I can tell you for sure that I have several PS2 games that have different voice actresses than the PC version. In fact, often the PS2 and the anime have the same actresses. Looking up Yumiko in the japan wikipedia article for Grisaia, I see that the PC version has Hikaru Isshiki. If you click on her, you'll see she has a long list of erogame roles. But the PSP version has Ryouko Tanaka, who is an anime actress. As to the 1st part, about Michiru, I looked at the article for Kaori Mizuhashi and it does not mention any alias. The other actress does not have a wikipedia article. Are the aliases so secret that even wikipedia doesn't know about it? If someone has a case of a known alias that we can look up, that will help us know for sure.

I remember those fun times. I still use JWPce, but not for automatic lookup. But at the beginning, I did the same manual copy and paste using JWPce. Translation Aggregator by default includes many web translation options. But it also includes the JParser mode. Forward-thinking fellow that he is, the author of TA made it possible to shut all that junk off except for the JParser. And with JParser running, you don't even have to highlight anything. It catches all the words from the text hooker automatically, if you see an unknown word you position your mouse pointer over it and the definition from EDICT pops up. By the way, this sounds fun to me, too. My level is intermediate. But I am completely new to Skype...

Coming up next, I will finally try To Heart in earnest. The importance of this title to moe VN history eclipses even Kanon. Besides, it's cute. And I will return to Yoake (i.e. Brighter than Dawning Blue), because I still have Midori's, Mia's, and Wreath's route left, and the true route. I wonder if this is the year that the English translation will be finished. If it is, I wonder if the translation will do it justice. If so, moege fans are in for a real treat. DID YOU KNOW? I just finished Mafuyu's route of Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo. Although I'm sure it's part of the attraction of this title, I haven't yet felt a need to play the harem route, maybe later. But to say a few words about it: The game, which is produced by Omega-star, supported by Favorite, has a lot more going for it than the anime: HQ character artwork, cute characters, zany comedy, and surprisingly romantic. And I learned a lot about how ice cream is made. As for the H-scenes, some were rather amazing, many were irritatingly long, and several made me squeamish. It's a bit much. IMHO, cut the number of H-scenes in half, and you'd have a better game. Oh, incidentally, the writer of the story likes Kanji. A lot.

There are other skills involved, though. Just because you know Japanese doesn't necessarily mean you can translate well. By the same token, but I think even more emphatically, just because you know Japanese doesn't necessarily mean you can write a good textbook. And I think that those translators you mention are mainly busy...translating. Making a textbook would be a full-time endeavor. I have thought about it, because I think it would be nice if there were another guide to Japanese that doesn't teach it with mangled "English" the way Tae Kim's guide does. But I figured that interested people would simply seek out a real textbook. Is there something you have against actual books? If you get them used, you don't have to pay that much...and then if you need help/clarification you can still get that for free from the community...

Well, I am all for translating console versions of games when they provide extra scenes, etc. But in this case, do the console versions have anything significant that the Windows version doesn't? If not, why not the Windows version of Tokimeki Memorial

I tried that ToLoveRu vn for PSP and it was rather disappointing. The mini-games ended up annoying me. The Cero-B rating annoyed me even more. C'mon, it's ToLoveRu! Making a Cero-B vn out of ToLoveRu was not exactly a master-stroke. Ai Yori Aoshi vn didn't really hold my interest either...even though I really enjoyed the anime...even though I could play it in English so it was easier... Maybe somehow the depth/detail I expect from a vn isn't there, when they go the anime -> VN route? I haven't given up though. Someday I will try both of the Aria vn's for instance. Maybe even that My Hime one.

I watch the anime 1st, basically for the same reasons Okami gave at the top. But I'll state for the record that I'm really an anime fan, so anime _always_ has top priority: don't be misled by my only having a VNDB entry, my anime list is already so large that I can't bring myself to put it on MAL, which has no way to import from a spreadsheet.

Your feeling is right on the money. It's really just another genre of VN. Only careful scrutiny of VNDB will tell you if a novel something you really want to read, nukige is only one of the tags to pay attention to. It doesn't necessarily mean the quality is on a certain level. Only, people would rather see things in black and white...

I read that there are currently 5 volumes in the series, and the anime was based on the first 4 volumes. So, if more novels are written, I guess they can make another season.

This filter setting is not what's implied in the topic though. Yes, you can exclude nukige or any other VN genre using tags, that's fine. And you've got English as the language, and that's fine. But you need to select Original Language = Japanese. Otherwise, you won't get a correct translated VN list. The other problem is, you will get unfinished translations as well as translated ones. I don't think there is a filter for that.

People...This is a slice-of-life, character-based show and from that standpoint it's superb. Anyone whose judging it based on the mystery content alone or the romance content alone may as well choose another show.

Done w/ Shuffle, what a delightful VN, at first I wasn't quite sure what to make of the BGM, but it grew on me, and it fits of the mood of the game quite well. (I was particularly amused by the one that used the Westminster school chimes as part of the accompaniment.) I didn't get as emotional during Shuffle as some of the other VNs I played (unless moe overload is an emotion), but that's okay with me...I don't insist that every game make me cry or anything. For Valentine's Day I most likely will go back and play Mirai no Kimi to Subete no Uta ni again. Because it's very romantic and very first-personish. Yes, I will bask in the illusory warmth of the artificial glow of Miku's love for as long as that brief VN lasts until it finally fades away, plunging me back into the cold of loneliness and the darkness of despair. Or something like that. In the meantime, maybe I'll go back to Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo for a while. It's kind of like Shuffle on steroids--no, rather, aphrodisiacs.

I took German in high school, and managed to get one year of Italian in, in college. Although it was primarily the usual academic approach, they did try to at least get some immersion in there...use English as little as possible during class, have exercises where you talk to your classmates, etc. Needless to say, all that experience I gained is gone now. However, at least I remember what it was I needed to learn and gained experience with all the grammatical terminlogy they throw at you. With Japanese, I studied on my own and it was purely academic. I was learning in order to read, that's all. Still, I came much farther than I did with either of the languages I took in school. You could almost say I learned Japanese the way people learn Latin, for reading only. Although, due to years of exposure anime and games, I can understand speech to a reasonable degree. But I am lousy at producing. It's a different skillset, apparently, because it takes me forever to say anything. It doesn't help matters that Japanese seems to start from the wrong end of the sentence :-) This probably will only be fixed if I spend some decent time in Japan. Due to my life circumstances, that will not happen anytime soon.

(Of course, the original game is in Japanese, so you would be translating from a previous translation. I don't recommend this, but I don't advise against it, either.) By the way, I am also a big fan of Amagami SS (and Kimikiss Pure Rouge)

This week I watched Windaria, last seen by me almost 10 years ago. Now this is a movie that I would confidently put up against anything by Miyazaki or Shinkai. This is from the era of 100% hand drawn anime movies. Well, I wasn't sure it would make me cry a 2nd time, but it did. After all that heavy drama and emotion, I needed a pick-me-up. I found it in last year's anime Fantasista Doll. I haven't been so overloaded with moe for some time. I mean, those characters are really really kawaii :-) I find myself humming the OP song frequently. It brightens my day every time I watch that show.
