We just hit 50% translation! Yaay! I just wrapped up the translation of Futaba's good ending last night, (fought through some H-scenes... ) And here we are! So with this, we are officially halfway there. It's a pretty good feeling. Although the actual line count hasn't changed that much since last week, just seeing the "50%" makes me feel awesome I wanted to do something a bit special for the halfway mark, so I'm going to talk a bit about the game first, then I'll be answering some random questions some people might have/ just in general talk a bit about the project and how things are progressing on our end. Let's begin with some info about the game: Many people might not really know that much about this small, fairly new yurige by a fairly unknown company. In Tsui Yuri, you follow the twin sisters Futaba and Ichika, who get along very well. So well in fact, that their mother thinks it is a bit too much, and she asks them to spend some time apart. Seeing as they live in the same house, go to the same school and pretty much always do everything together, this is a bit hard, and their relationship is strained. The story is told from both girls' perspectives, and there is 2 routes, with 4 endings total. During the common route, you will make several choices that will impact the story and the girls' relationship. The "status" meter in game will show you how strongly each character cares for the other at any given time, and each choice will change this meter to a varying degree. One choice might bump Ichika's feelings a lot, where as some might make her care less and less for Futaba, and so on. Currently not translated, as the image editing is not done by me. It is in the works, but not done yet. What really interested me about this game was the choice and route system. There is no real set combination of choices that will lead to a route; you can freely play with the status meter, making different choices to see how it changes their feelings. To get a character's route, that character's feelings has to be stronger than the other one. (Meaning if Futaba has about 60% and Ichika has 40%, you enter Futaba's route.) But, if you manage to completely push it all the way to one side, (so now Ichika doesn't care about Futaba at all,) then you will get a bad ending. Meaning, which ending you get is decided by your choices in the common route, and not during the actual character route itself. This is really cool, because that means you actually get a "bad route" and not just a bad ending. (The line count in the bad routes are actually just a tiny bit shorter than the good ones. If you like bad endings with a bit of meat to them, these are actually pretty good. Also, yandere fans, look out.) In addition, some of the choices you make in the common route will give you different variations of each scene, some which includes unique CGs, so saving and testing out new stuff is actually pretty much required. (Though, seeing as the game is quite short, it's a neat feature, not something that makes you sigh because you have read something similar before.) Story wise, it is a very light game with no real "plot" other than two sisters growing more and more fond of each other. It deals with them moving from the line of "sisters" to "lovers" and things like that. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but for yuri fans it's a really solid title. Also, like I mentioned, the bad endings are actually pretty dark, so for the twisted fellas out there, this one might be a bit interesting for you if you can stomach some adorableness first. Let us take a quick look at the characters: Ichika Ichika is the smart, cool and collected sister. She speaks politely, has a very calm air to her, is a perfect honor student and is also the vice-president on the student council. She is a bit too soft on Futaba, always helping her out with anything Futaba needs. Although she is very smart, she isn't the brightest when it comes to relationships in general - she simply isn't that used to interacting with people. Futaba (God I love her pout.) Futaba is the energy bomb of the two. She loves Ichika more than anything in the world, and always follows her sister around. She is way too spoiled, and doesn't do much on her own; she wants her sister to help her out with it. She isn't the smartest kid around, but she is very good at sports, and is a member of the tennis club. She is also way too adorable. Yuri The sisters' childhood friend and Ichika's classmate. Yuri is a bit of a joker who tends to put ideas in the girls' heads. She speaks her mind, even if what she has to say isn't the most appropriate, which makes for some hilarious situations. But although she tends to joke around a lot, she has a bit of an adult-like feel to her and is a very mature person when she needs to be. Saki The sisters' second childhood friend and Futaba's classmate. She is a bit different from Yuri, and is a lot more polite and in many ways, similar to Ichika. Saki is a very gentle and sweet person, and wants to help the sisters out whenever they are feeling down. One big difference between Ichika and Saki is that Saki gets what people are thinking a lot easier, making her a bit less of an "airhead" when it comes to relationships and people's feelings. Moving over to some questions and answers. Question... (kind of): When I started the project, I felt that there was a few people who weren't quite sure whether or not I could do this. I think the quality of the final translation was their main concern. Basically, am I a complete scrub, or do I actually have some skills? Answer: Well, a few things to keep in mind. 1, this game is very fluffy and very simple. It is also quite short. That does not mean it's something to underestimate of course, but I would never have started the project if I wasn't ready. There is a reason I aimed for a short, fluffy title without any intricate plot lines that would be hard to follow for a new translator. In addition, the second I felt a bit overwhelmed, I stopped the project for a bit, as I knew that wasn't the way things should be. I am completely comfortable with this project now, and although I know my translation will not be a top tier piece of work, I can assure you at the very least, it won't be wrong. Like, I won't translate peppers to peas. (Isn't that right Kriririri ) Anyways, I know I am new to this, I know I will make some tiny mistakes here and there, I know the quality will be a bit lower than what some of the very skilled individuals out there manages, but overall I am happy with the way things are going. I'm learning a lot, I'm improving, and this is just the beginning of my translation career. (Even if that makes some people more angry than happy ) Question: Will there be a prologue patch/ partial patch released? Answer: We still have a few issues with the engine, (which is stupid and retarded,) so a potential patch now would have a few annoying bugs and errors which would just be distracting. The scripts also aren't really polished quite yet, as it's only been me and an editor working on it as of right now so... I'm going to say, no. It just wouldn't be a pleasant read in its current state, and seeing as the game is so short, it's pretty much pointless either way. Question: Do you have an ETA for the patch? Answer: It's hard to say. I could give you a rough estimate, but I would rather not. The thing is, the amount of time I have to work on this is a bit limited. I absolutely love working on it, and I have a blast the entire time I do, (except for when the damn H-scenes suck the life out of me.) The thing is, this is my first translation. I have never translated anything before, and the work is very tasking. Sounds silly, I mean, all I do is look at something in Japanese, then write it in English, right? Well, there is a lot more to it, and honestly, it's very mentally draining. Even just a simple one hour session can leave me exhausted. Not because I get bored, but simply because I have to think a lot, and I'm not used to that. Wait... Because of the fairly limited amount of time I have each week, there is only so much I can get done on a weekly basis without overworking myself. This is a very new thing to me, and I want to make sure I move forward at a comfortable pace. Seeing as I have no deadline or anything, I can take it exactly at the pace I personally feel is right, even though that might be a bit frustrating to others. Basically, I can say that it will be released in 2016 for sure, but I can't say anything more specific than that. A bit of progress on how things are going on our end. The translation and editing is going fine, and is moving around the same speed. The reason the editing is lagging a tiny bit behind me right now, is because the translation I work on every week isn't made available on the GIT for the editor until I upload it on Thursday nights. That means he literally has to edit it all during that night to get it ready for the Friday update, which ... well, if he was doing that I'd be a bit worried. We have met a few problems in the game which the hacker has to take a look at. This is something I can't do anything about, as I barely know what a computer is, so without Porygon on this project, this whole thing would not have been possible. (Thank you so much.) Image editing will be done so that the entire menu and UI is in English. There is no ETA on this, and all I can say is that it will be done at some point. An individual approached me without me asking for their help, which made me extremely happy. As of right now, I don't know if they want to be mentioned or not, so I'll wait until I know that for sure before I talk about that any more. Point is, it will be done at some point. To finish up this post, I'll just put out there that we are working hard and that the patch will be finished. I know a decent amount of new teams tend to suddenly just die out and vanish. That will not be the case with this project. Like I said before, I'm having a blast translating this. Although it might not seem like I'm getting a lot done, it's simply because I'm making sure I don't rush through things. Also keep in mind that real life is a thing, and that sometimes it takes priority over the translation. Thanks for sticking with me and the team, and I hope you are looking forward to the patch. See you in next week's update.4 points

Umineko When They Cry - Question Arcs
DharmaFreedom and 2 others reacted to Decay for a topic
Higurashi really isn't necessary at all. I wouldn't say it's "much better" having read it, because as said it's just a few minor references. Just little "Oh, that's neat" things. Chapters 1-4 are approximately 50 hours in length, and then there's another 50 hours in chapters 5-8. Indeed, you would know all the answers! So, they CAN'T use the PS3 sprites, backgrounds, and voices. Alchemist owns those, not 07th expansion. And that means they need to engage in separate licensing agreements in order to utilize them. However, it seems that Alchemist is either unwilling or asking for too much. MangaGamer actually licensed a different set of alternate art from a pachinko game to avoid having R07 art, but that's only the sprites, not backgrounds. The good news? Fans always mod this stuff in pretty quickly. You can expect a fan patch that gives it all the PS3 art and voices. However, this is still an inferior experience to the PS3 port that russian team has been building. The downside to that one is that you need to own both the PS3 version and the Japanese PC version to actually use it. As for the release timings, Higurashi was released one chapter at a time because it was retranslated from scratch, one chapter at a time. Umineko is released four at a time because there was no retranslation, and instead they just gave it a much quicker editing and TLC pass. Releasing it in chapters didn't seem to make sense to them since they'd be churning through them so quickly, so they're just doing it in two big batches instead of eight. edit: Also you should note that the video you linked is of a super dated way of playing the game. You should see what the thing looks like with the proper PS3 port, in all its 1080p glory, chock full of special effects.3 points -

Eh? They're still using original backgrounds when they could use the PS3 ones or whatever, and no voice? Doesn't seem like a very good decision to basically release an inferior version. :/ Also they release Higurashi 1 episode at a time, and Umineko 4 at a time? So many questions... I'd probably know the answers if I'd at all followed what Mangagamer does, but alas ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyway, to answer your questions that seems to be precisely that same VN, with https://vndb.org/v2153 being the other 4 chapters. And IMO it's much better if you read Higurashi first, because otherwise there are a few minor references you won't pick up on and spoilers you might notice, but if you don't want to read Higurashi for whatever reason, Umineko stands on its own just fine.2 points

That question contains the very essence of what editing is about. Not just about 〜, but in general. It goes for everything. Perhaps a bit more precise: "how would this line be written if it was originally written from scratch by a native English speaker and not based on a translation?". Reading the bullet lines I conclude it's one of those signs/words I don't like. The issue is that the meaning depends on context and sometimes the context doesn't provide the answer. This mean two people can read the same text and they end up not having read the same contents. Text should be clear and strait forward to deliver the meaning. Sure a VN could be intentionally vague to postpone revealing what really goes on until later, but that's not what I'm talking about here. It's about wanting to be clear and then write it in a way where people can read it in multiple ways. Considering that 〜 comes with such an issue, it can only be too slow to get rid of it and replaced with something, which can't be read in multiple ways.2 points

When you are promoting your game with a terrible English, you need to understand what are you doing. Because not only the text in game should be good, then all promo-materials (including web-sites, fliers etc.) too. It's a PR, oh my gosh. Why do they think they can thus save on advertising? A good chunk of Liar-Soft which previously worked on Forest, was employed on FTR as well - mainly Ryuuko Ooishi (art) and Takao Tozan (writing); hence the similiarities. Unfortunately, what makes Forest so unique is Meteor's writing and it's the part FairyTale Requirem clearly lacks (not saying it's bad, just different). Depending on that, I'd either advise to continue your adventure with Liar-Soft games, or grab anything written by Meteor afterwards. Albeit Hikaru Sakurai wasn't directly involved with Forest, that game is a sort of a spiritual prequel (along with Seven-Bridge), to whole WAB series. That said, read Inganock. You won't regret it.1 point

Help critique Prefundia before it launches
Suzu Fanatic reacted to Black Sands Entertainment for a topic
Good day. I have been very active in the community and I am finally making my final push before my kickstarter in September. I will be launching my Prefundia in August and we are grinding like crazy to make it the best it can possibly be. Please comment on this very early version of what we plan to put out. We will be putting up hard numbers later this month and tiers. Genre:Adventure, Investigative, Management, and psychological Visual Novel Platforms:PC, Mac, Linux, PS4 Languages:English (Fully Voiced), English (Text) Visual Style: DreamWorks style graphics mixed with dark and mythological themes. Progress:~20% of the game completed. (20 hour game) Estimated release:~Summer 2017 “Whether friend or tyrant, I will become a King!" Welcome to the Rift, a dimensional tear located in Canaan where the ancient gods were created and where you must prove your worthiness to lead the world of men. You have allies and the training needed to fight, but nothing will prepare you for the wonders and horrors of the unstable plains in the Rift. Manage Respect, Relationships, and Mental will when making decisions. Assigning team members to missions best suited for them. Discovering weaknesses to epic enemies through investigations. Collecting real world lore and in game lore by discovering hidden items. Unlocking secrets of the past by collecting memory gems. Making timed decisions and avoiding damage in high intensity situations. Leveling up your characters to specialize in unique skills. Time In the game, everything will cost time to complete and characters may be away, unable to do a task available. Time is managed by the player and he has 6 months to prepare to face Nun. Special events will happen at certain times such as full moon cycles, changing of season, etc. This will give the player a level of management that makes them feel immersed. Leveling Each character has core stats which helps them succeed in feats. Completing certain missions and training will gain you very limited talent points to specialize your character in lore friendly ways. Respect You are a leader. You must earn the respect of your soldiers! Decisions you make and the success of those decisions will affect the confidence your allies have in you. If you fail a lot, they will lose confidence and go rogue during critical decisions. You may even lose command. A true Pharaoh never loses command… Kinship While how successful you are in decision making and your sense in the field affects the way they see you, it does not help one bit on how they think of you as a person. In order to get on their good side, you must appeal to their innate personalities. One cannot please everyone so make your choices wisely. It is worth noting that Kinship affects how allies act when not around you or when not commanded. Stability You are the strongest. Unfortunately, you are also the most flawed… You have an issue with Dementia and you must suppress these voices throughout your time in the Rift. The tradeoff is considerable though because when you were young, and you let the voices run wild, you could do things others could only dream of. In these dark days, will you allow your mind to slip in order to wield more power or will you avoid such pleasures and rely on knowledge of self? The rift has stood for thousands of years, since the day Nun arrived from the planet Nibiru. Located in the barren lands of Canaan, this void was created to keep the outside world uncontaminated while Nun worked on his creations. He spent centuries studying the humans and when he figured out this world, he created ancients similar to the life found on his home planet. They warred with each other inside the Rift until only 3 families remained. When they left the Rift, Nun used a stability gem to alter reality and hide the incomprehensible damage done. But now, thousands of years since the great sundering, Nun has created another race of beings to combat his creations from ions past. In order for them to prove themselves, they must survive the Rift, as it were during the time of the ancients. Stability is no more! Can the mortals survive the Trials of the Rift? There are many different types of quests in Black Sands. We will briefly go through some of them to better understand the gameplay mechanics involved in each. In Black Sands, time, health, and deployment all work against you as you stride to prepare yourself for the final battle with Nun. Scouting - designed to seek new quests exclusively. Minimal danger Investigation - A quest that requires discipline and perception. Player must decipher material and decide what is important and not. Proper investigation rewards secrets. Tracking - This is an extremely heavy skill check category that requires quick decision making and a little luck. These missions are available only once before they go back into the quest pool. Social - This is a quest where you develop relationships with the other characters and learn more about them. Instant Events - Automatically happen when certain criteria are met. May have nothing to do with prior tasks. Group Events - The entire group must participate. Nun will go over your notes and inspect your facility whenever this happens. Epic Events - Storyline Events that are either triggered by actions or chose by the player. These tend to have more decision making then other events. Exploration - A quest designed to explore unknown locations. These quests have no prior knowledge so player must use their wits to move forward. The farther you get, the better the rewards. These missions can be ended at any time but there is no guarantee you can return. This game is directly inspired by Dragon Age and Telltale. Their strong narratives and crucial game changing decisions inspired me to design a visual novel unlike any before it. Additional motivation was found in the way Hollywood depicts middle eastern and Saharan people. We do a lot of research and use annotations in game to teach the actual history behind the fantasy of our world. Future We will be converting all sprites to Live2d and making them look a bit more realistic and 20x more brutal. The goal is to make this like Conan while having the art leveling of pixar, dreamworks. How can I help? Follow us on facebook, Cosplay our characters, Share the hell out of this, and Pay homage to the gods by buying some of our merchandise. Don’t forget to sign up for the newsletter and remember, Nun sees all. We have these posters and more. You can support us while getting something tangible that will uplift both you and your families. Baldry Sky 18+ version poll on Sekai Project forums
ChaosRaven reacted to Nosebleed for a topic
Sure, 2 parties are involved in a contract, but the devs are the ones that own the rights to the game and all of its content, so it's not unreasonable to think they're the ones making decisions like "no announcing 18+ content until we say it's ok". It's their game after all. Saying Sekai Project decides to just shaft 18+ material is pretty ignorant imo. It doesn't make any sense for them to purposefully do that when it's such an important thing for most of the community. I'm not saying I know all the facts, I obviously don't, and I'm ALSO not saying "hey we should push the blame somewhere else", what I am saying is that we should stop whining and direct our efforts into something productive instead of pure anger at either Sekai Project OR the developers. Because dovac has already explictly told everybody they can't say anything at the time, you can conclude 2 things: Dovac is more than aware fans want an 18+ version of the game He is unable to let you in on any extra info but has promised to disclose it when an appropriate time comes Hearing this, the conclusion I reached is that all I can do at the moment is wait, because I'm pretty sure Sekai Project is already doing what they can to negotiate an 18+ version of the game. And if they're not, the most I'll do is just say something "hey it'd be nice if we could have this" on their page, not raise my pitchfork and alienate any form of discussion.1 point -

I am obviously very hyped for this, but Koiken Otome takes priority right now, so I'll wait until I have finished that. New yuri releases are always great to see though. I was so surprised when this translation came out of nowhere. Three cheers for yuri!1 point -

I finished Toradora, and even though I loved most of it, It had quite possibly the least satisfying ending I've ever seen in anything.1 point -

Baldr Sky is a high-caliber action game/visual novel hybrid and GIGA's finest work, but eroge fans must unite if they want to see an uncut release. because its fun and I love learning stuff as a hobby, to be honest, I would never have carried on with it if I didnt enjoy doing it in my freetime. Im also in the happy situation that I do creative things for a living and VNs are really helping me get the creativity going for some reason. I can only speak for myself though,1 point

Behold, the ULTIMATE question: Inside or Outside?
Hanny reacted to CeruleanGamer for a topic
So you have played your first visual novel game and finally arrived at the greatest moment in it: the h-scene. You have been faced with a difficult decision that will affect humanity.... in a way. The heroine is awaiting your decision, her eyes gleaming with excitement as she knows you are about to unleash your white minions. You are at your limit and you have to make this decision in the next 5 seconds or suffer the consequences... The question is where? You as a protagonist have a mission or missions (if you reload that save anyway): To be a responsible adult and not create an unnecessary life by pulling out your hyper weapon at the opportune moment because apparently it is the greatest contraception method in the visual novel world and then spray her like a busted fire hydrant OR Satisfy her fully: figuratively and literally by providing your love, warmth, and DNA even if she says "It's a safe day;" you don't believe in safe days or you are just too lazy or exhausted to pull out, so you remain inside. If you chose outside, despite covering the precious heroine with your essence and creating chaos made of white fluids all over the place, cleaning the whole place, even if it's the classroom, the rooftop, the library, the balcony or the church will be no problem, and you and the heroine will somehow manage to cleanse all the foul odors and pigments and smile at each other as if you've just robbed a bank without anyone noticing. Apparently you can use sorcery to block people's sense of smell so you and the heroine can totally walk around crowded streets without any suspicion. People who support the Way of the Outside are Ninja-class by default. If you chose inside, the heroine can never be become an expectant mother unless The P.L.O.T. demands it. The P.L.O.T. is more powerful than Jesus Himself. It can make babies appear or not appear with the heroine or the protagonist's will alone, so the protagonist can keep releasing inside 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 times without any problems. People may consider it "convenience", but I believe this is more of a miracle. "Inside" protagonists are also environment friendly, making sure the "predicament" can easily be wiped off with a single tissue as opposed to the wasteful "Outsiders" who require a dozen of them. People who follow the Way of the Inside are Hikikomori-class by default because they truly acknowledge that the inside is paradise and anything outside is corrupt, repulsive, and unacceptable. So once again, the ultimate question: inside or outside?1 point -
Hah! That's just the kind of answer I'd normally expect from you "normal" people. "Complete trash"? It seems that you just can't appreciate the rarity of a good porn that satisfies the darkest desires of mankind. Really, compared to most nukiges? Those are cream of the crop, considering the effective way they executed the rape scenes with a simple and straightforward method - break the haughty bitch who dared bad-mouthed you. Most importantly, "My Sex Slave is a Classmate" gave you the freedom of choice to choose the girl you want to rape and how you want to do it. That kind of interactivity isn't commonly found among most English-translated rape nukiges, because people have such little appreciation for such good stuff. It's really fun, actually, so quit being a prude. I mean, most nukiges have the girls doing what? Break down in less time than you can jack off. Bo-ring. What's so fun about a useless slut who mind breaks so fast? There's no sport. The whole idea of "rape" is power, not sex. That's why games like euphoria that focused so much on the complexities of sex rather than the simple domination of strong women are really just over-compensation. Both Captive Market and My Sex Slave is a Classmate get that, and carried out this simple idea beautifully. It's like a video game writer trying to actually write a good storyline for a video game. I mean, a video game with a s***ty storyline? Yeah, no s*** Sherlock! Stories in video games are accessories, not the main course. That's why people who complain that Destiny has a s***ty storyline has s*** for brains. The same with rape porn. The sex is extra; the power is the main course. The method of humiliation, the stripping of power, now that's much better than trying to figure out how to have the girl lay some chicken eggs or some weird kink like that. Edit: Check out the exchange between me and this guy at vndb, where we talked about the qualities of a good rape porn, and what made euphoria a bad one. http://vndb.org/t2180 Now tyr, that guy? He gets it. Edit 2: Here's a quote from tyr: This is such a fundamental truth many writers don't know about: If a girl gives in to the corruption, she instantly gets boring and should be disposed like the trash she became. Only a few heroines stay interesting even after the corruption process. Those are the really beautiful girls you keep as your slaves. This is elementary! This is one of the reasons why I'm sick of eroge heroines always loving the main character without reason. Girls without self respect are not worth your effort in corrupting them.1 point
