  3. Hello guys. Fourth weekly update. This'll be a short one compared to the others. Basically the progress has been steady this whole week and things are progressing nicely. If you haven't seen our plans for the prologue patch in our project thread I'll just copy-paste what I wrote there here: "We decided to release a patch of the first 4298 lines of the game, which is essentially the real prologue of the game (until the OP pops up). Qoobrand released two trial versions. The first of those trials covers exactly that amount of lines until the OP, so we'll release the patch among with the trial version (which is completely free, we will set up a download button in our website for it) so you guys can experience what would be essentially a piece of the final work and what should you expect of our complete patch. Expect also the game's interface translated too." The prologue is almost completely translated (It'll probably be finished this week, no promises though) and I've resumed editing again since I'm on summer vacation now (yay). Fred has also started editing on his side. We have very similar writing styles and I do think our difference won't be noticeable. Darbury has started proofreading on his end and TLC is progressing nicely as well. We'll start looking for QC's once the prologue has been completely polished by both the Editors and the Proofreader.   4. A couple blog posts back, I argued that the story exploration game Gone Home can be considered a visual novel. After some great discussion there, it seemed only logical to tackle the much bigger question: “What is a visual novel? Which is why I’m not going to. That’s a spike-filled, snake-infested pit of a question if I ever saw one — and I already had spikes and snakes for breakfast. Instead, we’re going to attempt to answer a more nuanced question: “What are the minimum requirements something must meet in order to be usefully discussed as a visual novel?” That’s a slightly different but way more useful angle. Just about anything can be used as a chair, but not everything is a “chair.” As a society, we’ve agreed on a certain set of characteristics that chairs share in common. This lets us discuss chairs with one another and be pretty sure we won't be given a pineapple to sit on. We’ll do the same here. But for the sake of brevity, we’ll shorthand that question back down to “What’s a visual novel?” It’ll be our little secret. The VNDB standard The most obvious place to start looking for answers would be The Visual Novel Database (VNDB), home to info on more than 18,000 VNs. Here’s their answer, found in the VNDB FAQ: As a working definition, this leaves a lot to be desired. There are an awful lot of cans, mays, typicals, and usuallys. Worse yet, you could easily dream up a VN that meets almost none of the assumptions laid out here — perhaps an extremely short text-based story in which the words run around the outside of a woodcut illustration. There’s absolutely no background music and the player answers no questions, which results in the same plot every time she plays. A somewhat more satisfying answer can be found in VNDB’s list of requirements that titles must meet before being added to their database. For something to qualify as a visual novel: Better, but still somewhat problematic. For one thing, it conflates the commonly accepted with the essential. What if someone wants to present a story in a manner other than ADV (text in box below image) or NVL (text overlaying image)? What if they thought of a more innovative configuration of text + art? Tough luck, Billy; go suck eggs in the corner. (They don't seem to strictly enforce this, by the way. Digital: A Love Story is on VNDB, even though it eschews both ADV and NVL for a diegetic presentation.) Moreover, these guidelines can’t seem to decide if no gameplay is allowed at all, as the first two sentences suggest, or if up to 1% simple gameplay is okay. A title can also be added to the database if it’s a “visual novel/game” hybrid that meets the following requirements: Again, problematic. The ADV/NVL issue is still there, of course, but now a new wrinkle’s been added: the privileging of narrative over dialogue. The assumption here is that a novel can’t consist entirely (or almost entirely) of dialogue, so a title that doesn’t “consistently” rely upon a formal narrator doesn’t qualify. In truth, there are any number of novels that take this form — The Awkward Age by Henry James, for one. Besides, if Key suddenly dropped a 50-hour all-dialogue school drama that looked and played exactly like Clannad, do you doubt for a second that we'd all consider it a VN? Or that FuwaReviews would give it one star? But I don’t blame VNDB. They’re not looking to define the visual novel. They’re just trying to set up some semi-reasonable guidelines to help streamline their submission process. Without this, every staffer there would probably be eating gun-barrel sandwiches for lunch. Fine. Let’s build something better. I’ve sketched out the beginnings of a more general-purpose test for discussing something as a visual novel. I don’t consider this to be at all authoritative, and in fact, I invite you to critique it and build upon it in the comments below. It’s a starting point, nothing more. A 7-point test for visual novels 1. It must be “read” on a digital device that outputs to a screen. Fairly self-explanatory. Computers, consoles, handhelds, phones, e-readers — hell, even a smart watch would qualify. A printed VN would be considered a graphic novel (or a choose-your-own-adventure book). An audio file of a VN would be an audiobook. 2. It must convey a recognizable narrative. Again, fairly self-explanatory. A VN must be a spoken or written account of connected events. In other words, it needs to tell a story, fictional or otherwise. The entirety of the Detroit phone book displayed in Ren’py is not a VN, even if it’s accompanied by a whole chorus line of catgirls. 3. It must use on-screen text as the primary avenue for conveying that narrative. At the heart of any VN is the act of reading — eyes looking at words and turning them into meaning. If any significant portion of the story is delivered as voice-over or action without on-screen text, it isn’t a visual novel. Watching Game of Thrones on your laptop with subtitles doesn’t suddenly turn it into a VN. 4. It must have visuals paired with that narrative. A visual novel must have visuals. Crazy talk, right? It doesn’t matter if those visuals are 8-bit pixel art, hand illustration, 3D renders, photography, or video. Ideally, these images would be germane to the narrative, but even that’s not technically necessary. Having unrelated images wouldn’t keep something from being a VN; it would just make it a *bad* VN. 5. It must be authored. In other words, the story must be an act of creative intention by its author(s). A VN cannot rely upon sandboxes, emergent gameplay, or similar mechanisms to generate its narrative arc (though they may be used to flavor it). Such experiences, while highly interesting, result in something other than a novel. 6. Reading must comprise the majority of one’s experience with the title. This one gets tricky, because it cuts deep to the heart of another unresolved question: “Is a visual novel a game?” For the purposes of this discussion, I’d suggest there’s a continuum that looks roughly like: not a VN >> game w/ some VN qualities >> game/VN hybrid >> VN w/ some game qualities >> VN Roughly past the halfway mark, we can usefully consider something to be a visual novel for terms of discussion. Below that, we can consider it a game but usefully discuss its VN-like elements (or lack thereof). 7. It must offer a deliberately framed reading experience. This one’s a little tricky. Here’s the problem: a plain old Word doc containing a short story + embedded images could technically satisfy requirements #1 through #6, but we’d be hard-pressed to call that a visual novel. I’m still tweaking the language for #7, but the general idea is that just as a film director frames a shot, controlling what the audience can see and hear at any given moment, so too does the creator of a visual novel. This is unlike our hypothetical Word doc, in which you could widen the window to see more text than intended, skip around the story out of order, scroll the window so that you can read a passage without seeing its associated art, etc. I briefly considered adding an eighth bullet point, but chose to leave it on the cutting room floor. Why did this get dropped? Well, I imagined a traditional novel that was rigged to turn its pages at pre-defined intervals. You can’t speed it up, you can’t slow it down; all you have is an on/off switch. Would that lack of agency suddenly keep this particular book from being a novel? I couldn’t think of a good reason why it would, so I removed the requirement. But I'm open to good arguments for bringing it back. Closing thoughts, for now You might note that I’ve avoided any mention of things like: story genre, branching narratives, art style, country of origin, sexual content, sound/music, etc. That’s by design. These things help inform what type of VN a title is, not whether it can be discussed as one. You might also note that my 7-point test would disqualify Gone Home from being considered a visual novel, invalidating my earlier argument. That’s also by design. Kill your darlings, amirite?

Visual Novel Translation Status (06/11/2016) Since Tay this time using the sketch from Fault's artist in regard of Fata Morgana Steam release, so this week because at the picture we had characters from both Fata Morgana (Maid and White Haired Girl) and Fault (Selphine and Ritona), I made the title 'Fata Morgana and Fault Crossover Fan Fiction'. Oh, and speaking about Fata Morgana it was quite interesting, although the second door was quite bloody imo (Also if you looking for moe girl in Fata Morgana, I suggest you better look at Pauline because I think her design was the most close resemble from Japanese anime girl usual design imo). Anyway, here's my VNTS Review for this week, and I think for this week (And maybe in next weeks depending of my interest) I'll open new segment with the title 'Other' which covered all of the translation group beside usual 4 (Sekai, Mangagamer, JAST, and Fan Translation), or in VNTS word it would be Miscellaneous Projects. As for my opinion, the most interesting update was from Other and Fan Translation, while Mangagamer was had usual 2 weeks update and Sekai was also in their usual state (They add Tenshin Rahman and Chrono Clock now, so I should keep eye on those 2 now). Sekai Project Usual update from them, although most of them was slowed down though if we look at the VNTS page (The progress for the updates was not even touching 5%), and we also had some VN which had hiatus (Although it wasn't interesting one anyway) so for this week Sekai Project segment wasn't too interesting from the update (Oh, as for Chrono Clock and Tenshin Rahman translation progress, it was at 17.22% and 25.38% respectively). Instead of looking at less lively update from Sekai, I think I'll talk about the survey from Sekai since doddler post the Sekai's survey form picture. For the first picture here, well too bad I didn't had any of the console so if Sekai provide number 6 for none, I'll fill all of the choice with 6 ie I will not play VN on any of those console. For the 2nd picture here, I think for now I would fill 1 for Maitetsu, 2 for KARAKARA, 3 for Just Desert, and the rest with 12. It means that for now only Maitetsu and KARAKARA interest me right now, while Just Desert was because the VN once again from Indonesia. Although I knew that Meikyuu and Tokeijikake was good stuff, the reason I wasn't looking forward to it because I knew since back when Kajitsu was in translating process that Meikyuu was ended in cliffhanger, while I'd also read that Tokeijikake was also ended in unresolved mystery. Oh, and for Hoshimemo I think even if the translation was quite bad for some people (Personally I didn't care), it was already discussed and reviewed since back at 2012 so not looking forward to it. That's all for Sekai segment this week. Mangagamer Well, Da Capo 3 translation progress wasn't at 100% (To be exact, the translation progress was at 97% and editing progress was at 95%), but at least it's still had the progress, and hopefully the translator will fulfill his promise to finish it in less than 3 weeks (In more than 3 week we'll had AX, and the translator promise that he'll finish the translation before AX). As for other progress, actually not to much but for roundup here Kuroinu was at 78% translated, Pygmalion was fully translated and 8% edited, and for Bokuten it was also already fully translated and for editing process it was at 89%. And also Mangagamer tease us here in regard of in scripting project. I wonder if one of the project would be Himawari. Well, let's see it later. Oh, and for last update I forgot about it before, but the translation progress for Fata Morgana fandisc was at 12%. Speaking about Fata Morgana, I'd also quite interested with the Drama CD (Speaking about Drama CD, Mangagamer already had Yurirei 3rd Drama CD ready for pre-order there) just like the translator in the interview here, because it was contained some interesting seiyuu. For the special service, since Tay promote Fata Morgana in image header, how about I also give seiyuu list and their MAL page too. Anyway, here's the cast for Fata Morgana Drama CD (I hope if Novectale release voiced version of Fata Morgana, they will use seiyuu from Drama CD). Michel: Takahiro Sakurai The Maid: Asami Seto The Girl with White Hair: Mamiko Noto Mell Rhodes: Soichiro Hoshi Nellie Rhodes: Kana Asumi The Man: Kenichi Suzumura Pauline: Aki Toyosaki Javi: Yuki Kaji Maria Campanella: Yui Horie Jacopo Bearzatti: Junichi Suwabe And for last voiced character, since it was spoiler I'll just tell that Ami Koshimizu will voiced the spoiler character. Well, if some of you didn't interested in Fata Morgana before, maybe you could consider it from Drama CD seiyuu, and it was once again quite interesting cast. That's all for Mangagamer section here. Other The reason I opened this section because we had some interesting update here, and one of them was surprise. Okay, as for this section we already knew that Moonstone will release their moege 'Love Sweets' for English speaker, but we obviously still didn't know when the release date is (Although Moonstone promise us it will be this year). As for Corona Blossom IGG, looks like it'll be only for Chapter 1 while Frontwing want to release Chapter 2 and 3 separately. We still didn't knew though if the VN was could only fully enjoyed by playing all of 3 chapters or not, but I think it was quite not-so-good tactic because it was basically tell the backer that they willing to make more money by making separated release while Frontwing probably could make it in one volume only. Oh well, it's Frontwing strategy though and for Corona Blossom Chapter 1 campaign, right now it was managed to gather 17,052 from the target of 30,000 (56.84% funded). As for Libra, this time it was managed to surprise me by having delivered the progress at Mari's route translation (50% translated right now), but waiting 25 days for 25% progress (Coincidentally the number was same) was definitely tell us the progress was quite slow imo. Well, since Mikandi in the translation page promise us that there will be update for each week, I will keep my eye on it. Finally, for surprise announcement, in 5 days we'll had another new translated VN. As for the premise, it was MC and her little sister will be going to becoming nurse and so they started their study. From the review, I learned that this game was probably had 4 routes for all of heroine. Oh, and just in case you didn't get it MC here was female, so we'll get the yuri (But since it was on Steam and the producer was Kogado, there's no sex scene here). And for the title, once again instead of calling 'Nurse Love Addiction' I'll called this VN Hakuai. For future player of Hakuai, here's the advice from me. Expect some interesting CG in the middle of story based on spoiler filled review that I read (Once again I wonder what kind of reaction Hakuai player will had here). And since both Zakamutt and Decay was had some complain in regard of translation and UI respectively, I think for now I didn't had any problem with that, although to response Decay it would be nice though if we could play the demo to see if we could adjust the UI to transparent like Japanese demo. Oh well, and that's all for new section here. Fan Translation For this week, we had Yukikaze full patch released. While I said I'm far more interested with Yukikaze than Asagi, I think for the woman's breast other than Yukikaze the size was very inappropriate (I knew it was for anyone elso who had vey big breast fetish, but still). Therefore, when I saw Yukikaze, I think I like her design because her breast wasn't too big or in other word flat (Well, if nukige VN offer too many big breast girl, I think seeing flat one was quite refreshing). And speaking about big breast nukige, we had another update in regard of big breast nukige translation project. Once again, here's the page and according to this post, he'll release this patch in this June (For the progress, it was already finished translating and right now it was in editing). Anyway, for any reader here who had fetish for big breast, looking forward to the patch release. For non nukige project, looks like both Tay and Decay forgot to add this (I knew it was probably in regard of Mangagamer partnership with Navel), so I think I'll keep an eye on this project. Anyway, the project was already here for a while since August, and for the progress it was 30% translated (By the way, the premise was quite interesting with MC cosplay as the girl in order to enter girl's school). Looks quite good if we look from VNDB score (8 for average at VNDB right now). Anyway, for this week fan translation update, in regard of ToHeart 2 we had ittaku release another beta patch here, and FredtheBarber finished editing twin's route (And bring the editing progress to 85%, also they started to editing Manaka and Sasara route). Also they finished proofreading Konomi route and started on Tamaki route. For Bishoujo Mangekyou, this week we had the 8th script was at 37.7% (Or around 90% to overall script) translated and 9.9% edited. For Tsui Yuri, we had 36% script translated and 8% edited. As for release date for full patch, the translators of those 3 VN (Ittaku, Arcadeotic, and Dergonu) promised that they aim for 2016 release. Good luck for those three. For Saku Saku, there's no progress other than Akerou assure us that the QC still ongoing, while for Irotoridori the progress was at 13% translated (Also Akerou promised us that by August he already finished translating Irotoridori common route. Let's see it later). Majoki right now was at 11% translated and 5% edited (Nice progress). Finally for Astral Air, this week even crazy was understatement for their progress. In case you wondering, this week the translating progress from last week was at 3.59% (I though 1.65% was already crazy enough), bringing the overall translation progress to 84.95%. And for more news, Corona route was fully translated and they will translated Yuuki route next. Well, looks like Chuee promise in regard of translation progress at summer will picked up was true. I've come throught the thread, and seriously i don't get some people reactions here: it's not like they are going to replace the original japanese voice by an english dub...just an option available People who say japanese developpers might aim a change for vn for the west, seriously i don't get it. I don't see how the adding of a dub which doesn't change the original content of the game at all in its essence can be interpreted to be something like that. I don't understand the way some fans here are approaching the matter . Some of the reactions just seems "elitist" to me. Also i don't like how some people seems to like categorizing condescendently supposed audience like "high level nerdy otaku", "lonely nerds" and such. You don't know who exactly make up this audience, actually, it is just based of your own preconceptions, and there is no need to make judgemental comments like you are better than others whereas you are also visual novel fans. And i don't see the point of using the argument of costs for justifing about a dub being a "good" move or not. It's not like it's the fans who are doing the investment or creating the content. To me it sound like people who are going to say to japanese developpers to not add voices in games because well "you have to diminish costs" which i find completely innapropriate. You are not entitled to comment about costs and all when you are not even involved into the creating process. As a mere customer, complaining about it, is i find, totally out of place. Basically how i see this: t's like having anime dubbed in another language that Japanese. When people are making this it's for providing something else which might appeal to other people as well, but is still not something specifically aimed at an audience, it just create a bonus and some people who usually listen japanese version might even try it out of curiosity and like it. I don't see it like a way to sustain a new audience because the old one is not sufficient enought (Jast as a company is making profit for every game they are licensing), but it's the nature of buissness to aim to widden the audience or improve sales. Like i said, If the original track is still available and the other one is optionnal, i don't see any problem at all really. I don't really know about the game in question, but if you look it into the perspective of other medias having some relation to the vn market , there is really nothing special or worth making assumptions about an editor making doubtfull choices and all. Sorry but some of the reactions here kind of annoyed me, so it had to be said.

  7. It actually is, I was one of the first to say it'd be trash like the rest have been but ever since, I've actually played it and enjoyed the dungeon crawler gameplay. I think that it is like @Dergonu said and they've improved, while they still have a lot of flaws to fix and things to improve we can't deny that they've gotten better with this latest instalment of their "series".

You guys are talking like they have some kind of holy mission or they "have" to show the greatness of visual novels to entire world etc. Its just a business, as long as they are making enough profit why would they care about the "bad reputation" or "having less plot" honestly.

  9. I use symlinks to point all folders (like Mangagamer, Nitroplus) from my profile to my memory card. G-Senjou saves in your documents folder iirc. So if you put them back there and game version is same - it should work. Only problem I ever had with G-Senjou (or was it Sharin no Kuni?) is that I played 90% of it on my android tablet using Kirikiriroid2, and I needed space, so copied save files from it to PC and assumed it should work. But no luck, was showing an error. I fixed it anyway, it was because Android uses more recent version of krkr2 than PC version.

  12. This came across my twitter feed today, and I cringed hard. As pretty much the only person around here who will admit to enjoying watching anime with English dubs (recent dubs, that is, not the crap they churned out 15 years ago), I've sometimes wondered whether we'd ever see a VN with an English dub. On these boards, Huniepop gets a fair bit of both hate and love for its voice acting - I personally think both are deserved (the hate, for Nikki; the love, for the rest of the cast; seriously, Kyu, marry me). But Huniepop is of course originally an English-language game and is a far cry from a VN, even though we talk about it a lot around here. But the day has finally come. Our historical first (as far as I know) English-dubbed honest-to-God Japanese VN is on its way, and I'm sure @Rooke will be delighted more than anyone by this double-whammy of good news: I get it, I really do. Growth has stagnated. They want to branch out, grow their market in new directions. If this is it, more power to them. But this isn't it. This isn't going to work. Somebody, save us before it's too late.

  14. basically, it has 5 routes on first walkthrough. at the end, u save the data to continue to harder mode(normal also can). at 2nd time, there is one true route added which is, well, u will know it soon. Choices: 1 point Boss Battles: 1 Point per Heroine in Party with Nozomu MVP: 5 Points Heart Battles: 1 Point per Heroine in party with Nozomu Izumo Shrine choices: 2 Points on selected Heroine (Narukana not available) Helping Narukana up in dream: 20 points (2nd run onwards only, you must avoid getting more points or equal with other heroines. TESTED. Its fun testing with L89 characters in Normal mode. *_*) Its ok to let Nozomu or any other character besides Heroines get MVPs. The game decides which girl you get for total points selected. the girl can have like 5 points only and you can still get her route as long as the others are below her. If she ties, it follows a priority system. If there is a tie, the girl on the top of the priority system gets the route: 1. Satsuki 2. Nozomi 3. Ruputna 4. Katima 5. Naya 6. Narukana The events with Nozomi in chapter 6 and Satsuki in Chapter 8 do NOT decide if you are on their route, and are actually part of the story. Also note that during the first trip into town in the alternate world, Nozomu will go to town with the girl with the highest affection aside from Satsuki and Nozomi and there will be a short event. THIS EVENT also does NOT decide that you are on that girl’s route, it just tells you who is where on the affection ladder, Priority is as follows: 1. Ruputna 2. Katima 3. Naya If you are however going for these girls, and you get their event, then its a good sign, however if you are going for Satsuki or Nozomi, it doesn’t mean its panic time, your Satsuki or Nozomi may still be on top, just that you’ll get to know who is rank 2 or 3 at that point. Why bother you ask? Simple, this means its your LAST chance if you decide you don’t want to go Satsuki’s or Nozomi’s route, all you have to do is have Nozomu pair with the desired girl and take the longer route in the 1st Izumo battle, which is loaded with Heart battles. Make sure you get the MVp for her and you’re set. This of course, applies if your Nozomi and or Satsuki hasn’t been intensely raking up affection points like crazy (every boss fight, mvp, every heart battle from Chapter 1-7, choices directed 100% to them only etc). If that’s the case, you’re screwed. xD took this off a comment on erogedl, but remember reading this on a walkthrough can't seem to find it anymore though. Also pretty sure i remember narukana having highest priority on route order

  16. Finished Hitsugi no Chaika and its second season. Another fantasy/medieval story I liked. This one felt modern, though, unlike Scrapped Princess. It once again tackled some themes I liked and how happy I was we got the protagonist we did. I can elaborate, but I dislike spoiling things. Now starting Chihayafuru. Took me a while to warm up to it, but I'm ready now. In that respect, it's kind of like Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. In fact, from the first three episodes alone it seems they may have a few things in common, and include some "feels" in their repertoire. But I don't really know yet. Will have to continue watching.

  18. there never was a complete 18+ patch & the group + their progress went straight into oblivion the same day craneanime´s forum dissappeared for various reasons. must be noted though that they didnt mention anything regarding a possible c&d or cooperating with sekai on bringing the adult stuff over, actually they denied that possibility. no idea what actually happened there, might be still ongoing but who knows

  20. This is the problem with Sekai Project's state of mind when it comes to 18+ releases. The fans have to scream in their faces in order to get the full release of games, and even if they do, it wont necessarily be enough. Just look at how they are handling the Grisaia triology. They will be releasing 18+ versions, but it's being done months after the censored game comes out. Not that many people will bother buying both versions, and people also hate waiting, which means many fans will just give in and buy the all ages version. This then creates a warped image of what their fans wants. People obviously want the original game, and even if there are people who doesn't want to play the 18+ content, they can just skip it. There really is no justification for an all ages release of eroge beyond SP wanting to earn more money. (It sucks, but censored steam games sells.) Their silly threads asking "do you want an 18+ release?" is more of a taunt than anything else. Luckily Mangagamer is a thing.

  22. Kusarihime was pretty peculiar experience. It's little all over the place, but somehow very fulfilling at the same time. I'll probably have to, and I want to read it again to understand it better and to see the scenes I missed. Kusarihime is very much a story where the journey is more important than the destination. It get's pretty strange near the end and quite lot was left pretty uncertain, but at the same time I felt like I read something really cool. It was way more more focused in human emotions and minds than I initially thought. While there is of course supernatural parts to it as well, but it's more about the shadows in people's hears. And Kusarihime has plenty of really impacful scenes concerning those. It's also really atmospheric game and storybook aesthetic makes it even better. Something I really liked in Kusarihime is how well the story and the writing flows. From the scene to scene, event to next, adding steadily new things to keep it interesting and steadily progressing. Sometimes things go faster, sometimes slower; there's laid-back times and desperate times, but flowing feeling stays the same. Writing helps in this too. It's simple enough and reads fairly easily, but has it own nice feel. And like the story, it flows very naturally between narration, dialogue and sometimes pretty ephemeral descriptions. Kusarihime is just really satisfying visual novel to read. Quite numerous H-scenes were the only things hindering my reading enjoyment, but that's just me finding H-scenes kind of annoying to read in general, since for the most part they are not just throwaway scenes and actually contain content worth reading outside of the deed. Overall I liked Kusarihime a lot. There are parts that feel little incomplete, yet it has charm that makes me forgive most of it. Kusarihime might be flawed, but it's a pretty damn cool experience.

Speaking about Sakura Dungeon, I played it and I think it's not too bad if we look at the gameplaly, although the gameplay itself could became repetitive though (Well, usually this is common problem for RPG). But I think while the gameplay was fun, lack of attribute increase was made this game quite unrewarding for levelling your party other than your main (I mean usually in dungeon crawler you could see of how much your stat increase, while here you could only see your stat for level 1 or level 10 was same). Beside from the scroll item I could see that all party member could basically became clone of each other, except with different passive skill. The battle itself actually quite interesting, since here we had mana doubled duty as rate of how well you could hit or evade. As for capturing, well the monster was all girl and from the body it was all the same so it could get repetitive too. And for the engine, looks like Renpy wasn't suitable for this game because my Sakura Dungeon was run slowly (Although it could be my laptop though). But from there I could see of how Winged Cloud push Renpy engine limit. And for the story and character, it was very standard I think although the interaction between Ceri and Yomi was nice though. I think that's all for my comment about Sakura Dungeon.

  25. Alright here's a thought, beside me are there anyone else that hate the concept of 'Main Heroine' in a story that have more than one Love Interests? As in, 'No matter what development happen and how perfect they are as a couple she won't win because she's not the main heroine' kind of plot. Purely an opinion of course but i really feel that it's kind of unfair that a Side Heroine who have better chemistry with the MC lose just because she's not the Main, and in the end of the story, the Main Heroine will end up with the MC simply because she's a Main Heroine. Quite honestly, i'm sick with this kind of plot and got dissapointed many time because of this IF the romance between the MC is well develop then i wouldn't have complain, but more often than not it's their status as Main Heroine that enable them to win.

At any rate, although it bears almost no resemblance to NekoPara, of course you should play Steins;Gate. Everyone should play Steins;Gate. It's a 10/10. There aren't a lot of those around.

  28. There are wiki pages from rpg vns around. So you can search for wiki pages in jp for the vn you are reading. Can easily check the battle combat words etc from there.   30. umm... I hate to say it, but ninety-percent of the time, if you are playing a VN-rpg hybrid you need to know kanji to decipher the interface. There are interface patches for most Eushully games, but other companies' works don't, for the most part. Here are a few basic kanji that tend to show up in a lot of gameplay-hybrids. 攻 Generally can be seen as part of an attack-related stat 坊 Defensive-related 速 speed-related 運 luck-related 魔 magic-related 回避 Evasion, in most cases. In the case of the IM games, the first kanji gets tacked onto the attack and defense kanji from above for 'number of defenses and number of attacks', which is a unique stat from those games. Other than that, I can't really help you, since the variance is so wide.

  34. Right after Sayuri says "This is my goal," she continues to explain to Yuuichi, "Sayuri has still a long way to go. Sayuri will do her best. So please, wait a little longer." I feel this provides ample evidence that she's acknowledging there is a problem and is reassuring Yuuichi who asked, "I can't replace Kazuya but, can you at least treat me the same?" Where I can see why you point out Sayuri is clinging to the past, there's evidence here that shows that, despite the three years she had with Mai, she's only barely still getting started. Of course it would seem like she's not letting go because of this but in her defense, most of us don't in real life, and the best we can hope for is coming to terms with our sad moments like Sayuri does in Kanon. Moving on, Yuuichi's immediate thoughts upon hearing Sayuri words are: "I couldn't say anything. I couldn't even blurt out an apology. I felted ashamed for not understanding it earlier. Maybe it's something Mai doesn't even know. Those unspoken words." As a first party observer witnessing Sayuri's story, he provides primary commentary within Kanon on how insensitive and thoughtless it was asking Sayuri to treat him the same as Kazuya. I take this as an indirect way of Kanon telling readers that Yuuichi's been under estimating how far Sayuri has come and how hard she works knowing she can't live that way forever. I feel that it would be unwise to ignore this subtext in determining her ending as it's evidence of coming to terms with Kazuya. Furthermore, Sayuri follows up to Yuuichi thoughts and says, "Someday, I'll use those words. Though, Sayuri doesn't even know when that will be. But someday, surely…. (She then says here to imitate a greeting) Morning, Yuuichi-kun. Like that." Though she admits that doesn’t feel comfortable yet to dropping the politeness with Yuucihi, she provides the proof of concept of when such a day will come. Yuuichi, in her eyes, is very close in crossing over the threshold of being familiar with Sayuri and she is telling him here that it’s a definite possibility she will start calling him the way she does Mai. Yuuichi response here after that is a simple, "Don't worry, I'm in no hurry. Just take your time." With all this in mind, I actually have to disagree with you that the ending CG is contradictory to a happy end. The subtext in the previous conversations provide a strong reasoning why we shouldn't look at it melancholically. Furthermore, the literally last words of Sayuri, "Isn't this… what I always wanted? The happiness I've been searching all this time," I feel is ample evidence that the CG is a happy one. If we're literally following her line of thought, she's thinking that all she ever wanted to do with Kazuya, she's obtain with Mai and Yuuichi. This is a line of interpretation that's powered by the subtext of how she emerged, with the knowledge of how to be happy, from her depression, by becoming best friends with Mai, and the current every day happiness she's experiencing. To look at it another way, I definitively think that Sayuri is thinking about her brother. THE MAJOR difference however is that she's thinking of him in a happy manner. The thoughts of him there no longer pains her and she can think back on him now, after becoming friends with Mai and Yuuichi, cheerfully. Just because Sayuri still has feelings for him and remembers him, it doesn't mean that its cruel fate that shackles her to the past. If anything, I think it's giving her strength now to continue happily forward much as for his sake as her own. Other than that, I don't see too much significance that Sayuri's happiness is tied to Mai and Yuuichi. I feel what's more important is that her miracle of happiness is achieved through them. She saves herself through them and that's what is crucial about her ending. Furthermore, there is the fact the Sayuri is a supporting actress to Mai's story and Yuuichi, in being a decent human being, can't ignore Mai for Sayuri as he'll have to turn a blind eye to the night fighting at school. In this case, it's literally, "Love unlike justice, which cannot lose, DOESN'T have to WIN." A Yuuichi that chases a love that involves Sayuri could only end badly for Mai. I imagine Sayuri wouldn't do that to Mai like she says at the end of Mai's route. [Edit: It’s a lot like the case of Toradora where Mai's voice actress Tamura plays the character Minori. Minori has obvious feelings for Ryuji but sees her best friend Taiga loving him just as much, if not more, and decides to let Taiga have him as she needs his company more than her. I feel its likewise in this case for Sayuri.] To further clarify, Sayuri is plenty happy as she is and I don't see that as a tragedy. She doesn't need Yuuichi the way Mai does nor does her rasion d' tere for living revolve around being accepted like Mai. Sayuri's miracle here is that she actually does find people she can make happy and therefore bring herself to be happy too. In summary, Sayuri has been longed saved way before Mai was in my opinion. It's just that her tragic past still clings closely to her and still has its influence. Just not enough though, to me, to justify saying that Sayuri isn't happy or doomed because to it. On a side note, I suppose she can be less self-deprecating to better signify better the happiness she is living in. Overall, this is why I think Sayuri isn't a tragic character nor is her ending. I just wonder if my line of reasoning and evidence is compelling enough evidence to convince you. I'll admit though to having feelings, in trying to prove my own analysis, that I'm selling short the misery Sayuri did experience. But, I think Sayuri's route is complex enough, despite the 30 minute playtime, to intellectually dwell on whether if she is or not happy at the end of Kanon. I'm just on the opinion she is. Now ignoring the talk of analysis for a bit, I can understand the feelings of not being enthusiastic for visual novels like you used to. I took like a year and a half to finish the last VN before Kanon for me to finish. For me, I get restless siting in one place and visual novels I feel are a very passive hobby that doesn't distract me from those anxious feelings. That's why I took a long break as I just sick of using my free time looking at a computer screen despite enjoying the stories very much so. In the case of Kanon, I felt I was driven to have a primary experience of the story after watching the anime. Every step of the way though it felt like a tedious chore and a homework I gave myself. In other words, I really didn't enjoy my time with Kanon lmao despite more than 8k words I dedicated to the story. I have my OCD about following a creators work chronologically and being a completionist about finishing what I started to thank.. As for all my posts, I decided to write everything I did so that in my discussions with everyone, I can sort all my feelings on the matter Kanon lest I want to start reading from page one again. I rather have fun in showing someone else my interpretations and learning something new from another person view point than go over the same boring material. I say boring in this case as I read the book so much that I'm sick and tire of it lol. Overall, yeah I feel you lol and that I'm not very active part of a community either. I just decided to join Fuwanovel's in hopes that someone here actually read Kanon. I used to be a big forum goer back in the day however. That's why I'm so used to writing these big posts as I had ran the debate tournaments, RPG sections, and writing forum. Not to say that you should make everything balance but, I feel it would add more for the primary reader's enjoyment to hear more of your own thoughts than what just Kanon/Yuuichi says about Mai and Sayuri. That said, it serves as a good refresher and it accomplishes that goal well. Now for some off topic stuff, I have now written more on the discussion of Kanon than I have for my love of Type-moon, Monogatari, and freaking Madoka Magica. All three of them I own stuff of and seen their animes countless times. I love them a whole lot more than I did with Kanon, especially Madoka Magica which I think is Flawless, but, I feel Kanon just became one of those stories I worked to love like I did Elfen Lied. Now, that's a story I know I liked but wasn't in love with, Elfie Lied that is, but ended up wanting to have a complete understanding of it. So like with Kanon, I read the whole manga and discussing it at lengths with friends that matched the intensity of my Type-moon and Madoka Magica love. I suppose , in these cases, that both works are like cats in that it takes effort to love and that's what makes the love more special than what comes naturally.

  39. Soon. Btw, now that replaying 999 ruined it for you... ~~ Cold Steel is great. It's a very slice of lifey JRPG, slow paced, so its not for people who want to jump straight off the train and into the action FFVII-style. You get 'free' days in between field studies to bond with classmates and converse/quest with townsfolk, and holy crap EVERYBODY in the main town has their own ongoing little story going on, they're not your typical one-time-one-line NPCs, so while it can feel chorey at times to have to walk all over and talk to everyone to see what's new as the main story goes on, it can also feel quite fulfilling.

  40. Honestly I'm not really concerned about this whatsoever. They've already confirmed it will still maintain the Japanese audio as well so if JAST wants to try something different like this all the power to them. As long as we don't have to worry about english replacing the japanese audio this should do nothing but open up the game to a wider audience.
