  1. I got asked what I was doing for this blog this month just today, by several people (probably because this is the longest time I've gone without posting since I started this blog). So... I suppose I'll go ahead and tell you. First, the two titles I'm reading on request (though I was planning on doing one anyway). Sakura no Mori Dreamers (reading now) Ruri no Ie (yes, it is not exactly something I would normally bother with, but he was insistent... sort of like with Maggot Baits) The rest of the releases this month I'm considering playing: Soshite Hatsukoi ga Imouto ni naru Seiken Tsukai no Proposition (by a new company, might suck, might not) Natsuiro Kokoro Log (this is by Hearts, a company infamous for producing kusoge, lol) Tarareba (by Aries, that makes decent to horrible charage) Personally, from what I've played, if they don't screw it up, I think Sakura no Mori Dreamers will probably end up being the best. However, my past experiences with Moonstone's rare attempts to be serious tell me that that feeling isn't really trustworthy. Clear started out good but went downhill with terrifying speed, for instance. Their single best game is Maji Suki, and that was seven years ago... though Natsu no Iro no Nostalgia was pretty good, for Moonstone.

  2. Okay, so here I am try to following the tradition and confused how to write this. And if you found my post awkward, I'm sorry about that. So, about my activity in Fuwanovel, I actually joined in December 2014, but I didn't post as much as right now ie only came occasionally and post if something interest me. Then, back at November made Koichoco discussion thread, and the result was quite good (Also back in VNDB it was less lively). Since then, I decided to be more active here and I decided to introduce myself back at January. And as you could see, now I'd reach 500 posts here. Okay, maybe I'd spamming a little here, but to anyone else who read this, hopefully my post here would be useful and if not, I'm sorry about that. In here, I'd met with many good member here. And so I'll try to express my thanks here to some member @Tay @Nayleen Thanks for maintaining this site. I'd several time experience when Fuwanovel was down, and both of you always try to got it fix fast (At least according from the Twitter). Also thanks to Tay for establishing VNTS, which right now is the VN Translation Progress that I follow (And made the review) right now. @Down @Kaguya @Nosebleed Thanks for being Global Moderator here (And also I'd still call you 'Elite Four of Fuwanovel', although one member was inactive right now though). Good luck being moderator here, and sorry if I bothered you in the past. Oh, and to Nosebleed thanks for continuing Dracu Riot translation. @Zenophilious Thanks for answering some of my question here. Also for moderating the thread @CeruleanGamer I knew you didn't came here lately, but I still remember you give many tips for Eiyuu Senki. Oh, and if you read this, I enjoyed Eiyuu Senki. Thanks for your Eiyuu Senki tips and some of gameplay VN, although I remember more from Eiyuu Senki though (Also, your tier list from GOLD was interesting). @Decay We already met since I was active back at VNDB. And you always give some interesting info about VN Translation, which spark my interest. So, I'd decided to follow your step by commented on VNTS (And by the way, I like your musing in VNTS). Also @Zakamutt for making VNTS, although I didn't interact with him much though. @Arcadeotic Although claimed himself to be cold, I knew you really nice guy to have around here (And quite cool I guess). Anyway, thanks for reading my VNTS Review here (Also for translating Bishoujo Mangekyou). @Dergonu Thanks for welcomed me back at my very late introduction thread, and I knew you really like yuri. Oh, and thanks for translating Tsui Yuri. @Rooke Thanks for interesting insight about VN, although I need some time to digest it. @Clephas Thanks for some of your VN Review, even if you didn't the VN itself. I'd also like to say thanks to all of new Fuwanovel member here. Looking back from 2012, I'd already take some interest in Fuwanovel, although I didn't knew I will become involving in this forum though. And by the way I think new member mean that Fuwanovel here was indeed growing, but I also understand that some old member like @OriginalRen didn't like the change though. Also, about my VNTS Review, the reason was I already like to follow Visual Novel Translation Progress since back at 2012, and I'd find it interesting that VN industry right now compared to be around 2000 or so. I think that's all for my 500th post here, and sorry if I couldn't express myself here well and bad English here. PS - I'll try to answer any question that any of Fuwanovel member ask here, as long as it's reasonable of course.

  4. Porn doesn't have to be art. Porn can just be porn. That still doesn't discredit its existence in any way, shape or form. Again I'm repeating myself but this comes down entirely to people's taste in the genre. You clearly hate sex scenes, and that's fine, but don't bash other people and call them delusional for merely having a different preference. You are literally trying to justify a personal preference of yours as some universal fact, and I'm sorry to tell you but that won't go anywhere. And let's assume everything you said is true. That h-scenes give a bad name to vns, that h-scenes are pointless, that they literally only harm the medium. EVEN THEN, that is still no reason for people not to like them. I think you should just accept the fact there are different audiences in the medium and in this case you're just not part of it.

  5. Hi everyone, I've created over 2000 tracks of music and sound effects that you are welcome to freely use in visual novels, games or anything else you like. It's all original...all my own work. All I ask is to be attributed as detailed on my homepage: http://soundimage.org/ I sincerely hope my tracks are helpful. Any and all feedback is welcome and always appreciated! All the best, Eric

  6. I can't sympathise with this sentiment. As unfortunate as this is, this sentiment reeks of people having a soft spot for the companies that have existed so far. While we owe them an awful lot, it does not mean that this is a sustainable business model in the long term. Assuming the original VN company does a good job of localising it to English, and it becomes successful, they reap all the financial rewards from any English sales and they're more likely to localise all their future titles to English. The only ones that stand to lose from this are the companies that exist solely to localise Japanese material they didn't author in the first place. If the company creating the artwork in the first place gets the most profits from their own creation that's better for the industry at large, as it keeps them in business, and cuts out one middleman. That can only lead to more VNs and more localisation long term. I'm aware of how bad some attempts at localisation have been so far, but that doesn't mean it will always be that way. It's a learning process for them too.

  7. Thanks everyone who thought I did a good job, since English is not my first language I was really insecure about it. I liked this game too, even with all it's problems I enjoyed it. The art really was the game most standing point, it's a shame that there are so few CGs in this game tho, I would love if there was at least one more CG for each guy, but that just me being greed, rofl. I didn't expect this game to have a good story or anything too, since I played the other Yoshiwara Game I kinda knew what I was getting myself into, and to tell you the truth even so I was really surprised by Ohgiya, aside from two characters the other three had interesting routes, imo. About the protagonist, I don't know if it was just me who had problem with her. I think because the first route I played she was really duty driven and thought a lot about what she had to do, being the daughter of a "rich" family and all, I thought she would be like that in all the routes, cause I really liked how she acted in this particular route. Maybe I exaggerated a little, but I really didn't like how she would be so selfish and kinda childish in other routes, I don't know (/●◔∀◐●)/ Maybe I shouldn't expect a good Heroine from a mobile port too. The music is my biggest problem with all these Dogenzaka Lab otome games, they get repetitive so fast and makes me want to mute the game and listen to Llamas screaming instead. If they could at least transition the tracks smoothly it would help A LOT (imo, of course). But then again, shouldn't expect too much since it's a mobile port ( ´_ゝ`) Musashi was indeed the best guy and I still doesn't understand why he doesn't have a route??? Like, if the whole purpose of the protag going to Yoshiwara was to get pregnant she could do just fine with Musashi (/●◔∀◐●)/ Guess it's something cultural about the island or something like that, I gave up trying to understand what's the deal with all the "There's no man in this island" thing. And I didn't know if it was a good idea to summarize the routes, I was thinking if I had to do that or not... So I decided to try and don't spoil anything about the game, don't know if it was the right choice or not, lol

  9. I realized halfway through the blog post that I was eating a hot dog while reading it (with mustard, of course). It rated somewhere around a 2 on the "surreal moment scale". I have absolutely nothing of substance to add to the conversation, though.

  10. I don't see any use in stretching the definition of visual novel. What good does that do anyone? It's okay for these games to be something other than VNs. It's okay to like things that aren't VNs, you don't have to transform everything you like into a VN. I just don't get why people want to do that so badly.

  12. These guys are on a roll with yuri licenses. Great to see the manga adaptation will be available to an English audience as well. Note this manga does not tell the same story as the VN, it's about different characters in the same setting, so it's still great for fans of the original VN. The manga is done by Itou Hachi who, in my opinion, makes some of the cutest yuri stories ever. I avidly recommend checking out some of his other series like Legally Married Yuri Couple, Chiyo's Marriage, and Sayuri's Sister is an Angel. For those that don't know Seven Seas, they've licensed lots of yuri titles in the past, including the famous Girl Friends by Morinaga Milk, which I have a physical copy of and can say it's of really nice quality. Other yuri titles also recently announced by Seven Seas: Kase-san and Morning Glories (Takashima Hiromi) https://witter.com/gomanga/status/737725482200911872 Secret of the Princess (Morinaga Milk) https://twitter.com/gomanga/status/737694049465991168 I expect to see more yuri titles from them announced soon as well. They promise their yuri catalog will bloom in 2017.

  14. Thanks for some very thoughtful points made by some very thoughtful folks — Palas, Zakamutt, maefdomn, Decay, etc. (But not Rooke. Never Rooke. ) If it wasn’t already clear, the above blog post was 70% me playing devil’s advocate, 10% me being serious, and 20% me just wanting to talk about hot dogs. I’ll happily admit I have Gone Home tagged as adventure in my personal games database, and that’s exactly the genre I’d expect to find it under were I looking for it in a store. But after I finally got around to playing Gone Home — backlog ahoy! — it occurred to me to ask, “Well, why couldn’t this be considered a visual novel?” The meat of it was inherently literary, and the extratextual gameplay almost non-existent. Then I realized almost all the obvious counter-arguments I could think of stemmed not from a positive definition of what VNs are, but from a negative definition of what VNs shouldn’t be. “Gone Home lets me explore in a way that VNs don’t.” “Gone Home gives me a sense of immersion and agency that VNs don’t.” It’s akin to arguing that tomatoes must be vegetables because fruit stands don’t sell tomatoes. And that’s the part that really interests me. There’s a pervasive sameyness among VNs; maefdomn does a good job addressing some of the reasons why. The answer to “What’s a visual novel?” ends up being, “It’s something that’s like the visual novels I’ve played,” rather than a more useful discussion about what the essential elements of a VN are and aren’t. (Chronopolis’s VNBD definition is a good start, but only a start.) Without knowing where the outer edges of the art form are, both mechanically and creatively, we can’t fruitfully explore those edges. And that leaves us with wave after wave of lookalike kickstarted VNs whose main selling points are the number of romanceable characters they have and whether or not they feature imoutos. There will always be a place for that, of course, but there's room for so much more.

  15. Few days ago I was staying at night at work and had nothing to listen. So I started on youtube Katawa Shoujo read by some random guy... and I liked. I didn't listen to whole thing, I didn't have 20 hours, but common route and start of Emi route were really great. I must say that I enjoyed it probably even better than first time(it was my first VN, 1.5 year ago), cause I had a chance to compare Katawa to 'typical japanesse' VN, I've read since them. And Katawa really momentarily really shines at their background. No not every reread experience is bad. I also have rather poor memory and tend to forget many plot points in books/shows/movies, so sometimes even twists are surprising even when uncovered the second time. Can't wait for MuvLuv.

  17. ABOUT SAKURA DUNGEON In this story (porn game) players (basement dwellers) will assume the role of an ancient fox spirit (with huge boobs) who awakens after several hundred years of deep sleep to find that possession of her lovingly made dungeon has been taken from her (by creatures who, also, have big boobs)! As if that wasn’t enough cause for alarm, she has also been robbed of her power (ability to keep clothing on), leaving her weak and vulnerable (to boobs). She soon discovers that it was a heroic knight who woke her from her slumber (by copping a feel... on her boobs), and after a brief fight (foreplay) and “negotiation,” (sex) the knight decides to join her (for more sex) on an adventure (of sex) to reclaim the dungeon (or her vagina, whichever comes first)! Together, they will unearth great treasures (boobies galore), reveal secrets (euphemism for vaginas) and hidden rooms (also euphemism for vaginas), and recruit monster girls (with huge tracts of land) to fight by their side (threesomes and gang bangers)...all while avoiding traps (dude looks like a lady), fighting off dangerous enemies (who have huge boobs) and bosses (oppai oppai oppai) across multiple floors, and uncovering the devious plans (new sex toys) of the new dungeon lord (who has huge boobs). One of the most important mechanics of Sakura Dungeon is the ‘capture’ ('grope') mechanic, wherein the player will be able to capture monster girls (needless to say, monster girls are endowed with huge boobs) they encounter and add them to their party (harem).

  18. Alright. The thread has ran its course and I'll be off for now. I had to hide 15 posts while the thread was running. It's 1/3 of everything that was posted here. This thing has been super close to blowing up all the time. Taking that into account, I don't believe leaving it up is a wise choice. Because of that, I'll be closing it. Inb4 I'm Hitler. Night, everyone.

Update: Confusion and rioting in the streets as Invision misplaced all the pennies we sent them. I contacted them and gave them the peoples' demands: chat, forums, and liberty Invision was like, "Nah, bro" I was like, "Yeah, 'bro.'" They were like, "Oh. Okay." TL;DR: Should be back up shortly.

  20. I want Winged Cloud to make good games. I want any developer to make good games. Playing good games (or VN's) is my (the consumer's) ultimate objective. Regardless of their past record, this title appears to be written decently, in that it is easy to comprehend what is being said. The art seems to be the same as always, though I never understood why people like the art so much anyway, and the music also sounds good. Assuming the dungeon segments are not terrible, and by that I mean that there should be a sense of progression, then I have no reason not to buy this game. I will wait and observe for a little long- Wait, they use British spelling?! *buys*

  22. I can personally recommend Gone Home, if only to see what everyone is/was talking about (well, apart from that it's quite good). Pretty much everything is delivered either through text or voiceover (voiceovers are triggered by finding and reading text on objects), with some context given by the 3d environment (such as a certain hidden whiskey (I can't actually remember the type of liquor) bottle you can spot in a room; interesting touch that one). As an amusing touch to show you what the focus of the game is, there's actually a key that makes you lean in a bit for a closer look at something. I don't think it'd hold up that well if you actually were to publish it as an epistolary novel, but that comes with the territory; if the digital part isn't part of the story's power, why have it present at all?

  27. As someone who usually rereads old VNs rather than starting new ones, I can confirm that the magic does indeed disappear after the initial playthrough, but that isn't always the case. Sadly, for VNs centered around mystery and places major importance on the story more so than anything else, the second playthrough more or less will end in a disappointment. This isn't always the case, however. Sometimes, playing an nostalgic classic, which you adored at one point, like Corpse Party for me, will retain some if not all of its old charm. But sometimes looking through the nostalgia-goggles just isn't enough, like in this case you experienced. It's quite sad when an old favorite doesn't hold up any longer, but alas, nothing can be done. I myself haven't read 999, but I'd assume it more or less feels like reading it with explicit and horribly detailed spoilers when reading it again.

  30. @Kenshin_sama, It's cropped better than the last one. Personally, I'd try cutting the ahoge to either show more of her body or close-in the zoom (right now there are little pieces to the side that only show what I presume to be the sea, which could be removed if you showed your character more closely) , but if you want to show the "guitar" text I guess there's no choice. 7/10. It's nice. Spending a few seconds with it, here's how I'd personally crop it, if you're interested: And because I don't have anything better to do with my time (other than working, but who the hell works at work?), I also tried cropping a completely different one of her, with a cleaner (but probably less cute) picture:

  31. After watching Mondaiji-tachi, I so very desperately want a second season for it, but alas, that's not going to happen. At least I have light novels. Another two are from my favorite animes, Hyouka and OreGairu, but Hyouka isn't going to happen because of the amount of source material for a second season is lacking, and OreGairu could happen, but thne it's going to take a while. One other such LN adaptation is Overlord, which I crave for oh so much. RIP

  37. A common recommendation for translating such scenes is to take whatever you've written as an initial translation and then say it out loud it after putting something in your mouth (fingers are a common recommendation, but you do what you gotta do) and then transcribe that sound to get the same effect. That said, "shtahf" is probably what I'd end up with for "stop", and is probably going to be completely indecipherable, and that kinda matches my usual experience whenever I've tried to do this. So I tend to just leave whatever the original translator thought was best, which is typically a straightforward translation of the actual word, not some garbled phonetical transcription of the translation. I think that original recommendation is probably only good if you're transcribing, and is not a good idea if you're translating; it may work fine for the original JP transcription to do the more phonetically-correct thing, but an English reader is lacking the additional vocal clues, and therefore is going to just be confused by it. Heck, clearly the JP-savvy people here were pretty confused with the JP transcription and no vocal clues, but I bet they would have had no initial confusion if they'd heard a sound clip.

  38. I do play eroge. I like them and have no problems with other people playing them as well. Seems like you're the only person, who feels otherwise. That aside, who are you - we - to judge the value of visual novels as a medium and artistic form of expression? There is no such thing as 'good' or 'bad', 'right' or 'wrong'; only sacrum and profanum. A good story is a combination of both, whether you like it or not. But vn industry was and will always be associated with 'porn' to an extent; there's no reason to deny it, nor change it. Why do you seem so upset about it? No one forces you to play eroge you don't like. Play those vn's, you'd like to and stop discussing other people's tastes; it's pointless.

  39. Dicussing this is fine, as long as you don't turn it into what happened in the last thead (which was broken beyond recovery.) Please, don't stop to shitpost. I don't know whether or not this person is baiting, but it really doesn't matter. Given how the last one ended up, this thread will be moderated much more strictly than what we usually do around here. Hope you understand. Now, happy discussing! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, I do like H scenes. VNs allow you to know the characters better and hold feelings for them, which has a pretty nice effect on the H itself. I read them for both H and the story (oftentimes separately, though.) By the way, I don't see much of a contradiction with saying that "I dislike H-scenes, but they're there for the sales" The point of the argument is that, in general, people are more likely to buy titles with H scenes than they are to buy titles without it. People saying that are making a statement about the majority of the VN-buying public, not about themselves. Whether or not the statement is correct is an entirely different matter. I know little data about it, so all that I can offer are my observations and speculation - Some VNs certainly can thrive without H-scenes. A (probably valid) argument against that is that only big-name publishers have the luxury of making said non-H VNs, though. Either way, the fact nukige tend to sell pretty well indicates that there's a pretty good interest in H scenes, at the very least.
