Anyone use Twitter or other social media often?
Okarin replied to NowItsAngeTime's topic in Members' Lounge
I have a pretty active Facebook, it's personal and I publish in Spanish. And a Tumblr in English full of VN commentary: http://sanfter-flugel.tumblr.com/ Also some old blogs, when blogs were all the rage. But mostly discontinued or updated seldom. -
Attending my dad's funeral this afternoon
Okarin replied to InvertMouse's topic in General Discussion
In the Buddhist view, we get to this Earth in order to learn, heal and grow as people. Also, there are no coincidences, only choices (but maybe I'm making that one up). So, if it helps you, maybe the loss of your father now has some meaning, in order for you to grow more as a person, spiritually and mentally. Anyway, I'm full on the "think what puts you at ease" team. For example, a friend (though I haven't talked much to her, she's more like an acquaintance) lost her mother last year to cancer. When I last saw my friend, she had lost quite some weight. She had a pretty tolling experience, but note how even good can come from bad: she had a strong determination to help people, to honour her mother she was planning to work as a nurse in order to help people in a similar situation. This is a way (if harsh) to learn some compassion for your fellow people. Now this is a real Buddha's teaching: everything changes, nothing stays the same, and these are very transforming experiences, hopefully to make you a better person. -
Same here, I have more than enough with the regular Rewrite. Key hitting the mobile industry, hmmmmm. Will it be a "Rewrite Run"?

Key announced their new title - Summer Pockets
Okarin replied to Satsuki's topic in Visual Novel Talk
There's considerable variety for each person to pick what he/she likes most. Another thing is that with Summer Pockets they'll have to deal with Key fans' expectations. But, as we have seen with Rewrite and Charlotte, Key can't remain always the same Key. Key making an utsuge can be a refreshing change, even if it pisses some people off (i. e. maybe there are people so keen on the nakige formula they can't stomach a heavy hitting ending, a la Narcissu). As for me, I feel that an utsuge needs a special mindset to tackle, and should be played with some caution. Because, damn, it can get very depressing. And I mean VERY. -

Yeah, but the ending being good or bad depends on the general mood and motif of the novel. Hoshimemo's endings are happy, because the routes consist of the protag romancing your girl of choice and moving on from his past. I still have to try Yume and Mare though. But it's not a game where a tragic ending could fit. -

"Look upon endings as new beginnings." --The Tao of Shinsei. You are now facing the greatest challenge in anybody's life, the loss of a loved one. There's just no room for consolation -you need to get on your feet yourself and rationalise your experience. Unless things go horribly awry, you'll move on. And possibly, be strengthened by it, as you suggest. Just know that this world is full of possibilities. Give yourself some time to rebuild. People die, nations are destroyed all the time, tsunamis and catastrophes happen, but we stubborn humans get up again. Every time. Don't forget that people die so that others may live. -
Some great novels story-wise: - Virtue's Last Reward (Zero Escape): it blew my mind back in 2014. - Ever 17: pretty epic tale. - Steins;Gate: same as Ever 17, but with better characters. - If my heart had wings: romance novel with mutilated H scenes and then some, it will receive a new, complete retranslation within some months, and it will be great. - Hoshizora no Memoria: humour, drama, romance and feelz, all in one nice package. Standard approach albeit with high quality. All are available in English, VLR will release on Steam sometime 2017 along with the first game, 999. Another potential recommendations: - Ace Attorney games, the last one, set in an Eastern rundown nation, can be pretty great. - Danganronpa, don't know if you will like it. - Doctor Layton games. Puzzles, mystery and whatnot. These are available on handheld systems (PS Vita/3DS).

Euphoria. Torture game of sorts, hit-or-miss H scenes, and dark, dark plot with more than one surprise, and a route is pretty effing bananas.

Whirlpool Also Targeting Western Market (Nekonin Steam page up)

Know little and less about Whirlpool, but this is always great news. Bought Harmonia and probably will keep buying this kind of release (if the TL is any good, no more Konosoras plz). -

So, in short, utsuge we go. Also: Keyfag Army! Heave-ho! -

It's not utsuge, but if pursued further and removing the happy notes, it can be. -

I don't. Some Key routes were utsuge enough, like Haruka Saigusa, but ended on a happy note. -

In truth, a single pic isn't anything to go by. We don't even know if it's a pure nakige, or some "midtempo" work like Key's latter ones (Angel Beats, Charlotte). But, if you like Key's games, it's certainly good news. -

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. If I had to bet, I'd say that the white-haired girl in the teaser isn't Tenshi. Unless she escaped to some summerside town with Otonashi. But we already know those two are lovebirds, it would be a pointless story (¿?). After my buying Clannad, there's just no turning back. I'll eagerly follow it. -
Right, bad thing that I tested some text hookers and they crashed on me.

Well, it is true that there are many kinds of people, but granted, there are people just like you. People that like what you like and have experienced what you have experienced. Haven't you ever found a song that resonates with you, because the author went through the very same experience as you? Resonance is a thing. And it's important. While you probably won't find anyone exactly like you, you can find some people similar enough to you. Or at least, like-minded. So, a way to address the creative matter is to do what you like, in hopes that your work reaches people that also like what you like. Pleasing a lot of people takes a deep market analysis to find out what people like, and takes some creative sacrifices.

I want to read some Japanese VN, and my problem is vocabulary (I'm alright with hiragana and katakana), so I just began to write down a quick reference guide for common kanji. I draw the kanji, write down the pronunciation and the meaning. I'm pretty okay at drawing kanji. But that's only because I've done it before when I was 17. I can see how some people get lost. My problem with using JDIC is that usually I don't have an association between the kanji draw and the pronunciation. If all VNs had furigana they would be pretty much a breeze to read. But that's the trick, folks. That's why a need a quick reference to associate the kanji with the pronunciation and meaning.

Kurisu, I'm not so sure about this "do what you like" thing... I mean, look at the 90s. The videogames, the movies, the art, the culture- everyone did what they enjoyed. They imprinted their passion on their works. And they were good works. But in this dark era of post-industrialism, you often encounter lifeless, generic and meaningless works that are so indefinite that they try to appeal to everyone (or at least, if the "like" to "unimpressed" balance is positive, then way to go). Like the new Star Trek saga. Or Star Wars Episode 7. These feel like fanfiction movies, because fanfiction rules all over the place (I don't mean that it's good, I just mean that it has wide acceptance). A creator would feel better doing it the old way and making a game he'd like to play; but you can turn over to the Dark Side and just make a game you think will sell, for the dollarz. In the first case, if the game bombs you still feel honest; in the second, you just screwed.

First off, if you're gonna make a Japanese setup and you do it badly, it's as good as nothing. Write about what you know most, not about clichés. There are bazillions of VNs with the samey clichés, there's no need for one more. Although, going by Sakura games' sales, I can be wrong. But, I guess people that buy Sakura games just don't know any better. Anyway, the first thing you should decide is whether you're going for sales or for quality. Note that quality can mean sales, but the other way around, I'm not so sure. I mean, giving people more of the same can please them, or saturate them. For example, an interesting game is Stay! Stay! DPRK because it parodies an existing Japanese game, but with Western approach, humour, and mindset. Done by Westerners for Westerners. Another example is The way we all go, it's set in Japan, and chock-full of yanderes and yanderes are an intimate Japanese concept, but it could work outside of Japan. Also the setting gets minimally in the way of the storytelling. You won't see the devs stumbling about Japanese things because they avoid it, and just use most generic things like Shinto shrines. Got it?

Riki is just meh. Note that the thread allows other kinds of protagonists, like from anime, or maybe light novels.
-
Punk is based in a four chords composition, and GirlsDeMo is just that, granted, their chords are better quality and sound better, but it's just that. Also the arrangements are top quality. This coming from someone who has only a bare grasp of guitar.

For Veterans: Which heroines do you still love even now?
Okarin replied to Clephas's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Since in an average VN-reading career you'll get hundreds of heroines, they have to be really special to stick. Me, I haven't felt the urge to replay older novels, I'm only moving forward.
