Exactly. And now here comes one important reason why some TLers and editors aren't good. Lack of exposure to the language/languages they are working on. Many wannabe TLers (and editors too by the way) don't read enough stuff in general and aren't exposed to the language/languages they are working with. So no, just working on a fan project by itself isn't enough. These people need to be exposed to lots of text in languages they are working (i.e. they need to read lots of Japanese and/or English texts and aim for comprehension). Also, writing... these people need to learn how to write a sentence in the target language. Many fanTLs that we label as bad just have terrible English (they don't neccesarily have to be a bad TL). Yes, experience certainly helps, but it's not the core trait I'd be looking for if I were to hire someone (if I were a localization company, that is). And I don't think 99% of time someone would outperform someone else just with experience. Those who strive to improve will also attempt to learn their job, not just keep doing it mindlessly.
-
I didn't mean that part was a problem What I meant is... that those same fanTLers who produce "lower quality" end up working officially. Also, how do we know that they improved enough by just doing fan-projects? You say experience, but there's no proof that someone got automatically better at something just because he worked on a fan-TL project.
-
But we have a problem Fred. If you look at the people working on official projects nowadays... you're gonna see that many many of them came from the fanTL scene. I would never talk down fanTLs because I know for a fact that many of them end up working officially nowadays, no matter if they are bad or good (mostly good ones end up working officially).

Now that's interesting news for me. I didn't know that. Thanks. That's pretty interesting info. -
I was mostly referring to this Back there we talked about fanTLs being of lower quality than official localizations because of your third point. But yeah, there's no point about making a case when there are no set rules in this scene. Both fanTLs and official localizations can just turn out bad/good depending on who is working on them.

Schatten isn't a surprise. JAST took the license before the company went under. It just took them a while to get stuff in order and release it (I assume the reason it took them so long was because of Schatten's dev going under and then they had to sort shit with the new license holder... same thing MangaGamer probably had to do with SukuSuki). But when you grab a license from a bankrupt company, that already looks like something new. I don't remember something like that happening until now. -
Objectively, I still agree with you. Proper localization companies do indeed make better TLs than fan-translators (every other non-proper localization company is a scammer).

So... No Sakura no Mori no Dreamers. Still, not bad announcements. I am really surprised about ChaubleSoft, though. I definitely didn't see that one coming (and how it came to be considering the situation around that other ChaubleSoft VN that MangaGamer has license for). Also... still no my elves. RIP -
No, no, not me. Why would I do something like that? I am not like that, LOL. It's pretty obvious it's a bad machine TL edit. Someone who doesn't speak English very well tried to make sense of it, but failed terribly. Now what they used to MTL is up for debate, but it's an MTL nonetheless.

How is Kotonoha Amrilato a counter attack against JAST? Flowers was a VN by MG's partner company and JAST "NTRed" it from under their nose. SukeraSparo is a new company and JAST had nothing to do with them at all. -
No. Sadly, I am not. I wish I was, otherwise I would have began this project myself. The tools for Your Diary aren't a problem. The problem is - TLer.
-
No one more than me would wish for something like this to happen. But I am afraid that you won't find a good TLer to help you out with this.

SRPG eroge Venus Blood Frontier to get an English Kickstarter

Edit, not translation. Ninetail is doing the translation. JAST only gave them an editor to help them out. And from what I see, they gave them someone capable (seems it's a well-known editor/QCer). So yeah, if the TL goes slow, blame Ninetail -

Please, stop shitting on JAST, they aren't that bad. While they do have issues with speed, they at least put some quality in their work, unlike companies like SakuraGame. And anyway, this time the speed won't be dictated by them as this is the project by Ninetail, and you can bet your ass that Ninetail is gonna whip them up to speed. -
I honestly hope they drop it altogether. They don't have the people to properly fix the translation.

I seriously doubt it is SakuUta. Like really, really doubt it. Chances are 00.000000001% that it's SakuUta. Then again, any of these titles could be possible: Sakura Hitohira Koi Moyou Sakura Synchronicity Sakura, Sakimashita. Hatsuyuki Sakura Sakura Iro Quartet Yeah, majority of these are as unlikely as SakuUta xD But still, there's a slight chance...! (personally, I wouldn't mind a localization for Hatsuyaki Sakura XD) -

As for Otome hint... maybe it wasn't about the genre but something from the VN's title? In case the Sakura hint isn't Sakura no Mori, then could this be the title MG picked up: Ojou-sama to Himitsu no Otome Just a guess, nothing more xD -

New partner - Lune (and hopefully "Sukebe Elf no Mori e"). Come on, let's see it happen guys! -
Say what you want about the first chapter, but it ended up being one of my favorites after finishing SubaHibi. For me, the best parts of the VN are the first 3, 4 chapters. After that, the story kinda goes downhill for me and only comes back up a bit in the last chapter. Still a good VN, but I wouldn't label it a "kamige" (there were things I really didn't like about SubaHibi).

I specifically didn't want to include Chinese in the equation because we all know that they are buying these games like crazy. Basically anything with a Chinese TL is bound to sell much much muuuch better then if there were to be only an English release. Edit: Yeah, it might be a solution for poor sales, but I don't want to see localizers doing more Chinese TLs just because of that. We have SakuraGame doing that, and their answer for English releases is to just MTL it which is not acceptable.

I didn't want to name these titles, but yeah, it's pretty known that chuuniges sell like shit. MangaGamer confirmed for all these that they sold poorly. So plot-centric titles rarely sell well. It's a great shame in my opinion. Titles that deserve more attention usually don't get any or barely any. Fata Morgana was praised by word of mouth so much and it still didn't sell that well apparently.
