That was pretty interesting review. I liked the extended "good, bad and the ugly" section, definitely keep that. It was entertaining, but also informative. Bonus points for talking about the negative parts honestly and from personal perspective. The beginning managed to convince the reader that the game is actually good, but only going talking about the flaws in such detail creates a good overall view of the game. Especially when the good parts were discussed side by side with not so good parts There were some parts that could be considered spoilers, so you could be slightly more careful with those. Nothing major, but could be annoying to some people. Writing was good, no complaints about that. It was easy to read and it flowed naturally. The apostrophes and quotation marks were kind of weird, but that is just a small formatting problem. It's nice too see some love for vita VNs. I'm personally interested in those but getting info or well thought opinions is not so easy, so I hope to see more of these reviews. Good work!

I had really hard time choosing the best girl, because while they are great characters most of them are horrible persons, yet still very humane. So there is the struggle of hating the characters on a emotional level (watching it again lessened my hate for them though) and appreciating them in the context on the story. -

How do you read VNs (Stolen from reddit)
Turnip Sensei replied to solidbatman's topic in Visual Novel Talk
On desktop with headphones, but my sitting habits are all over the place. Sometimes I sit with legs resting on my drawers to the side, sometimes hugging my knees and so on. I like to change my position a lot, so I have sat in a every imaginable way on my chair. Oh, and I always make me myself cup of tea when I start reading something. -
All these DanMachi Hestia fans... I dropped the show on 3rd episode because I got fed up with all the stupidity going on. Anyways my must watch shows are Hibike! and Arslan Senki. Hibike feels just so down to earth and charming. It also has really great characters. Arslan is just awesome and gritty medieval anime. It has good action and the medieval politics and issues are interesting.

I remember reading the LN few years ago. It didn't leave that good impression on me, but at least the Swedish lessons I spent reading date a live were way more enjoyable than normal. I can hardly remember anything about it though.

How Can Visual Novel Players Expose Newcomers to the Genre?
Turnip Sensei replied to OriginalRen's topic in Visual Novel Talk
That differs so much from person to person, but generally something with really strong impact. Usually those strong impacts became to most memorable parts of your experience, it doesn't really matter what the actual emotion in question was. Many newcomers are probably expecting romance from VNs, so something really romantic and heartwarming should work. Bittersweet emotions could work as well. The combination of positive and negative emotions creates really strong impressions. I would make them play something different from the one they played to show that there are all kinds of VNs. One way could be making them play something really impressive and well written like Type-Moon stuff, even if that wasn't something I would have recommended initially. -
I mostly use walkthroughs after completing one route, and if the choices are unpredictable or the overall structure is complicated like in Kagetsu Tooya. But usually I feel bad about using quides as it breaks my immersion, so I try to use them as little as possible.

How Can Visual Novel Players Expose Newcomers to the Genre?
Turnip Sensei replied to OriginalRen's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Recommending stuff for newcomers is not easy because it depends on so much what the person in question likes and can tolerate. Some people are fine running in to H-scenes and stuff, but not everybody. And it's always better to make them read something that interest them. But the stuff I could recommend to every VN newcomer would be Steins;Gate, and zero escape games if they happen to like games. They both have great and intense story, which will surely leave a strong impression and thus make them crave for more. Or so I hope. Comedy is always good thing to have, but it's not necessary depending on the experience the newcomer is seeking. Emotional situations on the other hand are really important, if you manage to make the newcomer care about the story so much that it manages to affect the newcomer emotionally, it's already a win. Steam would be good place to introduce people VNs trough all-ages games, but sadly it's not there yet. It lacks major VNs that could work as a killer app, and the steam community surrounding VNs is also pretty awful The bashing of all-ages versions and "censorism" makes it really hard to judge what is actually good and not. If the VN strikes the newcomers interest and is actually good, I wouldn't care about being OELVN or not. But I still would rather recommend translated one, since there are differences in style and content. -
What Video Games Are You Playing Right Now?
Turnip Sensei replied to solidbatman's topic in Gaming Talk
Classic Pc games and their random technical issues. Speaking of technical issues I played some Stalker: Call of Pripyat with Misery mod today, game that loads for five minutes when you start it and crashes randomly. Stalker games are my go to games when I'm not sure what to do. It's so Zen running around in the desolate Zone, walking into anomalies and having face to face encounters with mutants. They are also the kinds of games that create their own stories, thanks to random mutant spawns and enemy patrol routes. Today I ran into two pseudo-giants (strongest mutant in the game) in a bunker which already contains dwarf with telekinetic powers. I spent half an hour trying to run past them, it was super tense. -
I finally got around watching the Unlimited Budget Works season 1. I was still reading F/SN when it came out and I wanted to wait for BDs anyway, that's why I'm so late for the party. But man it's awesome, the battle scenes especially. I thought it would be on the same level as F/Z, but wasn't expecting it to be even better. The double sized first two episodes really got the show going.

Otome games and the difference in emotional involvement
Turnip Sensei replied to Turnip Sensei's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Those problems started to bug me a little after playing few routes especially the heroine doing nothing. But mostly I was just thrilled from getting so engaged, being the actual quality whatever. It has been a while since I read something really engaging and I was happy to found out that such simple thing could do it. I have no doubt that after reading more otome games and VNs in general the impact will lessen, but the initial experience was great. -
Otome games and the difference in emotional involvement
Turnip Sensei replied to Turnip Sensei's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Self insertion is not really what I experience in visual novels, it's more like role-playing a existing character, as you are given person whose actions you can influence through the choices. The role-playing doesn't happen when the characters or story are strong enough. And when you can distance your own feelings from the story it usually becomes more enjoyable. It's better when story influence your feelings, rather than your feelings affecting the story. The best VNs I've read make you immersed in the story and characters as an observer, while some VNs you just go through because you happen to like the heroine. But otome games are kind of odd ball to me, since my feelings are mostly detached from the start. And that was really fascinating to me. I guess it's better to not relate too much with the main character in order to fully enjoy the story and otome games I played did just that for me. -
VN club was my favorite thing when first joined fuwa, so I'm super happy about the revival. Thanks for making this real again! I'm also really bad at making myself to read something, but club activity makes it fun.

Otome games and the difference in emotional involvement

Hakuoki is pretty awesome, it's the one that inspired the thread. The other I've played is Sweet Fuse, but it's not as good. I haven't played that many, so I want recommendations too. -
While I agree that some of the trolling threads and especially the follow up spam went way too far, I wouldn't say everything like that should be banned from the forums. Something is lost if you can't joke about sex anymore. But more consideration for others is never a bad thing. But as a newcomer I can say that Fuwa is pretty welcoming. I haven't seen any noob bashing and people are generally friendly and accepting. The intimidation factor on Visual Novel boards is pretty high though. I was afraid of posting because I felt like my opinions didn't matter and were inferior to the VN gurus' opinions. But feedback was really positive and encouraging, something I haven't seen elsewhere. My initial expression wasn't that Fuwa is full of elitist or sexist pigs, but open to all kinds of discussion. And I haven't seen any malicious joking. Tasteless sometimes, but not something that was meant to hurt or degrade others.

I just Finished Okita's route in Hakuoki. (Or reach one of the good endings)

I played few Otome games recently and noticed that I unconsciously had really different approach on them. 1. I didn't go into the story as focused on characters. In VNs with routes for different characters I just go for the girl that seems most interesting (and best looking, I admit) and pursue her, sometimes blindly. This had led me to some awkward experiences like Miyako's route in Majikoi. Because I couldn't do so in Otome games I picked the choices that seemed natural and let the game choose a character for me. This was something that I have rarely experienced while reading VNs, I can't deny that my attraction to some characters twists my decision making. Following playthroughs felt more like the normal, because I was pursuing the remaining characters consciously. 2. The way I felt about the protagonist was vastly different. I felt really protective towards the protagonist and wanted to see her through the story safely and happy. I wasn't actively trying to romance some character, which meant that emotional development that happened later felt better because I was looking it more objectively. It was more like feeling content watching from the sidelines when the protagonist finds happiness, rather than being happy as the protagonist. There's less personal involvement from my part which makes reading about the romance much more enjoyable. I've only played a few otome games, but I was surprised how differently I experienced them. So I wanted to know if others experience otome games differently from Galge and how?

Oh man Plastic Memories is really getting serious. There's some Psycho Pass vibes I'm sensing. I initially thought it would be just tear jerker about the limited lifetime of giftians, but it seems it's going for more broader and darker approach on human robots.
