http://testyourvocab.com/result?user=9563477 Guess I've been reading too much Japanese only the last decade.

Houseki no kuni was a real gem. Pun fully intended. It made me think 3d is finally coming of age when it looks so good. I think the mistake is mixing 3d with 2d where they just don't blend. Good all round 3d seems to be a very valid way forward. Having said that, it's never about technology but about implementation, and houseki no kuni is just a great original story done exceptionally well.

I felt obliged to like this post simply because it didn't abuse the use of the word 'your'. -
Agreed on the male VAs. Not sure I'll be bothered with any more though...
-
Yeah but interestingly I speak more of her inability to empathise with normal human emotions which appears to be intrinsic for her, not war induced, despite being human. A good romance ought to beat that out of her.
-
Can't imagine there'll be too many more war scenes except for the occasional flashback now for the rest of the story is bound to be focussed only on Violet's emotional rehabilitation.

Visual novels with emotionless heroines?

Ruuko in To Heart 2 then (my avatar) Ruu \o/ (You'll understand after playing her Ruute). -

Emotionless for the entire time or just kuudere which means they eventually break out some dere response? -
Yay finally accumulated enough like credits to like the rest of the informative posts.

Ryuuou no oshigoto, was that whole fanservice scene really necessary? It was an abysmal unfunny add on. Why must they do that?

No I don't think that belongs here -
Ah right sorry, yes they're bitmaps, not the video but still not text in the game so they'd have to be graphic edited. Looking through the extracted bitmaps, they only did that on Manaka's route for some reason. Perhaps they felt they didn't give enough of a postscript in the video for her because of Manaka's extra postscript:
-
I rewatched it to make sure and I only see 2 lines for Manaka's ED. The rest are game credits. EDIT Again: No I still only see 2 lines. The others I saw are in other girls' routes.
-
Maybe but then I'd need to redistribute the patch. I guess I could put it up on my site for those looking for it.
-
Nope, I checked the video, it's only 2 lines in the video and all other text is translated. Not sure how you expect me to translate what's in the video and show it in the game? The only option was to reencode the video and subtitle that component and while I toyed with that idea, I didn't bother in the end since distributing videos would make the patch much much bigger and be a much clearer copyright violation. As it is there is no copyright violation. On the whole all of these lines in each girls' closing video are repeated lines from the girls' routes; they don't add anything to the story.

One too many dimensions. -
And that now makes 8/10 of the most popular VNDB entries

Heh well as much as To Heart 2 means to me, and how many years work I put into it, I'm not blind enough to consider it the best VN of all time. On the other hand, for anyone that enjoys moege and charage, I put it to them that they should all play To Heart 2 at some stage because it is one of the reference works that basically defined the genre in one fell swoop. VNs before it were nothing like it in scope and tropes became tropes as a result of its writing. They weren't tropes when it was written. It has dated in many ways but there are also still very likeable aspects to its story and characters, and the amount of meta references to this game in the most modern of charage still today make it an invaluable reference for jokes. Playing it is reading history in the making. Even if you don't plan to read it, check out its and its animes' list of (spoilers) tropes http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VisualNovel/ToHeart2

It would seem I have run out of likes. I've wanted to like every useful post on this thread but alas I've used up my likes. We're still only at 7 out of 10 of the most popular on VNDB. I wonder if some of the top 10 have dated and people wouldn't see them that way any more?
-
I dunno as I haven't read it. If it ends up JUST being about that then I'll lose interest and switch off. I'm not uncomfortable with pretty much anything these days, but that doesn't mean they all excite me.
-
That's because it's part of the video and not actual in game text. All the routes have something similar. I'll take a look when time permits and get back to you.

The story so far of aired ones I even tried to watch: Toji no Miko: Generic kick arse girls with super abilities show and the occasional 3D animation to save time. Surprisingly it's reasonably entertaining despite being generic. The very good Houseki no kuni last season made me stop hating on 3D, but 3D mixed in with 2D (like this show) still looks out of place. Grancrest Senki: Another variation of a formula done to death, mage forming contracts, powering up their master, though somehow I found it entertaining and will continue watching. Pop Team Epic: Complete troll show, yet I had a chuckle or two so I'll at least watch one more episode and then probably abandon it. How on earth can you make the second half of a show exactly the same as the first half with just different voice overs? Sanrio Danshi: Bishounen show about boys that like cute things. So far surprisingly not too bad, but I doubt I'll make it to the end. Citrus: Uncomfortable relationship show but with interesting main heroine, see previous post; will keep watching. Slow Start: Cute girls doing cute things in high school. Very easy to watch and likely nothing will happen but will still be pleasant to watch. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho: Girls heading to Antarctica for dubious reasons, mildly entertaining so far, will continue. Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san: Food porn show about ramen and two girls. Luckily I love ramen so I'll keep watching. Yuru Camp: Sounds so close to Yuri camp that it's a put off, but it's about (drumroll, high school girls) camping which is very out of character for mainstream Japanese making it mildly interesting. Characters are cute and generic enough to be inoffensive. Mahoutsukai no Yome continued: Since it continues immediately after the first season it has the same qualities and is a very good watch. Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen: Sequel to the infamous Card Captor Sakura series, now in middle school. Wasn't long ago that I finished the original series and I watched the movies in preparation for this sequel. So far is very true to the feel of the original series but with much more modernised animation. Fortunately they did NOT backtrack on any of the story elements of the previous series. Looking forward to more. Other shows have also aired but got filtered before me even trying them...

It seems pretty decent so far. It's not pathetic filth material the way scum's wish was (which is what appealed to many and just annoyed the fuck out of me) but there are some uncomfortable elements. I do like the character but there are elements of her behaviour that feel a little forced like her exclamations and so on. Nonetheless I admit to having enjoyed watching the first episode and look forward to more if they can maintain that fine balance between uncomfortable relationships and interesting characters. So far the school president character is a bit 1 dimensional apart from her 'unexpected' behaviour. I suspect that will change. People all over the net are going mad over the heavy Yuri overtones in it but that's the least interesting thing to me... Getting excited by portrayal of something not done mainstream before is not reason enough to make something good. I also think the yuri element is a distraction rather than the point of the story, but we'll see. Either way it's remaining on my watch list for now.
