Okay, Sanah asked me to compile what I wrote in a private message (which aren't at all long, they're all just the right size) into a forum post. But to be honest I tried and I just don't have the strength to do it right now, so I'll just post my messages. Have fun everybody, it's a mess. I write a lot more loosely in PMs than I do on forum posts. Applying it back to the topic: Q1 - Is self-censorship actually censorship? A - Yes Q2 - Should self-censorship in gaming be opposed? A - No. It depends on context. Additional question - Is everything the community think is censorship always censorship? A - No. Care is needed here.

Fuwanovel tab using up to 30% of my CPU
Darklord Rooke replied to Nosebleed's topic in Request a Change/Report Site Problems
It's by far the best theme. Even better than that old Green theme thingy Fuwa used to use :3 -
TBH if I wanted an episodic VN for 10 bucks, my first inclination would be to skip over Corona Blossoms AND Supipara and get this instead: The screenshots by themselves generate a wonderfully visceral atmosphere, I can feel it coming off the screen, and the description emphasises their primary hook - choice and consequence.

A story about myself and 1000 posts AMA
Darklord Rooke replied to SilverLi's topic in Members' Lounge
Darn tootin' (brushing up on Yank slang). Sorry to hear about your misfortunes, much respect for your resilience. Congrats on your thousandth post Also I wouldn't worry too much about losing your match fitness, it happens to people all the time. I mean, you get injured, you need surgery, you're out for half a year to a season and BAM no match fitness. But it comes back, no worries. -
What Video Games Are You Playing Right Now?
Darklord Rooke replied to solidbatman's topic in Gaming Talk
Understanding all of the lore isn't necessary for the story. It's like LOTR, understanding all of the lore isn't necessary to read the story, but anyone who's curious can go buy Tolkien's other book(s). -
What Video Games Are You Playing Right Now?
Darklord Rooke replied to solidbatman's topic in Gaming Talk
Only 1 DLC in ME2 is REALLY relevant to the story, and even that isn't necessary. I played Mass Effect 3 without playing the story oriented DLCs from number 2. In fact I still haven't played them because they don't seem important or interesting to me nor do they seem to be great experiences. I was not confused. Storytelling isn't about showing every little thing which happened in a certain time frame, it's also not about letting the reader know every little thing that happened in a time frame. The events that happened were alluded to in sufficient detail in number 3, and anyone who's curious about what happened can go and play it. Well, I AM a very agreeable fella -
What Video Games Are You Playing Right Now?
Darklord Rooke replied to solidbatman's topic in Gaming Talk
The game is complete 'as-is', the DLC is just added flavour on the top. Some of them are okay, some of them are exceptional, none of them are needed. People really need to get over their 'DLC-hate'. -
Dies Irae Steam Confirmed (Prefundia Up Now)
Darklord Rooke replied to Yuuko's topic in Visual Novel Talk
It's a really good idea, TBH. The amount of hype Dies Irae has received, much of it because people like to parrot stuff other people say on 4chan, means it's impossible for Dies Irae to live up to community expectations. A lot of fiction contain 'philosophical' elements. Why? Because every person has their own thoughts, their own philosophy, their own reasoning that makes sense of the world. Much of the time even when the author doesn't realise it, that stuff gets inserted into their work. Sometimes this gets hyped up into more than it is. Like everything else, it's how it's done not it is there. -

[Copy & pasted from private chat - should have posted it here to begin with] Amusing thought for the morning: In the past, women may have tried to throw off gender trappings when they started turning away from blue (a very feminine colour) and embracing pink. Pink being a man's colour, I want to say it's because it resembles blood but it doesn't, was embraced enthusiastically by women at the beginning of the 20th Century. Fast forward to today and pink is a woman's colour, and women are trying to throw off gender trappings by ... Heh, the more things change the more they stay the same That being said it's hard on the eyes, 'too strong' you might say, which is a very masculine phenomenon. Therefore to keep with the very masculine theme for the day, can somebody please remind me to stab whoever came up with the 'pink for GMs Fab Friday' thing? Much appreciated -
Dies Irae Steam Confirmed (Prefundia Up Now)

I laughed for days reading the VN thread on /vg/ after Tokyo Babel was released. There's probably no VN community more ignorant than they right now. -

Pink used to be a masculine colour. This is because pink represented passion (or something) and was considered 'stronger', whereas blue was prettier and daintier and therefore was considered a girl's colour. Does this somehow make it less cool? Less trendy? Less edgy? :3 -
TIME: How Trolls Are Ruining the Internet

Heh, an angry hipster would probably write it more like this: Of course he later expanded his routine and took that joke to a fabulously hilarious and very true place. -
TIME: How Trolls Are Ruining the Internet
Darklord Rooke replied to sanahtlig's topic in General Discussion
I remember back when trolling related to the specific way people would control conversations and goad forum users into fiery arguments. In one sport forum I used to visit, we used to call the WUMs or 'wind-up merchants', which is a gentler term that means basically the same thing. Some trolls used to be quite fun and harmless. These days 'trolling' is any sort of negative behaviour on the internet, it's another prime example of how misusing a term creates confusion and vague imagery. It's gone from a rather precise and specific description of someone's behaviour to a vague catch-all (which are usually fairly useless.) Basically I can't take any sort of article about trolling seriously when they don't know what trolling is, it means any conclusions or arguments they make are suspect. Good find though https://www.engadget.com/2013/01/23/the-internet-used-to-be-better/ Can confirm, the internet was better in the 90s. IMO it's mostly due to reason number 1 - not everyone was on it ... no, this isn't nostalgia talking ... -
Not really like a VN. Persona 3 and 4 are dating sim/dungeon crawler hybrids. So a large part of the everyday sections of the game involve raising your stats to max your social links with people (you win if you get with them) and the RPG section is like a dungeon crawler (also know as the RPG sections concentrate on combat situations.) Don't really expect too much outside of that, even though both the dungeon crawling and the dating sim aspects can be fun. I think part of the reason it's hyped so much is that it's a fairly rare combination of genres. As for the story, it's not really the main strength of Persona 4 but it isn't terrible. The story in Persona 3 was stronger, the atmosphere was also more alive (and creepier.) Heh I didn't say it, that was all you The voice acting isn't that good, but I didn't really pay attention to it. I tend to read ahead, voice acting slows me down.

No, you're fairly spot on with your post. Japanese games don't put much emphasis on the 'choice and consequence' aspect of RPGs ... outside of bad ends (deeeeeeath) and 'not getting the girl/boy'. There's some flavour dialogue in there depending on which choice you pick, but it's not great. Not really worth it. Generally maxing your social links is the 'correct path'.

Complaints about moderation goes here
Darklord Rooke replied to Down's topic in Community Coordination and Feedback
Before this conversation gets out of hand, Rule 4 under ‘thread rules’ – ‘don’t double post repeatedly.’ The forum rules are on the Introduce Yourself forum. Sorry, but it's written very plainly for everybody to see Moderators may let a couple of instances go on their discretion, but they’ll sometimes morph 2 or more posts together. Maybe. If somebody bumps a thread from 6 years ago, a thread they last replied in, then that would be an example of something which be unreasonable to not create a double post. But in general it would get annoying for users if everybody broke this rule instead of making one post, it makes conversations a bit more chaotic. I sometimes do it to annoy the moderators. Anyway, anything you can do in 6 posts you can do in 1 post.
