  1. There's nothing wrong with the translation there, mate. In this instance I also prefer 'stupid' to 'idiot', but that's just my preference.
  2. Sounds like your classic 'self-insert' protagonist. They tend to lack personality so the greatest number of people can insert themselves into his shoes, but it makes for a fairly boring read, which hardly justifies the supposed advantages.
  3. Thanks, Decay. Hmmm, I might have to hunt down ROTK X :3
  4. Thanks for the info :3 I guess I'll give it a pass.
  5. Is it worth getting? I'm undecided whether it's worth it (haven't played any ROTK games.)
  6. Much of the VN fanbase doesn't like to read the news. A lack of moe and erotic content is a dealbreaker, apparently ...
  7. Not listening to voices is just the logical thing to do, @Eclipsed
  8. Some scams involve getting users to paste an evil piece of code into their console box. Samples of such scams can be found here: http://www.scamsurvivors.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17841 If you’re certain the code you’re using didn’t originate from some Machiavellian villain who has a thing for twirling moustaches, feel free to use it.
  9. In accordance with their ‘no update for you’ policy, the group has deprived the public of the update informing everyone of the group's intention not to release updates.
  10. Intriguingly, there's quite a few google results for 'grinny grin grin'. A great deal of heartache might have been saved by just using that xD
  11. A bunch of bored kids who need something productive to do.
  12. That's the first problem. If he sought to make a 'large sandbox' anything, he drastically underestimated how much content would be needed. Because of this, I'm unsurprised he later tried to split the game into two parts, and later gave up. The artist running off with money is a pretty common tale in VN indie development.
  13. They're not. They're language and culture dependent. My personal theory is that (heh) certain people are tone deaf and cannot accurately replicate sounds, and so without a certain amount of cultural familiarity you wouldn't know what the hell some of them mean. Take a rooster - 'Cockle doodle do' in the West and kokekokko in Japanese. Wan Wan vs bark bark for a dog. Kon for a fox vs ... whatever the hell it is in English. They are not instantly recognisable as animal sounds. So yes, it's perfectly normal to translate onomatopoeia, because many Japanese onomatopoeia would make no sense in English. Especially in cases where there is no English equivalent, like in (I assume) the above. And considering replicating sounds involves (on occasion) making up words, it's perfectly okay to translate them into 'made up' words. It's understandable that you're frustrated with the translation, the problem is that there isn't a Global language to translate stories into for everyone. There should be a bigger French translation community, so it can be translated into French also.
  14. It doesn't help when Goku is voiced by a relatively high-pitched lady
  15. Onomatopoeia are the written form of sound effects. Because they mimic what things sound like, they sometimes take the form of 'made up' words. "FWOOMP" is an onomatopoeia, yet you won't find it in any dictionary. "BAMF" is another one. Western comics used to be littered with them. It wasn't translated into 'Grinnity' because it 'sounded cool', it was translated into that because it kept the tone. Chronopolis is another Japanese speaker and thinks the tone is replicated to a decent extent, which means mission accomplished?
  16. Agree with this. I'm not a fan of Japanese VNs route structure, or that the consequences to your actions often feel like they're random.
  17. The site didn't blow up? You raised my expectations, and now ... I bought new post-apocalyptic clothing and everything to celebrate We all appreciate the hard work you and Nay have put into this. Looks awesome.
  18. Yeah, no steps for older people dude. Their joints stiffen up and they have trouble getting up or down. Should have turned it into a ramp or something. But they also make a habit of going off meds if they feel like a burden. My Grandmother died a while ago from kidney problems because she tried to make her medication last longer. Older people generally need more care. My neighbour growing up was a former farmer, fit as anything, until the day he wasn't fit as anything and could no longer look after himself. It was fine while his daughter was alive because she'd always visit and take care of him, because his son didn't really care. Once she died, he shipped him off to a home and rented out the house. It's very sad, but you need to take care of your grandparents.
  19. But 'backing up' is for chickens, Tay. Real men throw caution to the wind and live with the consequences. ... (*copy* *paste* *saved forever*)
  20. You miss the intention of that quote. Music is considered by some as an expression of the soul. If a musician alters who they are and their music in a way as to be inconsistent with their former beliefs then yes, they're a sell out. There was a well known female artist who changed from thoughtful and intellectual ballads to sing a generic pop song, it was incredibly successful and she was labelled a sell out. She stated it was for parody reasons ( I can't remember her name. Was it Faith? No ...) . That being said, there are plenty of musicians who alter their style to chase a wider audience that AREN'T considered sell outs. For example, musicians who were always chasing what was popular in the first place. That's why Wikipedia used non-absolute terms like 'may' or 'associated', because whether they're considered a sell out depends on the specifics of the case. Stick with the first sentence, it's the most accurate one there. This is definitely not considered a sell out. Betraying fans isn't selling out because fans could have held values completely inconsistent with the person in question. To call out someone for 'selling out' beliefs that person never held is, quite frankly, inane. There should be
  21. Of course. Was there any doubt? :3 Next person has a pocket watch. Bonus if they also have a monocle.
  22. Any translation Sekai uses they buy from the fan-translators, and the rumour is they pay them decently. Dovac recently tweeted he made a loss in one of his games because he insisted on paying the fan-translators a respectful amount of dough. Which in the VN industry is still pretty bad, but a lot better than translators used to get paid. New MangaGamer also pays translators quite well, although old MangaGamer couldn't afford to pay translators well at all. The wikipedia definition is different to your paraphrasing. A person sells out when they trade their personal ethics or morals for personal advancement. Fan translators however, on the whole, from what I can tell, historically tried to encourage their readers to purchase the original copy of the game. It's why so many of them are very willing to make deals with localisers, they WANT to support the original developers. If this was the case with Dovac, then I don't see how him launching a Localisation business is any evidence of 'selling out'. If you use the phrase as a buzzword to describe behaviour you don't agree with, you'll dilute the power of the phrase.
  23. Only if your dictionary is written by an illiterate with a font called 'stupid'.
  24. The translators themselves get paid, and the localisers do a lot of work negotiating and spend a fair amount of coin licensing the game to allow those translators to get paid. The translators are free to negotiate with the Japanese developers and buy the license themselves if they feel they can do better. That it was formerly released to the public for free really has nothing to do with anything. Unless you're the consumer and like getting things for free, but tough. EDIT: I suppose we're pretending for a moment people don't download it for free after it's been officially licensed, I suppose. Define "sell out".
  25. How else will you learn about current events? First person who says ‘social media’ gets a virtual kick in the danglies. Next person has an underground, nuclear fallout bunker complete with a 2 year supply of canned food. Half of it expired.
