La Fin du Monde Review
masster_auron and one other reacted to littleshogun for a blog entry
Visual Novel Translation Status (06/25/2016) Okay, for all French reader or user here, don't worry. What I mean here is the title for opening song of one VN in image header (Grisaia no Meikyuu) in French (Because Grisaia like to use French, so I decided to use the Frech from opening title for this week review). The opening title was World's End, and I must admit it was quite catchy, although I still thinking Kajitsu was enough. But if you want to play Meikyuu, go ahead and beware of cliffhanger at the end. Anyway, here's my VNTS Review for this week and sorry for a bit late here. As for this week, we had many progress from fan translation alone. While for Sekai and Mangagamer, it was still their usual. However, this week we had surprise from other segment. So I think I'll start from Mangagamer section first, then Fan Translation, Sekai, and finally Other. Oh, beforehand as the opening news for anyone who cares, we had Sonicomi entering Golden Master according to JAST Twitter here (I should report it at last week, but I forgot). Mangagamer Nothing too excited if we looking from their progress, although full translation of Da Capo 3 was of course welcome news here (At least Kouryuu managed to fulfill his promise by fully translating it before AX 2016, or to be exact 11 or so days before it). But even after translating finished there's still editing (Which right now it was at 98%), scripting, and beta testing. Hopefully they'll managed to release Da Capo 3 this year. For more info, this VN was had some history once again with Fuwanovel. I'll try to elaborate more later. For other progress, we had Pygmalion 16% edited, Fata Morgana fandisc 18% translated, Imopara 2 48% translated and a quarter edited, and Kuroinu 80% translated and 21% edited. Not much comment needed here, other than if Pygmalion need 2 weeks for 8% editing progress, will it fully edited at December first week I wonder (And obviously it'll be released in 2017 duh). I think that's all for Mangagamer section this week. Oh, and by the way none of the project was in scripting if you still curious how about Mangagamer will give us news in regard of their in scripting project. Fan Translation We had so many progress from here. Let me try to round up all of them here. Hanasaki had Hikari's route 16% translated. By the way admin Tay, you mistaken Inori for Hikari. The right one once again it was Hikari's route that translated at 16%. Majokoi was at 17.08% translated and 10.68% edited. By the way, the team was in need of 2 beta testers. If you interested, just look at this blog post here. Oh, and they almost had prologue patch ready for release. Bishoujo Mangekyou was fully translated and 20.3% edited. Arcadeotic said the release date could be in a few months (Hopefully this year). Tsui Yuri was 40% translated and 30% edited. Kanobito was had 110 scripts left to translated according to @mitchhamilton. Good luck to endure more sex scene Mitch, because from VNDB and some review I knew that this game had high sex count. Majikoi A-1 fandisc was released. Good for hardcore Majikoi fan I guess. Although I didn't care too much about this, I'm still thanking the team for completing original Majikoi translation project though. Tsuki no Yorisou project was finally added to the VNTS. Congratulations, and since if we look at the overall translation progress it was quite hard to tell if this project was advancing or not, I'll just report the progress from the route. And for this week we had prologue and common route fully translated, and Luna route was at 15% translated. Astral Air was touching 90% progress for both translation and editing (Actually each week before the percentage was the progress for both), or to be exact the progress itself was at 92.50% (Too bad it wasn't 4% progress though (Only 3.67% progress), but I'm still grateful okay). Okay, since Tay already said congratulation to Chuee at his Twitter, let me said congratulations for very big progress to the translator himself, @SupremeTentacle. Okay, I think that's all for roundup this week at Fan translation section. For last word, I think this section was had most exciting if we look at the progress, although for the release it was quite not so exciting to me though (Only Majikoi A -1 fandisc, although once again if you hardcore Majikoi fan go ahead and play it). Sekai Project Actually also their usual once again if we look at their progress. Okay for the opening news, congratulations for very big success kickstarter for Princess Knight (Around 36,000 fund gathered, which was 3 times original goal (12,000)). And this week we had 2 projects completed in term of translation progress (Darekoi and WEE Episode 3), while we also had one almost completed translation project here (Nashville was translated at 98.04%). For more progress, we had Maitetsu was at 13.09% translated and Chrono Clock was at 20.95% translated. For My Little Kitties, well I think it's like Nekopara, only we had one catgirl and also we had Sakura Ayane and Uchida Maaya working as seiyuu there somehow in Korean VN (By the way, I remember that their role at Gochiusa was Cocoa and Sharo respectively). As for the biggest release from Sekai, it was obviously Meikyuu and I think I'd commented enough both on forum and the first paragraph. Other Okay, actually other than Corona Blossom Chapter 1 which almost funded at this point (Only 489 left to be funded) there's no update from this section. But this section was had surprised us. The surprise was ChuSingura 46+1 Chapter 1 was released and free to play at the Steam. It means that the Kickstarter was real, if it's a bit unrefined. Actually from some review that I'd read, ChuSingura was one of very good VN, and actually this release could maybe introduce the good VN to the people outside Japan. Although if I may said, this release had the problem. Not in term of translation or the censorship (The censorship reason was actually understandable because unlike MoeNovel case, this time there's a reason that they had experience to released it on PSP before), but more in engine which one user said it was more likely caused by the engine wasn't fitting for the VN itself and more fitting to the mobage. Hopefully if JAPAN or NextNinja still willing to release next ChuSingura chapters, they will fix the engine to make the game more comfortable to play. Also hopefully the JAPAN will to fix the communication with the fan. Oh, and for last word, if I may praise JAPAN here, it would be their decision to release ChuSingura Chapter 1 because from there we could see of how serious they were actually by sort of showing translation example. I think that's all for this week, and sorry if I miss some progress. See you next week. PS - Forgot one more progress, and it's Bokuten. For Bokuten, right now it was 95% edited.2 points -
Random VNs: Draculius
Chronopolis and one other reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
NSFW? I'll say it straight out... in my mind, Draculius is one of the top two vampire VNs in existence... with the other one being Vermilion by Light. Meromero Cute was a company that had a tendency toward making... eccentric works. Mahou Shoujo no Taisetsu na koto is particularly memorable for the cross-dressing protagonist who spends a ridiculous amount of time being reverse-raped in a magical girl costume... It used the fact that nobody expects mahou shoujo stories and settings to be consistent to go a bit crazy... Draculius is a bit different... the protagonist, Jun, is the kind of guy who would be a hero in an otome game. While he isn't voiced (a mistake in my mind, but one that is common) his narration and lines have so much personality that you never see him as a 'standard' protagonist. There are precisely two paths in this VN... a 'joke' path where Jun doesn't make the full transition to a vampire during the story (focused on Rian and Zeno), and a true path, where Jun confronts the people hiding behind the curtains in the course of building his vampiric harem of a trigger-happy tsundere vampire-hunting nun, an ancient vampire who was once his father's vassal and lover, a vampire 'ojousama' whom everyone takes joy in teasing, and a loyal werewolf maid who makes a hobby out of tricking her mistress into making a fool of herself. The action in this VN is actually a bit above the standard for chuunige of the era, though it doesn't match works by Light. At times there are battles of wits, and there is enough comedy to make a lot of modern charage seem boring. To this day, I've never met a loli in a VN that matches Belche for characterization (yes, I include stuff by Favorite). The multitude of roles she takes on and the layers to her personality and viewpoint on life make her one of the few 'ancient heroines' who doesn't seem in the least bit fake. One of the things that is most important in a vampire story of any type is the perspective... to be blunt, a vampire setting where the vampires don't drink blood or are fundamentally harmless is... boring, to say the least. Vampires in Draculius are nothing of the sort... in particular 'Seconds', vampires made from humans, can only turn humans into zombie-like Roams (and can potentially do so just by biting someone), so vampirism is actually a legitimate threat. Firsts, like the protagonist and Rian (also called Shiso, like the True Ancestors in the Tsukihime world), don't have any of the vulnerabilities of their servant vampires... and they can make vampires that are sane. However, most Firsts perspectives are... warped, to say the least. There is nothing worse than a justified sense of superiority to make people insanely arrogant, lol. The actual story of this tilts back and forth between the more absurd slice-of-life and the more serious parts, but this is one of those rare VNs that manages the balance nearly perfectly. People die, the protagonist kills, and the enemy is ruthless (as is Belche, lol). However, the slice of life in this VN tends to serve as a bright and amusing contrast to the darker elements, keeping it from becoming a purely serious VN. Overall, replaying this VN has confirmed to me something that I had more or less guessed over the last few years... they don't make ones like this one anymore, lol. Edit: The pic is Belche just after she became a vampire. Edit2: ... for those who wonder, the h-scenes in this VN... are pretty unique. Most of them switch between Jun's and the girls' perspectives...2 points -
AX 2016 - VN Bingo
Darklord Rooke and one other reacted to Decay for a topic
Lotta people not understanding the concept of bingo itt. Although this chart is a little too easy, imo. Real predictions: A Rance title will be announced, and not Evenicle. Chuablesoft is an easy layup, they'll be one of MangaGamer's new partners. A new clock up title will also almost assuredly be announced there. Possibly Maggot Baits, I think Ero Manga might actually be a little bit more likely. And they'll announce either a new BL or a new Otome title. JAST will announce either Muramasa, or something on the same scale. I don't have any insight into any specific announcements here, but I am told that all three big publishers are basically swinging for the fences here, and a Muramasa announcement would be relatively safe and easy for JAST to do. I also expect a new Alcot game announcement, but I'm less sure about that. I really don't expect more than two announcements from them. SP is always a total unknown. One thing to expect is a lot of actual 18+ announcements. They keep saying "Wait for AX" whenever anyone asks them about anything to do with 18+ stuff, including Maitetsu. And Dovac was talking about how he's happy that AX staff lets them talk openly about and show previews for 18+ stuff. Wild guess: SP will announce an August translation, possibly Daito before Eustia. The editor for the fan translation posted two or three months ago that the project was actually revived with the original translator back on board, and that they were working on the true route or something to that effect. Then we've heard nothing since. I wouldn't be surprised if that was picked up.2 points -

Suzu Fanatic and one other reacted to Vokoca for a topic
Not trying to rain on your parade or anything, but you might actually want to wait before Rakuen is translated as well before you read the grand route. The grand route continues the main plot in the series - but it also has probably the worst cliffhanger in existence. It's just setup with no payoff; unless you have some amazing patience, I would recommend waiting for Rakuen too to save yourself from the suffering. That said Meikyuu also has afterstories for every single route in Kajitsu, and these at least don't attempt to murder you with an unfinished story.2 points -

*cries* Soshite Hatsukoi ga Imouto ni Naru
gustave154 reacted to Clephas for a blog entry
... I'm going to be blunt. It has been a while (think 2014) since any company has produced a nakige that compares to this one. The characters, their backgrounds, their personalities, and the setting all come together to form a story of deep affection, pain, and tears that had me crying more than a dozen times throughout the VN. In terms of heroines, this VN's imoutos are the best. Shinobu is the twisted, obsessive half-yandere, super-capable imouto who adores her niisan (with good reason). Tsubasa is the honest, affectionate, straightforward imouto who is incapable of hiding anything. While the other two heroines kind of pale compared to those two, their routes are another story entirely. I'm going to be straight... there are no bad or under-developed paths in this VN. The characters' emotional and real-life (to them) struggles are intense, engrossing, and emotional. Neneko's and Yuuka's paths are cases of the 'paths surpassing the heroines', a phenomenon that has become sadly rare in recent years, as writing quality has fallen drastically in the charage 'genre'. Technically, Tsubasa's is the true route, but none of the routes were neglected in favor of hers, though I could have wished for an epilogue based a few years later for Shinobu's path (a matter of personal taste). This is a mark of the skill of the writer and the person who designed the scenario, as the fact is that in most cases where there is a true or central heroine, the other heroines tend to be neglected, at least in my experience. The protagonist in this story will probably get mixed reactions out of people, if only because he is a bit angsty, especially when issues of parents come up. He has good reason, as he is a victim of child abuse (he doesn't hide this, and it is revealed within the first half-hour of reading). At heart, he is a good person, but he is very exclusive in the people he cares about and insanely protective of those chosen few. His obsession with his role as a big brother causes some big problems in Shinobu's route, but that is mostly because he is very hard-headed and straight-laced... the type of guy who makes a vow to himself and never breaks it, even in the particulars. Story-wise... this is classic non-Key nakige fare. The protagonist deals with his own issues (to varying degrees) while doing his best for the heroines, the troubles and drama along the way designed to drag the tears out of you, though it all ends happily eventually. I was particularly touched by the healing that occurs in the protagonist in Tsubasa and Neneko's endings (through different methods), and I, for once, wasn't frustrated with the protagonist and heroine's struggles in Shinobu's path. None of the characters' struggles felt forced or unnatural, the way many charage make them seem, which was impressive in and of itself. Overall, this is a first-class addition to anyone's nakige collection, and it is definitely going to be stiff competition for my VN of the Month for May. I wept, I laughed, and I suffered along with the characters and out of sympathy for them. I come out of this VN glad that I played it, a rare experience for a person who is as jaded as I am when it comes to VNs.1 point -

Spring 2016 Anime Discussion
Kurisu-Chan reacted to Jun Inoue for a topic
I'm so fucking happy that Subaru has got what he deserved. He had been acting these past couple of episodes like a classic conceited, self-centred main character of a fantasy novel, and he's been punished by it, in a way that common sense cannot deny. I'm really happy that Re:Zero went the full mile and smacked the shit out of him, instead of going with a "Subaru, I'm so so angry~~~~~~" and then they make up in the same scene. He doesn't even understand that he cannot act like he's some sort of chosen one, doing whatever he feels like, and expect everyone to smirk and go "oh, you~" This episode has made Re:Zero land a solid 9/10, for now.1 point -

I have finished the main engine for the game that will allow me to write the game as a script. I have decided to use the full screen instead of a screen within a screen like I previously thought I would do. I find a full screen image more immersive. I have started work on the beginning of the game. I will make a version available within a few weeks (I hope) that will allow you to see how the game will look and play. It will be very short but I want to get feedback as soon as possible so the game can evolve in a good direction while I work on it. Here is an image of one of the first scenes: Website1 point -
I have a copy of Hadaka Shitsuji with an english patch and the game works fine, but I am struggling to read the text in the dialogue boxes because the spacing of characters is really far apart making it hard to tell when there is a space between words. I was wondering if there is a way for me to change the formatting of the dialogue boxes to make it easier to read (maybe but adjusting the kerning or even the font) EDIT: I fixed it myself.. ended up finding a different patch, found it on aarinfantasy. http://aarinfantasy.com/forum/f16/t171140-hadaka-shitsuji-english-patch.html1 point

It's meant to be used as 1 little capsule for 1 coffee, if you buy a pack of let's say 24 then you can make 24 coffee, the normal coffee "sizes" are lungo 140-110ml, expresso 40-60ml and ristreto 25-30ml, I don't of any brand of coffee that makes capsules where you can make an starbuck size coffee, you will need to use coffee grounds and another type of coffee machine for that. There are some brands that say that you can fill it like 180ml but it will be watery as shit (you will need to use 2 capsules for that) These are however really big "If you have the option to choose a brew size, choose “Small Cup” (5.25 oz.), “Small Mug” (7.25 oz.), or “Large Mug” (9.25 oz.) based on the size of your cup or mug." 9.25oz = 275ml O.o I never knew something like these existed. I use nesspresso and dolce-gusto1 point
-
The size mostly determines how strong you want the coffee - the smaller the cup, the more concentrated the flavor ends up. Usually. Depends on the brand, as some have more grounds and some have less. Or you could be like me and buy a plastic reusable k-cup and buy your own coffee. If you make compost the used grounds make an excellent addition. Word of warning, if you buy fair trade or organic coffee you will never drink from a store-bought k cup again. Seriously. You find just how bitter store-bought stuff is when you get the expensive good stuff.1 point

They're actually required to throw it out and not read it. There have been massive legal problems, with people sending in scripts, then a movie maybe resembling the script coming out, and then the studio getting sued by the person who sent the script in, saying that they stole it. So no producer or movie maker in Hollywood will even look at your script, because it creates a liable mess, just by reading it. You'll get responses like this: http://imgur.com/a/2UPSs1 point

I'm unsure whether this will be helpful or not but I'd like to give my perspective on temporary bans as I'm a moderator on a very busy forum with over 50x the traffic of this one and a hell of a lot more mods than here. In short, a lot of people aren't intrinsically trolls and they fuck up and get carried away without knowing they're doing so until they get a temporary ban. This is usually 2 out of 3 people that we hand out bans to. Those people come back and basically never infringe upon the forum rules ever again and tread much more carefully. The rest, however, are just trolls and there's a variable length of time between them getting their first temporary ban and their final permanent ban. Basically the rate at which they graduate from one place to the next depends on their intrinsic troll nature. Some troll as soon as they return while most are calm for a while before losing it and falling back into their old habits. In short, the temporary bans make a massive difference to the overall signal to noise ratio on the forum and are a much more obvious flag to the unwitting perpetrators that they've overstepped the mark. Whether the balance is different on this forum or not I cannot tell but no doubt the same rules apply to some degree or other. Deleting/hiding posts tends to actually aggravate the latter group much faster and brings them to ban-worthy status quicker rather than teaching them they've overstepped the mark while the former group are less likely to elevate to ban status. Both bans and deletions are necessary evil components of maintaining the delicate balance between free(ish) speech and worthwhile contributions. One thing I am unsure of is whether members on this forum get notification if their posts are deleted/hidden/moved and the reasoning behind it. That often helps the member declare whether they're going to be a repeat offender or learn from their mistakes before needing a ban. Note I'm not passing judgement about the details of this argument, moderation accuracy or anyone's behaviour in particular that was discussed in this thread but simply pointing out what we've observed on another forum.1 point

I think sending your work to a big company, especially the Japanese ones would be like writing a movie script and send it to somebody in Hollywood thinking it will be the next big movie. Odds are that lots of loons does that and even if your script is good, it will drown in the stack nobody wants to read. Another important reason to not just send it is for all you know, they publish it like they did it themselves and then you could sue, but you have to proof that despite no releases or anything that you made it and they didn't even though they release VNs all the time. Tricky case to win is an understatement if you didn't do anything to protect your work. Sadly it happens from time to time with books and book publishers. I'm not actually sure what to do to protect yourself, but just sending the entire text without getting them to sign anything first is not the way to do it if you plan on getting money out of it. If your script is simple, you might be able to learn how to program it yourself. If you just use a simple subset of commands, like display text/dialogue, display choices and jump based on choice, then you can actually get quite far. If you add a placeholder png file for each background/sprite, then you could also insert those. Add bgm controls (possibly with placeholders as well) and you have a VN without the need for a programmer. Example of what it takes to start making a simple VN (from Ren'Py's quickstart guide) If you do it yourself, you should consider the engine carefully. It should be as easy to code as this example (if you do it yourself) and you should like how it will display the VN when you use it.1 point

Turnip Sensei reacted to Fred the Barber for a topic
I picked up VA-11 Hall-A earlier today and played through the first day so far. The prologue grabbed my attention right away, and the game is fun and engaging. There's gameplay elements, yes, but ultimately the game is basically just about reading character dialogue, so as Turnip said, it's enough of a VN for me. And I'm quite pleased to say that the writing does not suck, which is crucial given that the game is, well, pretty much just dialogue. The gorgeous pixel art and excellent soundtrack sure as hell aren't hurting my impression of the game, either.1 point -
RLVM, Anise, ViLE (already gave you link in previous messages), ONScripter (nScripter seems was open-source from beginning, but it is sort of evolution for modern machines). Probably I know more, just cannot remember right now. Another thing is that some VNs have plain text script (like Doddler remakes he made for MG or like C's Ware Eve Burst Error PC-98 Windows version), sort of what I made for Divi-Dead. /btw you can just press "Like this" button for each message was useful, you know.1 point

Does not look right Seems still quite a lot of work there, if you really want to implement it, to figure out what everything does. Sound files are in IMA ADPCM format I suppose (as this is the codec which game uses to play sounds), so I think you just need to decrypt them. I just wrote a simple script to extract the script. I was reading Divi-Dead last year (as forget almost completely all about it, last time I played was 15 years ago) and was very disappointed with absence of back log... I have to apologize for being unable to deliver on one of my promises... to be specific, it doesn't look like I'm going to have time to finish Seiken Tsukai no Proposition this week... although, I could already tell it wasn't going to be a solid VN of the Month candidate. Unusually, there were actually two solid candidates for May's victor... Sakura no Mori Dreamers and and Soshite Hatsukoi ga Imouto ni Naru. It really could have gone either way... both VNs are memorable and interesting, with solid stories and great characters... but in the end it was Soshite Hatsukoi ga Imouto ni Naru that won out. Why? There are a number of reasons... the biggest of which being the somewhat abrupt switches between the slice of life portions and the heavier plot portions in Sakura no Mori. It isn't a really startling problem, but it was still a bit awkward. Both stories were extremely emotional, but in the end, Hatsuimouto was just better technically. Edit: I really, really wish my bosses would stop dumping extra work on me... every time I think I'm done I check my email and find more for me to do.1 point

What is your opinion on cheating?
Nandemonai reacted to Darklord Rooke for a topic
With multiplayer games, instead of "cheating" I employ "strategy". For example, when seated next to a person beating me convincingly, I would yank his controller cord out of the console. The lengthy 'WHAT THE FUCK' and his subsequent scrambling granted me plenty of time to rack up an advantage. A little bit harder to do now that wireless controllers have become a thing, but a hearty overhead chop should be enough to make him drop his controller, granting you a few precious seconds to do what you will. ... ‘Strategy’ :3 Note: Shielding your controller and your person against retaliatory strikes is a must.1 point -

If it's a single player game then do what you want. If cheating somehow makes the game more enjoyable for you then knock yourself out. Multiplayer is a different story though, especially when it comes to competitive games. When it comes to online multiplayer I think devs should have a zero tolerance policy and perma ban on first offense.1 point -

If you're just playing the game solo at home I could care less if you use GOD MODE or whatever else. It's just you and the CPU, and the CPU has no feelings.
