because it's an eroge and because they *could* happen, they're not forced. In regular eroge you get routes of very different quality even in the same game, so it's all hit and miss. Also they tend to be done by different writers and the style and elements aren't quite the same. In general, it's hard to find a route where the courtship is done right, if only because most protags are pretty useless. Also, spending a lot of time with the heroines causes the player to become more attached to them. Presence of side characters and short games go against that. I recommend "Period" for a cute, easygoing eroge set in summer, with vanilla scenes and only like 2 drama routes, and "Deardrops" where the drama is pretty minimal and there's a better development of the relationships, I loved it.

It's good, also a snail saying "nyan" has its appeal.

Was it hard for you to move on after Katawa Shoujo?
Okarin replied to Nuka's topic in Visual Novel Talk
A nakige? I'm not sure... the masters of nakige are Key and KS differs a lot from their works. The drama in KS is somewhat heavy (depends on the route but they all have that) but it's natural distress than can arise (IRL too) from romantic relationships. One thing that it nails is that the characters really feel like adolescents. They're not mature, they do wrong things and take wrong decisions, etc. They are heavily driven by their emotions and instincts, putting reason in second place (Hisao, huh?). Also it shows the knowledge of VNs that the creators have. It passes as a low-budget Japanese novel and that's very hard to do outside Japan. Such a thing is only possible if you really understand how a VN works and is written and designed. I'm hyping it up but in truth it's just a neat VN that does its thing right, nothing more, nothing less. -

Okarin replied to Nuka's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Nope, you won't become fixated with KS characters and stories, if anything it will show you the VN world as a point of entry and you'll play more games like that. But a VN diet consisting only of regular eroge (such as Noble Works or the poor in every regard Koichoco) gets boring soon. Maybe it was Shira Oka: Second Chances, the first VN-like game I played as well. -
Well for me is better, for example, because I've got a USB/micro USB cable that can be plugged to a transformer. It came with the tablet and can be used with anything -for example, with the phone, that has its charger out of order. This way you can put it directly to current and don't have to depend on a PC or anything. But if you don't use microUSB at all, you won't feel the difference.
-
MicroUSB is the thing that newer smartphones and tablets use to recharge. In truth, I can't even fathom how it works without one. It's an universal interface now.

They are awarded for reading on. There's a lot of people that buys the games (and the VNs) and leave them to rot, not even playing them. Achievements at least encourage them to play. The SonoHana game on Steam did have achievements. And it's a short kinetic novel.

In truth, no one knows anything about the NX. Small wonder Nintendo doesn't talk about it, it's an enterprise secret. That doesn't bar people from spewing all kinds of rumours, such as it using cartridges (which would make it portable since a home console using cartridges is cringey, it would take us to 20 years ago. Those would really be some kickass cartridges for sure).
-
The idea seems nice enough, but we don't know his actual country nor the import taxes, it could end up costing lots more... or not arriving at all... but 300$ a new console in situ... that's too much.

Sorry, I just didn't check your location, I just talked about Europe and America for completion's sake. In Fire Emblem, you have to unlock the banters, by making the units (characters) support one another in battle. The banters are pretty funny and amusing, but they're just not the focus of the game. It's a strategic RPG that plays somewhat like chess, so if you're not into that gameplay, it lacks interest. You can select a "casual" mode where dying characters return to your lineup after battle. Also, as it has a large number of characters, most are only outlined and have basic personalities, though they aren't really bad. There's just nothing like character development. The 2DS is criticised by some as very fragile (God forbid something lands on the unprotected screens), but I wouldn't know, since I went for the standard 3DS. Also it seems awkward to handle, much like the XL model. At least to me. The Vita should be a good buy and keep your hands full for some time. It has a short library? Most last generation consoles do, even 3DS. Not really the top time to be into videogames.
-
As far as I'm concerned, Vita *isn't* dead. It's a complete letdown if you look at it as a modern PSP or as a portable PS4 -very few blockbuster, Western games. But as a "weeaboo" console (pardon the term), focused on Japanese-animu games, it really shines, even more than the 3DS, possibly. You have a pretty big catalogue already available for Vita, with the occasional new entry. As for VLR, I completed it in 3DS without hassle. Also consider the region lockdown for 3DS, especially if you're in Europe, in America you receive more but not by much, there's still some games that don't make it outside of Japan but the major titles are all finding their way into the West. The 3D function for 3DS is just makeup, lots of games don't capitalize on it or haven't it implemented in the first place. Just a thing to appeal to kids, I guess? Nifty Nintendo technology and whatnot. I think Vita is technologically superior to 3DS, but that doesn't make 3DS a "poor" console. Also first-party (Nintendo) games are a force to reckon with in 3DS, you can grab Fire Emblem and that's a really good game. But if you don't quite like it... points are substracted. All in all, you can get a standard 3DS (not XL, plain model, I mean) pretty cheap nowadays, I got the plain black model that's just the less appealing of them all, maybe you'll have more luck. And shortly thereafter, you can grab a Vita with discount when it dies. You'll be getting "obsolete" (previous generation) equipment, but cheap. If a Vita 2 happens, which can be doubted, it will be 200+ dollars. If Vita is discontinued, it will go down to around 90-100 dollars, that's half of it.

What your perfect and worst VN you ever read?
Okarin replied to Nekolover's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Best: choose between Katawa Shoujo, Remember 11, Ever 17 and Virtue's Last Reward. Those were what I enjoyed most and the ones that hooked me the most. Steins;Gate I didn't play, but I watched a gameplay; it's just a different kind of experience. Worst: quite some, but I can't remember clearly... one candidate would be Wanko to Kurasou, Yuki Zakura was mostly bad or uninspiring, and I can't think of anything else. -

Homely and unpopular Japanese girls need entertainment, too.

No one mentioned "Ano Hana"? ("Ano Hi Ni Hana wo Mitsuketa no Namae wa Mada Bokutachi Shiranai", probably made some mistakes) I didn't like the series much, because I think there's some filler and you see the ending coming from miles away, but it's still a emotional ending that caps a laughs and tears story. Since no one mentioned it, I think it's not that popular... also if the novel was released on PC and not PSP, or at least if it had come to the West, things could be different.
-
It has been done since at least the 90s. Check out The vision of Escaflowne (already on its 20th birthday), Kanata Kara (there's a manga, not sure about the anime) and the magnificent Fushigi Yuugi.
