Insults an indicator of peope's banal use of language

What reason would I have to give some inveterate cunt any of my precious mental bandwidth? -
I can't believe I actually won a game against a real deck with this meme deck. Aggro Reno N'zoth Elise Murloc Shaman, at your service!

I mean, it depends on how much you want to just read outside material vs. find stuff out yourself, but still lol

The Academy for Servant Summoning (ASS) Hotline

I would like an archer class servant, please. If you can, someone who has no objections to fighting dirty. -
TBEE is so good, are you really telling me Kusoge is actually better? Hmm, maybe I will put it on my list...

Filler is in the eye of the beholder. There are well-liked series that are purely SoL / comedy in the non-vn world; it's legit material. I don't think the view that the meat of a moege-style VN is purely the character routes and drama or whatever is to be considered some kind of objective truth. If you consider attaching the two to each other as objectively wrong or whatever, well, a lot of people would disagree with you. Length lets you get depth - of emotion, of story, of character. For more emotion, try to make people get to know and love the characters before doing things to them (usually through SoL or more quiet moments). For depth of story, write a longer story arc. For depth of character, you can use both. If you've seen me groan about OELVNs promising a zillion routes with an alarmingly low estimated playtime, the shallowness likely to occur is why. I do think that knowing how much is enough is a skill, and a better writer can write a story of the same depth in less words. However, I think the best way of going about the whole deal is to infuse scenes, even seemingly trivial ones, with meaning - this can be details picked up later as plot points, or making sure to actually give you those reasons for liking characters, or showing reasons why protag-kun and bishoujo-chan would want to bump naughties. One Thousand Lies comes to mind somewhat, as a decent few of its more ridiculous SoL scenes shine in an entirely new light after you know more about the characters. It also has SoL scenes that are just for fun though - but that's also an emotional curve thing! A balance keeps people interested. This can be engagement / energy based or tone-based. ...Uhh, I think I went off on a tangent... anyway, I like long VNs, but they don't have to be. I'm quite enamored with shorter VNs and doujins for this reason. I think length is primarily useful when it comes to making you attached to a cast of characters; otherwise, it really just needs to be as long as the story being told ""should"" be. I'm a NEET and have fuckloads of time though.

I can personally recommend Gone Home, if only to see what everyone is/was talking about (well, apart from that it's quite good). Pretty much everything is delivered either through text or voiceover (voiceovers are triggered by finding and reading text on objects), with some context given by the 3d environment (such as a certain hidden whiskey (I can't actually remember the type of liquor) bottle you can spot in a room; interesting touch that one). As an amusing touch to show you what the focus of the game is, there's actually a key that makes you lean in a bit for a closer look at something. I don't think it'd hold up that well if you actually were to publish it as an epistolary novel, but that comes with the territory; if the digital part isn't part of the story's power, why have it present at all?

Aight, nevermind then. Well, I can't contradict visual novels being games going by your own definitions of gameplay; all I can do is agree to disagree
-
You're contradicting the OP, which you praised, by saying there's no point in calling them games - walking simulators are not made as visual novels, not sold as visual novels, not bought as visual novels, and pretty rarely discussed as them. The OP's thesis is that despite this, they still belong due to shared genre traits.

If kinetic novels have gameplay, what stops dead-tree books (or ones on your Kindle or whatever newfangled devices are out there now) from having gameplay? EDIT: I'm pretty sure I didn't actually read the above post. RIP.
-
I strongly disagree with not including kinetic novels in visual novels. I would rather consider the kinetic novel the base from which the VN with choices can be formed. This doesn't account for how visual novels developed (rather the reverse of the relationship I propose), but feels more natural to me and my personal #opinion of what is really central to the visual novel medium. Then again, I'm not a guy who finds himself bored by a choiceless story, whilst I know you're a gameplay VN fan :P. The problem with the term interactive storytelling is that most games these days are not storyless, and are certainly interactive. It's pretty hard to find non-silly terms though.

Tried to reread 999. Ruined the game for me.
Zakamutt replied to Funyarinpa's topic in Visual Novel Talk
^ 999 was given an excellent loc edit... so yes, really. -
While there is something to this, the problem here is arguably not the restrictions of the material regarding adherence to medium standards but instead the genre of the stories presented. There are plenty of very much classical VNs which are not moege in any way. I think a more interesting example would be Analogue, which combines a diagetic interface with partially non-linear narrative and other conceits - pushing the form somewhat, but being very much within it.

My 500th Posts - Just Ask Me Question Here
Zakamutt replied to littleshogun's topic in Members' Lounge
As a super serial question... who the hell taught you grammar, and could you tell me where they live so I can publicly humiliate them in some painful way? I honestly skip over half of your posts so I don't have to bother with deciphering them. Other than that I don't actually work on VNTS bar writing commentary these days, though I did do all the work for the 4ch copy we did earlier in our run. You should thank Tay and Deccy even more for that , those guys are crazy.
