It just means a visual novel that originally came out in English, done by English-speaking writers. Most VNs are originally Japanese and in that language.

50 translated VNs you should read before you die
Okarin replied to Kaguya's topic in Recommendations
Sorry, but I really think that to make a "top X", you have to have had read 30 or 40 VNs at least, and some long ones. And it takes years. Then taste is also factored in, of course. But memorable VNs tend to stay memorable. The outdated art is a poor argument, I feel, because trying old games (that probably were hits on their day) will give you a wider perspective of the history and evolution of VNs. -
Petition to unbann Yandere Simulator from Twitch
Okarin replied to mitchhamilton's topic in Gaming Talk
In truth, for outsiders of the otaku culture, alien to the term "yandere" and its implications, it must look very... shocking. That's not to say that it's justified to remove this content. I played Mortal Kombat back in 1993 with some 10 years of age and while there was some fuss, it was quickly discarded. Nor did I became a violent person, I'm not a saint but don't go around doing assaults. Just teach self-control to people. There's the potential that it gets to someone deranged and the shit hits the fan? Like with RPG and violent content? Of course, but then we'd have to live in a Flanderised society with no portrayal of violence whatsoever and nobody wants that. Just check on the potentially violent and sociopathic people and we'll be fine. We the people who can manage and rationalise violent content don't deserve to be censored because of them. -

One or two from time to time aren't bad, there are even some hidden gems, but they distract you from reading the real deal, and that's bad.

In practise, OELVN is a really manageable term, easy to understand. Why shouldn't Mike Einel works not be OELVN? At least I read "deIz" in English, and found it sitting at Renai.us.

How would you introduce animes to your parents ?

Don't worry, nobody needs to know you're an otaku or what on Earth you like to do in your *free time* -
How would you introduce animes to your parents ?
Okarin replied to Pinkaw's topic in Anime/Manga Talk
Are you aware that you have completely hijacked the topic? I'd like some proof that we can (or should) vaporize the genders. Even male cats are different from female cats, I can tell. They also have different biological functions in their societies, even if they are roughly capable of the same. -

Okarin replied to Pinkaw's topic in Anime/Manga Talk
I'm just not convinced that "gender is a social construct" is true. I would like to hear actual proof of it. But if you think so, then alright. I was assuming that the OP's parents are people of enough age to have known very different times when men and women led separate and very different lives. It's just History, not whim. -

Okarin replied to Pinkaw's topic in Anime/Manga Talk
Oh, don't begin that topic. We're talking about Japanese works, precisely anime, yes? Well, they have tropes for women and tropes for men there, even whole demographics like shoujo and shounen, jousei and seinen. Of course the tropes can be enjoyed both ways. But if you don't like that men and women are different, just step in the soonest spaceship to Mars or outer space. Madoka Magica, they could potentially like it. It's a dark, dark story wrapped up in flashy colours. And they deceive. -

They're mostly ass-old shows from the golden age of animu... well, I think that blockbusters happen every handful of years, so you just have to wait for more. Those are true-and-tested though. -

Ah, OK. So they're interested (or would be) in anime and you want some recommendations? The seinen genre is good for adults. Women could enjoy most shoujo. If your dad is into police thrillers or dystopias, show him Psycho Pass (2 seasons). If he likes Wagnerian material or Dungeons and Dragons, then Record of Lodoss War. Durarara could also be competent. I think that Monster had an anime and it is a very adult story. Anything originally by Naoki Urasawa works. For your mom I have little material, sorry. Maybe Kimi ga Nozomu Eien? (drama) Or Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora? (OAV, more drama) Key things such as Little Busters, Kanon or Clannad? I always believed most women love drama, but not every time. Sadly I'm very low on trendy shoujo at the moment. Overall I'd go to the classics: Evangelion, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, City Hunter... the blockbusters of the 90s. -
This is good, since I had zero friends on the 3DS, and given how social Nintendo wants their platforms to be... Friend Code: 1521-4843-9023 Nintendo ID: Thorpedian

On paper, and I mean on paper, it doesn't seem a bad thing... the article itself talks in a somewhat good light about the changes -minus the 5K fee. It's bad for VN indie devs because from some years till now Steam has become a VN mecca. But then again, all you have to do is find a virtual platform that will publish your game with your conditions. Steam is growing, but other platforms such as Humble Bundle, GOG and more are growing too and incorporating more games into their catalogues. Steam has a wide advantage, but other platforms will also grow in the future.

How would you introduce animes to your parents ?
Okarin replied to Pinkaw's topic in Anime/Manga Talk
Why would I? Why would you? Why would anyone? I mean, you don't have to ask for permission to watch or enjoy a given thing, not even to your parents. Especially if you're over your country's adulthood age. Plus, there are some things that are personal, i. e. privy to the general public. -
Still no good. If I wanted strange heroines, I'd stick with Dragonlance's Silvara.

This seems a case of a clichéd OELVN. A catgirl appears for some random reason, she romances you, etc...

Visual novels with a mostly adult-looking cast
Okarin replied to Funyarinpa's topic in Visual Novel Talk
Dragon Head is a special case of a deep, dark story where teenagers seem out of place -more adult characters could provide a better insight on what the heck is happening. Of course, it isn't good that, not only the author himself didn't know where to direct his story, but the status of Japan and the world was slowly revealed, at a crawl. The story is comparable with the also teenager-starred Never 7, but Dragon Head was even more ambitious -and failed more spectacularly. -
Re-reading Chronicles of the Dragonlance, all 3 ebooks costed me 18 euros. I regret nothinggggggg! Waiting in line, there's some Guy Gavriel Kay, and 50 Shades of Grey, even though I arrive at least 2 years late, I've gotta know why everyone talks about that shit (it's a good thing that it is very hard to inspire nausea in me).

Noooooooooooooooooooooo we've lost you there.

Visual novels with a mostly adult-looking cast
Okarin replied to Funyarinpa's topic in Visual Novel Talk
It's starred by adolescents because it's aimed at adolescents, I believe there are people who pass through high school without paying much attention to manga and fashion, but the majority does. Anyway at least in manga and anime, there's a seinen demographic with works like, say, Horrible Story Monster, etc. They are starred by adults. There are also allegedly adult stories told through teenagers, like that Dragon Head mess. A work with great potential vastly misused. -
Anyteam who is translating Little Buster Kud wafuu?
Okarin replied to Yui's topic in Fan Translation Discussion
The game is called Kud Wafter and provided the main game made its way to Steam, we could still get an official release like with Clannad's extra chapters. -
is the series hatsune miku series just for girls & women
Okarin replied to Cloud87's topic in Gaming Talk
Hatsune Miku is a universal goddess. Everyone can worship... I mean... like her and her games. Also why should it be targeted to women and not men? Are you talking about rhythm games with her songs? I played Bust a Groove back in the day. Women and men alike enjoyed it. But Miku is more... you know... cutesy. It would appeal more to boys. -
VNs with gameplay are a thing. By the same token Zero Escape wouldn't be VNs, that notwithstanding the fact that the game calls half of itself "novel" sections. Calling these adventure games is usually done by people who don't know about the existence of the VN genre.
