I don't find non-human appearances appealing overall (sci-fi, cyberpunk stuff eg. robots stand a chance but animals are NNNNNNNOPE except mermaids perhaps). However, if the characters explore that non-humanity, like how a few VNs I would not name have an AI character that tries to figure out what love is, then they can become incredible characters. A few of my favorite heroines/female characters (heroines being "romance-able female characters") are memorable solely for this reason. TL;DR: AIs with a good story that explores being an AI make great heroines

Spoilers for the first 10 hrs of FFVI

Also, I find it really overwhelming (going by walkthroughs, forum posts, etc.) when I think about just how much there is to miss in FFVI. Apparently the auction house can be used, people spend hundreds of hours on a barren-ass patch of land called the Veldt, Small storylines everywhere. And I am not even at the part where I love the character themes the most. Terra's and Shadow's are the best easily. The art is nice. I really like the character designs and personalities but it feels like they skip over a lot of potential introductions (celes, for example, first seemed somewhat no-nonsense and cold but later in the opera house she says "am I just a substitute for her?" to Locke which made me feel like I'd missed a metric shitton of character development.

After thinking on it for a few months, I think The House In Fata Morgana is my favorite VN of all time alongside Virtue's Last Reward. VLR on its own is impeccable, especially its story, themes and twists, but it's flawed (shitty art, a few kinda contrived points). The worst thing about it is that it left on a very intense cliffhanger and its sequel Zero Time Dilemma did not deliver on that cliffhanger at all. So I can't recommend/praise it in very high spirits now, knowing it'll be letting down anyone who reads it. The House In Fata Morgana, however, is an altogether different beast. All its components are far more consistent in quality (the overall quality being pretty much top-notch), with beautiful art and music, rock-solid pacing and characters, and a story that just doesn't let you go and you feel empty and fulfilled when it does. It's also wholly self-contained (though there IS a fandisk being translated right now at 38% progress IIRC), and so there isn't anything you need to read before or after it. Seriously can't praise this VN enough, but honestly the surprise I got when I went in with low expectations was part of the package (not that you'd be any worse off for it).

Whether something is "sincere, original, poignant" or "pretentious" depends solely on whether it meets the emotions/moments/insights it promises to deliver, and it changes for each reader.
