Yeah, let's hope not. The last thing any country needs is to waste money plowing themselves in the middle east to go hunt the terrorists. That's what they use as propaganda to recruit people to their ranks.

I don't think this game is planned to be 18+ so no hair job scenes. Not that I'd really want to imagine what someone sticking their penis into that massive clump of hair would look like.

Most forms of media are targeted towards specific people. A translation of a media is the same. Most otaku-related media retain honorifics, and as a result the vast majority of anyone who consumes any otaku material knows what they mean due to experience. It's not like otaku stuff is even that friendly towards newcomers in the first place, since so many of the common tropes involve actual Japan cultural events and practices. If I were translating something for a general audience who knew nothing culturally about Japan, I'd take out honorifics and probably more than just that. Most mainstream game translations replace cultural things too. Though if I'm translating something for an audience that already is familiar with their usage, I'm not going to go through the extra hassle of figuring out elaborate ways to work around eliminating honorifics for the benefit of a tiny, tiny number of potential readers.

The only reason to leave them in is because taking them out makes certain situations an absolute pain in the ass. For example, when characters specifically mention the honorific, or go from calling someone A-san to just A, or A-kun/A-chan. For example, one scene in the game I'm editing has the main character meet a heroine for the first time, and the dialogue goes something like, "Okay, Mizunose." "...No honorific?" "Ah, sorry. I'm not really good with these things." If you were to take out honorifics, you'd basically be forced to rewrite the entire dialogue here. I'm sure people that translate literature more than likely just cut things like that out, as they probably do with every "Itadakimasu.", because they can. Though translations of things like VNs and anime are less at liberty with what they can and can't do, so it's more easier to just leave them in and expect the reader to understand them decently enough (which the vast majority of these people do).

All the people who go on about authorial intent, wastes of effort, how the works of the creators should be preserved at all costs, and so on, would be utterly shocked at how games are made. You don't want to know how many committees look at the typical game's script and decide on what gets thrown out, what stays, and what gets drastically changed, based on a huge number of factors. I'm sure G-Senjou no Maou went through this process with the writing, art, music, sound effects, and voicework. Most creative works, including VNs, aren't made by individuals in isolation but entire companies. Some people looking at the CGs and backgrounds years later determining what else to cut is just another extension of this. Well, that's all a process leading up to the final product. Whatever gets scraped in that process I can at least be assured was done so purposefully to make the final product better. Cutting 1/4th of the picture because that's the only way to get it up to 16:9 does kind of suck, and I don't see why it's that hard to understand why some people might be a bit disappointed.

Back on topic: I should point out that while Doddler doesn’t agree with their public relations behaviour (for obvious reasons,) he says the game looks much better in 1280x720 than it did at 800x600, even with the cropping. So there you go, an endorsement from someone many in the VN community respects and adores. Maybe that will calm the hyperbole over the issue. Cropping itself isn’t a bad thing. They seemed to have exchanged a higher resolution for less overall information. It becomes a bad thing if important aspects are chopped out, so some kind hearted guinea pig really needs to play through and offer some feedback for the fans (didn’t enjoy the VN so it won’t be me.) What does that have to do with anything. Doddler programs things, there's no reason to hold his opinion on artwork over everyone else's simply because he's more known. Personally I like to think artists put effort into the background just as much as they put effort into drawing the focus, so even just cutting out 'meaningless bits' is somewhat of a shame. Especially since it announced that the game was going to be upscaled, yet a lot of people wouldn't exactly call that an improvement if that means losing something else in return for it.

Mainly 4chan. Probably because 4chan represent the traditional, Eroge fanbase, and Dovac realising this fanbase consists mainly of pirates said 'fuck those people' and went looking for greener pastures. Not a popular decision, but a fairly logical business one. Yet they buy products too. Ignoring a group of 200 people because you can get 300 people elsewhere doesn't make sense when you can appeal to both and get 500.

Well, freedom of speech or not, censoring anything speaking against you is kind of a bad idea, and they more than likely shouldn't have started deleting threads without saying anything first. That's probably what caused people to be so angry in the first place.

Uh, what's wrong with the current Muv Luv translation? I saw nothing wrong with it, it wasn't Mirror Moon level perhaps, but it was above average for a fan translation. I haven't read Muv-Luv in Japanese but Ixrec simply isn't a very good translator. His translations are overly stiff and full of bad writing and weird phrasing. Muv-Luv isn't exactly known for its beautiful prose so it probably doesn't suffer as much in that regard as for example his translations of Comyu, Inganock or Rewrite but bad prose isn't the only issue with his work. It is often overly literal which gives me the impression that he doesn't know Japanese very well (at least not well enough to be translating), a lot of his translations basically seem like he looked up the words or kanji in a dictionary and just inserted the first definition that appeared. Like he apparently translated 紐 as shoestring in Rewrite for example which is an incredibly amateurish mistake. A lot of people have impressions like "Ixrec's translations might be a bit stiff but otherwise they're correct" or something like that but this isn't true. When he translated Muv-Luv there wasn't a lot criticism as the state of VN translations back then were pretty bad in general. If you've look up stuff from Rewrite and Comyu though which he did later you'll find tons of tons of examples that are just flat out wrong. Some examples from Rewrite: All of these are wrong. They're not just badly phrased. They are wrong. Yet without seeing the Japanese you wouldn't know as they all make sense and are grammatically correct. The first two sentences are also incredibly easy, they're on the level that someone like me who has known enough Japanese to be able to read VNs in less than a year could translate them correctly. And if his Rewrite translation is full of mistakes like these that certainly doesn't imply good things about his earlier muv-luv translation. He has also said that he doesn't think the prose matters and that the only thing that makes a visual novel well written is the plot and the twists and whatever, which really isn't encouraging to hear from someone who constantly picks works that are renowned for their prose to translate. If you've read some of his reviews he pretty much only cares about most works at a very superficial level which is a fine way to approach something as a reader (though you're definitly missing out) but completely unacceptable for a translator. If you have no affection for language you really don't have any business translating anything other than stuff like manuals. And yeah MLA's translation might be above avergae for a fan translation but that says more about the state of fan translations than anything else. While MLA isn't my favourite or anything it is one of the most well-regarded and influential VNs of all time it absolutely deserves the best translation possible. But what I'm really worried about isn't even the translation for the main trilogy but the side stories. The muv-luv team has stated several times that they are going to work with Alternative Projects on the side stories. From what I've seen their translations are so beyond the pale that they make Ixrec's look good. Their works include wonderful translations like: Some people from Alternative Projects have said that they have improved and if that's true I'm glad though I still have my doubts that their current level is anywhere near professional quality. But the problems in their earlier translations certainly can't be fixed with editing or proofreading, it needs a complete re-translation and that Degica doesn't seem to intend to do that is very worrying. I've read both Comyu and Ingaock. I saw absolutely nothing wrong or stiff about their translations. They come across to me as very well done VNs. I dunno where you have this myth that "in 2010, VN Translations weren't known for their quality" So when did they become known for their quality? He didn't machine translate. The story all flowed very naturally, nothing confused me, and I understood all the characters personalities. If he's so shitty at it, you should translate them then. Yeah, see, that's what Ixrec thinks too. As long as the story is still understandable it doesn't matter! The problem is if you accept that what he puts out is correct you won't see a problem with it. Most of what I've heard about Comyu from people that have read it in Japanese is that it's really well written. Reading Ixrec's English version of Comyu doesn't give me the impression of something that's very well written.

Eh, it's not that big of a deal, but still pretty shitty when the big deal is that the game's supposed to be upscaled to a higher resolution, but in the process a chunk of the CG gets cut out.

Is it really that much of a wonder if this is how 90%+ of VN companies will operate? You hear about it less with MG because the friction they encounter with their partners is much less public. JAST, though, has been full of woes dealing with 0verflow/Klon and the speed at which they've been addressing Shiny Days issues, and it's well known how much trouble they had with Nitro+ when that relationship was new. Visual Novel companies aren't very friendly, period. Or perhaps more accurately, they tend to be very difficult to work with. I don't know, MG's partners seem a lot better. At least with companies like Clockup and The SonoHana makers, you feel like they're actually really happy to have their games played overseas rather than just being in it for the money.

This would be an immense waste of time. Maybe, but honestly getting Ixrec's translation up to good quality would take a long time too. You'd need to run a thorough translation check on everything, then have a highly skilled editor look over the whole thing. Nobody really knows what Degica is doing with it because they've only given us vague statements, but it appears they're having a bunch of people work on it like Clannad was, so that's not very reassuring.

I understand what you mean but for some reason this one translation is the worst I've ever seen imo. I'm not saying there aren't worse translations out there but this one suffers from choosing weird word choices. Sometimes I even had to look up uncommon words used. They're not hard words but uncommon enough that I forget what they mean. What kind of fan-translations are you playing? At least from what I've played, most have glaring mistakes. This game read 10x better than most fan-translations I've read. The only problems being the translation choice that's currently driving you insane, some wording choices I felt were wrong, and the few translation errors I caught. The norm for fan-translations is stuff done by Ixrec or TakuJun which read stilted as ever-living hell. If you think this is a horrible translation I'm not sure you could read through something like Fate/Stay Night and actually survive.

Not really. The average fan-translation is garbage, and I'd say this was a lot better. Far from perfect, but you should probably stop getting so incredibly anal over a single word. It's not a single word. Even then, the overuse of a single word can greatly ruin the experience. It did in my case for Umi's route. I'd much rather take that than having to reword sentences constantly in my head while reading something or having to deal with transliterating dots (god this annoys me so damn much now). I've had problems with the way certain words or phrases were translated in official translations, even phrases that were reoccurring. Though maybe I just didn't care that much about the tricky use of tricky because I lost interest in this game after like an hour in the first route. Oh well.

MangaGamer hires from the same pool of translators that Sekai Project does. Sekai Project also doesn't force anyone to pay for anything they don't want to. People know exactly what they're getting up front with these kinds of translation kickstarters. Mangamer mostly sticks with the people they have on board, while it seems Sekai Project goes for quantity. Though it's worth noting that a lot of the top notch translators in the scene are with Mangagamer and JAST, which is why their translations come out noticeably better than almost anything translated by SP. Also regarding Kickstarters, it's pretty silly to use the argument that they know what they're getting into. Since Kickstarter is basically a really in-advanced pre-order system, a lot of details aren't specific, or set on stone, or people simply never think about them. For example, people didn't even know Clannad was supposedly going to have a DRM system until just a few months back. Some people were even thinking about dropping their pledges solely because of that, meaning they never really thought about that back during the initial campaign. -

We've been over all of this shit plenty of times, and it's been discussed to hell and back on every other visual novel community as well. There's no need to go over all of this again and again. Explain Can we not purposefully try and start these discussions? Whenever anything related to Sekai goes up, the same couple of people always go, "Fuck Sekai" which is rather silly as Sekai Project, despite some faults, is doing good work bringing stuff over officially. Some people have legitimate complaints as to how they do things. There's nothing wrong with that, nor should everyone ignore any faults simply because they localize visual novels. -
