  1. First of all, Galge = Gal Game, so the "game" part of the title is redundant. MangaGamer put out an all-ages version of Kira Kira, you could try that. The English patch for Yoake Mae yori Ruri Iro na uses the all-ages version, although it is only a partial patch and the full patch has been put on hold. It still completely translates a few routes.

The main translator for the Ace Attorney franchise recently wrote a good article about translation versus localization (or in other words, literal translation versus liberal translation): http://www.capcom-unity.com/zeroobjections/blog/2014/11/21/localization-and-ace-attorney I found it to be highly interesting and relevant to this thread's topic. Even if you don't agree with everything said, it's good food for thought for anyone on a translation team.

I'd take an improved engine with more resolution options and that kind of thing over what we ended up with Umineko, to be honest.

  8. I would say that in general, the types of charage get the most attention here, with more linear plot-heavy games not getting as much attention. Fuwa posters want to be able to pick a cute waifu. Anyways, I don't think it was too dark. It's not as dark as Kara no Shoujo was, in my opinion. There are actually more light-hearted comedic relief segments, and the main heroine is a total goofball. There are still some brutal murders, of course, but that aspect doesn't overpower the rest of the game. As an interesting aside, I think this generally approximates the tastes of the english-reading VN community as a whole, and actually showcases a change from several years go when story-driven titles were much more popular. I think Katawa Shoujo might have brought a different audience into the picture and caused this development. Up until Cartagra's English release, it had an average rating of 7.82 on VNDB, but the average rating of votes post-translation is only 7.51. That's the difference between being ranked #94, and ranked #200. Typically, when english translations are released, VNDB ratings go up, not down. I think if MG released Cartagra four years ago, it would be receiving a much higher vote average, maybe above 8.0. Likewise, if Kara no Shoujo was released this year as opposed to four years ago, it would have a much lower rating. That said, I don't think many individuals' tastes have changed, just that there are a lot more people reading VNs these days, and most of the newbies seem to prefer charage.
  9. I thought this was interesting. It gets a solid 7/10 from me. Some of the endings felt underwhelming. I also didn't like the true ending too much, but I guess it gave an outlet for Kazuna's endless optimism. I thought the setting and atmosphere were well done, and I liked the art. The translation was also really good. Seems like hardly anyone is talking about it even though it's a decent new release.

  13. ef - a fairy tale of the two. It is basically a collection of multiple loosely related stories, each of which has a different male protagonist and a different main heroine. So multiple heroines, but no heroine choices or alternate routes. edit: I get the feeling you wouldn't like the first chapter.
  14. I'm finishing up some bad ends in Cartagra. I've already gotten the true end. There were some things I didn't like so much but overall it wasn't bad. In a convenient turn of events, the Cannon Ball patch was just released, so I'm downloading that game now and will probably make it my next one.

  16. Again, you're missing context. The "On the other hand" part does change the meaning of the line, and can easily make it refer to another line that isn't in the screenshot. "On the other hand" can be used to call back to something without having to provide the context within the sentence. "An event occurred. As a result, thing A happened. On the other hand, that led to thing B happening." When reading this sequence, you're probably going to connect the third statement to the first and not the second. Perhaps to improve clarity they should have added in an "also", "that also led to thing B happening." But eh, like I said, i doubt it's a big deal in context.
  17. Obviously, it's missing some context, but there aren't any egregious english errors. With the proper context, it's probably fine. I'm not entirely sold on the "Humanoid cats" thing, though. It's a mouthful to say so I can't imagine it as a casual name for a common type of pet.

They could have done something actually interesting and announced they were planning on porting over the upcoming PS3/Vita version's content and using that as the basis for their all-ages release, and not their self-made hackjob. You know, I really have to wonder why Pulltop bothered establishing Moenovel instead of going to someone else. Moenovel's mission statement is that they wish to provide inspirational and bittersweet games for all people. They want to be the Lifetime (american TV network) of visual novels. But Pulltop had exactly one game that can possibly fit that mold, Konosora, and that's only after they removed a ton of content. Nothing else in Pulltop's catalog can even come close to offering that kind of experience. So do they not have a gameplan from here on out, beyond simply milking IMHHW for all its worth? I think someone asked this earlier, and I don't think the corporate structure at Will allows them to freely tap into the entire catalog, there would still be licensing nonsense involved. And I don't think there are many Will games that would fit Moenovel's ideals.
  20. If you actually deconstruct the two lines, they mean two very different things. One implied that Minase made a vocal claim that they were dating Habane, and the other did not. And in the original Japanese text, that implication was never made, so why make it in the English text? That's literally changing the story. This may not be important to you, but getting lots of little things like that wrong is what makes a translation confusing to read, as the story will start contradicting itself. By making sure the translation doesn't change the story, you avoid confusing the reader, and that's pretty important in my book.

  23. I don't want to drop Osadai but it's really tempting. I'm stalled halfway through Yukino's route, after completing the other three, so I'm almost done but I really don't feel like going through the same song and dance for the fourth time. Remi and Josef are at it yet again, only with slightly different motivations and methods. I can finish it in just a few hours I'm sure, but I'm not really inspired to do so right now. Hopefully I'll go back to it some day but I have a bad habit of dropping things right before the end. I actually couldn't tell you why. I started up Cartagra instead. It's okay so far. It's a little bit different in tone than I was expecting (I didn't expect the main heroine to be an energetic goofball character) but I like it so far.
  24. There are also some really great translations that are at least on par with Grisaia but the games themselves aren't popular here so no one mentions them. Like Hanachirasu. Its translator, Makoto, is extremely skilled and Hanachirasu had a great translation. I think one of the things a lot of people mistake about translation is that conveying the original author's intent does not always mean providing a literal translation. I see the philosophy a lot where translators will just translate the words and then try to make them fit into a mostly proper english sentence. These usually read awkwardly and comes across as stiff. When this happens, the personalities of the characters don't come across as well, the humor isn't as funny, the emotional beats aren't as strong. Basically, there's no heart in it when it's translated that way. I think trying to understand and convey what the author was trying to say is almost more important than simply telling us what the words mean. This is where translations like Grisaia shine, because Koestl seemed to understand the work very well and was able to express that in English brilliantly.
